Snowflake Sisters #1

Hideaway at Silver Lake

Rate this book
If you love Jill Shalvis and Lori Wilde, then you won’t want to miss this new novel—and start of a new series, The Snowflake Sisters —by USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Greene, who returns with a poignantly emotional story about the joys—and frustrations—of family, sisters, and self-discovery.
They say there’s no place like home for the holidays...but Poppy McGuire is done with all that! Her sisters are suffocating, and her father hasn’t done anything for himself in years. What she needs is a change—of pace, of heart, of attitude. ...and so she flees to an isolated Wisconsin cabin, determined to get through to a Happy Solo New Year’s. At first, Poppy’s blissful solitude is only interrupted by a few welcome distractions in the form of her hunky, flannel-clad neighbor and his loveable—rather large—dog Bubbles. The weight of responsibilities falls off her shoulders, reigniting a joy in life she’d thought was long gone. And then her sisters track her down—barging in unannounced with their problems and panics and overwhelming need to get Poppy to solve things. But a new year means new changes...it’s time for all these sisters to grow up before their family falls apart. Hideaway at Silver Lake  is Jennifer Greene at her best—characters you can’t help but love, a setting you can’t help but pine for, and the happily ever after we all aspire to find. This novel is a like a warm cup of cocoa, perfect for fans of Debbie Macomber and Jenny Colgan.

Hideaway at Silver Lake by Jennifer Greene is the first book in the new contemporary romance Snowflake Sisters series. The Snowflake Sisters series does seem to be one that will change main characters with each new book with this first book reading fine as a standalone if choosing to do so.

Poppy McGuire has always put everyone else first never making time for herself but now the time has come Poppy just needs a break. Poppy packs up her things and heads an isolated cabin determined to avoid the holiday mayhem with her family.

What Poppy didn’t expect during her time alone was to not be quite so alone when she meets her hunky neighbor. Just as Poppy is getting to know her neighbor and settling in though her sisters show up and start to bring their problems all the way to Poppy’s hideout.

Hideaway at Silver Lake by Jennifer Greene was a great opener to this new romantic Snowflake Sisters series. Who out there couldn’t relate to the main character with sometimes being overwhelmed with everyone else’s needs? I certainly know I could. With likable characters and a glimpse into Poppy’s sisters it seems this will be a series I won’t be able to resist continuing.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I received this book for free, this does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Come hell or high water, she was about to alter the wrong course her life was on.

When Poppy was eleven, her mother died and with an artist father who had his head in the clouds, she took on the responsibility of her two younger sisters, Cam and Marigold. Now in her early thirties, Poppy is tired of still filling the mom role for her sisters and just generally always being the one to step-in and take charge. So, for this Christmas, Poppy rents a cabin a few hours away from her home in Madison, WI, texts and emails her work and sisters letting them know she's fine but wants two weeks to herself. Her sisters are instantly worried and determined to find her but when sparks heat up with the neighbor of the cabin Poppy is staying at, she wants the world to disappear even more and have some alone time with Sam.

“That's my girl.”

Hideaway at Silver Lake is the first in the series about three sisters and starts with Poppy. The majority of the story deals with Poppy wanting a reboot to her life, figuring out that she takes too much on, and learning how to say no. The romance between her and Sam is instant, as soon as Sam sees Poppy, he's pretty much in love. But Sam has been burned before, by his high-school sweetheart who wanted the shiny things in life more than Sam and after working himself to the bone to give them to her, they end up canceling their wedding. Now, three years later, Sam knows what he wants out of life and while he says he's going to take things slow with Poppy, until she learns how to say no and make time for herself, this takes place over two weeks and they don't spend every day of those weeks together.

“Now...I think we should get in trouble. I think getting in a whole lot of trouble would be good for both of us. So I want you to go inside, get a great night's sleep and think about it.”

This had nice moments, Sam calmly and sweetly takes care of Poppy, not overbearingly or controlling, but simply doing the things that need to get done, cleaning her car off for her, cooking, getting her tucked in on the couch to get her to sit down and putting a wine glass in her hand, giving her the taking care of and spoiling she needs. When her sisters show up, uninvited, you'll be frustrated with Poppy that they're not listening to what she wants and chomp at the bit for Poppy sit them down and say what she means. Sam does this a bit for her and then towards the end, Poppy finally explains what she needs and while her sisters are initially hurt, they finally get what she was saying. It just took a while to get there and there was some repetitive feeling as Poppy bemoans how her relationship with her sisters and father has evolved and not changed.

She was mooning after that man.

