Kaylie Lynn leaves home after high school to pursue her dreams of acting in theater and is chosen to be part of a program to help up-and-coming youths get experience before going to college. She gets a crush on one of the actors and discovers that he and others who work in the theater are vampires. The situation between them ends up spiraling out of control and completely flipping Kaylie's life upside down. Struggling to find herself and navigate relationships, her story is about over-coming abuse, survival, and the merciless powers of a shadowy vampire government called The Council. From there, the story becomes more chaotic as you meet other characters who are tied to Kaylie's journey.
What a ride! One thing I loved about this book is that you never knew what was going to happen next! There was chaos, humor, romance, dysfunction, and just about every other emotion you can think of! The characters grew with the book. The writing grew with the characters. It was all around a fun read and I’m seriously looking forward to the second book in the series!!
The Odeum series represents a labor of love over more than a decade, and it shows in the author's growth, expansion of voice, and approach to the narrative flow, as well as the well-thought-out sci-fi elements.
The story in Odeum revolves around a young woman who falls in with a group of vampires living under her performance arts theater. However, this isn't a retelling of other YA vampire stories. I very much appreciated the true-to-life approach that the author took with the characters: there are no quirky but lovable mortals that the vampires find charming. There are no unrealistic happy endings. And while there are some spice and romance elements, it makes sense to serve the narrative, and not the other way around.
The feel of this story is geared more towards coming-of-age and suspense fans. It should also be reiterated, this is NOT for young adults, and is only related to YA vampire stories on a surface level.
I enjoyed the tale, and how it started to piece together other parts of the larger narrative. Overall, I think this will speak to sci-fi fans the most, followed by anyone who wants to delve into a huge adventure story.
