The setting for the remarkable Life which is the subject of this book is Pharasa, in Cappadocia in Asia Minor. Now in Turkey, Asia Minor was part of the Greek Commonwelth from about 2000 B.C., as were areas along the Black Sea coast, the Crimea, Georgia and Armenia.
Settled by Greeks, it was later home to Early Christians as Saint Paul' s epistles to the Ephesians and the Galatians bear witness, and then to the great Fathers of the Orthodox Church, among them Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. Many of the most paoular Saints are associated with Asia Minor, including Saints George, Nicholas and Charalambos, and in Byzantium it provided much of the enormous wealth of the State, both in material terms and also spiritually, through the ascetic labours of the monks for which the region was renowned. These areas were gradually lost to Byzantium and finally the unthinkable occurred, the Queen od Cities itself fell to the Turks in 1453, AND THE Emperor, Constantinos XI Palaiologos, was slain at its gates in the last defence.
Elder Paisios of Mount Athos (Greek: Γέροντας Παΐσιος ο Αγιορείτης), born Arsenios Eznepidis, was a well-known Eastern Orthodox monk from Farasa, Cappadocia. He is famous for his spiritual teachings. Many people worldwide, especially in Greece and in Russia, highly venerated Elder Paisios, even before his formal canonization as a saint, which took place on January 13th 2015.
This is a beautiful story in a fascinating otherwordly setting of a Greek village in 19th Centur Turkey. Just google a picture of Pharasa and you'll see what I mean. Some of the accounts of healing can be very similar to each other but many stoires have intriguing twists like the robbers that couldn't find their way out of St. Arsenios' cell, or the woman who had to water a rock.
A great book of Christianity written by Saint Paisios about his godgathert Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian! I feel so moved and touched by this book! Great blessing!
Beautifully written book by St. Paisios. The details of St. Arsenios’s life is captured in the book and filled with important events and examples of the several miracles he performed. A must read for any Orthodox and a great reminder of the importance of keeping our Faith alive despite difficulties.
Absolutely beautiful account of the life and miracles of Saint Arsenios. Saint Paisios provides a well rounded and clear picture of this holy figure, while still leaving appropriate room to contemplate his mysterious and miraculous nature. We also get a good picture of the village of Pharasa, where both Saints originated.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Anything written by Elder Paisios will provide clear spiritual enlightenment. Learning about Saint Arsenios life through Elder Paisios’s eyes was a gift.
