Dario When I was younger, I believe I heard something I shouldn’t have. After what I overheard, I don’t believe our mother just up and left us. I was a kid. I didn’t have money, power, or respect to get the answers I needed back then. Not until now. I’m being promoted in the family and I’ll have all the power I need.
However, there’s one problem, I’m in love with my best friend and business partner. Carleen is everything I would want in a wife. If only being a Di Lorenzo didn’t threaten her life.
Carleen I’ve been in love with Dario Di Lorenzo since I was eight years old. My father believes that’s the reason I walked away from being a surgeon to become a chef. One drunken night and Dario learns my secret. A secret that leads to a bigger secret that threatens my life as I know it—everything is about to change.
I’d give my all for Dario. Even if that means becoming what he doesn’t know he needs.
Will all these secrets tear everything apart? Will the Di Lorenzo world turn everything on its head? Or will one single wish fall in with the plan?

Some Romance books are like scary movies in which you have to suspend all logic to enjoy it which is fine but sometimes the plot holes are so ridiculous it takes you out the story. Carleen & Dario were NOT best friends. They never ever confided in each other about anything. They didn't trust each other with any info. These are 2 people thrown together by forces bigger than them. Its why there's no emotional stakes to their relationship. In fact neither of them confided in anyone. Dario never talked to his twin, carleen didn't feel comfortable with her own cousin. Toni found out about the pregnancy on her own speaking of which I know hidden pregnancies have romance writers in a choke hold but why would carleen think this would work when she goes to work every day at a public place that the baby's father co-owns where his family & friends work & frequent? Authors make a point of telling us how intelligent these women are by giving them ivy league education and/or highbrow careers & then proceeds to have them willfully dumb the rest of the story. Essentially Carleen is a moron but she has to be for any of this to work. We got two families that are supposed to be close-knit separately but they treat each other like cooperate espionage so there's no familial bonding that feels like family. There's no stakes here because there's no love expressed. In effort to create intrigue all the relationships suffer.
The way the book was written just didn’t work for me. Too many riddles making it hard to see the bigger picture. I can understand Ava hiding, however Dario’s behavior didn’t make sense. Dario was presented as a curious person, however there was no signs of that. All he seemed interested in was his restaurant and Carleen. He barely ask questions, did no research etc.. His attitude was frustrating as it felt more like the one of a teenager in love instead of a capo. He also talked about her his brothers were important to him but he was never with them, he never enquired about Gigi’s doll or even spend much time with his twin or niece. As for Carleen, she was just boring to me. The whole not asking questions to Dario nor her family was silly. Complete head in the sand attitude. It also made no sense that she would lose her memory but as a doctor not try to see a specialist to regain it. She’s supposed to be super smart but she never pieced anything together. Also if Dario is not going to be Don, what does it matter that Carleen is a killer? I hope the next book will be written in a more transparent and direct style.
The writing was wonderful and the storyline was interesting and exciting but the love failed. The love between Dario and Carleen lacked trust and openness. The love between brothers left a lot to be desired because there were so many secrets, lies, and manipulations. Gio played people like chess pieces and the people around him enabled his behavior. Throughout the whole book the brothers were willfully ignorant about everything, never really asking questions or digging for the truth. Carleen was the dumbest intelligent person ever written. The MCs’ lack of desire to discover the truth was frustrating. However, I think that in order for this plot to work, they had to be obtuse and preposterously simpleminded. As a convoluted story about the relationships and inner workings of a mafia, it gets 4 stars. As a romance novel, it gets 3 stars. Overall, 3.5 stars.
I love this series: the mystery, suspense, and thrill. Omg, the unraveling of secrets is at the edge of my seat. This book lack for naught. It's a workplace romance meets mafia romance with childhood best friend to lovers. Oh, so yummy. I can't wait for book. I need Gio's story.
This book is everything that I have come to expect from a Blue Saffire book, and once again she has given her readers a true masterpiece!!! I can't wait for Gio's story!!!
I have this feeling onceI have the opportunity to read this a second time my rating will increase. I just have a needed understand everything a bit better.
I enjoyed this storyline and the main characters, the can't wait to find out what happens next. I love the covers for both books. Dente was my favorite. Too looks like he will be the man. Would recommend.
