He was doomed to perish at the exquisite lies of that damned mortal goddess, doomed to love her to the end of his days. A time would come when her face would fade from his memory if he found no way to capture it, but he would spend the rest of his life grasping for the feeling her smile elicited in him.

Forced to attend a ritual sacrifice on Samhain, Hades, a Prince of Faerie, instead claims the chosen victim as his own and spirits her away to his domain in the Underworld in order to save her life.

Her name is Persephone.

Unsure of her unconventional saviour's intentions, Persephone is initially reluctant to befriend him, and Hades is reluctant to draw her further into his dark world.

But as the feelings between them deepen, Hades finds himself torn between a vow he cannot break, a love that may soon break him.

Relive the romance and drama of "Thief of Spring" from Hades' POV. Although this can be read by itself, it is recommended that you read the original "Faeries of the Underworld" first.

Katherine Macdonald

Katherine "Kate" Macdonald writes the books she wishes she could have read more of as a teen—stories of fierce girls and gentle boys, of romance and adventure, and where the "three Cs" (chemistry, communication and consent) reign supreme. There may still be a little bit of miscommunication along the way as the characters grow as people, but she tries not to rely on that trope too much!

She loves books packed with witty banter, stories where you can feel the love growing between a pair, that include excellent, well-developed side-characters and a few subtly-foreshadowed twists and turns. She despises toxic relationships and tales that rely on old-fashioned notions of male and female stereotypes. She enjoys bending expectations and crafting worlds where sexism is a thing of the past. She considers herself an LGBTQIA+ friendly author, and her stories include a range of characters from within the community and absolutely no discrimination in sight.

She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from Lancaster University, and a PGCE in teaching English and Drama from the University of Exeter. She's been a writer since she was old enough to hold a crayon, but it was only after surviving a year of parenthood and a full-time job on less than six hours of sleep a night that she finally gained the courage to publish her debut novel, "The Rose and the Thorn." It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast inspired by a dream of a girl surrounded by snow in a field of flowers.

At her heart, Macdonald is storyteller, and it is her dream to inspire others in the way that she has been inspired.

She lives in Devon with her manic child and well-behaved cats.

Greek Mythology Retelling ✅
Faeries ✅
Hades POV ✅
Love Story ✅
Unique ✅

I received the Thief of Spring & Queen of NIght ( Faeries of the Underworld Duology) by Katherine Macdonald as a christmas gift and binge read it. When I saw that an arc was available for Hades POV, I couldn't help myself. I loved Persephone’s POV and I knew I would love Hades.

If you enjoy Heart of Hades then you should definitely read Persephone’s POV. The author’s ability to write a beautiful tortured boy’s love for Persephone just grips at the heart. I am a major mythology buff, especially Greek mythology and my favorites since I could remember are Hades & Persephone. To read a retelling told with a twist of Fae lore is so unique and exciting. I can’t help but be captivated all over again.

Prince of Faeries, Hades has to attend a ritual sacrifice on Samhain. When he sees the one who is chosen to be the sacrifice. Hades claims her for himself, taking her to the Underworld. But his decision he made was to save her life.

Now bought together; they begin to get closer and feelings deepen.
The way Hades doesn’t expect good things to happen to him, he is so sweet and broken ugh my heart.
Most people kept POVs to be the same story but i was happy to see despite the events being similar it's different at the same time. I can not wait to see if we get another POV for Hades.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

As an avid Hades and Persephone lover, I have read many adaptations that have stolen my heart. But I have never read an adaption like Heart of Hades by Katherine Macdonald. She has managed to take a well-known myth and breathe life into it that will have you aching for more. In a unique twist, Olympus and the Greek gods are not immortal deities but deeply intricate fae. Twisting established Greek lore with the complex fae lore, Macdonald introduces us to a completely new story whilst giving us the comfort of a favorite myth. Hades is charmingly vulnerable, acting his way through the traditions and demands of the faery courts. His love for Persephone is heartbreakingly tender and beautiful. Persephone is the perfect balance of sassy and headstrong with compassion and innocence. Macdonald weaves a rich world full of danger and wonder as she builds steadily to our lovers growing closer. I couldn’t put it down from the moment I started and I am eagerly waiting for the next installment in the series. This is a book that promises satisfaction for established Hades and Persephone fans as well as newcomers to the tale.

