Practical, applicable, thoughtful- this book helped me generate so many ideas for the upcoming year. I love that she had references, video and lesson examples, resources for further reading. She believes in student choice and exploration while ensuring teachers are set up to assess content. Jennifer Lemmp knows her stuff and it shows.
My level of understanding of math workshop was already beyond what this had to offer. Three stars because it helped me picture different structures and because I liked the suggestions for opening math class. I just wanted more. Good for beginners.
This book is an excellent resource. It walks you through lessons to help you establish mathematical practices in the beginning of the year and then explains the three different structures of daily lessons that can be used for Math Workshop depending on the lesson. Then it goes on to explain Number Talks and their importance, what Guided Math should look like, and how to incorporate Student Reflection. It also includes QR codes that link to videos of the different things she's written about. I can't say enough about this book! I will definitely be referring back to this book often. My only regret is that I didn't have this book when I was a classroom teacher.
This book is great for any teacher who is looking to get started with math workshop. The videos are very enlightening and informative. The process is broken down and walks you through it in a teacher friendly manner. I especially love the 20 day schedule.
Great Book to help someone better understand Guided math. It gives GREAT insight into tangible applications of how to teach math effectively to students who are at various levels of their understanding.
Great resource! I tried implementing Math Workshop at the beginning of this school year, with disastrous results. I had very little training and was not well prepared. After reading Jennifer’s book, I can understand all the mistakes I made, and how I could have avoided them, had I just done some more thorough research. I’m moving to a school in August that uses Math Workshop as its instructional model, and I believe that I am better prepared now to facilitate this method.
