Tales from Verania #5

The Damning Stone

Rate this book
A year has passed since the Dark Wizard Myrin attempted to take control of the Kingdom of Verania. Though the scars of the final battle remain, Veranians have come together in unity in order to rebuild. Good King Anthony sits on the throne once more, with Morgan of Shadows at his side.

However, a king is not immortal. One day, Anthony will step down, paving the way for his son, Grand Prince Justin, to assume the throne.

And Justin wants anything but.

Unfortunately for him, he finds himself with bigger things to worry about than just becoming the ruler of a country. At the celebration of the might of Verania and its people, a delegation arrives, led by a man who calls himself a magician. This man represents the King of Yennbridge, who has come to claim what was promised to him years before: the hand of the firstborn son of the King and Queen of Verania.

With his ridiculous friends at his side—Sam, Ryan, Kevin, Gary and Tiggy—Justin sets out to make the visiting king’s life a living hell. Which, of course, backfires spectacularly, and when the dust settles, Justin finds his friends changed in ways he can’t expect, leaving him standing alone.

Except he’s not as alone as he thinks, given the King of Yennbridge will do anything to prove he’s worthy of the frozen heart of the Ice Prince.

Prince Justin has finally met his match.

Let the games begin.

Ahhh, nostalgia for some of My Favorite Characters Everdy-Ever, capitalized, because it's true. 😁

Also, HOLY SHIT, it's been 7 years since we first met Sam of Wilds and his crew of misfit crazies??? 😮

I absolutely loved being back in Verania again, this time to see Prince Justin paired with a neighboring King, who reminded me a helluva lot of Josy from TJ's "How to Be a Movie Star (How to Be #2)".

The main drama in this story arose from the consequences of Sam's nightmares of not only what had happened while fighting Mirin, but also what *almost* happened. Of what he feared he was capable of unleashing.

But yeah, as soon as I read what the Damning Stone's purpose was, I was internally screaming, "Are you fuckers insane? Do NOT do this! This can go nowhere good!" Which, of course, it didn't.

My favorite parts of the book were when a certain vegetable was reintroduced again and how Sam, Ryan, Gary, Kevin, and Tiggy were all for the vast majority of the story. Getting to see that? It was all I'd hoped for and more. *chefs-kiss*

And the scene where Justin took Dylan to work out with the Knights. "One of Mama's boys..." I was dying. Literally. 🤣

As for the romance, while I enjoyed seeing Justin and Dylan's relationship grow, this still felt more like a love story between Justin and Same, although a platonic one. Those parts were where I was really hit with the feels.

I can't wait to see where this story goes, as the last page of the book alludes to another story, YAY!

I'd rate this one at around 4.5 stars and I'm thrilled that there's at least one more Verania story remaining.

This was my most anticipated book ever? Like, ever since TJ Klune mentioned a few years ago that Justin would be getting his own book and we would get to see him getting his own HEA. I tried to read this book, but I keep picking it up and putting it back down because I keep getting angry. I have never been more disappointed in a book. I'm calling time of death, or rather a DNF, on this book at 40%. I already heard what happens at the end and quite frankly...I've seen enough.

You may ask why I'm posting a review for a book I didn't even finish, and I feel like I should explain WHY I'm not finishing it, and why I'm basically giving up on any new books from TJ. I was a huge fan for what feels like forever, but there's just better books out there. And I think we should all be glad I didn't finish it, because at only having read 40% this post is already over 2500 words.

If you loved this book, skip this review because you're probably not going to love what I have to say.

Content notes for what I've read so far include mentions of a mother dying from giving birth to a baby and a character having a heart attack scare.

***SPOILERS BELOW***

I'm just really over this book and over this series. I'm over TJ and the new books he's putting out. Yes, the backlist books have their own problems, but the new books just feel like a mess. The only NEW book that's not in a series that's been announced is In the Lives of Puppets and it's been comped with Swiss Family Robinson, Wall-E, and Pinocchio which is a surprising trifecta of things I don't like. So, this is farewell to the author. The backlist will still be there for me to re-read and enjoy, but this is the end of the road. I wish you all the best.

