Master of disguise, disarray and disorder. Let loose on the universe, the Master is doing what he will to serve his own ends.
2.1 The Craft of Corruption by Alison Winter - The Master is posing as ship's counsellor on an interstellar cruise liner: the fastest transport in a galaxy where lightspeed travel is outlawed by the overbearing Interstellar Protection Corps. All he needs to do is keep out of trouble until the ship crosses into a sector outside IPC jurisdiction. But trouble abhors a vacuum.
2.2 The Ideal Quarry by Jody Houser - To make his journey more interesting, the Master has decided to take on a travelling companion - disgraced Sontaran Vegg, who is keen to get home for his execution. But soon the Master and his escort are marooned on a world where they are not the only hunters. In fact, they are the quarry.
2.3 Reformation by Lisa McMullin - The Master is incarcerated in a reformation chamber where only his own moral conscience can free him. He's in big trouble.
2.1 The Craft of Corruption - Sacha Dhawan is perhaps my favorite incarnation of The Master. He is positively delicious. Really enjoyed this one. (3/5)
2.2 The Ideal Quarry - This one didn’t quite work for me. Which is sad as I love Dan Starkey. Maybe, when I get around to a revisit, I’ll be in a better headspace. (2/5)
2.3 Reformation - The Master has always been brilliant, devious, Machiavellian, vicious, etc. But this one shows a Master that it completely psychopathic. (4/5)
me at the master, when listening the three stories: "what is wrong with him you wonder? everything is wrong with him. and you know what? i love that for him."
i liked the stories in this second set a tad more compared to the first set. i wasn't expecting to be laughing this much, too. overall really great writing.
sacha dhawan brings something chaotic yet raw to the table, when it comes to the master. i suppose that's why his iteration of the master is my favourite...
I've been intending on coming back and writing a review ever since listening to this, but I've never had the time to properly sit down and write out all my feelings from the notes I wrote whilst listening to it. So, for now, I'm just going to copy over my reactions to things, because I did really enjoy this set and want to leave a good review.
He’s stealing the Doctor’s alias!!!!! Bitch!!! Bit quirky innit Little sexy bits, tongue clicking, deep voice, whispering He’s been trying to make her resign 😭 He’s being quirkier in points but when he’s NOT being quirkier he’s a lot better characterised, he’s got lines a lot more similar to his TV appearing The alien kept repeating itself about its goal to take passport, but also couldn’t decide if it was going to his people for freedom or to sell online to anyone “He had emotional issues” “that hurts my feelings” I liked Jemima’s twist of helping people The pet names!!! Drums mentioned Ends on a cool poem like Zagreus style They didn’t make a joke of him so it was the best one so far Good setting up for the monster to be him, vague descriptions that fit him, the sighting on the parking deck
Episode 2: Voice PERFECTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT They’ve written him less like Missy in this series! Much better “I am usually referred to as the Master.”
“I would like to speak to the manager” HE’S FLIRTING This is my favourite use of Sontarans in Big Finish they normally annoy me He’s funny!! The master is funny!! TCE MENTION MOANING THE WORD DARLINGGGGGG GROWLS LIKE A DOG??? “Or spite. Probably spite.” AHHHHHH Making him say his name, making him say please and thank you, yes sir They’ve done so much better with this boxset, he’s actually the main character, it actually is stories about him and not stories about other people where he is the villain HE’S SO CLEVER he notices things “DARLING” AGAIN I love all of the little Time Lord references in the last two episodes, references to Gallifrey and him having multiple hearts- they’re all things we know but it’s sooo good to hear him saying them, to hear him bragging about them He’s being sassy I love him I love Time Lords being SCARY OH MY GOD THE TALK OF THE TIME WAR!! HE’S FUCKING TRAUMATISED OH MY GODDDD The Sontaran’s little obsession with sticks was actually quite funny I love this He’s so hot, so HIM “You can’t change what you were born to be, I know that better than most.” POST MISSY CRUMBS
Episode 3: “Have you been a bad girl?” Academy - a boy AND a girl?? Was absolutely vibing the entire time giggling kicking my feet but the whole conscience thing was portrayed like some big reveal with it was literally in the synopsis, what a bad move
