Maniac of New York Vol. 2 The Bronx is Burning collects issues 1-4 of the Aftershock Comics series written by Elliott Kalan and art by Andrea Mutti.

The story continues with Maniac still at large in the Bronx.

The story continues to be a great blend of horror as well as critique on modern society. It may be satire, but there are definitely parts of the book where I am like “that probably isn’t far from the truth of what would happen.” I hope we continue to get more of this story!

3.75 stars. So the Maniac of New York is still on the loose and Greene and Pettibone are still after him. But now he has left the city and went to the Bronx to terrorize a school and later on to the stadium. Greene has a case of flammable liquor and is hell bent on stopping him this time. This could have got a higher score but there was some things teased in the last volume about the possible origin of this Maniac that was abandoned here. Either they forgot about that, ran out of time to get to it or, this ain’t over and a volume three is coming. Hoping for the latter. Another October read done. On to the next one.

This series has such oddly slow pacing. Worse: we're into full on wheelspinning territory now. The lifeblood of slasher movies is new information - do we get to learn something new about the killer and his/her/its origin. The answer is: no. We know nothing more than we knew at the end of volume 1.

And yes, there is one big 'change' at the end of this volume, but we all know that'll turn out to be meaningless..

Harry has moved his hunting grounds but his methods haven’t changed. Detectives Pettibone and Greene believe they have discovered his weakness. The Mayor isn’t concerned about the body count, only his approval ratings.

If you enjoyed the first volume this hits all the points. I plan to read more about these characters in later volumes.

Maniac Harry terrorizes a middle school then swings by opening day at Yankees Stadium.

Kalan delivers a slasher sequel that ticks all the boxes: more rampage, more bodies, more futile heroism on the part of ordinary doomed citizens. More editorial condemnation of institutions of power. And one more chance for the detested hero-cops from v1 to put an end to Maniac Harry's cycle of violence.

Kalan's contempt for those in power is on full display: the Democrat mayor's office reels off inconsistent and politically expedient orders that do nothing but interfere with the protagonists; the NYPD does nothing but shoot innocents and cover its own ass; and Fox News lies torrentially to twist the slaughter to its own ends, 'flooding the zone with shit' as Steve Bannon would say.

And there's a wonderfully cynical set of documents in the epilogue, official instructions from the State Department of Education's violence contractor for what to do in the event of a 'Maniac incident'. And it's all about which gormless euphemisms to use with the children, what unmonitored helpline to call before police in case of an attack, and how best to get parents to sign insurance waivers.

Kalan is pissed off and I'm there for it.

I don't think I'm speaking out of turn if I suggest that one of Elliott Kalan's goals for this comic is to take a better pass at the concept that was botched by "Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan." That concept is what it might look like if you took a slasher movie, typically a genre set in isolated locales on dark nights, and transplants it to the city that never sleeps. (I don't claim this is high literature, but it's an idea that might interest fans of the genre). This volume sees the unstoppable Maniac Harry visit death on a private, for-profit charter school in the Bronx before heading to Yankee Stadium on opening day. Kudos to Kalan for using the medium to create scenarios that would never fly on the big screen.

Unfortunately, we don't get much from this volume beside those big set pieces. The satirical value of using a masked murder as a stand-in for more familiar American forms of mass violence is pretty light and doesn't build much on what was already done in Volume 1. There are a few jabs at charter schools and civic government, but nothing hugely illuminating. Most disappointingly, some of the intriguing hints presented in Volume 1 receive no further development here.

It's not bad, but it feels incomplete. I hope they finish strong with Volume 3.

My thanks to both NetGalley and the publishers Aftershock Comics and Diamond Book Distributors for an advanced copy of this horror graphic novel that takes a bite out of the Big Apple.

Horror stories are a reflection on the times that they were created in. Strange loners that come into your home, destroy property, your sense of peace and security, sometimes your life and just seem unstoppable and unceasing. Police can't help you. The politicians don't care. Scientists want to study the threat more they they want to stop it. When the machete comes through the door, the harpoon through the glass, the chainsaw into the porta- potty, you are on your own. Writer Elliott Kalan and artist Andrea Mutti in Maniac of New York, Volume 2: The Bronx is Burning continues the story of Maniac Harry and his never- ending murderous rampage in the city that does not sleep.

Detective Zelda Pettibone and mayoral aide Gina Greene, are on the outs with both the Mayor's office, the police commissioner and most other New Yorkers due to their actions against the unstoppable killing machine that is Maniac Harry in the subways during the previous volume. By chance they find themselves in the Bronx as the Maniac has decided that his latest abattoir will be a charter school, filled with cellphone distracted students, and cheap security due to its corporate owners. At the same time the New York Yankees are having their opening night, and the school is very close to a sold out stadium, just in case Harry feels the need to pick off some batters at home. Or fans in the stands.

