I'm the author, so this is not a review.

It IS, however, my effusive praise for how much I love this series.

The fight scenes were great fun to write...
The slow-burn, second-chance romance (steam ahead!) were great fun to edit...
And basing this story in the city where I've lived almost my entire life? A new and exciting adventure.

This is my love letter to my friends in the public service--with a supernatural twist.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed my years creating it. Can't wait to hear what you think!

I received an ARC copy of this book and I loved it!!! It starts with a blast, literally, and never slows down. The characters are interesting and believable. Jet is fighting a war with her own beliefs while she tries to find those responsible for the attacks on her team. Madison is only beginning to understand that remaining in the background may no longer be possible for her. Gideon may have to follow his heart one day. Who knows? Talk about cliffhanger endings. This hasn't officially been published and I am jonesing for the sequel. Krista??????

Supernatural, Magical, and Occult Affairs Canada.

There were two first for me with this read. This was my first time reading a novel written by Krista Walsh. And this was my first time obtaining an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of a novel. I have no complaints on either front. This was a great read. Krista does a nice job setting up the rules for this magical world in the preface and she creates interesting magical abilities within the confines of the world.

Obscure: Ghostmaker Book 1 is the first in this trilogy. The story is told from the point of view of three characters: Jet, Madison, and Gideon. All three voices are interesting, informative, and advance the plot. This novel is a page turner from start to finish. The story sucks the reader in and keeps you there. Chapter one starts with an explosive introduction to the main character and the magical Canadian world she lives in and the storyline stays action pack right to the end.

A great place for an urban fantasy and a personal favourite for me, a Canadian setting. I enjoyed being familiar in a personal way with the places the action was happening and the places that were talked about outside of the direct story action. However, being familiar with the Canadian setting is not required to enjoy the story, but for me it was an added bonus.

If there was anything I didn’t like about Obscure, it would be that the story came to an end. I hope I don’t have long to wait for book two…

If you enjoy urban fantasy, strong female leads, supernaturals, romance, and action then this book is for you. Publication is set for July 1, 2022.

We are introduced to a fascinating and powerful new version of the world in this first book in the Ghostmaker series. The plot is intricate and absorbing, the characters compelling, the writing clean and evocative. Ms. Walsh has an uncanny ability to make characters who are wonderfully relatable and flawed & to whom I feel deeply connected...even if I actually have very little in common with them. I want to know these people in real life! Often in fiction with superpowered characters the powers fall into similar qualities: invisibility, flight, super strength. Ms. Walsh has thought beyond these and has given some brilliant out-of-the-box traits to her powered characters. No spoilers, but it is very cool, and yet another reason to read this book!

I have enjoyed each book written by Krista Walsh as she excels in story and character development.

I just finished an ARC copy of OBSCURE last night and this book shows Krista at the top of her skills!

Imagine if the year the Dominion of Canada was created by the British North American act (1867) a parallel act created a Department of Supernatural, Magic and Occult Affairs. This department is responsible for the specific needs of supernatural citizens of Canada who live along mundane citizens in our reality. Imagine if other Supernatural beings live in a reality on the other side of a “wall” from our reality - The Queen of that realm expects the Department to ensure mundane citizens are never aware of the existence of their neighbours.

This is the world the story in Obscure takes place in.

The book starts as a security forces team led by Jet Dawson is preparing to raid a location supposedly held by crime syndicate responsible for a deadly drug killing supernaturals.

The raid goes terribly wrong. She survives and is determined to figure out why half her team is dead.

This story combines mystery, politics, intrigue, a dash paranormal romance, and complex characters.

I especially enjoyed two characters -Jet who is both extremely capable and pushing through experiencing anger, sorrow and trauma to catch those responsible. Her best friend Madison a capable public servant, gifted empath, and someone who balances between the mundane and supernatural world.

I finished this first book in the series wanting to read book two as soon as possible.

Read Obscure as soon as you get the chance.

Now this is what I call a thumping good read!

