That sentence should’ve deterred me from Poe Hanson—it should’ve at least kept me from falling in love with him.
The problem was, by the time he uttered those words it was already too late. He already had my heart, whether he wanted it or not.
From the moment I first saw his sad eyes and guitar-worn hands, I knew I wanted him. His darkness spoke to my darkness.
His hurt danced with my hurt. We seemed like a perfect fit.
Except for one small detail—the only thing he will ever love is music.
When he came to me offering a way I could finally have some part of him—to be friends with benefits—I knew it was dangerous, destined to fail.
I'd always need more.
But it didn’t matter. I took him in any way I could have him, knowing one day my heart would pay the price.
I didn’t expect to be anything more than friends. I didn’t foresee our damaged puzzle pieces fitting perfectly together. It didn’t occur to me that while I was handing my heart over to him; he was unknowingly doing the same.
Most of all, I never thought the scars of my past could be mended by a love that had always been founded on rejection.
Founded on Rejection is an angsty age gap romance and the fourth interconnected standalone in The Mixtape Series.
Kat Singleton is a bestselling contemporary romance author best known for writing Black Ties and White Lies. She specializes in writing elite banter and angst mixed with a heavy dose of spice. Kat strives to write an authentically raw love story for her characters and feels that no book is complete without some emotional turmoil before a happily ever after.
She lives in Kansas with her husband, her two kids, and her two doodles. In her spare time, you can find her surviving off iced coffee and sneaking in a few pages of her current read.
One of my most anticipated contemporary romances this year, and let me tell you how it just fed me the GF who reads x the BF who reads and buys her books
Not to mention the Monica and Aiden scenes, which made this book even better because I missed these two so much. Not to mention Landon, the highlight and savior of the Lennon and Poe relationship, or should I say Poe's life, because this man appears to require all the assistance he can get.
Returning to Lennon and Poe's character and relationship, I would say they had the calmest relationship of all the couples in this series, but that doesn't mean they don't have this kind of depth regarding the characters, because they do. They appear to be the most chill, but they can also get dirty when they want to.
Aside from the trope here that I liked, I enjoyed the character depth and development these two had in the story as they overcome their scarred past and embrace their self and take more control of their lives—which, I believe, is the plot of this book other than the romance plot, which I did enjoy.
As for the romance, I honestly expected it to be angsty, like real angsty, like how angsty Founded on Deception was, or even more- but, sadly, it wasn't. To me, it was more of a fluffy angsty, which was also good, but I was expecting it to be angsty based on the premise of the story.
Nonetheless, this one was excellent. I really liked the plot, the characters, the romance, the steam, and, of course, the highlights of this book; Monica and Aiden, and Landon- to which Poe was extremely jealous aside from the books, that part was really funny to me, and I'm hoping Landon gets his own book.
its kinda boring, the plot's kinda unoriginal (quite, bookish girl falls for tattooed guy with troubled past so he can never fall in love until her), and its just overall meh.
also, it it pure coincidence that i read about 2 "bookish" couples naming their kids austen back 2 back? wiiiild
p.s. but i recommend reading the extended epilogue
Trigger Warnings include: mentions of alcohol and drug abuse, discussion of death of character(s), sexual assault, rape
We’re just two very broken people trying to figure out how to heal the other without quite healing ourselves.
Alright, let’s see if I can write this without crying…I may never manage to collect my feelings about this book, or the end of my favorite series. But I’m going to attempt. I know that this is an interconnected stand-alone, but there are so many moments in this book that won’t mean the same if you haven’t spent time with the rest of the characters. Which I recommend doing anyway! This series feels like home to me. The characters have become a part of me. And no, I will not play favorites. Especially after spending one on one time with Lennon and Poe. From the moment Lennon met Poe, she couldn’t keep away from him. His demons called to hers. And the moment Poe truly saw her, it was impossible for him to see anything else. They are both such vulnerable people. Lennon hides in her books, Poe hides in music. But they can’t hide from each other. Their demons seek each other. It was beautiful seeing them be vulnerable with each other. Giving pieces of themselves to each other. Poe raised my standards to impossible limits. Just when I thought he couldn’t raise them more, he did. This book is for the book lover! Poe is IT. Lennon is hands down one of my favorite female leads! Even though I know they’re safe with each other, I’ll always have the need to protect them. I cried for full chapters. They constantly made me laugh. They filled my heart with so much love. My heart won’t ever completely heal from this. They’ve taken broken pieces with them. This is perfect, and a beautiful ending to my favorite series. I’m ready for a reread!
good girl: 5 pretty girl: 4

Fuck, just be with you.” • “I’d rather be hurt by you than always wonder what it was like to be loved by you.” • “Anything with you has been everything to me.” • “I’ve never asked for perfection.” • “I’ll make it my mission to prove to you that you aren’t the only one who feels this way.” • “There’s no me without you.” • “You taste like mine.”