A takeoff on the early days of 80's slasher movies, where a thing of evil with vague ties to something or someone slaughters everything on the screen for 85 minutes or so. The killer seems unstoppable, two final girl, one with a past, and a small child wiser than most with a secret are all present. And a lot of blood. The story is well slasher tale, but with a lot of sly dark humor and political jabs, which I liked. Elliott Kalen was previously a writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and other shows, and also wrote the Spider-Man/ X-Men crossover which I enjoyed quite a bit. Reading the previous volume will help, but it won't hinder enjoyment, everything is explained well so new readers won't be left out. The art is a combination of gritty realistic, yet fantastic, like early Giallo films, though there is a lot more red in this.

A story which hits close with the recent school shootings and a police force that seemed both ineffective and uncaring, sort of which is a big part of this story. Horror shows that the veneer of trust and belief that people hold for themselves and their society can be easily ripped away. By hatchet, axe and machete. A bloody tale of our American life. Recommended for horror fans, especially of the Friday the 13th kind of movies or Giallo fans in general.

The comic equivalent of the direct-to-DVD low budget sequel to the not very inventive first film. Cliche after cliche is ... I don't want to say trotted out, because that implies a sense of urgency ... plodded out to its inevitable death. The Final Girl seems to maybe get her revenge, and maybe redemption? But nobody else has an arc so much as At The Beginning Of The Story They Are At Point A and then, without much explanation At The End Of The Story They Are At Point B.

The slimy mayor character doesn't act with any purpose, nor does he seem to have much power. We still only have hints at who The Maniac was/is (but it's the precise same hints we had in volume one). And the worst part is that the author first sets the slashing at an underfunded school, and then at a Yankees game, and manages to squander both opportunities to say anything interesting about education and capitalism or sports fans. There is a vague "corporate schooling is bad" based on the principal's actions, but its otherwise toothless. And the Yankees game slashfest, where most of the bodycount happens, is incredibly dull, and not even visually interesting.

There will presumably be a third volume of this, as The Child Who Knows Something About The Killer hasn't been able to pass on her knowledge about a Very Stupid Weakness that the villain (who seems to be dead) has. But who cares?

MANIAC OF NEW YORK, VOL 2: THE BRONX IS BURNING by Elliott Kalan

I first encountered Elliott Kalan when his podcast, the Flophouse, did a bonus episode in conjunction with The Greatest Generation to review Star Trek V. I fell in love with him as a podcaster when I listened to I, Podius, the I, Claudius rewatch podcast he did with John Hodgman. After that I started listening to the Flophouse regularly, and I realized that he was the writer of Spider-Man and the X-men, which was hilarious. So when I heard him talking about Maniac of New York on the podcast, I decided to try it, even though horror is NOT my genre.

But I needn’t have worried - the writing is so good that I forgot to be scared. Kalan creates a very realistic view of how our world would react to a Jason Voorhees-like serial killer on the loose in Manhattan.

I was very happy when NetGalley and the publisher gave me an eARC of volume 2 in exchange for an honest review.

Volume 2 ratchets up the tension and the action in quite believable ways. I was hoping for more progress on the whole museum plot thread from book one, but that’s a minor quibble. The ending? I did NOT expect that. I can’t wait for volume 3.

October 2023. This weekend I had the pleasure of reading Maniac of New York series! I recommend these for sure. Volume 1: Death Train, and Volume 2: The Bronx is Burning.

Really enjoyed both, great visuals, likable characters, and solid commentary on the normalization of horrors like shootings as inevitable, without taking away from the slasher story at the center of it.

I borrowed these from Sacramento Public Library but would consider buying volume 3 to get my hands on it ASAP when it comes out in 2024. Great graphic novels to check out as we wrap up October.

“Maniac of New York Vol 1: The Death Train” and “Maniac of New York Vol 2: The Bronx is Burning” by Elliott Kalan, Art by Andrea Mutti.
My pupper MoMo unwittingly posed with the graphic novels.

Side note: check out the delightful comedy podcast about bad movies, The Flop House, if you haven't. Elliott is one of the hosts and it's been a fun treat to listen to for me for a decade now!

'Maniac of New York, Vol. 2: The Bronx Is Burning' by Elliott Kalan with art by Andrea Mutti is a graphic novel about a killer terrorizing New York. Detective Zelda Pettibone and mayor aid Gina Greene have lost the track of the Maniac.surfaces in a Bronx High school. Will the students in high school be able to their cell phone use to notice a monster in the midst?

