Assassination attempt on Sei.

My favourite arc so far! An assassination attempt on Sei, with Shin and Kyoukai now on opposite(?) sides after working together in the Wei war arc. My favourite moment of the series so far is Shin seeing the assassins approach and immediately moving to protect Sei, Ten, and the palace girl. In nearly every single moment of his life up to this point Shin has blazed past enemy lines, recklessly thrown himself into battle, and gone on the offensive to prove himself. For what feels like the first time his initial instinct is to hold position and defend others! Sure he's protected people before but that moment where he spots the assassins and stands his ground is great.

Kyoukai's backstory, which I can't mention due to spoilers, is infuriating (in a good way) and sets up what I expect to be a great arc/motivation for them going forward- not just this quiet but skilled child who came out of nowhere but someone with a goal and purpose that drives them. Because this series definitely needed a Sasuke-type yup mhm

This one didn't grab me quite as well as the others. We're off the battlefields and that plays a part, sure, but the assassin fight didn't feel terribly convincing as it was clear from the start that neither character was trying to kill the other. They could've been more honest about playing it up and it'd have worked better.

Also, that's the second time the story pulls a "big reveal" of a boy turning out to be a girl. Both times it pulls great emotional stakes out of nowhere and tries to pretend it's a big deal, when in reality, it has absolutely no true story significance attached to it. Sure, there was probably more than a degree of sexism going on in the historical China - but in the story it just hasn't come up before. So it felt rather like a cheat the first time it happened, and downright tiresome now the second time around.

Hoping for things to pick up again. Looks like more politics.

Je ne sais pas si j'aurai un jour un autre mot qu'incroyable à la bouche après avoir lu un tome Kingdom. On ne se lasse pas des combats, les adversaires sont tous redoutables et pourtant l'auteur réussi à se renouveler à chaque fois, sachant qu'il y a une cinquantaine de tomes à ce jour j'ai de plus en plus hâte de lire la suite.