As this took place in the middle and end of December, there was some nice holiday atmosphere, ice skating, family dinners, decorating, and presents. This was mostly closed door, after kissing and clothes coming off, the door shut, except for a towards the end scene that kept the door open and actually ended up feeling a little out of place for what the tone of the story previously was. I also thought that Poppy and Sam's speech felt odd and not fitting for early to mid-thirties people; a lot of tarnation, honest to Pete, malarkey, and skedaddle. The ending I love you scene didn't hit the mark for me as it included, what felt like adding in a convoluted demonstration by Sam that had money tied to strings but the epilogue ended up providing those feels I look for in romance with a cute proposal. Overall, some sweet and cute, slowing down repetition, characters that felt older than their age, and soft seasonal feels.

Poppy McGuire has had enough. She’s always been the one to take care of her two sisters and their father. She now needs some alone time and she has found the perfect way to get it. She takes a very rare vacation from her job at Christmas time. She desperately wants to break with tradition and celebrate Christmas and New Year’s on her own. She rents a secluded cabin in Wisconsin and settles in for a blissful holiday season.

Of course it’s anything but blissful when her closest neighbor comes around with his huge friendly dog, Bubbles. Sam Cooper is the neighbor and Poppy is more than happy with the handsome distraction. Then, her family finds her and they intrude on her relaxation time.

This book is a delightful escape into Poppy’s world. I found all the characters very likeable, even though there were times I wanted to shake her sisters. LOL The author gave us a charismatic hero and strong, independent heroine. I thought the characters were quite realistic and easy to relate to. Like Poppy, I've found myself wanting to leave everything behind and go on a getaway alone.

The setting is perfect, especially at this time of year. I felt as if I was transported to Wisconsin for a few days while reading this one.

There’s family drama as well as a classic romance. I, also, don’t want to forget Bubbles - the boisterous, happy dog. All of these things are rolled into a cozy, heartwarming romance. I had to rate this one 5 stars - it just left me with those warm, fuzzies feelings.

I hope there will be more books about Poppy’s sisters. I just know they have their own stories to tell.

This is the first book in a new series by Jennifer Greene. Poppy is the oldest of the three sisters and this is her story about finding her happily ever after when she wasn't really looking for it.

Poppy, Cam and Marigold grew up with their dad, a very uncaring parent whose art was more important than this daughters. Their mother died when Poppy was 11 and she became the 'mother' of the family. She took care of her sisters and helped them grow up. As a result of her good care, both sisters seem to have a problem disconnecting from their threesome and rely on Poppy for everything. She is proud of the job she's done raising her sisters along with the stressful job that she has. Right before Christmas, she decides that she needs some time alone. So she rents a cabin, sends a note to her sisters that she is going away for two weeks and moves to an isolated snowy cabin in Wisconsin. Her sisters worry about her as soon as she quits answering texts and phone calls and start to look for her. They just know that Christmas and all of their Christmas rituals won't be the same without her - plus they need her to tell them what to do and when to do it. Poppy is enjoying her alone time and soon meets a local neighbor Sam and his huge and loveable dog Bubbles. She is enjoying her quiet days and getting to know Sam better until her sisters track her down and show up at her door in a panic. What does Poppy have to do to help her sisters become more independent and can she tell them without causing them to be hurt? Sam is perfect for her by the way he takes care of her and helps her get through her dilemma with her sisters.

As the oldest of three sisters, I could identify with Poppy (but to a much lesser degree) and her love and care for her younger sisters. But I could also understand her need for some 'me time' after being there for her family for her entire life. Poppy and Sam made a great couple and I was rooting for them right from the
beginning. The two sisters were very dependent and didn't seem to be able to make any decisions for
themselves. Since this is the first book in a new series, I'm guessing that each book will be about a different sister and we'll be able to see them become independent and happy.

Poppy is a type-A, busy body, people pleaser, but she is constantly suffocated by her sisters. She has always felt pressured to be the responsible "parent" in their lives since losing their mother at young age and their father hasn't done anything for himself (or his daughters) in years.
So Poppy does the only logical thing you can think of to do in her situation: flees to an isolated cabin. She feels that the only possible way to get her sisters to stop depending on her is to essentially "cut them off."
Poppy lets her sisters know she will be gone for a few weeks over Christmas and that she is totally fine but will be unreachable. She just wants a little peace and quiet for a change and to be free of the constant pressure and soul-crushing weight of being the "mom" figure in their lives.

Tropes:
Small town romance
Insta-love
Holiday romance

I want to start out by saying that this one was a doozy. I really struggled getting into this book. The biggest thing that killed it for me was the extremely long chapters. For a book with only 300 pages it felt more like 600. The second biggest thing that made it hard for me was the story felt very repetitive. I'm also not a huge fan of the insta-love trope at all so the connection between the FMC &MMC felt very rushed. There is a big difference between instant attraction and saying you love them in less than 2 weeks knowing them. The premise of this book was enticing but it jut fell flat for me. I am glad I got some resolution at the end of the book.