Obscure is one of those books that will keep you turning pages long into the hours of the night and have you diving straight into the sequel.
It's part urban fantasy, part supernatural thriller and all out action. All of the best kind.

It kicks off with a bang that will get any reader hooked and keeps a pace all throughout, that's wild enough to make it pretty hard to set the book down. With a great combination of intriguing mystery and politics, top notch action and fabulous characters. The badass awesome kind.

The characters and their development were the highlight of this book for me. Not that the rest was faulty because it really wasn't. I have nothing to bitch about anything in Obscure. Except perhaps for the part that it got over. And I didn't have book 2. Something that was easily remedied because the sequel is already out, and I grabbed a copy. See. Problem solved. No bitching required. I'm good.

But back to the characters, because I digress. They are all not only relatable in one way or another, but also practically leaping from the page. Jet and Madison were my favourites and I honestly wish I had them as my BFFs.
They're badass!

All in all, Obscure is one hell of a supernatural thriller/urban fantasy that any fan of the genre will absolutely love.
A damn fine action packed edge of the seat read that will leave you wanting for more.

And no. I'm not just saying it like that. I told you I already got book 2, didn't I?
Trust me. You'll probably do the same too.

I just finished the advance reader's copy of Obscure I received for review, and I am anxious to get my hands on the second book in Krista Walsh's new Ghostmaker series already. Another fun and thrilling urban fantasy series, set in my hometown of Ottawa, this first book is a quick and entertaining read with special insights and jokes for public servants in the Government of Canada. If you like spy thrillers, mysteries, and urban fantasy, this new series will not disappoint.

Captain Jet Dawson leads her team into a nightmare. Their intelligence was wrong and leaves her team devastated and with her wanting revenge on who ever was responsible. But she blames herself, so needs to find out whatever she can to avenge her team, wherever the clues may lead her.

This is the first book in the Ghostmaker trilogy and makes a great start. Set in Canada, we meet an interesting array of characters who all feel believable, realistic but with interesting supernatural talents. It felt a bit of a slow burner initially but soon ramped up the tension and intrigue. I liked the 3 main female characters, Jet, her best friend Madison and the Queen. All feisty, strong and definitely independent women. I hope the wait won’t be too long for the next book.

BLUF: Not a thriller, barely a mystery, sorta fantasy, mostly drama.

This book's blurb and some of the reviews made it sound like an action packed thriller with a mystery. After reading it, I'd say it was a thinly veiled mystery wrapped around a lot of internal monologue and fretting.

The book starts off well...good action scene, some background, and a description of characters that makes them seem like an urban fantasy equivalent of X-men (each with their own supernatural power). That's the first 5% or so...the other 95% is filled with the internal monologue of one protagonist dealing with the first action scene, the second protagonist worrying about the first, and the third doing...not much.

There were a lot of unanswered questions, which might be addressed in the sequels.

The narrator's voice was fine for the audio book, but I felt like she was constantly on the brink of breaking down into tears for the two protagonists. Lots of "concern" and internal thoughts and worrying.

If you want to read the internal dialogue of some folks that work at a secret, supernatural agency in Canada and deal with their PTSD after a loss, this is the book for you. If you want action, skip this one.

Full disclosure: I am a Canadian federal public servant who lives in Ottawa so I LOVED all the Ottawa/Canadian references in the book. The canal, Tim’s, bank street, centre town, Nepean, south keys… loved it! It was fun to imagine there is this whole other world that exists and a whole ministry set up to support supernaturals (while still dealing with the same bureaucracy silliness that permeates the public service). I was really engaged in the story and thought it was well-paced. I liked the character development, as well as the use of three characters’ perspectives for the book. I will happily read the next book!!
I received an ARC direct from the author, which was greatly appreciated, with views all my own.