I knew reading from Hades’ perspective would tear my emotions to shreds in the best way—and I loved every moment of it. The original duology remains one of my favorites of this author’s works, and rereading them from his POV was quite the treat. I need the next one!

I loved Thief of Spring, so I was excited to get to read the story from Hades' perspective. If you're expecting dark and brooding and maybe mean, that's not Macdonald's Hades. He puts up a good front, but inside he is a boy who expects life to hand him bad things, because that's all it's done so far. He's loved Persephone from afar for years, even though she has no memory of him when she encounters him at the strange party she was invited to. He's horrified to see her there and acts to save her, even at the risk of making her hate him. He has to.

It's fascinating to see the story from the flip side. We got Persephone's point of view in Thief of Spring. (If you haven't read that, you absolutely should.) Now we get to see what Hades was thinking during all the events of the story. And it is so sweet to see their romance blossom, and see how nervous he really was about whether Persephone could actually love him, too. I just want to hug him, because he is so broken and so precious and so deserving of good things.

And I'll tell you what, the ending from Hades' perspective just about broke me. Oh, my heart.

Please tell me we're getting a Hades take on Queen of Night!

Thanks to Booksprout and the author for the advance review copy. All opinions here are mine, and I don't say nice things about books I don't actually like.

I read the first two of this series, so I knew going in that I would love this one as well and Macdonald did *not* disappoint! I absolutely adored seeing one of my favorite stories through Hades’ POV!

The writing was, as always, excellent and the characterization and romance shined! My only warning is to be prepared to love this sweet boy even more.

If you loved the first two books, don’t even hesitate to pick this one up as well!

Katherine Macdonald’s Heart of Hades is a wonderfully imaginative twist on one of my favorite Greek myths. It turns the situation on its head by incorporating Fae lore and making sure Hades is in no way the monster he often thinks he’s become. Chock-full of boy-falls-first pining, action, and intrigue, this book kept me captivated page after page.

Hades. Oh, sweet, tortured, broken, romantic Hades. I sincerely doubt anyone could read this book and not sympathize and root for him. He is a character bursting with emotion he fears showing, desperate for someone to care. He’s had horrible things happen to him, many by the hands of his own mother, and he fights for all he’s worth not to become like her or the other cruel members of his family. To do so, he focuses on the one bright spot he’s had since he was a young boy: Persephone. He cherishes her and wants nothing more than for her to be safe and happy. Any thought of being with her is nothing more than fantasy he can’t even fathom indulging because it hurts too much knowing it will never be … but then something happens to make it a possibility.

Persephone gets stuck in the underworld (not kidnapped, mind you, but trapped as a way to save her life, which is far more romantic). At first, she was a standoffish character, hard to know or relate to, but given her situation, it fit. Slowly, she bloomed into a sweet and sassy leading lady, who was no wallflower when danger was present. She was strong and feisty, every bit Hades’ equal, and I grew to really enjoy her as a character.

Put these two together and you get one amazing slow-burn romance in a fully developed and marvelous world. And the ending? Hold on to your hat! It’s a shocker of a cliffhanger that’s definitely going to make you scramble for the sequel when it comes out. Until then, Heart of Hades is a fantasy retelling sure to please any lover of Fae stories or Greek mythology.

Now that’s how you write an actual retelling. Everything about this book is so beautiful and balanced that you hardly find anything out of the order. Changing the conventional mythology and laying it down in the modern settings is a grand task and honestly Macdonald plays a brilliant role in shaping the settings plus the love-struck Hades is my favorite thing about the book.