It was ok. I thought Dante' book was a tad better as there was less of the Gio story-line and more of Dante and Lizzy. I believed this move by the author shortchanged Dario's story. The book became confusing at times and the author was all over the place. A few mis-spelt words but not enough to turn me off. After finishing this book I hoped for a rewrite. I have given this book a strong 3.5 stars only because Blue has never disappointed as a writer.
This was really convoluted read....imo...there were passages that I had to reread to understand who was involved in the particular part of the story. Carleen was an OK character, she kinda went along with Dario's program and found it hard to believe she was a trained killer. Dario didn't fare much better as he was described as a curious person. He would ask questions but was told " it not time for you to know yet" he seemed to be okay with it and didn't ask or press or even try to satisfy his curiosity on his own. Not quite sure if I'm ready for the mental gymnastics of Gio's story.
Liked it better than the first book in the series. I love Blues work but this series hasn’t pulled me in like her previous work. Between these 2 books there’s a lot of characters and moving parts to remember to fully grasp the twists and turns. You should read the series in order for the best understanding. I just wasn’t that stunned, surprised or interested at the end as the story came together.
MY BEST FRIEND’S WISH is the first book I’ve read by this author. I also read the series out of order as UNEXPECTED LOVERS is the first book but it didn’t detract to have read the two books in reverse.
Dario and Carleen are life long best friends. As early as they can recall, there’s been a bond between them that has been unshakeable. They’re also in love with each other and have been for a long while but Dario believes that his family situation makes being with her impossible. Carleen thinks that Dario isn’t attracted to Black women so while she loves him, she believes that him being attracted to her will never happen. Both have misconceptions about the others feelings which has them as close as lovers while not being lovers. That changes one night when Dario stumbles upon a secret and with that revelation, best friends become much more to each other.
MY BEST FRIEND’S WISH is entertaining on levels. The protagonists have strong chemistry. The world building is good, which incorporates the prior novel and sets up the next story in this universe. There’s outside forces that create drama for the couple that heightens the suspense of the story.
The only thing worse than walking into a book and learning one of the protagonists is black, is seeing the author capitalize black as a skin color. As if it does anything for black people to capitalize them, other than be utterly racist and black surpremacist. I think this book is 2022, but I doubt in 3 years the author has learned their lesson. Automatic DNF.
Black people in literature wouldnt be a big deal if white characters didnt become black, and its called "inclusion and diversity" but black characters becoming white would be a scandal. If black characters (majority originally white) didnt overpopulate fiction now, because black people are still a minority, so why are they in absolutely everything as if they have that much population? And how does a black person in every show and tv ad actually help the black population? Solve the problems in black communities? How does black surpremacy like capitalizing black as a skin color help black people? Its just token supremacy. Its also segregating, meaning its not only racist toward non-blacks, it's racist toward blacks. And ALL of it is absolutely empty, because at the end of the day, the problems in the black community have not been solved or improved. And idiots like this author will pat themselves on the back for "fighting the power" and "raising up black people" and whatever else they can say that 1) promotes racism 2) promotes black supremacy 3)doesnt actually help the individuals they want a medal and attention for "helping". Its actually just BS that heightens racism bc for every individual falsely "supporting" black people will be another person tired of the BS and growing more resentful.
And in case it needs to be said, even though this isnt about the book but rather the dumbassery of capitalizing a skin color, bc again I DNFd and authors and all SJW need to make better life choices, black people are not victims. No one today knows slavery based on their skin color. No one today who is young even experienced the racism of MLKjr's day. Rosa Parks was a staged recreation. White people owe black people nothing, especially since America is the land of immigrants, and so not only were many family lines not even here for slavery, but slave owners, especially of substantial amounts, were rare because you had to be rich. The common average joe was not rich. The common white person, even in the age of slavery, was also working to the bone in poor conditions. Many people in America have ancestors who were slaves, because slavery does not see skin color and America is not the only place it existed. If you are Slavic, your ancestors were slaves. Not one single person alive today had anything to do with slavery in the 1800s. No one is responsible for the sins of the father, especially with "greats" added in. Civil War was over States Rights not slavery--until the North decided they could cripple the Southern States whose economy relied on it. Slavery was not abolished because hearts changed. It was a war tactic. The North does not get a gold star for abolishing slavery, they did not do it humanitarily. Black people owned slaves. Black people sold their own people into slavery. Black people still have the highest rate of killing other black people--which no amount of capitalizing their skin color or demanding repirations or sticking blacks in every tv ad and movie and book will fix. The stories of black communities getting new expensive equipment and wrecking it within a couple years were not made up. And they are plentiful. Not only do black communities do the most looting during natural disasters, but white people in the last few years have done the most damage rioting and "as demonstrations" of supporting black people. Furthermore, BS like BLM is funded by rich white guys to keep the masses in chaos and hate, while the black people in charge pocket all the money. None of it actually goes to support black people or make their lives and communities better. .
