WHAT IF YOU WEREN’T THE ONLY ONE WATCHING YOUR DREAMS?

ELLA survives on a steady diet of frozen pizzas, white wine, and rom coms. Her love life is akin to a magician’s vanishing act, and her only friend is a work colleague. But she’s fine, she’s… okay.

Loneliness is a state of mind Ella refuses to acknowledge. And why should she? When she closes her eyes, she’s never alone. She’s with him, her dream man. A man she is literally dating in her dreams.

ADAM knows it’s not right; he knows it’s forbidden, but what choice does he have? He has to know her. He longs to feel her gaze, to be the object of her affection, to hear her laugh up close, to squeeze her hand and hold her tight; to comfort her when she cries.

He’s not obsessed, he’s just in love with someone he can never have. Adam is a stickler for the rules, and it is simply not permitted. He’d never put Ella in danger, not on purpose anyway.

But life doesn’t always go according to plan.

I have finished "Duplicity (The Dangers of Dreaming)" by the talented Chloë L. Blyth, reading it on my tablet using the Kindle app.

This book is the first of a series of three books. Everything starts with Ella, who is always dreaming about her perfect man, living her life like a romcom movie as she loves to watch. She turns her life around, leaving her job and meeting Adam, who bears a strong resemblance to the man of her dreams. Everything goes to hell when she discovers that Adam has an identical brother, Kyle.

This is a perfect plot for a romcom triangle, right? And that is exactly what I thought it would be after reading the first part of the book, but Chloë took a different surprising path (I did not see that coming!) to a more fantasy-paranormal direction that completely changed the plot of the story. I really liked that change, which took me by surprise, and I thoroughly enjoyed the more thriller-like story. I only missed a little bit more action at the end of the book, but something tells me that I will be given that kind of thrill in the next episodes of this series that I am eager to read.

Ella has been single for awhile and worries that no one will live up to the man in her dreams. That's right, not OF her dreams, IN her dreams. Every night, he's right there, and she's fallen in love with him after months of steamy rendezvous'.

Imagine her shock when one night at a function, Adam approaches her. He's the man from her dreams, in the flesh, and it seems he truly is interested in her!

But all is not as it seems and after several suspicious events, Ella wonders if their meeting was natural or premeditated. Adam is hiding secrets, and Ella has a feeling that there is a lot more to her dreams than simple fantasy... but how could Adam have any control over them?

I was provided this book by Author Chloe Blyth and willingly wrote an honest review. And do you know what, it was brilliant! I was sucked in from the first few pages and enjoyed every twist and turn. I loved the clever supernatural elements and the way they intertwined with Ella's existing view of the world. I'll definitely be reading the second book 'Complicity' which is available with Kindle unlimited and the upcoming third book.

I purchased the Kindle format of this story. Duplicity: The Dangers of Dreaming, by the indie author Chloë L. Blyth, is a really fun and original story. The MC is a relatable and endearing 20something woman named Ella who just cannot seem to get it right when it comes to dating in the real world. But her dream man, the one she dates at night in her dreams, well she does just fine with him. Back in the real world, Ella has few friends, just one, really, and that friend is a work-friend. But just like all of the secondary characters in this story, I found that the author supplied enough information about the secondary characters and their relationship to Ella to create a fully developed understanding of who Ella is. From her parents, to her sister, to her co-workers, to some others she meets along the way, the reader is given a full view into Ella’s backstory as a person. All of those other relationships are important in various ways in how Ella deals with her real-life relationship with the mysterious Adam.

So, how to review this story that has lots of twists and eventual reveals without giving away any spoilers is the big question for me as a reviewer of this fantastic and imaginative debut novel by Chloë L. Blyth. First of all, I laughed a lot while reading about Ella and Adam. I don’t think the story is a straight comedy, but the references within the story to Bridget Jones’s Diary and other rom-coms were spot on. There’s more potential danger to the heroine of Duplicity, but my fear level for her safety was never fully engaged to the point where I worried about a potential sad ending. When Ella does face various dangers throughout the story, her quick recovery is usually a result of wry sense of humor no matter what has happened to her.

Speaking of endings, I really have to pay better attention to book titles because I did not register the part in the title of this book where it says ‘Book 1’, and I was shocked when the story ended and I realized I needed to have Book 2 immediately in order to find out what the heck happens! I hope the author is busy writing the second book. I want it right now.

