Duty Calls at Goodwill House by Fenella J. Miller is an engaging historical novel. It is the third book in the Goodwill House series. I recommend reading this delightful series in order as it will allow you to get to know the characters (and follow them from the beginning). I like Fenella J. Miller’s writing style. I was drawn into the story and just wanted to keep reading. It is like visiting with old friends. I love Joanna and the gang at Goodwill House. Joanna has come a long way since the beginning. She is a woman with a big heart. It is great seeing Liza and Joe blossom. Elizabeth still likes some things done a certain way, but she is becoming less formal and more congenial. We get to catch up with Millie, Ted, Di, and Freddie as well. I find the characters to be realistic and relatable. The author captures what the war was like for civilians, WAAF, and RAF. The members of Goodwill House and the local village live near an airbase. They can hear the planes coming and going. Unfortunately, it means the airbase is a target which means frequent air raid warnings. It is an emotional novel. We see what it is like to worry about a loved one who is in the air battling the Germans. You never knew if an RAF pilot would make it back to base. Measles hits the village affecting adults and children. Joanna and Elizabeth are worried about paying off the debt to the bank. The new Lord Harcourt is up to no good and the ladies are worried he will try to take Goodwill House. I like that we get to see what the day-to-day life was like for the characters. It must have been difficult trying to cloth and feed a family with rationing. With the war ongoing, it will be a while before things are tickety boo. I am eager for the next installment of Goodwill House. Duty Calls at Goodwill House is a gas with air raids, a measles epidemic, exploding eggs, pilots on a toot, a kite plight, cab happy WAAF, a cozy cottage, bank bothers, and war rationing.

Another book in the Goodwill House series. Goodwill House is helping out the war effort and we get to catch up with the characters who cross it's path doing vital work. Fenella J Mlller does a great job of making you feel as though you are in the war years along with all the characters. A lovely wartime saga that has dealt with family issues, romance, war time efforts and the type of work that the females embraced.

The third in this engaging series, DUTY CALLS AT GOODWILL HOUSE sees the return of our favourite characters in Lady Joanna Harcourt and her mother-in-law Elizabeth as well as Millie Thorrington and Di Forsyth of the local RAF base. This book picks up where the previous one "New Recruits at Goodwill House" left off with the story seamlessly continuing after Ted and Millie's wedding and the beginning of Di and Freddie's courtship.

There are many changes coming this time round in the form of a death of a beloved friend and the adoption of twins Liza and Joe. At the end of the previous book, we were introduced to the new Lord Harcourt who had inherited the title from Lady Joanna's now deceased husband, David. Whilst he seemed a pleasant sort at first, it seems he may not be all that he appears, leaving the women frantic about the future of Goodwill House. Meanwhile, measles is running rife in the village with many adults and children falling ill.

In the meantime, they are awaiting the arrival of some Land Girls who will fill the places that the WAAFs such as Millie and Di had left behind once their accommodation had been completed at RAF Manston. Joanna is looking forward to having a house full again.

War continues to rage in and across Europe with the Germans now seizing Guersney in the Channel Islands, leaving Britain fearful that they will do the same to them. So it's imperative that the RAF pilots fight to keep the Germans from invading their country and they do so by keeping them at bay above the channel. But with each scramble comes risks. The life of a fighter pilot is invariably a short one, and this is a risk that both Ted and Freddie take each time they go up. But when Freddie comes acropper when a German fires on him he is left with a quandary - does he make an escape or attempt to land his plane to the best of his ability? And should he do the latter, would he survive the landing?

DUTY CALLS AT GOODWILL HOUSE is an engaging historical saga in which the reader revisits old friends once again as the series continues. I do look forward to seeing what awaits our friends in the next book.