I feel like I’ve waited an age for Justin’s book… but every second of his story was worth any whiny impatience and petulant groaning that may have (definitely did) occur on my part.

It felt so damn good to be back in Verania, in Castle Lockes, surrounded by all the eccentric and adorable characters we’ve grown to love. This may be a deviation from the rest of the series, now through the eyes of Prince Justin instead of Sam, but the rest of the cast were ever-present and just as wonderfully outrageous in their banter and antics as usual.

Although I’d been desperate for Justin to get his own story and find his own true love, I’ll admit I was nervous about how that would play out. Naturally, my worries were for nought, because, as always, in Klune’s capable and talented hands, Justin got the amazing, heartwarming story he deserved.

And his love interest, King Dylan!? He couldn’t have been more perfect! Not only as a romantic match for Justin, but also a perfect addition to this group of characters, who all bounce off one another effortlessly, with wit and snark, and so much “found family” love that it sets a high bar in that particular arena of storytelling.

Predictably, I spent the entire read laughing my ass off and highlighting amusing (and emotional) passages like a fiend. I don’t think I ever highlight as much as I do when reading a Klune story. The humour and the heart of the matter is always so on point for me, it’s freaky, like he's been inside my head and crafted a story that is everything I want and need to be happy and satisfied.

As usual, I also bought the Michael Lesley audiobook seconds after the book was downloaded. The vocal performance of this series remains stellar in all ways, even if I only partially listened this first time, because I was busy with all that said highlighting.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t make note of just how much I was moved by the way this story finally brought Justin and Sam’s once-tenuous relationship to the very forefront of all things, acknowledging their hard-earned friendship, and making them the Best Friends 5eva that Sam so desperately longed for. Their scenes were spectacular, both hilarious in their banter and snappy dynamic, but also deeply moving as they finally admit the depths of their special bond and brotherhood. It was a long-time coming and I LOVE how this relationship has played out from the beginning of the series until now.

To conclude, I pretty much loved everything about this. I laughed, I cried, I laughed some more. It truly was everything I wanted an additional Verania story to be. Needless to say, it’s an instant favourite.

I truly hope this isn’t the last we see of these characters, because their’s will forever be a world and a story I’ll never tire of. ❤️

Relisten #5
truth corn for the win!

Relisten #4
Bro... this was so awesome

Relisten #3

Because why not.
Sam and Justin were the highlight of this book for me.
............................
Relisten #2

Yeah Yeah I relistened mere weeks later. Don't judge me. It's THAT good.
..............................
Well... I finished.

And the book hangover that I can feel coming on is pretty much inevitable and incurable at this point.

Let's start with Justin:

I have always always loved Justin. Even when he was the biggest douchebag in TLSH, I could see that he was nuanced and lonely and afraid.
And then as the series progressed, so did Justin. He transformed into a character that you can't help but root for.
In his book, I was utterly charmed by him. He was sweet, and funny and sassy and vulnrable and just plain perfect.
His relationship with his Dad was heartwarming, his relationship with his himbo love interest was fun and sexy...but it was his relationship with Sam that, for me, was the highlight of this book.
After eveything they went through, their friendship 5eva comes to fruition here, and it's Justin who is the strong one, who protects Sam and who shows his metal. And let me tell you, it is their scenes that made me cry. They were super emotional, sad at times and happy in others...amd they were in a word: Perfect.

The Himbo: I won't reveal his name because #reasons.
Let's just say, that he is the himboest himbo to have ever himboed. Like Bro! He's in a frat and everything. He's also pierced....EVERYWHERE. and did I mention that he also has a soft belly? Because of course he does.
Justin sees him and is swept away on the spot... he did fight it of course, but the himbo had a trick or two up his sleeve.