Thank you to Avon/HarperCollins Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Poppy has always been like a mother to her younger sisters since their mom passed away. She is now at a point in her life where she needs a change and a break from everything. She decides on a getaway for two weeks in a cabin at Silver Lake. Upon arriving she meets Sam and his niece's dog, Bubbles. They have an instant connection. Will Poppy be able to get her sister to understand how she feels and get her life where she wants it to be?

This was a very cute, cozy romance! I loved the story and the relationship between Poppy and Sam. I think this is a great start to a very successful series for Jennifer Greene and I will gladly pick up her next novel!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for my ARC!!

What an enjoyable book! So glad Jennifer Greene is back. It's been too long since her last book. This one is worth the wait.

Sisters. If you have one or more, you can identify with the main character (and her sisters). Poppy needs time to herself--a luxury she hasn't had since her mother died when Poppy was eleven. She's the oldest, she had to take charge. Dad is not in the picture--not because he's gone, he's just not there for the girls. Poppy is driven in her work life, too. At the university, she's in charge of her team and feels responsible for them. It all becomes too much. And she flees.

She hides out from everyone in an idyllic spot, a rented cabin on a lake. Even though she leaves messages (text and email) for her sisters, explaining what she's doing but not where, they are beside themselves with worry and flood her inboxes with caring messages and worries. She even turns off her phone and doesn't check email, at first. Even worse, it's less than 2 weeks until Christmas. Christmas with family is expected. How could she leave? As an oldest myself, it was easy to identify with Poppy. Though I never went through what she did, I could easily see myself in her place.

Enter a concerned neighbor who checks up on the rented cottage. Also an oldest, Sam understands Poppy's dilemma. They both love their siblings but also need space for themselves. Sam has been there, but he "trained" his brothers to respect his space. Poppy understands that it's up to her to demand her sisters respect hers. But it's so hard to do when she loves them so much. They will be hurt (something she doesn't wants to do). Poppy's always been there for them. They depend on her. How can she tell them to back off?

Sam is perfect for her. He understands her. He's an island of calm in her crazy life. This isn't your typical romance story. Yes, that's there too. It's more of a woman finding herself. I love that Sam doesn't give her advice on how to make her sisters leave her alone. He doesn't jump in and rescue her. He knows Poppy has to figure it out for herself. Knowing what to do and doing it are two different things.

Ms. Greene writes a warm-hearted, emotional story. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I'm so glad she's returned to writing. I hope this is the beginning of a series. I'd love to see things from each sister's point of view.

A Christmas story. Love this book, it is sweet and funny, lots of love and laughter. Between four and five.

Poppy McGuire is tired of waiting on people. Christmas is coming fast. Poppy wants and needs a break, just getting away for the last two weeks of Christmas. She rents a small cottage on a lake in northern Wisconsin. She teaches at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Poppy is highly intelligent, excellent in math and science. She is thirty-three.

Poppy's mother died when she was eleven, sisters, Cam eight, Marigold six. Her father, an artist, wandered around lost. This man would not do regular household work, never helped out, could not manage his life. The sisters were children when their mother died. Poppy has to be the little mother and manage the house when she was just a child herself. Now they are grown up, Cam, a sixth grade teacher, Marigold a free spirit. All three of them need to be told to grow up. They are old enough to be in charge of themselves. Poppy needs to learn to say NO!

The characters are all nice, except Poppy's father, a man who can't take care of himself. He sees nothing outside of his life and depends on others to do his jobs.

The little house is quiet, the weather cold, much snow, sleet, a cold, dark, midwestern winter.

Then Poppy meets Sam, who lives in a castle like house. He saw her car, stops to talk to the lady, the two get to know each other. Pappy had no time for romance. Her job and family got in the way.

Then the family found where she was staying and came up bring up so much food, dishes, everything else for a party and a Christmas dinner, the quiet Christmas gone.

Sam and Poppy fall in love. Bubbles, an Irish wolfhound, goes everywhere with Sam, Bubbles is his niece Kristen's dog. She lets her uncle borrow her. Bubbles is a girl dog, very spoiled that helps herself to food not guarded on the table. Not good for dogs.

Sam is mad at the way Poppy's family treat her, especially her father. Poppy goes to meet Sam's family. They all love her. Good woman, make them do their share and more. Sam thinks Poppy's father was abusive.

Poppy will be her own person. Book contains a lot of good sense.

What do you do when you come home from a work trip and souvenirs aren't the only thing you brought back home with you. *cough*covid*cough* You grab your comfiest lounge set, that miraculously matches, a ton of cough drops, a large mug of hot tea, and you cure your ailments with the latest release by Jennifer Greene.