Story seems inspired from not just the conventional Greek legends but ACOTAR as well because our characters have many things in common with Rhys and Freye. The first half of the book is quite beautiful with two timelines running forward. For the first time we are shown Hades’ side of the story & that’s a brilliant effort. Besides, the slow-burn romance of Hades and Persephone was to die for. I love the quotes of Hades and I truly think that if now I will elevate my standards further, Hades is to be blamed for that.

The only thing I didn’t like about the book is it’s repetitive element. Once Persephone stars understanding Hades, the romance takes a dangerously sharp turn as Hades keeps on playing the role of the lover boy to the extent that it starts becoming boring (though I am a sucker for romance but romance at an extent that it starts disturbing everyday affairs, ewww! A turn off). Plus, much of the length of this book could have been reduced. The ending however was nice and it would be exciting to find Hades in the Heart of Tartarus (though I believe that I won’t be reading the sequel anytime sooner but whenever I will it’s going to be an exciting ride).

I beta read this book for Kate and I absolutely LOVED it. A wonderful refreshing retelling of the Hades/Persephone myth. I love the take that the gods are Fae and that they are titles. This was such a fun read. It has amazingly sweet moments and moments that made me cry. Hades is an amazing character, so much fun to read. His love for Persephone is so sweet and made me fall in love with her. I cannot wait to read the second book and the Persephone point of view version of the books. If you like Hades and Persephone this is definitely a book to read.

I discovered Katherine's books with Thief of Spring, so I was pretty excited to read Hades' point of view, with Heart of Hades. And OH DEAR, this was SO satisfying. We already knew that Hades was cute and lovely, but he just gets even cuter and lovelier now. I also love the fact that we get to discover new details about the story through his point of view, which means that you have to read both Thief of Spring and Heart of Hades to have the whole picture. Reading Heart of Hades made me happy, it was like going back home after a tiring day. Thank you.

This was my first book I've read by Katherine and OMG it is thrilling!! I absolutely loved the different take on Hades and Persephone's story. It's told from Hades perspective and how he met Persephone and a fun twist on the kidnapping legend.
We all love a bad boy who is actually a good boy and falls first. The twists in the story make it that much more gripping. I'm going to go read the companion book Thief of Spring, and the sequel for that because I need to know more!

I became a huge fan of Katherine Macdonald’s writing by the end of “Thief of Spring,” and I loved her Persephone & Hades, a mortal girl and a fae ruler of the Underworld. This book gorgeously retells the story and gives it new depth. It’s a slow burn of a romance, but it’s time I don’t mind spending reading about the gradual unfolding of a beautiful love between two believable, fully realized characters. I fell in love with these characters, and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book, series, and author!

I freaking love having a POV of the other half ❤️

A while ago I received a short version of this book thinking oh a few scenes from the duology from Hades' POV, neat. Recently I got an email saying there is an Arc for this book, and I was like what's going on, but I still proceeded to get a copy because duh. Anyway, imagine my surprise when I opened the book and I see it is a book long and not some short novella. I screamed with delight, I was so happy.

I sarcastically want to congratulate myself to get why the first book was called Thief of Spring. Good one though Kate not gonna lie.

I feel like I'm going to repeat myself so ill keep short. Obviously I loved it as much as I did the duology. I love how much Hades simps Persephone. I mean I don't want to have a boyfriend if he is not like Hades. I love having dual POV but if it didn't happen I love having an entire book just with the POV of the male character. It just gives so much insight to the other side.

I have received an eArc from the author and I am leaving the review voluntarily.

This book is the flip side of the coin to Thief of Spring, which is told from Persephone's POV and this book is entirely from Hades's POV. Read that book first! Similar to the set of The Rose and the Thorn and Heart of Thorns, which are told from Rose and Thorn's POVs following the same story.

Here, we learn the inner thinking that Hades had going during Thief of Spring. He is hands down my favorite character that Katherine Macdonald has created so I was thrilled to hear his POV of his journey with Persephone. He is heartbreakingly broken, yet still has a beautiful heart that is vulnerable and caring. He's been hiding for so long, it's about time he finds something good to make his life worthwhile.