The Surprises:
We have multiple surprises in this book: the villian, parts of the arranged marriage plot, some new relationships and more. Never a dull moment. Finishing a 18 hour audio in 2 days isn't easy... so that should show you how I struggled to stop listening
It was that good.

The Humor:
I used to think that TLSH was TJ's Funniest book... well The Damning Stone kinda took the crown here. Because #DAMN.
From the gang's usual antics to the himbo's himbo-ness to the truth corn... yup. You heard that right. There is TRUTH CORN and JUSTIN EATS IT. To say that I nearly peed my pants, multiple times, is an understatement.

The Ending:
I was worried about that. I was worried that I would feel bereft, or that it would feel rushed or incomplete. But as usual, TJ came through. This is NOT the last we've heard from Verania. WE GET MORE BOOKS WOOOHOOO.

The Narration:
Micheal Lesley simply owns this audio. I heard him narrate the first lines of this book and I smiled so big and got misty eyed. Simply amazing.

Honorable Mentions:
Ryan and the himbo being bros. Because of course they are.
The thing... at the place, where everyone turns into stuff. Yeah you'll know what I'm talking about when you reach it.

I really can't say anymore because it would be spoilery. So I'll stop here.

In a word: This book was simply PEREFCT.

I admit that Prince Justin isn’t my favorite character in the Verania universe, but I also understood where his disdain for Sam came from and that jealousy did spur him to do some very not so nice things. However, by the end of A Wish Upon the Stars, we do get to see another side of Justin and how he’s accepted Sam and adjusted to his very uniquely special shenanigans.

Here in this follow up and told in Justin’s point of view, he admits his mistakes, he explains why he did the things he did, and one sees that he’s come to rely upon and love Sam very much as they prepare for a future to rule Verania together. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would and discovered that Justin is like my kindred spirit. His snark, his every irritated reaction to Gary/Tiggy/Kevin’s outrageous antics and Sam/Ryan’s sappy silliness was so in alignment with my own misanthropic grumpy heart that I couldn’t help but fall for Justin and his poor exasperated self.

This is a very compact story focused on Justin and company when they discover the king made a long forgotten pact with a foreign land to marry their offspring together. A magically binding courtship must be invoked, and one can only imagine the hugely entertaining chaos that ensues.

Just know that King Dylan is the absolute complete opposite to Justin but somehow his slightly dim, but such a good and pure heart persona, wins Justin over and makes him a better person. I have no doubt the reader will have fun reading about Justin fighting the slow dismantling of his icy defenses bit by painful bit.

Overall, of course this was a fun and wild ride interspersed with plenty of sniffle inducing feels as all Verania tales are. Klune leaves the ending open for more, and as always, I’ll be here for it should he deliver!

There was good and bad. I loved seeing Ryan and Sam again, along with the rest of the crew. But even though Justin gets a bit of a personality transplant (finally!) in this book, it wasn't enough to make me like him yet. And I definitely didn't think it was enough to make me understand what Dylan sees in him.

And this story is unfinished. There is more to come, which I wish I would've known about ahead of time. Even the love story is very early.

So maybe it'll evolve and give me more character development and relationship building. We'll see.

“Yawn,” Gary said. “Been there, done that, and read the overblown, self-serious sequels. Stop trying to make this about the pair of you. Four times was enough. Even I’m fine with taking on a reduced role.”

Lol. Sorry Gary, but I don’t think you and I read the same book.

I can’t begin to explain how much I was anticipating Justin’s book, The Damning Stone. It was without a doubt my most anticipated 2022 release. So, imagine my surprise to find not a story about a cold-hearted prince slowly falling for a sweet himbo King, but actually another 450 pages worth mess in which every single character in this entire book series fawns and basically has a circle jerk over Sam, the protagonist of the first four books, instead. Yeah, I was livid.

Let me be clear : this is NOT Justin’s book. This is 100% Sam’s book, narrated by Justin. And even then, barely, as there were large swaths of paragraphs where Justin doesn’t speak, nor does he have a single individual thought about what’s happening right in front of him – he’s simply narrating what other characters are doing.

