Deborah Grace White was more or less born reading. She grew up on a wide range of books, from classic literature to light-hearted romps. Her love of fantasy was inevitable from the time her father read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to her and her siblings when she was four years old.

The love of reading has traveled with her unchanged across multiple continents, and carried her from her own childhood all the way to having children of her own.

But if reading is like looking through a window into a magical and beautiful world, beginning to write her own stories was like discovering she could open that window and climb right out into fantasyland.

Now she gets to live that childhood dream amidst the fun and chaos of life with her husband and their four kids.

When I started the first book, The Kingdom of Beauty, I was simply expecting an at least decent retelling of Beauty and the Beast, since I had been on a retelling kick. It turned out to be so much more than an old story in new words! The following two were equally impressive.
Set in the land of Solstice, where magic and dragons are considered a normal (albeit not super common to see the dragons) part their world. Each of the three books follow different characters that are expertly interconnected in ways I never saw coming. There are a lot of fun twists and turns, and though I was occasionally able to predict a twist here and there, it was by no means boring. Each book caught me off guard plenty of times. I was particularly surprised by the big plot twist in The Kingdom of Slumber.
The romance is clean, and it is a prominent theme in each book, but it isn't the only drive which is refreshing in fairy tale retellings. These were full of plenty of fighting some pretty epic battles, involving both magic and good, old-fashioned weapons, some serious political issues, and people who are trying to do what's right- striving for each unique purpose.
The characters are unique and relatable. In some ways, they can be very ideal (which is kinda the reason most people read books anyway) but not in a totally unbelievable way. They aren't perfect. They don't always make the right choices. They're each endearing in their own way. Ms. Deborah takes the approach of different perspectives very expertly. Some authors make the mistake of giving us identical ways of thinking and mannerisms in different names; Deborah pulled it off really well though. It was a lot of fun to read from the different perspectives.
One of my favorite aspects of these tales (aside from the different characters, which really were so much fun to read) is the role of the dragons in all the books! The way they help to connect the separate stories together in a cohesive way. And the underlying storyline throughout all the books is growing increasingly mysterious. No spoilers though.
These stories kept me reading for hours straight. If you enjoy a strong romantic element, lots of magic and chivalrous princes, and damsels who don't just sit in distress, then I recommend these books to you. I eagerly look forward to reading the next installments of the The Kingdom Tales.

The Kingdom Tales series is a collection of fairy tale retellings. This box set contains Beauty, a Beauty and the Beast retelling, Slumber, a Sleeping Beauty retelling, and Cinders, a Cinderella retelling. Unusual features of this set of fairy tales are that they all take place in separate but neighboring kingdoms, the royals in the tales are either related or have visited one another growing up, the attitudes toward magic in the various kingdoms are problematical for the main characters, the female characters are all crusaders of one type or another, and the stories are tied together by their link to dragons.

These stories are similar in many ways to the classic versions, but there are also many major differences. For instance, Princess Azalea, the Sleeping Beauty character, activates her curse by pricking her finger on the thorn of a plant instead of the spindle of a spinning wheel. And, although she is under a sleeping spell during the day, she is awake at night, while, in contrast, the other occupants of the castle are under a sleeping spell at night but are awake during the day. The other tales have similar differences from their classic versions.

Is it woke?
Not at all.

Is it good?
These are astoundingly good, and written to be accessible to young teens and enjoyable for adults?

Is it appropriate for your children?
Completely, there is nothing untoward here. White leaves her works blessedly free of sexual misconduct, swearing, woke diatribes, and heavy mature themes. I highly recommend.

Some of the BEST retellings

I’ve read a lot of fairytale retellings and these are at the top of the list under the Lunar Chronicles. I love her story-telling and new surprises and new adventures. Definitely worth reading!

Technically, I'd say 4.5 since Slumber wasn't great to me. That one dragged on without much happening at all, but the other two had me gripped from start to finish.

These stories are so cute. I stumbled across them from another series and thought why not?!? They are perfect for young adult to old adult, or anyone who has a sense of the fantastic.