None of this is about the book, but if you are gonna pull bullshit false support and promote racism and supremacy, you reap what you sow. The skin color of the author doesnt even matter, bc all of this remains true.
And as a final zinger just remember, if you wanted black people to stop being victims, truly, there wouldnt be a push to keep them in victim mentality. They need to stay victims, so people can keep pretending they support them. Black people arent victims because people are horrendous, theyre victims because they need to stay that way to make SJW possible. If people TRULY wanted black people to not be victims, they wouldnt be by how. But then no one would have anything to fight and rage against or campaign for. Has anyone on earth TRULY benefitted from victim mentality? NO. Healing and bootstraps come from rising above and leaving that behind. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Stop limiting yourself by staying in the victim headspace. You have to leave that behind to rise above. Its basic therapy. You have to let the attachment or emotion go to move on. So every single person participating in these BS ways of "empowering black people" are actually complicit in perpetuating the black victim myth. Or, rather, black people ARE victims, but its victims of being pawns in this game of calling them victims and making the whole world revolve around it. To TRULY want better for a black person is to encourage people to STOP labeling them victims. God forbid they were treated the same as white people or asians or whatever else. God forbid they couldnt play the race card. God forbid we vocally accepted no one alive today owes anyone alive today anything for the 1800s. TLDR; if you label someone a victim, they will always be a victim. They will always carry that mentality. They will never rise above. So if you are engaging in any act--from supporting them in every ad or encouraging blacking out white characters and calling it "diversity" or capitalizing their skin color, or saying "not now their turn can come later" when anyone brings up any other minority deserving justice---or any other form this takes, you are complicit in wanting black people to stay victims. You dont want better for them. They NEED to stay victims for you. Or they need to stay victims for themselves, because it validates their bad behavior or special treatment.
This was interesting... the framework for a great romance/romantic thriller was there and then it just went off the rails. The author is hellbent on confusing the reader and dumbing down her characters. So much intrigue, mystery, flashbacks, amnesia, time jumps - none of it was seamless and most of it was distracting. The hero and heroine's romance was fun as it initially unfolded, until the setting switched to Italy.
Now let's discuss the elephants in the room: 1) these two are bffs for decades yet it was never revealed that one is in the mafia? And Car doesn't feel betrayed that her best friend never told her? 2) Towards the end of the book, Car never wonders WHY she has these random military/fighting skills drilled into her subconscious from being a child? Or why she'd need them? 3) the characters kept saying 'what am I missing' but never put any effort into solving these major mysteries in their lives? 4) Gio is manipulating everyone's life, needlessly putting people's lives at risk and everyone just accepts it?
To be honest, Carlene was boring and naive to the point of dumbness. And my biggest pet peeve is turning a strong, independent heroine into a pregnant airhead. And Dario, he's actually part of the mafia and yet doesn't ask questions? He allows Gio to lead him around clueless. No one is intelligent in this book except for Gio. I suspend a lot of belief when reading romances but this was evident of lackluster writing and characters that were not fully fleshed out. The author's books are becoming predictable with alpha men and heroines without a backbone or independence. And like previous series, there's the inclusion of ridiculously complicated, convoluted storylines for the sake of expanding out the 'universe'. There was a ton of potential and I actually enjoyed about the first 30% of the book that was actually romance.
Book 2 of the Work Husband Series and its by far my favorite (Until Gio's story because that one is going to be intense). Dario and Carleen were hot and heavy from start to finish. Best friends since the playground days until present day. They were a yin and yang that completed each other in ways no one else could. Both harbored feelings for the other but fear prevented them from revealing it to each other. When Dario stumbles upon Carleen's journal he gets the shock of his life, and takes the plunge to make her his woman. The spice between them is hot, and the love between them is very much true. Dario had a lot of expectations of him and insecurities on if he could fulfill them. A successful Chef, Entrepreneur, and butcher to the mafia family he was a jack of trades by far. He loved his family and was loyal to those around him, but the lack of answers about people and moments of his life put him in a stand still of sorts. The only thing he knew was meant to be and a necessity in his life was Carleen. Carleen was lovable but lost all at the same time. Unaware of the life led by Dario she believed her best friend to be a man who was firm enough to get things done and just an Alpha natured individual. She herself is beautiful, intelligent, talented, and loyal to a fault. The relationship she begins with Dario begins to be more than just a night of passion and questions arise about who he really is and if she just follows while he leads. Together they must overcome secrets, deception, insecurities, and threats to the world around them. How much is the love they have worth and will it survive?