I was discussing this book as I was reading it with a friend of mine, and as I was explained my many issues with it, they brought up an interesting point that I hadn’t thought about before, but in hindsight is accurate: TJ Klune doesn’t know how to write characters that aren’t like himself. Every main character he’s written – Sam, Gus, Bear, Nick, Paul, and many more – are all variations of the same character. Sure, some are quieter than others, some more overt, some more sexual – but generally they’re the same flavour of character in a different book setting. I actually consider this quite poor writing on his part considering he writes books from all types of genres – contemporary, fantasy, superheroes, paranormal, sci-fi – and yet he writes the same main character over and over and over again. If you’re a fan of his books, you will completely understand where I’m coming from.

And then comes Justin, a character he probably never expected to write a whole book about, let alone make the protagonist. And he can’t do it – so he reverts to what he knows best: writing about himself, about the same familiar character again and again and again – writing about Sam.

You may be asking why I’m so confident in making this claim, why I’m stating that Justin isn’t even a main character in his own fucking novel, and why this book is about Sam instead. Well, before explaining the meat of this story, let me just get this part out that has pissed me off since reading this book three weeks ago: Justin and his love interest, King Dylan, are alone only twice in the ENTIRE NOVEL. They’re alone when they meet on page 62 and then again when they have sex on page 473. Oh, and I forgot to mention, they’re tied together by a magical sash for this entire time and have to sleep in the same bed. And yet somehow, they’re only alone for literally TWO TIMES??

Let me start breaking down the plot of this stupid book for you.

There are MASSIVE spoilers from here on out. I spoil everything. So don't say I didn't warn you.

So that’s The Damning Stone. I think I conveyed a big portion of the reason I hated this book so much. And honestly, I’m starting to really dislike the author too.

There has been a lot of discussion about TJ Klune over social media for a while, and honestly, I’ve tried to stay away from it because I was a big fan of his, but I can’t ignore it any longer. He has many issues in his books – from straight up using a slur to Romani people in his Verania series as a name for an entire culture, from his inspiration for The House in the Cerulean Sea being residential schools, from the entire mess that is his contemporary series. But rather than acknowledge any of this, he says he’s taking a ‘break’ from social media and his fans rabidly go after anyone who even mildly criticises him. Right. So disappointing.

Personally, I’m no longer going to read TJ Klune’s books anymore, and that really breaks my heart as some of my favourite books, and characters, have come from him. I’m just over everything about him and his writing. I’ll still have a fondness for his books I love though, but going forward, I’m not going to read his newer stuff. This book is just the final nail in the coffin.

I absolutely loved reading from Justin’s POV. He is a magnificent character, that brings so much to this series, to Verania. I loved getting to see the ‘Ice Prince’ thaw. Getting to see him understand it’s okay to love, and be loved. For him to have revelations about how much the people in his life truly mean to him. This isn’t just a ‘love’ story for Justin and Dylan. No. This is also a love story for Justin and Sam. Two very different kinds of love, but absolute love.

”I’m here. … I won’t ever leave you.”

I was unprepared for what happened with The Damning Stone. That was not was I expecting at all, but by golly it was epic, bro. I love what happened to the crew, because bringing that purity, innocence and adorableness is exactly what Justin needed in his life. So freaking pure how that bond was, even when there was no memory of it. I don’t want to say more than that, because no one spoiled it for me and I’m not going to spoil it for anyone else. But truly, the friendship part of this story…I can’t stop thinking about it. Friendship played such a huge part of this, and it was beautiful.
Then there was also Dylan. The himbo. 😆 I was unsure what I thought of him at first, but he grew on me the same way he grew on Justin. He was hard not to love. He is absolutely Justin’s match in all things. Dylan was perfectly written for our Prince of Verania.