One thing did irritate me slightly was the continual use of the phrase "going for a Burton". A few times maybe, but it seemed that everyone in the RAF or WAAF was using the the term even in their internal monologuing narrative. Not everyone is familiar with the term and would need to google it (as I had to on a previous occasion when reading one of the books in this series) so use of the correct term would be helpful at times also. And one other thing got a little under my skin too. A seasoned writer such as Ms Miller I would have thought her research would reveal that the "Australians" she often referred to as the AAF (Australian Air Force) is actually correctly called the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force), which was established in 1921 well in time for WW2 and the setting of this series. Just a couple of niggles, but niggles all the same.

Aside from that, DUTY CALLS AT GOODWILL HOUSE is an enjoyable lighthearted read despite the WW2 setting, though it is not grim. I was thrilled to see Lazzy again (a silly name for a dog and should be called by his actual name Lazarus or just Laz) and hope that no harm comes to him despite the threats made.

There is still alot going on in the background of the series but I must say although the story surrounds much of the goings on at RAF Manston, I am more interested in life at Goodwill House, especially as that is where the series is based around.

An engaging saga that would endear many historical and wartime fiction fans but one that is best started from the beginning.

I would like to thank #FenellaJMiller, #Netgalley, #BoldwoodBooks and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #DutyCallsAtGoodwillHouse in exchange for an honest review.

I have been a fan of Fenella’s work for a while now. By no means have I read everything that she has written but I have read several of her books and enjoyed every one of them. Fenella’s new book is called ‘Duty Calls At Goodwill House’, which is the third book in the ‘Goodwill House’ series, and it was released on 26th July 2022. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Duty Calls At Goodwill House’ but more about that in a bit.
As with all of Fenella’s books, the synopsis of the book was enough to grab my attention and the story within the covers of the book was the icing on the cake so to speak. As soon as I started reading, I felt as though I had been reunited with old friends in the form of the various characters. To say that reading ‘Duty Calls At Goodwill House’ became addictive is a bit of an understatement. I would pick the book up only intending to read a chapter or two but I would become so wrapped up in the lives and loves of the various characters that I would still be sat there reading several chapters and over an hour later. This story stayed with me whether I had my Kindle in my hands or not. If I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking about it. If I had to put the book to one side then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Duty Calls At Goodwill House’ and I had to say goodbye to the various characters. I found ‘Duty Calls At Goodwill House’ to be a gripping, emotional and dramatic read, which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat.
‘Duty Calls At Goodwill House’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Fenella J. Miller. Fenella has one of those easy going writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of Fenella’s books feels more like a chat between friends rather than reading an actual book. I hope that makes sense. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly brisk pace throughout. Fenella clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. Fenella makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. Fenella has clearly done a lot of research into the time period in which the story takes place and that makes the story seem that bit more authentic. I have a particular interest in the Second World War and through reading books such as Fenella’s, I feel as though I now have a better understanding of what it was like to live through the war years. I love the way in which Fenella makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That’s how I felt at any rate.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Duty Calls At Goodwill House’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I hope to read much more of Fenella’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

Period drama fans are sure to enjoy Fenella J Miller’s latest captivating saga, Duty Calls at Goodwill House.

It’s July 1940 and Hitler’s bombs continue to fall relentlessly. WAAF Diane Forsyth wants to do something to help the brave pilots who take to the skies night after night and risk their lives for king and country. Determined to do her bit, Diane vows to face danger head on and not to let her fears get in the way of her duty. Having recently formed a friendship with Squadron Leader Freddie Hanover, Diane hopes that her friend stays safe amidst of all the danger and jeopardy he faces – especially as she has found herself falling in love with him.

With the world so uncertain and the future so bleak and hopeless, Diane knows heartbreak is a distinct possibility. Their love could end up being a casualty of this cruel war and despite her head telling her to keep things strictly platonic with Freddie, her heart is telling her something else entirely. Will Diane and Freddie ever have a future together? Or is their love simply not meant to be?