9/10 Dirty Birdy 8/10 Age Gap 5/10 Forced Proximity 9/10 Friends (with benefits) to Lovers 5/10 Slow Burn 10/10 Tearjerker 10/10 Series
Swooning! Founded on Rejection was the perfect, deep, angsty, full of emotion feel good story & ending to the Mixtape Series.
Lennon & Poe!
Past trauma and how they each cope are the root of who they each are. They each go through dark, defining moments. They each cope by holding onto their traumas - Lennon disappears into books & Poe finds his solace in music. In each of their darkness, they find the beautiful moments. These beautiful moments are what makes this slow burn story intriguing and completely swoon worthy.
Love & loss are the key themes to this love story. Lennon & Poe go through so much but with each other they learn to love themselves & each other. There is so much exploring, growth & defining moments between them that you stay hooked to their story.
Poe is everything you would envision as the sexy bassist of a band. He is deep, thoughtful & super caring. Lennon is so much more than what you see. She is full of adventure, independent & is strong willed.
I loved every second of these characters.
Seriously, Lennon & Poe's story was definitely worth the wait and the perfect HEA!
*This is a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the series in order to understand a little more of the backstory.
Finally we get Lennon and Poe’s story! It’s angsty emotional and definitely gave me all the feels I really enjoyed reading about these two definitely another fantastic story in this series . Loved it!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Guys, I loved this book! I went in thinking it was going to be super angsty and heartbreaking…. It was just the cutest, heart hugging read! This is the perfect short and sweet read to make your weekend or pull you out of a reading slump. - Lennon and Poe are 🔥 they are both two lost got messes and I loved watching them find their way - The unrequited love aspect was done in such a cute way, I feel like everyone relates a little to their first crush - This story was like a love letter to romance book lovers, all the bookish references and bookstore scenes 🙌 - Age Gap - Traumatic pasts - Rockstar MMC Honestly the whole mixtape series was great, each book had such a different direction even within the same series. Not to mention these are some of my all time favorite Ashes & Vellichor covers.
Lennon is the little sister of Nora (you meet her in Founded on Goodbye, book one in the series, as Nash’s love interest) and currently on tour with her and Nash. She’s a major introvert with a traumatic past that tore her and her sister apart, but they’re now working on their relationship. She spends her days with her head in books living in another world… and pining after Poe.
Poe is the bassist in Nash’a band and has been with him for a long time now. He too has a past but his is more haunting. However, this man has a heart of gold! He’s a lot older than Lennon and determined he never deserves to love or be loved.
These two! My babies! I love them so much. I love the glances and thoughts in their heads of each other. I love the curiosity and angst hidden behind them both. They crash into each other in unexpected ways but they are exactly what the other needs in every way.
From start to finish I was so invested and in love. My heart soared and I couldn’t get enough. The gestures are sweet and magical and inspiring. Kat Singleton sealed up this series with the most perfect couple and I’m totally in love with Poe!
This book was just the perfect end of the mixtape series. I mean what more could you ask for than a female main character who also loves books and understands what words on paper can make you feel.
Lennon did not have an easy past, due to a traumatic event she not only stopped her passion for dancing, but also became more distant from other people. Immersing herself in the world of books quickly became a daily routine of hers.
Poe is moody, the bass player of a band and Lennon's secret crush. Although Poe knows about Lennons crush for him, he cant accept it. He carries with him the feeling of not being able to love others, since he has already lost several loved ones. He is afraid to hurt more people by showing his love to them.
But what happens when they both start to go from friends to friends with benefits and are deciding to check off Lennon's naughty bucket list together, it soon ceased to be a more than just a friendly affair.
Trigger warnings: Past sexual assault Death. Alcohol abuse
Lennon: Following her sister and brother along on their world tour. She gets a crush on Nash’s bassist. Poe. She’s crushing hard and he hasn’t even noticed she existed.