Lots of inner dialogue happening in this story, but it is welcome because I was dying to know what was going on in his head through the encounters with Sephy. Much of this book is them growing into a cautious and fragile friendship that soon grows beyond the bounds of what either could have hoped.

I enjoyed this story so much and look forward to the conclusion from Hades's viewpoint - which I really hope is coming as this book does end on a cliffhanger. Hoping for his version of Queen of Night!

I have to admit that this book took me a while to get into. That tends to happen with fantasy books that take the time to build the world you are reading about. There are a few others out there that are the exact same way for me. It was also a little confusing until you pick up on the fact that there are chapters that are from the past mixed in with the ones that are present day. I wish there had been indication that a chapter was past or present, but I eventually caught on when the new chapter would start.

That being said, this book (once it got there for me) was so good! I love that it is all from Hades POV. Let me tell you, this poor kid could have ended up the monster that many want you to think Hades is but he persevered. Granted that meant he kept to himself as much as he could believing himself to be the monster they feared. Was he? You’ll have to read it to find out what level of monster he might be.

I am so in love with the fact that Persephone is not a whimpering cowering character. At first she is aloof, but honestly who wouldn’t be given the situation she first found herself in? She then grows to care for Hades and with that caring, wants to learn how to be able to do several things so she doesn’t feel mortal and helpless. Sorry for being vague, I don’t want to give anything away. Watching her character grow into who she is at the end of the book is something I cheered for. She is so sure of herself and Hades that it makes my heart happy for him. Everyone deserves to feel cared for.

The other characters that come in to the story are also very well written. I love that fact that these are characters derived from the Greek Gods but are fae so they follow the fae rules you read about or have watched. They cannot tell a lie, which doesn’t mean they are not lying with their words by other means. If you get them to agree to something you need to be very careful in your wording. I LOVE that it is a hybrid of two of my favorite character types.

This book does end on a cliffhanger, in case that wasn’t obvious. Also, we can all agree that no matter what form of Zeus there is, they will always be a jerk.

I wasn’t sure how much I’d enjoy a book that’s a switched POV from another book but I loved reading about Hades’ backstory and seeing his perspective on events in Thief of Spring. For those that don’t know, Thief of Spring is the same story told from Persephone’s view and I’d recommend reading that before this. Heart of Hades never felt repetitive and just made me love the characters even more - and hate certain ones more!

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I used this book to bribe me to finish my spring cleaning, and what a reward it was.

I love fae and Greek mythology, so the fact that Katherine Macdonald combined them into this delicious literary treat was absolutely genius. The juxtaposition of faeries with the Greek pantheon was quite literally divine and executed with impeccable worldbuilding.

The character work was magnificent. I adored this take on Hades, a cruel exterior masking a kind interior, and I relished the respect between him and Persephone. In a world that so often forces boys to be unfeeling and tough, it was a breath of fresh air to find such a sensitive, sweet soul. HEART OF HADES is about the masks we wear, and what rewards lurk underneath. A five-star read that ensorcelled me on all levels.

Oh my. Where to even start. It starts out slow and jumps timelines repeatedly... That being said, this was fantastic in my opinion. Hades is a mix of bad and good and Persephone is strong and fragile. I was floored by the storyline and side characters. I enjoyed the mythology and can't wait to read the next. The ending threw me but just makes me want the next all the more.

DISCLAIMER: I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS!!! (it won't let me give that half star).

Not your typical Hades and Persephone retelling, that is for sure!

Because of how Katherine Macdonald tells this classic love story, it's the perfect series to read if you're wanting to get started into Greek retellings, or even if you've been interested in the Hades and Persephone story, but didn't know when to begin? This is the series to start out with! The way she portrayed their love is soft and romantic, and while it's still a little cheesy to read; however, the cheese just adds to the charm of this little series in my opinion. Both for Thief of Spring and Heart of Hades.

I read the Thief of Spring right before reading this one, to see how similar they were and if there were any plot holes or if the story was just a carbon copy of the female pov, with just pronouns changed. I am happy to say that it isn't! While the chapters overlap quite a bit, there are still differences in Hades' point of view that keeps you wanting to read more, and his love for Persephone is so pure and genuine.