Once I started, I couldn’t put this down! Obscure is part political thriller, part urban fantasy, and all action. It is clear from the very beginning that something big is happening deep within the Canadian government and the book keeps you on the edge of your seat as the main characters try to put all of the pieces together before disaster strikes again. Though it starts with a bang (literally) and moves at a fast pace, it does take a while for the story to truly find its footing. However, it is well worth the investment once things really begin to click.

The story throws you right into a magical Canada where the supernatural exists in secret from the mundane population with some people capable of using certain supernatural abilities. The government agency Supernatural, Magical and Occult Affairs Canada (SMOAC) is charged with overseeing all supernatural affairs and ensuring that the existence of the supernatural remains hidden from the human populace. The beginning throws you into a raid without really knowing any of the players or what’s at stake. However, this effectively creates a ‘chaotic’ feel that and I was quickly engrossed in this world. The various abilities the characters have are really interesting and the moments witty commentary on public service were really on point and added a bit of levity.

Though enjoyable as a whole, the story and character development needed to be a little tighter. This is particularly true at the beginning. There are quite a few moments of extra fluff that are repetitive and/or do not really add to the characters or story in a meaningful way. To be fair, I think a lot of them have a purpose but either fall short of achieving their goal or simply take too long to get there. As a result, the story will very suddenly start to drag even when interesting things are happening. It is most noticeable at the beginning of the story just because there are so many elements Walsh is trying to introduce in a relatively short amount of space. This is a relatively minor critique as things get much better as the story progresses.

Overall, this was a fast and enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone into a politically bent urban fantasy. A friendly warning that this is the first of a series and definitely leaves you wanting more!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from this new to me author. The plot was simple - track down the bad guys and stop them from causing even more deaths and problems, but the execution was so detailed and full of turmoil and emotion. It was a great read that I just didn't want to put down!

The FMC was a great main character - she was ruthless, relentless, strong, determined and would do anything for those she cared about. Her determination to see to the end of this mysterious syndicate should have been her downfall, but it wasn't! If anything else, it made her even more resigned to get to the end and find out who was responsible for everything going on! Between Jet and her best friend, the action, the emotions and tension were great reading! There was also a touch of possible enemy to lovers romance, but not sure if that arc will play out or not just yet!

There were several twists and turns and possible betrayals, which have not yet been fully resolved, so I know I have to read the next book in this series when it comes out to find out more!

I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSirens, but this review is my own, honest one!

A well written supernatural thriller
I just finished this and I have so many questions...
The book started with a bang, literally, a bomb went off, a ghost bomb. Ghost in this world of supernaturals is a drug that enhances abilities, and opens the minds of mudanes to see but should be taken only in very small doses and even then, it's still dangerous, but in lethal amounts it tears your brain apart and it decimated Jet's team. It sets her, Madison, and Gideon on the hunt for those responsible, but are they chasing the right people and how deep does this conspiracy run? I don't want to spoil the ride so find out what happens for yourself in this well written thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you try to unravel what's really happening.

I loved this book. It has strong characters, which are not perfect, who have history, but are brave and loyal at the same time.

Jet has a habit of grabbing the bottle a bit too frequent, until that doesn't help her anymore and she has to face her weakness. But is worrying about her team a weakness? I don't think so. Jet is not making it easy for herself, and when she walks into the one person she doesn't want to see, trouble finds her.

Madison and Jet, I love their friendship.

Gideon, he wants to do the right thing, but ends up doing the other, by hurting the woman who managed to crawl under his skin.

The three of them are well written characters, and I want to know what is next for them, if they make it, that is...

I highly recommend this book to readers of urban fantasy, to folks looking to step out of their day-to-day and into a world that exists alongside our own. As a resident of Ottawa and a bonafide public servant myself, it was incredibly fun to read this novel and recognize both landmarks and oh-so-delightful bureaucratic processes. Walsh does an excellent job of grounding her fantasy in a very real world - I find myself looking into windows as I walk down Slater, and wondering if I'm really seeing everything that's there. Walsh builds complex characters that drive the story. I need to know what happens next for Jet & Madison!