Overall, I honestly can just say I had a huge smile on my face throughout this entire read. Not even just because of funny parts, but because it was truly a comfort read. Even in the always destined villain parts, I smiled because our group did it together. Just how perfect is that.

03/12/22: Just saw the cover and blurb are now available. I was way off on my hopes, but I’m still beyond excited. Sounds like it’s going to be sooooo good. 🔮

08/24/2021: Kind of hoping Justin ends up with Moishe. Probably a far out idea, but it just kept sticking with me. Moishe’s backstory was never revealed, but it was constantly brought up - his Elven roots - and I feel that was for a reason. Sam’s story ended with it being said the first born of Verania was arranged to marry a prince of a faraway land. Couldn’t that be an Elven prince? Maybe one that ran away? Idk probably crazy thinking but I’m here for it. Whomever Justin ends up with, excited to see it happen.

TJ Klune has never let me down, so I'm so incredibly sad that I just did not like this book.

I love this series so much, so I was super excited for Prince Justin's book. Excited for him to have someone and see his heart thaw a bit. I guess we got that, but somehow Prince Justin's book is still all about Sam. It seems like all anyone, including Justin, can talk about is how important Sam is and how much they love Sam and LISTEN. I also love Sam. He's great. But this wasn't supposed to be his book, and I feel like he still somehow became the most important person.

It's still Verania and it's still funny and heartfelt, but it just wasn't the same. Some other reasons this book just rubbed me the wrong way that are full of spoilers:

The book wasn't BAD, okay. It was very on-brand with Verania and all the crassness and obnoxiousness that entails. I'm just wondering why it feels so different from the rest of the series. As I said, I've never read a Klune book I didn't absolutely love, so I'm probably taking this too personally. I'll continue reading for sure, just hoping for better in the future.

[4.6] writing from the afterlife for my soul has fled its corporeal vessel.

cause of death: asphyxiation by laughter. it was a good run 😔✊🏼

another delightful hit in this charming series with hints of more to come, and i am absolutely here for it!

i thoroughly enjoyed Justin's redemption arc, the rocky landscape of his relationship with the himbo king Dylan, how said himbo and Ryan ended up being bros, but what took the spotlight for me *by far* was Sam and Justin's Best Friend 5eva bond. unmatched platonic goodness i can consume on the daily with my vitamins.

I am a huge fan of T.J. Klune.

I loved the Tales of Verania every since I read the first book, to me this is one of Klune's more dirtier and graphics books.

We met Justin in the very first book and while he was not the most likeable character, he grew on you as the series progressed and I for one was happy to get a chance to read his story.

The was more Justin's story than anything else. We got to witness how hard he tried to keep himself distant from Sam and his reasons for doing so, and then we got to witness his acknowledgement of Sam being his best friend, his brother.

I found myself laughing out loud at many parts of this and I think this was done perfectly, allowing Justin to stand on his own and find himself.

The romance between Dylan and Justin was just so/so but the friendship between Sam and Justin was everything.

I wasn't shocked about Lady Tina, in fact, I would have been annoyed if it was written a different way. I never liked her.

I thought this would be the last of the series but apparently, the saga will continue.

“Once I was king, I was going to fire them all. And by fire, I meant directly into the sun.”

I’m not even surprised that this turned out to be my favorite in the series. Justin’s character always intrigued me and I APPLAUD (👏)tj’s ability to crack open and slowly unravel Justin’s character in a series of 5 books until finally he blossoms into the most beautiful human EVER.

“Sam, of course, asked, “What happens when Justin has to take a shit?”
I closed my eyes and breathed in through my nose, out through my mouth.
“Oh,” Sam said. “Sorry. That was vulgar, especially in such esteemed company. I’ll rephrase: what happens when Justin has to evacuate his bowels?”
My eyes snapped open. “How in the hell was that any better?”

