Obscure by Krista Walsh is book one in her Ghostmaker trilogy and is something totally unique - a fantasy/urban fantasy set in the 'Canadian' Government. It's theme is "...to persevere under threat. To cling to hope when everything is in doubt." and Krista delivers that with all the emotion and amazing characters her writing is known for.
A team of magical law enforcement personal, lead by Captain Jet Dawson, tries to capture a local drug lord but are betrayed. In her pursuit of justice, and at times, vengeance, Jet is helped by her half Fae friend and granddaughter of the Fae Queen, Maddison, who works as chief of staff for the Minister of the Supernatural, Magical and Occult Affairs Canada. An old love of Jet's turns up with his own motives and the three do their best to pursue leads, often outside the rules of their system, much to the frustration of their bosses and despite threats to their careers.
This is a high tension mystery/action story. It's length (489 pages) allows for complex plot and world development, which the author pulls off brilliantly. The characters are all authentic in their relationships, ethics and emotions - Jet's dedication to her team and the grief and guilt she is swamped by after their betrayal are some of the most vivid and empathetic reactions I've read. The overlap of the mundane and supernatural realms is very cleverly written with technology snd psychology used to support the camoflage. The political intrigue is off the charts, with threats, deception and manipulation everywhere.
If you like tough FMC's who wield magic and can kick butt, a strong found family vibe, second chance romances and some supernatural v's human politics, then this is the book for you.