Poe: a bassist for a popular singer. A troubled history that makes any type of relationship hard. He offered a friend with benefits situation.
Wow! This book was more than I could ever have imagined when it came to Lennon and Poe. I felt like we didn’t know much about either character and I was so pleasantly surprised about this book. Despite everything in Poe’s life that could have gone wrong he worked so hard to make it all right with Lennon. That sweet girl had so much love left in her life and he pulled her from her own version of darkness. Absolutely beautiful.
This is an excellent series and although each book is about a different couple, I would recommend reading from the beginning. I could definitely relate to Lennon the way she got lost in her books ... lol. It broke my heart that Poe thought he couldn't love anyone because if he did, they would pay the ultimate price. Poe really had no idea that he was falling for Lennon right from the beginning, even though he thought he was keeping her in the friend's category. Although I really liked the premise of the book, I just wished it would have had a few twists and turns, as I found myself skimming over some parts. I loved how the author brought in the romance book component throughout the story ... very clever. I sure hope that Landon gets a book because I know he has a story to be told.
Lennon is Nora's little sister and she goes on tour with Nash's band, so the sisters can repair their relationship. Lennon was an aspiring dancer, but because of a traumatic experience in her teens, has become an introvert who lives in the pages of the books she reads. Poe is the bassist in the band and he is older than his bandmates. He has lost everyone he loves ... his best friend, his parents and his girlfriend. Music helped to mend his soul, but he's still leery of loving someone, knowing he will probably lose them too. Poe sees Lennon watching him and everyone knows she has a crush on him, but she is too young for him. And besides he doesn't want to break her heart as he knows she wants a relationship like she reads about in her books and he will never be able to give her that.
I received an early copy courtesy of the author in exchange for a honest review.
I can’t get enough of what @authorkatsingleton writes.
This book was everything I wanted in terms of exploring Lennon and Poe’s story. We first met these characters in the previous 3 novels, and I’m so glad we could revisit them in Founded on Rejection.
Their past trauma and demons is what connects them and I loved how they helped each other heal and grow as individuals. This is one element that had me completely hooked.
While the previous three novels were extremely spicy, I loved how this novel fleshed out the characters even more - and don’t get me wrong, them spicy scenes were 100% spicy! (That bookstore scene tho 🥵).
I think these characters were fleshed out well. Poe sometimes got on my nerves because I just wanted him to COMMUNICATE his feelings, but also I feel like Lennon needed to be more straight up about what she wanted because the guy just doesn’t want to assume. However, this was obviously intentional so I can accept that 😅
This novel does go into heavy discussions around rape and sexual assault, so please check the TW before you read! I do think that Kat went about this in a really great way when writing this novel, because Poe was all about that CONSENT! And he never pushed Lennon into more than what she wanted.
*adds Poe to shelf of Mixtape boyfriends*
Overall I loved this book and I absolutely need more novels from Kat Singleton asap.
This is the 4th, and honestly my favorite, book in the Mixtape series. All the books in the series can be read independently, but they are interconnected, which means you will enjoy them more if you’ve read the rest of the series. Since I adore this series, I vote to read the other books before diving into this one.
What to expect 🎸 Romance book-loving FMC 🎸 “I’ll never love" MMC 🎸 Age gap (he’s older) 🎸 Slow Burn 🎸 Friends (with benefits) to Lovers
I have an absolute soft spot for an FMC that is also a lover of romance books and that fits Lennon to a tee. Lennon has a massive crush on Poe with no plans to do anything about it. For her, it’s a situation of like calls to like, and she can tell he has some issues to work out. We get some more information about her past SA, and it made my heart break. I like that with Poe, she starts as shy, but once she is more comfortable around him, she has no problem being more direct with him. I would have loved more scenes with Adrian because I felt we got to see more interactions between them in the previous book, but I did enjoy the bits I got.
I’ve been intrigued by Poe since we met him, and even though he’s not a massive part of the previous books, the times we see him, I was hoping that he would get a book and that it’s Lennon he ends up with is even better. Lennon called it right that he has his demons to contend with, and once we learn what happened in his past, I just wanted to jump into the book and hug the man. This man plans the most notable dates for Lennon once she agrees to his idea to help her explore her sexual book fantasies. Poe clarifies that he is not the relationship type from the beginning and many times throughout the book, but he still gets involved because he can’t help himself with it comes to Lennon.
