Profit, the old man who had helped Immanuel rescue Little Bear from the Utes, is taking him back to his mother, Standing Bear, at the settlement. On their second night out, Little Bear goes missing. Profit travels back to the boys, and they journey to where Profit suspects the boy was taken by the Utes.

It seems that Little Bear will be staying with the Utes and not returning to his mother. But something unexpected happens, and all is changed!