An excellent graphic novel. It is horror. There is a lot of blood in the book. It’s a warning for anyone who does not like bloody gore. It is good. Reading it made me forget time. It is scary yet I remind myself that I am home in the living room in my favorite chair with the doors and windows locked!

ok so the dialogue here is weak and the political themes are too on the nose, too pedantic, but but but here's the thing: maniac of new york hits on something that friday the 13th, in its decades as a franchise has never really succeeded at. we should just be moving jason from set piece to set piece, seeing what hell he can bring in different environments. all of this is an allegory for our modern terror, killers invading crowded places and here we get a school (terrifying!) that goes straight over to yankees stadium (terrifying!) after previously placing him on a subway (terrifying!). just keep the maniac moving from place to place! that's the trick!

Sad that I liked this but didn't love it. The arc of the volume, I think, works well, but the concept is so ambitious given the scope that Kalan is interested in, that I think he wasn't able to go deep enough. We have a moment at Yankee Stadium, for example -- Yankee Stadium!! -- and it's only really a few pages. I feel like if Kalan had 6 issues to get through this instead of 4, it'd be a little more satisfying. But with that said, my biggest complaint is that it didn't hit me as hard as the first volume.

It hits right in the feelings. Mostly with the on the nose comparisons to how tragedies are handled very loosely by those in charge while they only focus on their presentation and money.

I'd say this series needs an extra 2 issues per story but I don't really see them being used apl that well. Really underwhelming ending.

My title: The Slasher Effect
4.6/𝟱

🌱THE EXCELLENT
~ Bloody, gore-y & shades of faded
~ Intriguing story and mystery killer
~ Great art
~ Morally grey characters

The Maniac is loose in New York. He walks around with a cutlass-es cousin, is drawn to noise, slashes with impunity & doesn’t seem to feel much pain - and after a little choppy stop at a high school, he is on his way to Yankee Stadium… BUT there are two cops on his trail. Cops who have had to deal with him before & failed to save a train with over 200 people. Cops who are ill regarded but are desperate to put him down - cops holding the secret of what really happened on the train.

When the Maniac appears again Gina swears she is ready & since she has accepted that the Maniac’s massacre is basically her fault, she takes up the cloak of avenger - REGARDLESS of the cost.

✨𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱.

🌱THE MEH
~ It’s too quick a read! Now who knows how long I must wait for part 3!

Well, Maniac Harry is still running rampant through New York and causing havoc left and right.

I’m really enjoying this series! It’s action-packed and bloody and kinda messed up. Harry was at a school in this volume and that made me SO nervous! But the kills were good, I can’t lie. Lol. The illustrations are just so good! Like I mentioned in my review of the previous volume, I know nothing about art, but I really like the art style of this comic.

Another thing I’m liking about this series is how everyone just sort of lives with Harry being a, you know, maniac. Lol. Like in the last volume how all the mayor cared about was his new train and didn’t give two shits about the task force that was put together to take down Harry. Or how they casually drop Harry Safety Tips or sightings during the morning news. Hell, they even have a song...

This cracked me up! I just can’t with these jaded people. Lol. But anyway, speaking of the task force, I’ve been enjoying following Gina and Zelda as they try to stop Harry. It’s difficult for sure. Harry almost seems supernatural in nature, like Jason. So I’m curious to see where the story goes with that.

But I liked this! I love the action and the bloodiness of it all, I’ve been enjoying getting to know sassy Zelda and badass Gina. Although they’re both pretty badass in their own right. I’m looking forward to reading the next volume!

It's fine, but it would work much better as a graphic novel instead of a (I'm presuming) limited run comic series.

Maniac of New York is a slasher story with a social message, but has too many story lines to follow and not enough space to flesh them all out. I like the idea of a city just getting used to a roving maniac after decades of terror, what that does to the separate and collective psyches of its citizens. I like how maniac watch becomes as common as the weather report and how the government sees the situation just as exploitable and corruption-worthy as any other civic business.

There's a lot of opportunity in a premise like this, lots of avenues to explore, but there's only so many issues, and not enough space to discuss all the issues. (ba-dum, ts) And if there is, that space is not being utilized well. A lot of real estate is (and needs to be) dedicated to the maniac's murderous rampages, because that's what the cover promises, and on top of that, you have a corrupt mayor, two detectives with troubled pasts, a sleazy author getting rich by writing about the maniac, and a little girl who knows the only way to stop the maniac.

All of this would work really well in a lengthier graphic novel format. Here, however, there's just not enough space, and what could result in interesting characters ends up as archetypal and one-point. The mayor's an angry blowhard, one detective's an alcoholic, one can't stop smoking, the writer's immoral, and the little girl is precocious and brave in the face of adversity.

I'm going on and on for something that doesn't really merit it, but I'm kind of sick of these limited run comic series with great premises that just fizzle out on the execution. Bleh.

An ok continuation even it does seem to be just more of the same from the first volume but still on ok read if you are a fan of slashers. As we really do not learn anything new about the Maniac and most of the other characters do not really add much.