I loved how we got to know more about Hades and his past, and how he grew up. Those chapters where it was going back to his memories were some of my favourites because you really got to see how he became who he was and I absolutely loved them and ate those up!

The ONLY reason I didn't give this a five star is because the stories aren't written in the same POV. Thief of Spring is written from Persephones, first-person point of view whereas Heart of Hades is written from his, third person, point of view. While we still heard his thoughts and felt his feelings, it was more of a minor pet peeve of mine that they weren't written in the same p.o.v. style, but this is just my opinion and really the only reason why I give it a four and a half star rating.

I can't wait until part two comes out!

I read the Persephone books within one weekend a while ago and have been patiently waiting for Hades side. I am blown away! I thought I felt things reading Sephy's side, I had to actually stop reading at certain points because I felt my heart was going to explode into a million little pieces reading this. To say I am anxious for the rest would be an understatement. Seeing into Hades head while these milestones in their relationship is happening is a godsend!

I would highly recommend this book and the Persephone ones to just about anybody at this point. These are well written, very detailed, and all around a good story. .

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹: If you’re looking for a sweet, heart-wrenching YA Fae-retelling of Hades & Persephone with lots of pining and the male POV, you won’t want to sit this out. A cute & welcome change from all the heady H&P retellings, and a true gem.

𝗜𝗻-𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹: I hold Kate’s 𝔽𝕒𝕚𝕣𝕚𝕖𝕤 𝕠𝕗 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕌𝕟𝕕𝕖𝕣𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕 series very dear, and when she told me she was working on companion novels, I was beyond gleeful. Kate has–again–crafted an enchanting story with emotional depth that gives insights into Hades’ past & the first few months spend with Persephone. Albeit being a companion novel, the book is a marvelous standalone–standing proud on its own–that does not have to cower in the shadow of 𝕋𝕙𝕚𝕖𝕗 𝕠𝕗 𝕊𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘 and ℚ𝕦𝕖𝕖𝕟 𝕠𝕗 ℕ𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥. However, when knowing Persephone’s books, it might feel repetitive in regards to the flashbacks. Still, Kate managed to sneak in new scenes so that you still find new things. The books also has LOTS of pining! I love that but if you’re not one for pining boy-falls-first MMCs, then don’t pick this up. If you’re unsure, give it a try but if you get itchy just thinking about it, leave it be. It won’t be your jam.

Other than that, I simply love to read books through the male lens & I think Kate has done a marvelous job with this one. I also absolutely adored the transition of both MCs feelings, from Hades’ realization of his love to Perse falling in love with him. This happens so slowly, so naturally, that by the end I was like "wow, I can’t believe they used to feel like strangers to each other". That transition is beautiful & enrapturing in its execution.

To summarize: Even when knowing the existing 𝔽𝕠𝕥𝕌𝕎 books, this one is definitely worth its time.

After reading the original version of this book, Thief of Spring, I was excited to hear that the author was making a version from Hades point of view and WOW did it deliver.

This story was made to be told from his side. Everything was so much more poignant coming from him and seeing how much he loved Persephone from day one was so heartwarming/heartbreaking.

Macdonald’s beautiful prose and skill in writing soft tortured boys makes this an incredible story that I didn’t want to end.

Heart of Hades by Katherine Macdonald is nothing short of a masterpiece, weaving mythology with such passion and depth that it feels almost tangible. From the very first chapter, I was drawn into Macdonald's beautifully crafted world, where the shadows of the Underworld are alive with intrigue and unexpected warmth.

But it was Hades who truly stole my heart. I've read countless retellings of the God of the Underworld, but none have captured his essence quite like this. Macdonald's depiction is powerful yet tender, a perfect balance of strength and vulnerability that makes him feel not only real but incredibly magnetic. His presence commands respect, yet his moments of quiet introspection reveal a soul that is far more complex than mere myth would suggest. It’s a version of Hades that redefines him—not as a distant ruler shrouded in darkness, but as a man capable of profound love and sacrifice.