I am so sad that there are no more books in this series ( for now ). I knew I would feel sad but I never expected to feel THIS disappointed that there’s no more for me to read. This wonderful family that tj created and perfected soothed me so well. Made me laugh so hard. Made me cry for them. It was insanity 😭😭😭

“And I hope you’re ready because I’m going to donut all over your entire face—”
“Nope!” Ryan said. “Nope, nope, nope. Not today. Not again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twelve times, shame on me.”

I honestly dropped my expectations after the little twist that happened in the beginning of the book surrounding Sam,Ryan, tiggy and Gary. But. I’m so so happy that it turned out to be the MOST ADORABLE THING EVER. I SWEAR KIDS SAY THE FUNNIEST THINGS.

“I love them,” Ryan said.
“I know.”
“They make me want to punch a wall.”

And Justin and Dylan??? match made in heaven. because daaamnnn. who knew I was into himbo??. sweeter than a peach babies. Smash. All of them💗

“I told you once that we’re not bound by fate, or have a destiny written in the stars. But that—”

“But that doesn’t always have to be important,” I finished for him, the memory of his words like a shooting star. “We could try this because we choose to, and that’s all you could ever want.”

“It is,” he agreed. “And I want to try. With you.”

I’m so content right now. I’m good. I’m happy. ✨🍀

I absolutely loved this.

I was so glad this seemed to be a little less heavy than the previous 3 books. It’s why the first book shall always be my favorite.

I’ve wondered who would be a good fit for Justin ever since I read the first book years ago. And I have to admit that TJ chose wisely. Dylan was absolutely perfect in his weirdness. He fit right in!

I’ve always liked Justin, even when he was being mean (although I do have a hard time forgiving him for how cruel he was to Sam on top of the tower in TLSH), so I was pretty psyched for this book. Luckily Justin was who I hoped he would be.

And what happened with Sam, Ryan, Tiggy, Gary and Kevin was just what this book needed. I loved those scenes and it made it feel that much lighter.

I do have to admit that I wasn’t too sure about everything that happened in the last 25%. I guess I wanted something just a bit more? I think I wanted something more showy than what we got? So I’m going with 4.5 stars, instead of 5.

Oh man, what a ride.

Things I absolutely loved:
FAT HIMBO KING. I will riot if I see any fanart in which Dylan isn't the fat king that he is. He's constantly described as having a big sloping belly and thick thighs and being broad, and we are living for it.

Justin and Sam 5eva. Seeing Justin accept and learn that he loves Sam and values his friendship was definitely a highlight. I loved it so much.

The young ones: if you know you know. So fucking cute.

The spicy scene. Top tier 🔥 and that's coming from a sex repulsed asexual 😂

Morgan and the King.

Justin's emotional vulnerability.

What I didn't love:
The villain. I mean really? I get it but also feels a bit problematic to me. (Will elaborate below after spoiler line)

The modern language. I mean did TJ forget what time period verania is set in? The overuse of the term "bro" threw me off but also additions of modern terms and phrases like himbo, frat bros, kegs etc. It clashed with the world he set up before and was jarring.

Give me more Justin and Dylan get to know you! For fuck's sake they are literally tied together, you'd think we would have more of their getting to know you.

Maybe it's because I've been waiting for this for so long but I'm a little underwhelmed. I'm a bit disappointed with who the villain turned out to be and I just wanted a bit more.

SPOILERS
SPOILERS
SPOILERS!!!!!

LAST CHANCE.

OKAY FOR REAL NOW.

LADY TINA. seriously? I mean yeah she fucking sucks but out of the 5 women characters, 1 is Sam's mom, 2 are lesbian dragons, and 2 are evil. I just expected better. Having lady tiny be the villain almost felt misogynistic and is super frustrating. I'm gonna need dude authors to stop hating on women okay? Cool.

I do think TJ managed to address a few of the problematic moments from past books in this one, especially the horse racism and the use of the term g*psy. He also finally made a fat character without also being fatphobic, so yay (also I love Dylan)

I did love that Dylan was so universally loved and admired. I mean here is an obviously fat character yet EVERYONE thinks he's attractive. It was amazing and so refreshing.