Back to the review. I really enjoyed the original characters in this story. I won’t describe them here because of a fear of spoilers, but the author has written clearly defined characters who bring entirely different banter to the story that keeps the dialogue witty and entertaining as it moves the story along. The unexpected plot twists are enhanced by Ella’s willingness to go along with whatever life throws at her. Sometimes she takes a moment to talk to herself and make peace with her latest situation, but she keeps forging ahead no matter what, and that makes for a fun time for the reader, in my opinion.

If you’re looking for an entertaining story with relatable characters and a unique plot, something you can have a glass or two of wine with while you read, this is definitely the book you want to pick up. It’s available now on Amazon and, yeah, you should get it!

Great debut

This book was an enjoyable, well written read with an unusual storyline. The author has a wonderful imagination which got me thinking about my own dreams and the people that appear in them. For me, it felt like a quirky urban fantasy romance, not the kind of genre I'd normally read but I'm so glad I did. A great debut and I'll certainly look out for more books by this author.

An Imaginative Debut

“Duplicity” is the imaginative debut penned by Chloё L. Blyth. In this first installment of The Dangers of Dreaming Series, we meet a colorful cast of characters, including protagonist Ella-Rose Thompson. I originally “met” Ella and the book’s sub-characters (some with more meatier roles than others!) during a social media writing challenge. The fast banter, teasing-laced-with-an-edge, and nods to things not said, piqued my interest. I’m drawn to authors who put the spotlight on a fast-fired, witty dialogue between multiple characters.

Main character Ella is a young twenty-something, yearning for her own rom-com love story, and stumbling awkwardly through her boring days. From troubles at work; to men who bounce into her bed and then out of her life; to a bitter past involving her family, Ella is struggling to find her way.

But then, the dreams start and life begins to change – when she’s sleeping.

I do not include spoilers in my reviews, so this is going to be tricky. Let’s just say that the author took a trope (our dreams aren’t always for us alone) and put a creative spin on it. Add in the elements of a powerful secret society operating right alongside ours; mistaken identity; the ‘coming of age’ into one’s own extraordinary powers; a covert opposition; a hidden agenda; and several whacky twists… and all the ingredients for an engaging plot are in place.

The secondary characters in “Duplicity” are multi-layered and intriguing. In particular, I was drawn to Kyle. There are many shades in his makeup that I’d like to see more of and assume those drivers will be introduced in later installments in this series. The author provides peeks here and there into his past and his psyche during “Duplicity.” I like Kyle’s boldness, his cheekiness, and his ‘I can’t help but be sexy’ arrogance. Bad man? No, I don’t think so. Wicked? I think a bit – and isn’t that fun?

Author Blyth has chosen to change up the POVs during this book as well. It’s clear who is narrating those chapters, however, and you will not get lost. She splits the POVs between Ella, Kyle, and Adam. Poetry (presumably written by Adam) appears throughout the book at chapter beginnings.

The author also provides ample foreshadowing of trouble to come throughout the storyline. Adam himself lays some of the groundwork during silent musings such as: “And hopefully, she will come with me, when the time comes.” The drama leaps / races forward in the second half of the book.

If you like rom-coms like “Bridget Jones's Diary” – wistfully referenced by “Duplicity’s” own Ella! – you will enjoy the silliness, the bumbling about, the craziness Ella dives into, and the happily-ever-ending-meets-unexpected-cliffhanger brought to you by Chloё L. Blyth.

DUPLICITY
The Dangers of Dreaming: Book 1

Thank you to Chloё Blyth for a free ARC copy in exchange for an honest (spoiler-free) review!!

✴️ DISCLAIMER: The thoughts and opinions in this review are my own. I’m a strong believer that writing, just like any other form of creativity, is art. And art is relative to the viewer’s (or in this case, reader’s) personal tastes. What one reader finds good, another may not, and vice versa. Do not take this review as gospel - do yourself a favour, and read the book yourself. 😘

Ella has a relationship most would kill for: a sexy, charismatic boyfriend, never-ending romantic dates, and a sizzle-worthy sex life.

The only problem? She only gets to see him in her dreams…literally. Then, out of the blue, he’s suddenly real, and her entire world is flipped on its head.