The relationship between Hades and Persephone is nothing short of spellbinding. There’s a slow-burning intensity in their connection that’s beautifully paced, unfolding with each page in a way that feels both fated and entirely organic. Their bond transcends the typical archetypes of Greek mythology, painted instead with shades of trust, respect, and undeniable passion. Every interaction is charged with emotion, pulling me deeper into their story and making me root for their love against all odds. I found myself lingering on their conversations, re-reading moments just to savor the emotions captured in Macdonald's words.

What makes this rendition so special is the way Macdonald breathes life into the Underworld itself. It’s not just a place of shadows and despair—it’s vibrant, pulsating with magic and hidden beauty that mirrors the complexity of its ruler. Through Hades’ eyes, the Underworld becomes more than just his domain; it’s his sanctuary, his legacy, and the place where his heart truly resides. I was mesmerized by the descriptions of the obsidian halls and the way light flickered across the river Styx, a testament to Macdonald's gift for vivid storytelling.

I can confidently say that this depiction of Hades is my new favorite. Katherine Macdonald has crafted a version of the character that I didn’t just read about—I experienced him. Heart of Hades isn’t just a retelling; it’s a reimagining that will stay with me long after the final page. If you’re looking for a story that redefines myth and makes you fall in love with the shadows, this is it. I’m already longing to revisit its pages, to once again walk through the Underworld alongside its most captivating ruler.

This is a wonderful and imaginative retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth. Changing the Gods to fae and gives the story a new dimension and allows for the characters to be more vulnerable and approachable.
Over time Hades has become an often maligned and misinterpreted character, which is rectified in this portrayal of him as a tender and sensitive boy, grown into a kind hearted and good (fae) man. He hides behind a cruel reputation and fakes his way through the fae courts. Until he has to take Persephone, with whom he fell in love with as a boy, to the Underworld to protect her from being sacrificed. Her presence brings him out of his protective shell and seeing him for who he is Persephone grows to love him. Together they overcome odds and they fight for each other and the Underworld.

The story telling is rich and vibrant, full of drama, romance and some fighting action and taking place in a magical, well crafted world.
All the characters in this book are well rounded and believable and very relatable.

I really have to read the other books in this series and eagerly await the next instalment.

Absolutely loved returning to this world to re-experience the story from a new perspective. It was so much fun to see things from Hades' perspective.

A lot of this is (understandably) very similar if not identical to Thief of Spring. Even with the new perspective, I don't think I would have enjoyed this as much if I had read it immediately after Thief of Spring. I read this a few months after finishing the original duology, and that was perfect timing.

Definitely recommend this if you enjoyed Thief of Spring! I'm very excited to read part 2!

I really enjoyed this alternative retelling of the story of Hades and Persephone. I have read several retellings from Persephone's POV, but this was the first one I've read from Hades POV. That made it unique and entertaining for me. I loved the heartfelt emotion, and also the Fae aspect of the story. I have not read 'Thief of Spring', so I cannot say how this book compares to that one, but I found this one compelling on its own.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ahhhhhh! The HURT. the FEELS. the LOVE! Love this book!!!!

Hades POV is 100x better than Sephy’s, and I loved hers. Hades inner emotions are deep and poignant. Trust me — *YOU WILL FEEL THE FEELS.* You’ll just want to scoop him up and shield him from the world.

His complexity and multi-layered personality really shine here, a testament to MacDonald’s work of character creation.

But most importantly, his love for Persephone is beautifully multi-faceted and his thoughts and reactions are lovely to behold from his POV! 🥰❤️

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!

The author was so gracious to let me be a beta-reader for this before publication. I have not read any of her books before and went in not knowing anything about her take of the Persephone/Hades tale.

I loved the world she built for them, the politics and class structure, the interpersonal relationships between characters, the twists and turns that I did NOT see coming!

I’m already impatiently waiting for the sequel and she hasn’t even started on it yet!!!
