Five Second Rainbird

Macayla
"He’s rude, abrupt and doesn’t know how to smile."

My new landlord, ex-Special Forces Vic Gate, is intense, and even that’s too domesticated a word to describe him. Extreme raw power seems more appropriate. Or maybe godlike, except there isn’t anything forgiving or merciful in him. Then again, he gave me and my little boy Jackson a week to vacate his cabin instead of seven minutes.

But the dangerously quiet, six-foot-four muscled wall does something to me. And it’s way more than a sweet fluttering in my belly. This is an eagle-diving, bee-stinging, fire-breathing-dragon fluttering that causes all kinds of chaos inside me.

He’s everything I need to stay clear of. And it shouldn’t be hard to do considering he wants nothing to do with us.
Until his protectiveness emerges and I soon discover there is much more to the cold, gruff Vic Gate.

But falling for a highly trained killer with nightmares crammed into his dark, lethal eyes comes with consequences.
The question is whether I can survive them.

Vic Gate
“You won’t survive me, rainbird.”

Cold. Hard. Unbending.
Nothing to unhinge me.
That is until her.
The little rainbird perched inside my cabin with her ocean-eyes that are scarred into me.
Now I want more.
The problem is whether I’ll destroy her in the process.

3 It Has Always Been Everything Stars ⭐

She is his reward. Vic Gates may never have forgotten the little girl or her random act of kindness, but the grown version of her terrifies him. It's ironic since the lethal ex Special Forces, is no match for this woman who owns his heart.

Fuck, it was all of it. I didn't care. I wasn't fighting it any longer.

She was mine. She'd always been mine. And there was no chance in hell I was letting my Rainbird take flight.

Macayla is trying to fix the broken pieces for her child Jackson. The son who she's just gotten back and is riddled with trauma. Having taken refuge in Vic's cabin, the man himself is pissed when he comes home and finds them there. His first instincts are to have them gone.

But in this instance where like recognizes like, Vic knows personal demons intimately. And as he gets to know Macayla and Jackson, his possessiveness becomes full blown and he's struggling to let them go.

5 Second Rainbird is an emotional story that switches from past to present and deals with many delicate topics such as abuse and neglect. It was certainly gut wrenching in parts but watching the relationship between Vic and Jackson unfold was beautiful. Plus this author excels at writing old school overprotective heroes that you can't help but swoon over.

My issues were the wordy dialogues that dragged out the pace of the story and the lack of any real romance between Vic and Macayla. Also, this is evidently the first book in the Underground Horsemen, and I was a little overwhelmed with all the characters introduced. I loved the premise and the feels of the story but it was just too slow paced for me.

An emotional slow burn romance read, yet the solid romance between Vic and Macayla was not sufficient.
The writing was amazing, the story suspenseful and the cover beautiful! Jackson, Macayla’s son was a great character in this story!!

Nashoda Rose's Five Second Rainbird is an intense and emotionally charged novel that takes the reader on a journey of redemption, passion, and love!

From his troubled childhood to his time in the military and beyond, Vic Gate is one alpha hero that has been a mystery for a long time. All Rose fans have been waiting for his story and now it has finally arrived! When Vic was a young boy he met the beautiful Macayla. Although Vic has always experienced pain with touch, Macayla is able to break through his exterior and truly make a connection. Years later, he meets Macayla once again. She is now a single mom who has taken refuge in Vic's cabin in the woods. Vic, not excited at all about his new tenant is once again faced with the demons of his past and the angel that seemed to calm the fury he has inside.

description

description

Told in dual POV, Five Second Rainbird is expertly crafted, with each chapter building upon the previous one to create a cohesive and well-rounded work of art. The tension between Vic and Macayla is palpable from the very first page and only intensifies as the story progresses. One thing that I particularly enjoyed about this novel was the way the ensemble of characters is incredibly well developed and only builds the anticipation for more!

Overall, If you are a fan of Nashoda Rose, then you will not be disappointed with Five Second Rainbird. The plot is complex and engaging, and the writing is simply superb! Vic and Macayla offer an explosive start to the Underground Horsemen series and I cannot wait to see what is in store for the next book!