The first book threw me off but this book got me straight, I now know that Carleen was ok she didn't get taken but now I got more questions about who is pulling the strings to kill the family but most of all why did their mom not show up an let all her sons know she was ok, an is Jace their real brother or is he just the boy that his mom adopted that was their mom's lover child. If the grandad isn't the Don than who is the Don.? My other question is what is going on between Gio,Ry, and Jace. That is a crazy story because everyone think Gio is gay but then he got dolls, that everyone claims that they are the most beautiful women they seen. So what is up with that an why everyone think that he is sleeping with all those women an a guy. But when their moms dad tell the story he is like No that's not true. I want the real story an why is he making power moves and who kill Dante wife and why was Dante mother-in-law was in the freezer and who stole the money from Dante company, I know who taken it his dead wife but she said that she taken if for her lover but the dad said something different. So who they gave the money to that was stolen from Dante?. I got questions but I hope book 3 gives the answers. I would read this book again because of the twists and turns that get you hook so quick that you go ok sex part but you want the answer to who is doing what? How did Lucus raise his sons but be call uncle without anyone knowing he was the boys dad. That blew me away . I look forward to book 3. To all happy reading.😋
Whoa there is a lot to unpack in this book😱. The story does take place in parallel to Dante’s book so be sure to read the first book or else you’ll be lost and with the additional information laid out in this book your head will spin😵💫.
Dario and Carleen are childhood friends who’ve been in love with each other but neither confessed it until one night Dario learned of their mutual desires and acted🥵🔥😈. There was no turning back after that as their everyday life became a whirlwind of hope and complication. There are secrets and surprises revealed that tie both of their families together, revelations that provide answers but also raises more questions🤔. I was glad that Carleen finally owned up and accepted her truth. I felt that Dario resigning to his position did the best he could with the information he had and except that he should have been more adamant about being informed😖. Throughout the book there are glimpses of Gio and Jace’s life that stirs up the imagination. The age of Carleen was a big issue for me in that it was too young for her to have learned all that and it coming back almost effortlessly as an adult😏.
I love this series and how the story is unfolding❤️. There were some instances where it was hard to tell who was speaking and had to double back but aside from that with all the information that’s laid out you definitely want to pay close attention. I can’t wait for Gio’s book I have a feeling its gonna be a wild one🙌🏽.
Okay so since it ended like that and my mind is rolling, lets just jump right in.
I more then enjoyed reading this book. I was beyond excited when I saw the 2nd book of this series was out. I drop everything and stop reading the book I was reading just to jump in on this.
There so many questions and I cannot wait for the next one to see if they get answer.
And can I just say the amount of surprise and info you find out in this book leaves you wide eye. I cannot even tell you how many times I kept saying "oh shit". Lol far too many times from my guess.
And Gio. Man, this sexy man takes after his mother to the T. He really is the chess board master. But I don't know if I like this or not, I'm still holding out on final opinion. I can almost say that I understand Dario feeling of frustration, as well as being left in the dark.
Because it is the most frustration thing ever!
Carleen and Dario relationship is so heart warming. I love the little scenes when they're kids and how infatuated they are about one another.
I more then enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one. Hopefully it won't be a long wait.
The writing was great but the story itself wasn’t.
Carleen was accused of losing herself in Dario and the author proves it. We never get to see her flourish outside of him and once their love life stars, she immediately falls pregnant. Her world has been him since childhood and that kind of relationship isn't for me.
Dario, himself is very strange. His brother knows him to be the curious one, always asking questions and yet he doesn't find Carleen's change in behavior strange?? It's hard to believe.
Nothing made sense even in the ending. Gio's plan unfolds so quickly with so many moving parts, it was hard to keep track of everyone's motives.
It's always a risk to keep the reader confused along with the main character (Dario genuinely knew nothing of his brother's plan) but sadly, this was an unsuccessful attempt. The ending is too rushed for you to have kept us in suspense all along. It should have been better flushed out.