✅ Fast-moving pace that kept me turning pages (and kept me up way past my bedtime!)
✅ A unique story concept I haven’t seen before. Truly refreshing!!
✅ Easy reading, an engaging plot that kept me wanting to know what happens next.
✅ Well-timed twists that kept me guessing, including a cliff-hanger twisted ending that makes me want to read book 2 (Like, right now!!!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
❎ Some parts felt a bit ‘glossed over.’ I wanted to know more about the characters and see more of their lives.
❎ Could use more emotion, more depth, and character development/growth. Let me get to know the characters and really fall in love with them.
❎ Would have loved a little more “show” and a little less “tell.”
Overall, I enjoyed this book and think it’s a solid debut. I can’t wait for the second book to come out!!
I confidently give Duplicity four stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you enjoy romantic fantasy/sci-fi, then this book will hook you. This debut by Chloe Blyth is beautifully written, imaginative and infused with humor. Dreams you can’t control? That immediately grabbed my attention, holding it to the very end. The premise is original and the plot has plenty of action and drama, with enough twists to keep you guessing.
Ella has a history of failed relationships and finally finds the man of her dreams…literally in her dreams. The characters are well-defined and relatable, with hints of backstories that make them more true-to-life. I look forward to finding out what the future brings for them in the upcoming Book 2. As for the Ella-Adam-Kyle love triangle, I have a feeling we’re in for more surprises. I thought I had a personal favorite for Ella’s love interest, but then I took a fancy to the other twin as well, so it will be interesting to see how that turns out. I definitely recommend this book.
I picked up this book as I support Indie authors! And was I pleasantly surprised? Well, yes, yes, I was! This turned out to be a sci-fi romance! I love that genre more than any other.
MCs of this narrative are Ella, Adam and Kyle. Now I can't give away some of my favorite moments as it will spoil the thriller element of this series. Yes, it is not a standalone novel. But I personally love a book with something more to look forward to. Now I cannot wait to read the next one.
The Dangers of Dreaming, book 1 from this series focuses on Dream Walkers revelation in Ella's life. She takes this reveal with a pinch of salt at first but dives in full throttle after the initial hiccup. It shows how love can make you believe in things that sound unreal but true.
Ella is the main focus along with her best friend and also her co-worker, Kristina. That is until Adam walks in. And it gets even better with Kyle! I adored the touch-and-go love-triangle scene between the three MCs. Adam is such a sweetheart and Kyle adds the naughty bit to make it more interesting. Ella is a strong character that handles herself pretty well through the thick of things.
Other supporting characters like Ella's mom, her sister, and her colleagues from work, or Adam's sick mother and his elusive father make this story more relatable.
I read this one in one sitting as I just couldn't put it down. If you love sci-fi romance, this one is the one to go for!
This was an interesting read, I don't think I have read anything like it before and I am all for it!
Ella doesn't have much going on in her life, her relaxing time is a romcom and a few glasses of wine.
She only dates in her dreams, the passion between her and her dream man feels so real and when she sees him in real life she thinks she might be going crazy but lucky at the same time.
When he saves her from an evil man they get to know each other but something doesn't feel right to Ella.
Stranger things start happening and it puts them in danger to figure out what's going on and who or what is behind it.
What an imaginative story! This review will be tricky to navigate without giving away spoilers, so I'll keep it short and sweet. Twenty-something Ella lives a ho-hum life. Not her dream life...but in her dreams, now that is a different story. She's seeing the man of her dreams, Adam, in her dreams, but things aren't what they seem. Great writing, great FMC, and great side characters. Highly recommend this book!
4.5 rounded up. I do love this author's style of writing, some of her turns of phrase really make me giggle. There was one bit about a man's head being so greasy you could fry bacon on it lol. Overall I really enjoyed this book, part romance part sci-fi with lots of action and intrigue. Loved the whole concept of the dream-walkers and Ella being able to control her dreams was really imaginative. Will Adam and Ella get their HEA though? And will Kyle stop interfering? I'll have to keep reading to find out!
Duplicity by Chloe L. Blyth is a brilliant read! It started off a little slow, but once it picked up, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a day. The character development is phenomenal and the story building is so well-crafted—layered, gripping, and emotionally satisfying. Highly recommend!