I have been desperately awaiting Nashoda Rose's story with Vic Gate. There was something about his untouchable vibes that had me so intrigued. Well let me officially say this book was completely worth the wait!!! OMG!! Vic Gate was epic!!!!! I absolutely fell in love with him and Macayla and their amazinggg love story!!! 5 Second Rainbird had such incredible tension and banter and smoldering chemistry. This was an extraordinary five-star story that Rose delivered on and then some!!

What I loved more than anything was how this author was able to keep Gate as authentic as possible. He was damaged and hurt and suffered from ghosts from his past. But Rose was also able to effectively highlight Gate's vulnerability and protective instincts where it came to Macayla and Jackson. I could not love this story anymore! I seriously am so obsessed with this Underground Horsemen series! Now I just need the next book stat! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula ❤️

Wow. I haven’t read this author in years. I’m so glad I read this book. The blurb just jumped out to me. A flawed, broken and dark hero. Add grumpy to the mix. Hell fucking yes. Vic Gate has appeared in another series but 5 Second Rainbird can easily be read as a stand-alone. Vic has history that goes way back with the single mother, Macayla who lives in his cabin.

I liked that she wasn’t afraid of him despite how hard Vic tried to make her fear him or uncomfortable. She and her son Jackson made Vic want to let her in. He tried his hardest not too but the connection he had formed with her when he was 12 and she was 5 proved to be too strong.
It’s an emotional and at times dark story given the topics. Abuse played a huge factor in both their lives and how it shaped them as adults. Especially Vic.

The reader gets to meet the other 4 Horsemen and I’m already invested in all of them. The author has laid a strong foundation in the first book so there’s a lot of potential for the remaining books and overall story.
I’m so excited to read Callum’s book, which is next, cause these Horsemen have captured my attention. Big time.

I have read every single one of Nashoda Rose's books, I devour them...I love every genre she delves into and she, simply put, sucks me into in, every single time...

And I have waited for such a long time for her next book...for this book...and when Nash gifted me with this arc (with Vic Gabe and Macayla North's story), I knew deep down that it would make a mark on me...it would leave a trace...

There are no simple words for me to use and describe how each and every one of her stories impacts me...it's as simple as an experience you have to live through on your own as it is a whole other level of insightful...

there are no wrong answers here, it's a transcendent notion of being a part of something so complex and layered in emotions, thoughts and sights...even thought the words on paper make you easily flow through motions as the characters do, you feel that special bond of presence, it marks you on this journey of remarkable storytelling, impeccable portrayals of characters, with all their flaws and rigid hollows that seemingly marred them from the inside, no, they were shaped into more solid and palpable despite of it...

simply brilliant, as I needed it to be...

As this book is a start of the whole new series Underground Horsemen, yes there are 4 more complex and complicated alpha males, next to Vic Gate (Callum, Saint, North and Jaeg) to follow in their own stories, who will bring you to a whole new level of overwhelmed, touched in winning your hearts over and over again...

Nashoda Rose,i really missed you and i’m só glad you’re back!!
Not only that, you’re on a roll!
Because Five Second Rainbird is every bit the story only you can write…
With a tortured hero that doesn’t see himself worthy of the woman he loves.
With a damaged heroine that desperately needs someone to love her and keep her safe.
In a world that i love and am very happy to return to!

Vic and Macayla met a long time ago.
In fact they met at the lowest point in Vic’s 12 year old life.
But Macayla gave him a way to deal with the pain, even if she was only 5.
She even invited him to her birthday….

19 years later,Vic comes home after a mission to deal with the demons inside his head.
But there’s someone on his property….and he never invites anyone!
To his shock,he looks into the blue eyes he never forgot…and she’s not alone.
She has a son with her,and one look at him is enough to see the trauma in his eyes.
But they can’t stay,he’s bound to hurt them one way or the other….
Until he hears where she plans to go,and he knows he can’t let her because it means trouble.

Macayla allowed her father to bully her into giving up her son, thinking he’d go to a good family.
Finding out the truth was devastating and she did everything she could to find him.
Now that she has Jackson back, she’ll do everything she can to help him through the traumas he’s experienced in his short life.
A quiet place, one where her father won’t find her, will give them the peace they both need.
And then the owner comes home….the very attractive, grumpy and lethal owner,Vic.
The one she can’t help, but want to see more of….

The protective feelings he has for Macayla and Jackson only increase, and he knows he’s in deep.
His Rainbird is one of the few people that isn’t afraid of him,not counting his friends, and she’s the only one who’s touch soothes him, instead of hurt..
And when he stops resisting, when he admits his needs,he feels a peace he’s never felt….ever.
Until it goes to hell….