A fast-paced thriller of supernatural proportions! This story, set in Canada’s capital, delves into the inner workings of the secret government agency tasked with protecting and serving Canada’s hidden supernatural population. When a bomb takes out half her task force, Jet will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of these drug bombs and take vengence on the drug lord wreaking havoc in her community. Super powers, bar fights, murder, and deceit, not too mention a handsome American secret agent sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong.
I loved this book and am not-so-patiently waiting on book 2 of this series!

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of this book, and it was such a delight. Nonstop action that immersed me in a world of magic that felt real. It was X-Men meets Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings in Canada, and I was 1000% here for it. I need the rest of the trilogy stat.

Obscure reads like a Jefferey Archer spy novel, but with two female MCs and magic. It starts with a bang (quite literally) when Jet, the captain of a special forces team in the supernatural arm of the Canadian Government, stops a mob syndicate from bombing downtown Ottawa. Several of her team members are hurt or killed and Jet has to deal with the fallout. Her BFF, Madison, is a bigwig in the supernatural government and the great-granddaughter of the fae queen who lives across the veil and magnanimously lets her people venture out into our world.

After this explosive beginning, the story pulls back for a slow buildup as Jet and Madison break some rules to find out who is behind the bombing. I enjoyed this buildup because it let me get to know the MCs, so that when things heated up again, I was really invested.

Other things I liked about this story include the unique magical talents of each of the characters and the shifting POV. There is a third, POV character (Jet’s past love interest), and showing parts of the story from his perspective added a whole new dimension. Plus it avoided the whole alpha-hole syndrome because, even though Jet thinks he’s a jerk, the reader understands his motivation.

The ending was intense and left things on a bit of a cliffhanger, which isn’t a problem because book 2 is readily available. I highly recommend this to readers who love fantasy suspense, with just a hint of romance.

Full disclosure: I provided editorial services to the author on this book. So I might be biased. But I wouldn't write a review if I didn't genuinely love the book.

And I love this book.

Each of the three POV characters is interesting in their own way. And they play off each other beautifully.

As someone who grew up near Ottawa, I'm also completely captivated by this gritty urban fantasy version of a city I used to call home.

Honestly, the Ottawa in this book is the Ottawa I want to live in.

If you enjoy urban fantasy, slow burn/second chance romance, badass female leads, strong female friendships, political intrigue, and snappy banter... add this book to your list!

I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review consideration.

I've read everything Krista Walsh has published - I LOVE her writing style and how intricate her plots get. I was excited to read a series set in Ottawa, Ontario, as - being American - I know very little about Canada and am intrigued by it.

Some of the characters' supernatural abilities were familiar to me, but many of them were new, such as Gideon's being able to "mist" away. One character is described as a "water-shifter" who can turn bits of himself into water. Jet can see shadows of past events with her third eye. Also, Madison's grandmother sends her tea with the addition of magical plants that literally help calm one's nerves. I definitely need some of that!

The action and intrigue builds all the way through the book, and I kept trying to guess who could be trusted and who couldn't. I got more and more invested in the characters and the action, and when I reached the end, I couldn't wait to start book two!

Obscure is the first book in a new Trilogy called Ghostmaker by the amazing Krista Walsh.
The Story is set in Ottawa, Canada and the action is very entertaining with fast paced, and it keeps you on your toes. The characters are clearly descripted and each character has various amounts of special powers.
Captain Jet Dawson is a soldier set on a mission after most of her team is drastically taken out by a dangerous Street drug called Ghost. Jet's main goal is to find and stop it's manufacturer to save the Fae and the Mundane (human) worlds.
Gideon is someone from Jet's past but he does the same kind of work that Jet does but in the United States.
Madison is Jet's best friend.. and When Jet's team gets decimated Madison is there to help pick up the pieces of Jet and set her straight.
If you like fast paced thrilling action this book is for you.. I loved reading Obscured ands gave it 5 stars as it is well deserved. I am excited to read book 2 to see what happens next.