I feel like I’ve been on a slow burn kick, and this was done so well! The idea to become friends with benefits comes from Poe when he accidentally reads her naughty annotations that he hasn’t been privy to. We get some Good Girl moments, but when Poe calls her “Pretty Girl,” I melt every time. I couldn’t pick a favorite moment, but the bookstore scene deserves an honorable mention.
Poe and Lennon have my heart. This is the last book in the mixtape series and might be my favorite (still love you Nash&Nora).
Lenny's character was something I can relate to on a personal level. She wasn't much of a people's person and was always lost in the fictional world and I think not only me but we all can relate to her with this. If you've read the previous books then you might have an idea of the trauma she went through but there was more to the story and my heart ached for her.
Poe was usually the quiet one of their band unlike Nash or Landon but he likes to read, I mean he is my dream man for sure. He was such a sweetheart, he sure has demons but the way he always treated Len with respect and care *my heart soooooon*.
Lennon had a crush on Poe since the moment she saw him but Poe never noticed her until recently because for him she was just Nora's little sister and he didn't know when she became more. It all started casual but it became so much for both of them and the smut scenes 'he wanted to do everything she highlighted in the books to her' i mean phewwww🥵🥵🥵.
They both had chemistry and I was like just fuck already you two, I looooooooved these two with all my heart and still can't believe that this series is over.
"I'll make it my mission to prove to you that you aren't the only one who feels this way."
I was so excited to know more about Lennon! Since her first appearance in her sister’s book( Founded on Goodbye), I knew I needed to know more about her. Same goes with Poe! He’s a bassist in Nash’s band and I was dying to know more about him and how his relationship with Lennon was going to be.
Both of them have a traumatic past and they have such amazing hearts and beautiful souls. They really complete each other. They had one of the best developments!! Their demons talked with each other and their chemistry is another level. They found love in books, music and in each other. It was beautiful seeing them getting comfortable with each other and that being their safe place. They drew stars around each other’s scars.
I was so into the story, they really caught my attention. It was a mix of emotions indeed. Not only for Poe and Lennon but this is the fourth of the series. They made me feel so many things through this series that are going to be unforgettable. I must say I’ll always miss them. Kat Singleton did an amazing job as always showing us how love can cure and heal. And no, I can’t choose a favorite couple or a favorite book. I’ll miss them all so much. I love them.
- Thank you for the ARC and for the opportunity! *ARC RECEIVED IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW*
I was really intrigued by Lennon during the whole Mixtape series and I’m so glad she finally had her happy ending because she deserves it so much. Poe is the kind of man that denies his feelings even if they are punching him in the face which gives us an emotional book with two broken mcs healing each other. I loved seeing all the previous couples in this one, specially Nora and her relationship with her sister. I’m sad this is goodbye, I would love to see Landon’s story.
Lennon came out on tour with the band as a chance to reconnect with her sister, Nora. The first time she saw the bassist for the band, she fell for him and fell HARD. Since she knew she didn't have a chance of him noticing the shy quiet bookworm who hid on the fringes of their big group, she should be able to look at the broody long-haired guitarist all she wants. He wouldn't want to be with a broken soul such as her anyway, right?
Until the night Aiden, Nash’s little brother, decides to announce to everyone the extent of her crush. She’s in shock until she looks over and notices Poe is staring at her the same way she has longed for.
Poe Hanson is broken though, there dark secrets he hides under the guise of his music. After walking her back to the busses, he was astonished to find a kindred spirit who enjoys reading and books as much as he does. He declines a relationship with her, but he may be willing to check some things off her list. Can he keep his heart out of the equation, though?
This slow burn took me a little while to get into, but don't give up on PoeNon. While the embers take a while to catch, once that fire ignites, it becomes a raging inferno. The items they check off her spicy bucket list, Poe is adamant to show Lennon that sometimes 'book boyfriends' don't always 'do it better!' 10 stars and a whole atrium of butterflies!
Broken and drawn to each other. Lennon and Poe find solace in each other despite their age difference. They see each other in ways no ones else can and that keeps them connected. It was an emotional read and well I don’t know what else to say except if you have read the series the you won’t be disappointed.
I don’t want to say this is my favourite book in the series, they are all fantastic, but….something about this one is perfection. The entire story and the characters of Lennon and Poe intrigued me when we first learned of them individually in Founded on Goodbye (book 1) and this book elevated my love for them in the best way possible! This story was more than I could have hoped for and will easily stay with me.