Lady Joanna Harcourt knows only too well just how unpredictable life can be. In these desperate times, one must cherish every moment and not waste a single second because it can be taken from you in a heartbeat. Joanna certainly understands Diane’s dilemma as she has taken a similar vow of duty herself.

Will Joanna and Diane manage to rise above all the obstacles in their path? Or will both of their futures end up marked by sorrow and disappointment?

Fenella J Miller’s wonderful wartime series is a must-read for readers missing Downton Abbey. In the third instalment, Duty Calls at Goodwill House, Fenella J Miller has once again penned a vivid, poignant and entertaining wartime tale about love, courage and sacrifice full of strong and beautifully drawn characters readers cannot fail but be enchanted by.

Beautifully evocative, wonderfully emotional and immensely enjoyable, put the kettle on, find a comfy chair and indulge in Fenella J Miller’s latest captivating saga, Duty Calls at Goodwill House.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

First off, I completely missed it when requesting this book to read that it was part of a series. And at the beginning, that definitely made a difference for me when reading Duty Calls at Goodwill House. Because it’s the third book in a series, the reader is dropped into events and introduced to so many people at once that it took me until about 20% into the book before I felt I had a handle on who everyone was and how they fit into the story. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad book, but the backstory is in the previous books, The War Girls of Goodwill House and New Recruits at Goodwill House, which I hadn’t read.

That being said, Duty Calls at Goodwill House checks off so many boxes for me for an historical fiction book. World War II, the English countryside, women and men working for the war effort, the air raid drills, the rationing, everything one has read about regarding the war is brought to life. I really felt the sense of patriotism the characters felt, and how no sacrifice was too much.

I enjoyed the focus on the women of the war effort, who until recently, were forgotten. I also appreciated the dialogue, to a point. There were some phrases used repeatedly, like tickety-boo, or “going for a Burton” that were a little annoying. Not EVERYONE uses the same slang so that got on my nerves a little, but it’s a minor complaint.

Overall, I appreciated this look into the life of an English village and its inhabitants during World War II. I thought I was getting tired of all the World War II books that seem to have glutted the market the past few years, but I’m certainly glad I picked up this book. I’ll definitely be picking up the first two volumes in the series, and hope there are more to come.

Duty Calls at Goodwill House by Fenella J Miller gives readers a chance to catch up with the people we have come to know and their trials during World War II. Goodwill House is a manor house in which live a variety of people, including Elizabeth the dowager, and her daughter-in-law, Lady Joanna Harcourt. They lost the title when Joanna’s husband died, but not the house. They had taken in boarders from the base, teens fleeing from the bombing in London, and now farm girls. It was a good life for them and now Joanna was adopting the teens that they had with them and making them true Harcourts. The story also follows Millie and Diana on the base, and their lives and loves as well as the pilots we we have become fond of. Too often WWII fiction focuses on the Holocaust and the camps and fails to realize that there were people back home who had lives and suffered as well.

Miller is doing a nice job with this saga. She has given us a variety of characters of all ages and made most of them sympathetic. The reader is anxious to be with them as they move forward and live their lives. There is not an overarching plot, but rather a slice of life, but there are subplots, which we follow with interest. I am a huge soap opera fan, in all forms, and so, I love this type of book. I love following the characters and, really, even the places, as the war progresses and life goes on. I appreciate that someone writes this kind of book, giving me insight into the lives of people so far removed from my own. There is a need.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Duty Calls at Goodwill House by Boldwood, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Boldwood #FenellaJMiller #DutyCallsAtGoodwillHouse