I have been a fan of Krista Walsh's books for many years and was very excited to receive an ARC of her most recent urban fantasy. Obscure is the first book in her Ghostmaker trilogy and it does not disappoint. In it Ms. Walsh has created a very realistic scenario through her world-building and her characters are well developed. MC, Captain Jet Dawson and her "team" are drawn into the darkest shadows as they work to uncover a supernatural drug syndicate. Obscure is a story of friendship, loyalty and (possibly) second chance romance. So join Jet, Madison and Gideon as they literally work to save their world. I am really looking forward to the release of the second book and seeing where the story takes us next.

Obscure by Krista Walsh is book one in her Ghostmaker trilogy and is something totally unique - a fantasy/urban fantasy set in the 'Canadian' Government. It's theme is "...to persevere under threat. To cling to hope when everything is in doubt." and Krista delivers that with all the emotion and amazing characters her writing is known for.

A team of magical law enforcement personal, lead by Captain Jet Dawson, tries to capture a local drug lord but are betrayed. In her pursuit of justice, and at times, vengeance, Jet is helped by her half Fae friend and granddaughter of the Fae Queen, Maddison, who works as chief of staff for the Minister of the Supernatural, Magical and Occult Affairs Canada. An old love of Jet's turns up with his own motives and the three do their best to pursue leads, often outside the rules of their system, much to the frustration of their bosses and despite threats to their careers.

This is a high tension mystery/action story. It's length (489 pages) allows for complex plot and world development, which the author pulls off brilliantly. The characters are all authentic in their relationships, ethics and emotions - Jet's dedication to her team and the grief and guilt she is swamped by after their betrayal are some of the most vivid and empathetic reactions I've read. The overlap of the mundane and supernatural realms is very cleverly written with technology snd psychology used to support the camoflage. The political intrigue is off the charts, with threats, deception and manipulation everywhere.

If you like tough FMC's who wield magic and can kick butt, a strong found family vibe, second chance romances and some supernatural v's human politics, then this is the book for you.

Not sure why I am surprised… having read many other books by Krista Walsh and loving them…. But Obscure really captivated me and drew me into the story from the first page. Krista does an amazing job of setting up the scene - explaining the set up between mundane and magical beings and their governing bodies - without making it overwhelming. In Obscure we get the POV of Jet, Madison, and Gideon - each of whom you fall in love with and are eager to learn more about. The story begins with a BIG BANG (quite literally) as Jets team faces a tragedy and many of which lose their lives - it was quite emotional following Jet as she dealt with this loss and grief in her own way… never giving up and continuing to fight for those who lost their lives. I loved Madison’s desire to serve her community and her big dreams of equality between the magical and mundane people. Gideon was a fun character and I CANNOT wait to learn more about him and his past. This story, from the very beginning, was action packed. There is amazing banter between Jet and Gideon and many moments that had me smiling. The mystery of who is behind the tragedy keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire book… I’m eager for book 2 so I can get some answers as to who what when where and how!! Having read some of Krista’s other books… I REALLY LOVED the overlap between worlds and characters that arose - nothing like seeing a character that feels like an old friend and learning more about them!

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book but it started with a bang. Literally. And somehow I found myself swept up in it. The politics was intriguing and the characters are great.
I will eat up anything that has supernaturals with super powers, like that shit is my drug and here it was exciting to see so many people with powers.
The way it ended made me immediately pick up the next book. I hope more things are figured out about the corruption because all I’ve learnt is they should really not trust anybody
Also why is Jet a female name I was so confused
And either I didn’t get a few things like why SMOAC I went in for the vibes and purely skimmed this book

I devoured it page by page as the action, suspense and betrayals kept skyrocketing. Jet, a supernatural squad captain, veered of the straight and narrow after nearly half of her team got erased acting on false Intel. Gideon, who deceived her in the past for information, is back in the picture and old feelings are simmering. Jet and Madison are two strong female character leads. I'm definitely planning to read the rest of the trilogy as soon as possible after the cliffhanger ending.