Fantastic read & listen! 🎧📚🦄🧙

I will admit I was a little bit worried that a story coming from Justin's POV wouldn't carry the same impact, humor, and gravity of the previous books in the series from Sam's POV. I don't know why I worried! TJ Klune has done it again.

There's humor, there's action, there's sexy times, and there are a lot of emotional moments - including the comeuppance I have been waiting years to read.

I loved this so much! I loved the story, and I loved the narration by Michael Lesley, who once again brilliantly entertains with fantastic character voices, a tiny sprinkle of voice fx, and giving us all a enjoyable performance that makes listening feel like a theater experience.

Absolutely recommended! (But I would suggest reading/listening to the series in order.)

This review contains foul language and spoilers, plus a not kind review. Don't read if you want none of that. My review, I can say what I want, you don't have to read it.

*gasp* He has a surname!

When the King from Yennbridge visits Verania chaos ensues. Justin is tied to a situation that doesn't allow him to escape the King. But spending time with the visiting King may prove the Ice Prince is capable of melting.

I was just really glad to be back in Verania. Although some of our favorites were not as we usually see them the heart of who the group is was always there. Learning more of Justin and what's behind the walls he put up was awesome. So happy for him and I so hope there is more. For as long as TJ writes about these characters I will keep coming back.

However I Did Not Appreciate That Ending! (Capitalized so you know it's true)Lol

Michael Lesley is one of the best narrator's out there. He brings life to my favorite characters. I will say at the beginning of the story his voices were off for Morgan and King Anthony even a bit with Sam. Not by much but still off enough to bother me a bit 😆. They were back to normal as the story went along which was great. Also, I have to say I really didn't like the voice he chose for Dylan. I was expecting more of a dude/bro/frat boy voice. That was not the case here. I actually liked the voice I had for him in my head better 🤷🏽‍♀️ Still great narration.

As to the story, it was good. I did want more Justin and Dylan. It did feel like Justin had his walls up throughout most of it so the relationship did not feel truly developed. I kind of think they focused more on him and Sam and what their relationship was. It kind of made me think what could of been between those two lol. But Knight Delicious face is Sam's one and only. Speaking of Knights, TJ really should write shorts about their adventures/antics. I would totally 100% be here for it lol

I look forward to more of this group in the future. I love them too much for it to stop lol.

2/24 re-listen #4

Who woulda thought a platonic love story would remain one of my favorite books of all time. I’ll never tire of this audio series.

3/23 re-listen #2

Yes I pretty much started this series over as soon as I finished it. If anything I’m even more attached. This book is less of a love story between lovers, and more of a love story between best friends and I adore it so. The journey to get Justin to the place he is in this book is truly beautiful storytelling. I just need TJ to keep writing Verania forever. My number one most favorite audio series ever.

————————————————-

Big ole spoilers so please don’t read ahead if you don’t want them.

First of all, how dare TJ make a world so amazing I feel bizarrely attached?! Like… Bro..

First of all, the evolution of Dylan and Justin was wonderful. But my favorite part was the feels between Sam and Justin. This is a REAL full circle with them over 5 books. Ugh. So so good.

ALSO.

I FUCKIN’ KNEW LADY TINA WAS A SNAKE IN THE GRASS. I KNEW IT. TEAM SAM FIVE EVA.

My life has no meaning without this series. I am lost at sea. 😭

I completely forgot I read this book, bro. That's not to say it wasn't memorable, this whole series certainly.. stands out, but it just wasn't a good or fun read. Bro. None of this series has been, really, brah. The highlight, as always, are the lovelies I read it with, bros the both of them.

Looks like there's more on the way, brostephs and bromandas! We must brace, broyo.

(can you tell which word got overused in this book? bet you couldn't guess!)

Godsdammn, this was AWESOME. It's capitalised so it's true!!