Having Dante's child kidnaped and found was so random and unneeded.
This book was really good I really love it and. I loved how this book started like. Not everybody can make a book with a beginning. The way I literally love Carleen so much like she’s such a good character like. She’s one of my favorite character’s now. I love the way Dario is written like you can tell that he loves Carleen and would do anything for her. It’s like Carleen and Dario was meant for each other. Also the only thing I didn’t like was that Dario came inside of Carleen. When they were having sex with each other for. The first time and didn’t say anything about it and acted clueless. I love me a good friends to lovers and. I think this book did a good job at it. Also Dario have so much family drama like there always something going on with his family. Anyway I can’t wait for Gio book I think it’s going to be mad good
Almost put the book down a few times but pushed through. From beginning to end, this book felt like it was written in riddles. Soooo many named characters and all their points of view were “there are secrets but I’m not gonna say what they are to the reader to keep them intrigued.” The sad part was this book didn’t give intrigue. It gave confusion and try-hard. I started skipping pages and by the time I got to the end, I didn’t even care about any of it. So much was packed into this and none of it satisfying. I didn’t care who was a doll, doll master, doll curator or any of it. This book was so muddled that the soulmate aspect and their love plot also ended up unsatisfying especially as every other sentence from them was “there’s something I don’t know, I can feel it”🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄. Tirrrrred. Spice was meh as well.
Rarely give 5 stars...even when its my fav author. I read a lot, so there are few books that hit all of my bells & whistles. But this was poppin!!!! Wasn't at all expecting a full on mafia series with the name of series, but it was still great. Loved Dario and Carleen's story. Esp loved Carleen coming into her own and finding her own path...with the love and support of her boo thang, best friend. I also loved how you tied a lot of strings for us and didnt leave us with the worst kind of cliff hanger with very few anwsers. I wasn't initially excited about this story, because Gio was much more interesting to me. But glad I gave it a chance from one of my favorite authors.
In this best friends-to-lovers story in the 𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑘 𝐻𝑢𝑠𝑏𝑎𝑛𝑑 series, Dario Di Lorenzo and Carleen Mitchell have been best friends since childhood. Both are very in love with the other; however, neither has made a move. One night all it takes is mistaking a private journal for a recipe book. It’s time to wake the sleeping assassin. There is more to Carleen than meets the eye.
With more layers leading up to the final books of this series, the author has written a solid storyline and developed a great series. If you like this author's world-building, you will love this story. All is not as it seems, and I cannot wait for the rest of the story to connect the rest of the dots and find the breadcrumbs.
She lifts her gun and blows a hole through Jacob’s head first. Then she turns her gun on Louis and blows his brains out next. The sob that comes from Frances is so satisfying. After all, he was going to allow his father to do the same to me and mine. My mother puts her gun away with a smile on her lips. I give her a nod, before I turn my eyes on Ny. I see the tears that shine in her eyes. It’s almost over, baby. “Hi, Frances. Good to see you,” Ma says. “Tell your father if he still has a problem, he can see Don Gio. My son, my successor.” She goes to turn to leave, but pauses and turns back, pulling her gun again. “On second thought, Gio, have Blake send that message,” she says, then puts a bullet in Frances’s head.
This book is intricately woven, vividly intense and has an interesting storyline. I love how Blue Saffire interconnects, weaves and loops her series, as in this one. This enhances how you connect with the characters and their connection to the storyline. The plot and subplot are well developed. The excitement and unexpected turn of events keep you in anticipation. Surprises, secrets....Yes....Aha moments, all of this await you in this story. Dario and Carleen are destined to be together. Each for their own reasons are holding back their true feelings. Best friends since childhood...but one fateful night everything changes...and there is no turning back. Will revelations revealed and secrets that come to light, change everything or set other plans in motion? Get your copy, settle in and immerse yourself in the world of Dario, Carleen and the Di Lorenzo Family.
After reading the first book in the series and then reading the reviews for book 2 I got skeptical on what to expect. However, I am soooo happy I decided to follow my instincts and give the book a try - best decision!
I was shocked by the revelations that kept unfolding, and now I’m even more excited to read Gios book. Car and Rio have an amazing chemistry and I love how everything just keeps falling into place throughout the series.
I will say though there is a lot of information to take in at once, with all the twists and turns but other than that this was a great read and I highly recommended!