Duty Calls At Goodwill House by Fenella J Miller is a marvellous historical novel and the third book in the Goodwill House series. It can be read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading the other books first.
The war is continuing in 1940 as we rejoin the residents of Goodwill House. It was a pure delight to catch up with familiar faces, both civilians and serving RAF members. The reader follows the action from the village to the base to the skies.
Whilst war looms large, every day life continues. There are adjustments to be made in the running of Goodwill House. The residents have never been aloof but friendly with those below stairs. We witness the mellowing of the matriarch as love permeates the residents. It is a delight to witness the teenage twins transform from rough east enders to beloved family members.
Tragedies still happen in everyday life that have nothing to do with the war. Illness strikes and cruelly cuts down young lives, leaving gaping holes.
Life needs to be grabbed by both hands as tomorrow is not guaranteed.
All the characters are likable and realistic. It is delightful to see their interactions and to ‘feel’ the love as one of their own is lost.
Fenella J Miller writes with knowledge and depth of feeling as she explores lives and relationships of those in, and also nearby, Goodwill House. Characters arrive at Goodwill House as strangers but leave as friends. I look forward to more installments from Goodwill House.
I received a free copy via Net Galley for a blog tour with Rachel’s Random Resources. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

I am learning so much from Fenella J. Miller's Goodwill House Series. Who knew that learning about WW2 could be so enjoyable? The author has brought the human side to what is usually learned in textbook with just the facts and only the boring facts.

Duty Calls at Goodwill House is the third book in the series. I will admit I have become invested with many of the characters, and was pleased to revisit them. I celebrated their happiness. I cried over their losses. I cringed over their struggles. I relished in the drama as my eyes were opened wider to life in WW2.

This story showed me more of challenges that the villagers had to deal with during the war. I can't begin to imagine dealing with all of the rationing and then have to struggle with an outbreak of measles. To make matters worse the war is coming to the area.

The bases are at risk. Planes are crashing. Villagers are dodging bullets. Things are getting real and I am understanding more and more what my mom and her family went through.

I can't wait for the next installment. There is so much going on in the series. My mind is going crazy with what might be happening on the pages of book four.

This is the third book in the series, and this time we rejoin Lady Joanna Harcourt and her mother-in-law Elizabeth at Goodwill House but the storyline focusses more on the lives of two of the WAAFs, Millie & Di, who we met in book 2.
Goodwill House is quite empty as the WAAFs have left, but they hope to get some Land Girls soon. In the meantime we have wartime romances, a case of measles in the village, and the twins Liza & Joe become much more part of the family. Of course, things don’t go completely to plan and Lady Joanna & Lady Elizabeth must sort things out to prevent the new Lord Harcourt from getting his hands on the non-entitled estate.
It’s a quite light read, and the story moves quickly with plenty going on. It will appeal to people who like lighthearted wartime romances, and if only the author could have reduced the use of “tickety-boo”, I might have given this an extra star!

Disclosure: I received an advance reader copy of this book free via NetGalley. Whilst thanks go to the author & publisher for the opportunity to read it, all opinions are my own & my review is left voluntarily.

Excellent story set in England about couples going through the war, each serving in their own way. Goodwill House is a Lords house, where they are going through many changes as well. The war affects each of them strongly. The girls are friends and or acquaintances at some points in time. Two of the guys are best friends and close to two of the girls who are best friends. Things happen that each of them has to struggle through. These four are also all enlisted. It's a pretty in-depth story of them all, and this is just part of an ongoing tale. Makes you want to read the next one right away.

I received this book free from the publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I love dipping in and out of this series and I’m slowly making my way through, along with reading some of the newer series and standalones by Fenella J Miller. In all of her books, she sets the wartime scene effortlessly and it’s no hardship at all to slip yourself immediately into wartime vibes.

I’ve found myself getting more and more fond of our characters of Goodwill House and I always look forward to rejoining them in their stories and in meeting new faces too. I also cant wait for the next one, because as a huge fan of the Land Girls and titled :The Land Girls at Goodwill House, I’m all for it!!