What Vic went through in his life, the abuse he experienced as a kid,and the effect it had on his life, was heartbreaking.
But it was so beautiful to see him help Jackson deal with his traumas!
That alone was evidence he’s a good man, even if he didn’t see it himself.
And Macayla saw….she knew he’d do anything to keep them both safe.
She found a man she could lean on,a man that respected her, even if he acted a little….grumpy.
Being treated the way she was by her father,Vic was the one to show her her worth.

This story hurt,it made me cry,but at the same time it made me smile.
Because of what Vic and Mac went through and because of the way they healed eachother.
Because of the way Jackson looked up at Vic,and the way he “borrowed” his strenght.
Vic and Macayla were his safe place, and they both supported him in their own way.
As adults should….
In short, i loved them all and i can’t wait for Zero Crow!!

“…if you count to five when something hurts really bad, the hurt can only get you for five seconds, and then you have to let it fly away. Just like a bird.”

She’s baaaaaaaaack!!!
Nashoda Rose has been one of our favourite Authors since we read her first book back in 2013. She writes compelling, addictive stories with characters you can’t help falling in love with as soon as you meet them. She writes drama that keeps you on your toes and emotions that’ll have your hearts breaking yet soaring high with passion at the same time. So, to say we were excited to dive into Five Second Rainbird is a bit of an understatement.

‘Jesus. I’d put a gun to her head. Her. My goddamn Rainbird. The girl who gave me reason to live. Who stopped the pain. Who breathed air into my lungs when I didn’t deserve it. When I should’ve been starved for air just like he’d been.’

Underground Horsemen is a new and exciting series from Nashoda Rose, with Five Second Rainbird being Vic Gate’s. He’s an ex-underground fighter, ex-military, and ex-special forces all-around hard arsed emotionally scarred hero and we fell in complete love with him from the get-go. This Author sure knows how to start a new series with an almighty bang of an impact. We loved every bloody minute of his and Macayla’s story.

“Stay, Rainbird,” he whispered.

‘This. This was why we couldn’t stay. Because I couldn’t breathe. Because I wanted him. Because wanting him was dangerous. Because nothing could ever come of it. Because I’d break and let him in.’

Nashoda Rose has a unique way of writing, it’s instantly recognisable. She lures your heart into an intricately emotional web that snares you, whilst bombarding you with gripping moments that completely blindside you. It’s a talent we’ve greatly missed. Hook line and sinker, we were consumed and just know that this series is going to be another epic one from this Author. Old school at its very best.

“I won’t make a promise I can’t keep. That means I’ll never promise you I’ll come back from a mission. But I don’t want to go another day with breath still in my lungs without knowing you’re mine.”

This book was instantly recognisable as a Nashoda Rose book due to its dark nature, the scarred and broken characters, and the inner fighting they all go through to overcome the hard lessons of their pasts. But there’s a real sense of beauty and utter preciousness that always shines through and this Author nails that every single time. Vic Gates has to be one of the most beautiful characters in this respect. As honest as the day is long, protective, loyal with a gentle disposition that belies his violent retribution on the world to avenge, save and protect the innocents from the criminal abhorrent dregs of society. In return, Macayla is fighting her own demons, with scars running deeper than water, trying to find peace and safety for her and her son. Her story broke our hearts and the way in which it unfolded with Vic at its very core was truly beautiful yet heart-breaking to read.

‘Promise you’ll never say goodbye while I sleep. Because I’m in too deep.’

Five Second Rainbird was stunning; it was poetically beautiful, it was harrowing, tragic, dark, passionate and so damn good. We loved it! We’re patiently impatient for the next instalment in what promises to be a fantastic series!

“You have everything I am, Rainbird. Always. Don’t ever forget it, baby.”

everything in this book was too much .
Too dramatic . Too much horrible things accrued to everyone .
Too strong feelings all the time !
It tried too hard to be intense , but I felt that it was ridiculous .
I like books that are more refined . Not everything should be so big . sometime little gestures and small nuances are the strongest .

I love all her heroes, but I especially love her heroines.
They're strong, they stand their ground and they are survivers and I especially loved that she had a child.