I just can't get enough of this series. Obviously I luuuve Sam but I was so curious about Justin's voice. This whole book is in Justin's POV and I loved it. I never really hated him even if he was being an sarcastic SOB to Sam all the time. I knew it was all a farce. He secretly loved Sam but would never admit it especially not to himself. He just needed to meet his match. And that he did. Dylan was something else. He was like Sam, infuriating but weirdly enough weirder than Sam. He drove Justin up the wall with his way of speaking. I had a blast with it.

"Far out, bro," Dylan said happily. "I love love. Friend love. Boyfriend love. Husband love. Family love All of it. If we all laid down our arms and used our arms to hug, the world would be a better place."

"Oh my gods. I hate every word that came out of your mouth. Never say something like that again.

"Nah," Dylan said, grinning at me. "I'm on to you now, Roth. You try and act like this stone-cold dude, but you've got a marshmallow center, just waiting for someone to crack you open and scoop it out and cover their face in it."

Now, one little thing.... What's up with this bro talking? That drove me bonkers. I could've lived without it. And Dylan said it alllllll the time. I'm sure it was to make Dylan as annoying as possible. Well that worked.

The villain though.. Hello that was not a big surprise. Still I loved how all worked out.

I'm excited to read about Sam's and Justin's new great adventures. I'm sure there will be more of this series. I'll defintily read it.

"This is it, you know? This is what's important. You. Me. Our friends. I can't wait to see what we'll find. This Justin. This is our happily ever after."

I was very excited for the return to Verania, so I am disappointed to say that this book did not reach the level of the previous four, it's in fact the weakest TJ Klune book I've read so far.

For the first time, the POV character isn't Sam, but Justin, so a change in tone was expected. And this was well done, Justin is an interesting and quite likeable character. The old gang was still a prominent part of the book, as were the many borderline surreal plotlines that accompany the Verania books. Justin is reluctantly persuaded to get to meet Dylan, the young king of a neighboring kindgom, to whom he was promised before he was even born.

There were some aspects I really enjoyed (spoilers below):

- The unexpected ship of King Anthony with Morgan, I had never imagined it but it works and it feels very in place for the world and the characters.
- The temporary transformation of Sam and Ryan to kids gave us some very adorable moments.
- A character I despised for all the books finally got what they deserved.
- The ending! I consider the ending extremely important for my overall experience of a book, to the point that sometimes I deduct a star if the ending is unsatisfying or leaves a sour/bittersweet taste. No complaints here, I liked the twist!

This book though has some serious problems with me, which were not present in the previous Verania books:

- I start with the most important. See, Verania books use a lot of humor and banter and the characters being swoony and honestly, horny and thirsty, about their love interest. I loved it about Sam and Ryan. But this doesn't work when you find the love interest the exact opposite of handsome/sexy . I cannot imagine how TJ Klune thought that the way he described Dylan was sexy. I winced every time I read about "the beads of his beard", the tattoos everywhere, the genitals piercing, the "bush of pubic hair", the "scratching with his sideburn"...I can go on and on. I would never read a romance book where one of the two main characters has this style. Is it superficial? Yes, but the series uses physical appearance a lot in its banter, its jokes and the inner thoughts of the narrator. Thus a large part of the appeal that reading Sam's thoughts had, is gone and reversed in this book. Sorry TJ Klune, a Dothraki-looking dude-bro is...ugh.
- I had issues with the personality of Dylan as well. To put it shortly, he's like a cheap version of Ryan, without most of the things I liked about Ryan.
- The guest appearance of The Great White felt too comical, even for Verania levels. Generally, the book was somewhat of a bridge: an extended epilogue of the Myrin plotline and an introduction to a future one, but it didn't feel very solidly done.
- Last but not least, for the second book in a row, TJ Klune tries to (not subtly at all) apologize about his humor in the previous books that was deemed "unacceptable" by some people. I said this in Flash Fire , I say it now too, I do not like when the authors are forced to backtrack in order to appease the masses. Verania wouldn't be Verania without its over the top no-taboo humor.
