The battle between the Virtues and the Sins gets more intense in this thrilling continuation of the Martyr series. Conviction is suspenseful and exciting, featuring almost wall-to-wall action, as the Virtues find themselves constantly one step behind the Sins in their war for the souls of humanity. It is also achingly heart-wrenching: NONE of the characters you grew to love in the first book are safe!

Do you like kickass female characters? Then you'll LOVE Thorn Rose, a true badass who not only gets her own POV in much of this book, but also gets to allow her rage to take over and CUT LOOSE! But my favorite character in this book is Nicholas Wolfe, who is a complete DICK, but whose suspicions about the Martyrs may wind up being prescient. It's hard to write an authentic unlikeable, but well-meaning character who seems like half the people you know, but Hunton pulls it off. I hope for her sake that Wolfe comes largely from her imagination and isn't based on someone she actually spends time with, but I have my suspicions. Anyone, Wolfe winds up being an extremely intriguing character.

I really like the way this series is progressing. Conviction wraps up the volume's main storyline, but it also leaves a ton of fruit for future installments (something is going on within the ranks of the Sins, and I want to know what it is). The next book in this series can't come soon enough!

Conviction, Book two of the Martyrs series throws you into the events soon after the first book with a bang, and I mean that literally. The new story arc for the series continues to follow Darius Jones and his involvement with The Martyrs, an organization that is fighting against an evil force, the sins, in the world.

MC Hunton's narrative strikes a unique pace between intense, horrifying action scenes and integral character scenes to further drive the audiences connection between her vivid cast of characters. One of my favorite things about her works is that it feels like you're on a roller coaster of events that collide into a finale that you can't stop reading until it's finished. The characters motives are fluid and constantly moving which weaves the developments of them together into a vivid tapestry of story-telling.

This book starts to give you a better understanding of a key character to the series, Thorn. As a reader, I've been waiting for these moments to better understand her motives, perspective, and see how powerful (and more appropriately, resilient) this character is. New to this book is the character Nicholas, whose actions, like so many characters I enjoy, forces you to reflect on the morality of the situations presented and I think will challenge the perceptions of readers into a more complex outlook on the situation.

If you liked the first in this series, you are going to like this installment. I will avidly wait for the third book to release.

‘The Seven Deadly Sins are hell… and they're here on earth’

And I thought it was tough enough to battle my own inner demons!

There’s a section in which Martyr’s hold a semi-theological discussion about sacrifice in regards to their organization’s belief system. While this book is fiction, the characters bring up IRL examples by comparing and contrasting the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita. Just wanna point out that the source material for the Bible’s first half is the Tanakh and the latter’s interpretation should be used. One of the two sacrifices in the Binding of Isaac is about selfless willingness to give up one’s life “for the cause”, similar to how the characters read and understand the Gita.
The below gives a general concept of how the religious texts were explained (I’d also include folk tales):
‘Most religious books and stories were ultimately designed to keep a budding society bound by standard rules and moralities.’
It’s all about the mindset…

Fave quote:
‘Being a Forgotten Sin had its perks’

I’m glad that I read both books in this series.

What I Did Like:
+Although this is a THICK book, it doesn’t feel like it wastes your time on mundane details. Everything felt essential and valuable to the story being told. This is another well edited and well written installment in this series.
+This one picks up where you left off with the first book. Same great characters, same world, and of course same high stakes. I was sucked right back in and enthralled quickly.
+Superb ending, again. I thought I knew what to expect, I prepared myself for it, and then it still shocked me. What a journey!

Who Should Read This One:
-Fans of well written fantasy with deep themes and big casts will love this series (start with Resurrection).
-Dystopian fans, this may not be the kind of book you gravitate toward but I just think you’ll adore it. The strong good vs evil vibes and the cast of characters just work!

My Rating: 5 Stars
Again, I’d have no problem handing this series to ANYONE. It’s well written and superbly readable.

I loved this follow up to book 1 of the Martyrs series. It has a great blend of being fast paced and intense enough that you don’t want to put it down, but focused enough that if you need to walk away from it, you won’t be confused when you pick it back up. The character development is absolutely superb, Thorn is LIFE and I love everything about her (if you like intense, strong women you’ll love her too!). I seriously can’t say enough about the book. If you like fast paced and intense stories with HIGH stakes that still manage to include complex characters and moving relationships, READ THIS SERIES!

I really liked the first book but this sequel was even better. The pacing is great. There is a lot of action but it's balanced by the author's ability to craft complex, genuine characters and give them space to grow.

My sole criticism is the overuse of certain descriptors i.e. "half empty eyes". It doesn't make a whole lot of sense and becomes trite.

Other than that, I eagerly await the next book in this series.

I received a free ARC. This is my honest opinion.

Wow. What a ride and great pickup from Book 1. Hunton’s writing remains so incredibly immersive like there was no time between the first two installments of the series. Her world building still evokes a sense of place that is hard to put in words: the grittiness, the hope, the pain, the joy. I can hardly wait for Book 3 and the continuation of this epic tail.

This book continues the adventure from the first book without feeling like a repeat. It has an X-files type 'what are we up against' vibe, with a George R R Martin lack of plot armor on any of the characters.