Each of our beloved characters all venture further on in their respective story developments and plot lines, from romances, to marriage and more. There’s plenty of action and drama that you’d expect from a wartime novel too to keep you reading on. As ever, I’m excited to continue on and glad there’s many more to go before the series end.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

another book in this wonderful series and it starts where the previous book left off....

it was great to be back in the company of some really lovely characters that we know and love and to see how life is faring for them all....

the R.A.F men are starting to fly their spitfires and germany are planning an invasion but nobody know when

we also see tragedy happen when measles hits the village and a beloved member dies....

but its how well the inhabitants of goodwill house are coping with all that is being thrown at them

a pleasant read and i am looking forward to the next book in this series as i suspect things are going to get dicey for the family at goodwill house

The third installment of the Goodwill House series, and what a series it's been so far. You could read this as a standalone, but I highly recommend the full series to meet the 'cast' and get the full experience.

The story engaging, entertaining and it's always a pleasure to visit old friends at Goodwill.

Full of our much loved characters alongside some new, who all play their part in and around the RAF base. There is a great sense of community and patriotism, and through the eyes of these characters, their efforts thoughout the war are brought to life, making the story more credible.

With friendships, a touch of romance and set amid the glorious English countryside...what exactly is there not to like?

Many thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for my tour spot.

Sadly, after the enjoyable second book this third one was again a disappointment, like the first book.
Couldn't get behind Di's motives, first trying to keep things casual, and then falling in love head over heals. From "I want to get married in half a year" to "Let's get married yesterday" within a day, sounded quite mentally unstable to me. (I get there's a war and it was different from today back then, with Ted and Millie I could understand it, but Freddy and Di didn't convince me.)
Also, Johanna is worrying one evening about her mother-in-law's mental health, and the next time it's her perspective the concerns are just dismissed without another explanation.
Generally, the things that bothered me with the first book bothered me again with this one.

Thank you #netgalley and #boldwoodbooks and #rachelsrandomresources for letting me read this ARC. Gosh, I love Fenella's writing style soo much, beautiful. I am so excited to be back at Goodwill House meeting old and new characters. Picking up on old loose ends and creating new storylines and love stories. Loved being reminded of the RAF/ Military Lingo. Some touched me harder as my dad is ex RAF Police Dog Section and he has dementia so memories flowed to me. Who doesn't love that NAAFI break? I love the formalities of days gone by and the respect given. Love, love, love. Cant wait for more. What can I say? I am a definitely and absolute fan girl.

What an enjoyable story about heros in WW2. Each character was well written and believable. I was especially interested as my family lived in England during this time.
Diane was my favorite. She was determined to make it in the Service. She was not going to fall in love with a pilot. She was not going to be deterred from her goals.

Life can throw you a curve ball. Diane found that out. Did you have your life all planned out? Did it work out? I can answer that for me. I would have not married my love of my life. I would not have had the career I had for 28 years. I wouldn't have retired at 55.

A great read

This was a great follow on to the previous books taking all the characters off in New directions showing the tragedy of war but also how joy comes unexpectedly.
The only negative was the ending . Happy yes but seemed to leave so much unfinished . Clearly there's going to be another book but usually ends are tidied up. Here we don't know where Millie is training , what Freddie will do, the intent of the new Lord Harcourt and much more

What a lovley to read.

Such an enjoyable book to read. Hadn't read the books in series before this one, but got into the story straight away. Characters felt so real and I felt I was actually there, lost myself completely in this book. Couldn't put it down once I picked it up, such a great way to relax on my break at work, and also bedtime reading. Pre ordered the next one in this series, can't wait to read it.

Having not read the previous books in the series I did struggle at the start with all the different characters.

This was though a really well written story which dragged me in and at the end left me wanting more.

The Characters were well developed and it felt like you were there in 1940.

Well worth a read.

I have enjoyed this series that takes place in Kent during the beginning of WWII. This was the third in the series and involves both the women at Harcourt Manor who make do with the challenges that war brings, along with two women and their men who work at the local RAF base. Sorry to wait until November when the next in series is due out!

This series is so good and just can't put it down. Love all the characters and all they get up too. Can't wait to read the next one. Fenella ia a great story teller and these books have been well researched. Highly recommend this series.