I love how these two are drawn to one another, they have an instant connection and fascination that neither are really quite sure of why, but they can’t help but feel. They have so much in common, but also so stricken with trauma from past life events that they are both left with broken pieces.
This book has you enthralled at page one, easily sucking you into the world this author has created. Both Lennon and Poe are relatable characters, they are flawed and heartbreakingly beautiful. Everything about them is deep, with so many faucets. The chemistry the share is undeniable and off the charts!
I loved Lennon so much-her realism and feelings throughout the book were perfect, I mean who doesn’t love some quiet alone time with a good book? She may seem quiet and shy, but her undeniable strength, courage and self awareness is fantastic. Lennon had a crush, a crush she new was one-sided and was okay with that, never thought it would be more so she accepted it for what it was. Poe, even through all his fears and adamant feelings against love, he is kind, caring, sexy, falls to hard, and the ultimate book boyfriend you could hope for! I loved watching as the story progressed how their connection deepened, strengthen and developed into something more both emotionally and physically. All while hoping it will all be enough for them to get them their HEA.
I’m not sure I can express correctly the emotions I have for this book (all extremely positive), not only was it enjoyable, sweet and an overall phenomenal read but beautiful in so many different ways. It was an amazingly written story that has you captivated and swooning the entire time.
It is bittersweet to have this being the last book in the series but I could not have asked for a better couple or a more authentic and perfect story for them. If you love emotion, angst, slow-burn, friends with benefits this book is for you!
I highly recommend not only this book but the entire Mixtape series as must reads!

ARC Review of Founded On Rejection by Kat Singleton * * * * * A rocking romance of how a one sided crush turns into a full blown intense romance!
Lennon had a massive crush on Poe, the handsome man inbher sister's fiancée's band with the pain In his eyes. Only, everyone else knew she liked him, including Poe, and it wasn't really mutual. Until Poe decided to become friends. A connection to books is how it started. A date to the bookstore, a few notes here and there...then something that was private has coming into Poe's possession that just amped up the sexual tension. A bucket list is starting to get ticked off, however, feelings were not really accounted to have developed along the way. Things just got more complicated... Two haunting pasts, one that will not let go or move on. Good luck butterflies, a rocking wedding, and best friends who just love stepping to everyone's business.
Loved the meet cute tying into the meet cute! Landon, you sneaky little devil!
This is book four of the Mixtape Series and I'm so happy to finally get Lennon and Poe's book!! Ahh!
It was so good! I laughed and cried throughout their book. After they meet, it felt like they had this instant connection that they tried to cover up with their agreement by being "friends with benefits". However, those agreements seem to fall apart sooner or later. Lennon is a total bookworm and loves her books. Poe hides in his music but, who can't they hide from? Each other! I loved reading through their ups and downs, their vulnerability with each other, and how they grew in their relationship! I also loved reading the other Mixtape couples in this book. I was very pleased with this final book and am sad to see the series has ended but, I also can't wait to see what Kat has in store for us!
5 Stars! I definitely recommend this book plus, the whole series!!
Oh my god. Where do I start? First, brb crying since the whole last 1/4 of the book made me cry both out of frustration and happiness. And then the extended epilogue making seem like this is the official end?! Some tears were shed. If Nash and Nora didn’t hold a special place in my heart, this would be my favourite book in the series hands down. Lennon is just so relatable and as if Poe isn’t every book lovers dream man. This book is mainly about friends to lovers, friends with benefits, age gap and broken main characters and while yes, their relationship is on fire, the healing they both go through and the self worth Lennon finds along the way, is the real gem in this book. Poe and Lennon are both characters that I found so relatable and lovable and rooted for them to succeed the whole time. And I’m I devastated this may be the end for the whole Mixtape world? Yes. Yes, I am.
I was waiting for this book since I finished Founded on Deception and it was worth the wait!
Poe and Lennon are amazing both as individual characters and as a couple. Even though this is an interconnected stand alone, I totally recommend reading the previous books first so that some of the moments in the book have more meaning.
There is no way that I can choose a favourite character or couple from this series, especially after reading this book.
These are two peo-ple whos souls just connect and call out to each other. They are both vulnerable people though and this makes both hide away in their own vices. For Lennon it’s her books and for Poe its his music.
Poe is one of those characters who, just when you think your standards for men can’t get any higher, he raises them to be impossible. This was an amazing ending to a series that I loved!