5 Welcome Back Stars!!!!!

OK, I FLOVE this author and I was DYING to get my hands on this book on release day but had to wait where I had time in quiet peace lol to devour it and yep, I devoured it alright!

Superb, I mean this author for me personally can do no wrong but this book was written absolutely poetically and beautifully. I loved seeing the old characters pop up and just loved me Mac, Vic, Jackson, oh my sweet, Addie, Saint, Ethan and of course hottie too, lolol, and anyone else in between esp from the bar!

This story was not your typical "romance" novel, oh no, it was filled with such raw, emotional depth that the storyline itself was utterly engaging. The romance or rather lol lack of it with the exception of sprinkles here and there was just fantastic and I cannot wait for the rest of the series:)

Just simply put......awesome, emotional, raw, gut wrenching on every level for both Mac and Vic, just pure breathtaking emotions that had me flying high then low and then ultimately ending up high in the sky in flight with a huge ass smile on my face and in total and utter love of these characters lol!!!! GREAT freaking stuff as always from Nashoda Rose!!!!!!!

110 pages in and I know nothing. Nothing about the main characters. Nothing about the story. Everything is a mystery. While I'm on board with a slow burn romance and even a slow revealing mystery, I need something to grab hold of and sustain me. There was nothing of any substance to keep me wanting to turn the pages. I have a feeling this was going to be one of those where not much of anything happens until the last quarter of the book.

Now this is obviously a spin-off from another series and maybe if I had read the original series, I would have more foundation to enjoy this story. This, for me, does not read like a standalone.

4.5⭐️

This is my first Nashoda Rose book and I really enjoyed it. It's only the first book in the series but I'm already looking forward to the rest of the series. I know I'm going to enjoy every one of them. All of the Horsemen are broken souls and Vic is one of them.

Vic and Macayla's story sucked me into their story. I was just so invested and I want to get deep into Vic's soul and to know his story. And Mac and Jackson. I loved both of them. My heart ache for them, I don't think I'm doing any justice reviewing their story. It was an emotional roller coaster and I loved how they came about in each other's lives again.

I can't wait for Callum's story next.

Vic Gate’s story is FINALLY HERE❣️

Five second Rainbird is the first book in this new series and a spin off from Tear Asunder and Unyielding series and all I can say is it was worth the wait😍

When I first started reading, this book enveloped me and I felt like I’d finally come home😁 I could not put it down even though I wanted to savour the book, it soon became clear that Vic Gate was intense and complicated and he was going to devour me whole, much like I did with his story😉

I’m soooo excited for this new series and I can’t wait to learn more about the other Horsemen and other stories that can come from this one as there are a few hints to other stories throughout that I know will blow our minds. Loved Macayla, Vic and Jackson and I look forward to seeing them again in the future. I received an advanced copy and willingly leave my honest review❤️

First the signification of the book title once you read it is going to hit you strong and centre.

Now let me indulge in this beauty 😍😍❤️

I absolutely loved this book.
The scarred, damaged hero. Vic
The once was sunshine heroine who's now need someone to shine on her. Mac
The chemistry and tension between them. The slow burn was at its finest, I don't mind slow burn as long as the sexual tension and pull and push is there. And this book has it in spades( I was fanning myself at times. )
And get me Started on how everytime he calls her ( babe, baby) I'm like " Yes SIR" .😩😩😩.
The side characters the hints and anticipation ,The dynamic of the 5 underground horsemen ( and the promise of their upcoming books, the hints thrown here and there and the endless possibilities. I'm sure Nash ( yes we are BFFs I nickname her.) She's going to deliver. I have high hopes. Like HIT ME " high hopes )

I highly recommend it because her writing style is IMMACULATE and FLAWLESS and what a way to get back to the publishing field. She's literally coming back with a book saying " I'm back Bit©hes better be prepared for me 🤭)

When I saw that Nashoda Rose was bringing us a new book, I immediately needed it. Her Tear Asunder series is one of my all time favs.

Five Second Rainbird is a slow burn romance. And the beginning for this story will have you instantly hooked with how the two main characters first meet. It's a bit of small town romance with an alpha mercenary broody hero which is like a beacon for this girl who absolutely loves those types of romances.

Give me the broody guy who is a bit possessive and protective every day of the week and Vic Gate our hero is that in spades. Macayla is smart, caring and determined and is perfect for Vic. This storyline is suspenseful, full of tension, emotional as we learn about both of their pasts. It's also a great introduction to this series and has me completely excited for the rest of the books and the stories of those known as the Underground Horsemen.

4.5 stars. First things first, this was fantastic and I loved having another Nashoda Rose book to read. Victor Gate, who has always been on the periphery of the other books and a bit of a mystery man is now the central focus of this story. I always wondered what kind of woman would bring out the heat from underneath his outer frost and Macayla North brings all of that to the surface. Like the other guys on the team, Vic has a past that has colored him and keeps him from developing any close connections. What he does for a living cannot be painted in any way to suggest he is a savior and Vic won't apologize for it. He is who he is and he's incredibly good at it. With his highly trained skills, he is used to waiting out the enemy, withstanding extreme conditions and running towards danger. What he is not accustomed to is feeling anything beyond a mild affection for anyone and will bury those sentiments so they cannot control his actions.

Macayla is trying to start over life on her own terms and with her own baggage, so while Vic is less than welcoming of her renting out his cabin, he is also vigilant and watchful over her. This rigid and damaged guy who speaks in brief phases and values his privacy isn't particularly friendly to anyone, given how he is always on edge and suspicious of everyone. What Macayla doesn't know is that she doesn't have to do anything specific to gain his attention, yet she has it regardless.

I loved watching Vic slowly let his walls down. Once he goes all in, he fully commits himself. Macayla may not be closed off like Vic, but she is undoubtedly strong in the way she handles herself and the situation around her. I liked how her softness offset Vic's hardness, but was exactly what he needed. Their chemistry was off the charts with a sweet and tender side, too. The action and suspense was page turning and keeping me on the edge of my seat with engaging side plots. There's an interesting motley crew of side characters introduced, hopefully to star in their own stories someday.

Sometimes you stumble across an author simply because something about one of their books catches your attention. For me, this was exactly what happen with this book, and now I am left wondering how in the world I have never discovered this author before and I am left really annoyed with myself because of it. This book totally blew me away! The writing is superb and the story telling captivating. Vic and Macayla are complex characters that sneak right into your heart and send your emotions into a whirlwind that leaves you breathless. To say that my heart ached, broke and soared again and again as I was reading this book just doesn't seem like an adequate description of what my poor heart was actually put through. The emotions are deep and raw and The Feels colossal as this author takes you on a journey that somehow manages to be heart meltingly sweet, terribly tragic, horrifyingly brutal, powerfully poignant and undeniably swoon worthy. I warn you; this is not always an easy book to read. There are things here that can be triggers for some readers and for others there are things that may just be out of your comfort zone. So, please make the best choice you can for you before deciding on reading. If these things are not concerning to you, I just can't recommend this book highly enough because it is one that I know I'll never forget. This is my candid review that I am posting of my own accord.

Nashoda Rose is one of my absolute favorite authors and I have read everything she has written. I've been waiting what seems like forever for more words from her and it has definitely been worth the wait.

Vic Gate and Macayla North. Those who have read any of Nashoda Rose's books knows there are so many layers. And they are intense. The characters reach down into your soul and take root.

I fell in love with this story within the first couple of pages and my love for these characters just continued to grow. Vic and Mac have each gone through their own kind of hell. Macayla is so strong. I don't want to give too much away but the love and devotion she has for her son, Jackson, is heart-wrenching, and the things she has gone through for him, GAH!!!!! And Vic, OMG!!! My heart just kept being torn from my chest with this guy.

Ok what did I just read?!
This was a new to me author and one I'll DEFINITELY be reading more from in the future, including going through her backlist.
From the first page till after the last I was HOOKED.
I seriously couldn't look away and loved every single second of it.
This book was not an easy read in parts, but loved how the harder subjects were handled with grace and dignity even while like the whole book, the descriptions made you feel like you were right there beside the characters who both were truly inspirational.
The only thing I would of loved more of was details of his job when he was away, but that's more the suspense junkie in me talking, as the book was already ginormous in the very best way and emotions were already going round on a rollercoaster with no safety bar.
Seriously this book had a bit of everything hence I couldn't put it down once starting, and why it EASILY went onto my top reads list.
Highly recommend and already eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

Nashoda Rose is back! I do not have the words to write a review that is worthy of Five Second Rainbird! Loved every second of it! Can not wait for more!