Enough is enough and the lovely Poppy McGuire has decided to put herself first for once. She's messaged everyone and will be spending some time relaxing and reconnecting with herself. I think she makes it an hour before Bubbles and Sam make burst into her life and change everything.

Hideaway at Silver Lake is the perfect way to mend on a very cold January day. Filled with a warm richness, it's a romantic literary salve that will make anyone feel better. Thanks to Avon Publishing for sharing this with me.

Ramblings:
This novel includes a prologue, the main story, an epilogue, and a P.S. section (full of insights, interviews, a recipe for spaghetti ice cream and more).

Reviewer Summary:
Poppy McGuire knows things have to change. She's been working 60 hour weeks, and her family has always been overly reliant on her. So she decides to rent a cabin all to herself for two whole weeks. Weeks she hopes will be full of silence, solitude, and self-discovery. That was the plan...

What Poppy gets instead is more of the same. Her father and siblings track her down and insist they spend Christmas together. It's only when Sam Cooper enters the picture that things really take a turn!

Review:
Hideaway at Silver Lake is the first installment in The Snowflake Sisters series by author Jennifer Greene. Its release date was January 2023.

The first half of the novel includes a lot of word substitutions and odd word choices in order to create imagery. The prose sounds unnatural/not conversational and doesn't flow. For example,
"The sky had just belched out another heap of snow...p.191."

"By noon the roads were all slushy and crushy.p.193"

I did enjoy the snow globe graphics at the beginning of each chapter and the background font highlighting when the hero and heroine were text messaging.

The second half seemed to find its way, but there was still little character development. Overall, the concept was there, but the execution needs improvements.

Book: Hideaway at Silver Lake
Author: Jennifer Greene
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Christmas Romance
Spice Level: 🌶️
Pub Date: January 31st, 2023

We follow Poppy, and overworked scientist, who normally is all about the holidays but this year she just can’t take it. Her sisters are suffocating, the only thing her father cares about are his sculptures and she just needs a change of pace and some space to sort out what she really wants in her life.

Her blissful solitude is interrupted by a hunky, flannel clad neighbor Sam and his loveable dog Bubbles. The stress and overwhelm starts to slowly fade away…

Until her sister track her down with there problems. Will she finally tell her sisters how she’s been feeling and will she finally let her self love and be loved?

This was a cute story, I enjoyed the chemistry between Poppy & Sam. I do prefer more of a slow burn so the beginning of the book moved a little to fast in the relationship department for my liking but everyone likes their stories differently. I loved that we got to see both of their families in different capacities. I loved all the winter activities and the relationships between each set of siblings. I definitely recommend!

This book releases at the end of the month! Don’t forget to check it out!

Have you thought of just running away from the responsibilities of life? Ever want to sneak away for a week or two to ‘just be’? Is your family making you feel claustrophobic?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the questions above, you’ll relate to Poppy. a scientist who for years has felt the overwhelming responsibility of caring for her sisters and a father who is all too happy to just let her take care of things.

Looking to escape, Poppy heads to a cabin on a lake in hopes of some much needed ‘me time’. It is here that she meets neighbor, Sam, and his dog Bubbles.

The majority of the book focuses on the quick-developing relationship between Poppy and Sam. Her sisters, who panic when she doesn’t immediately respond to them, track her down. Poppy must decide to be honest with her family and honest with herself when it comes to a relationship.

The Hideaway at Silver Lake is a fun, quick read. If you’re looking for an enjoyable weekend read, grab this book.

Hideaway at Silver Lake by Jennifer Greene is a funny romantic contemporary novel. A young woman is much needed and used by her family needs a break. Herr sisters realize she's gone and are already planning to locate her. Poppy needs breathing space. A time to figure out herself and to have for herself. She is always saying yes to her family. Poppy is the most responsible woman ever. I found it crazy how much her sisters went into overdrive about her sister having to always be around them. It is an eye opener and screamed crazy from the get-go. However, Poppy deals with her family and owning up to needing some space for herself. But it takes for her sexy neighbor and his big goofy dog, Bubbles to help her find her strength. Overall, I loved the family centered story. I highly recommend it for fans of Susan Mallery and Brenda Novak.

Poppy Montgomery needs a break! For so long she has been everything to her family; stand-in mother, problem solver, care giver, and doer of everything... and she's done. Somewhere along the way started to neglect herself and has finally decided that it's her turn for some TLC... which means dropping everything and taking a spur of the moment vacation.

But her blissful vacation doesn't last too long as her family tracks her down and once again tries to dump their problems on her... but this time she isn't going to be the one solving them! They need to grow up and become responsible adults and she needs to focus on creating a life for herself. Which also involves the handsome stranger next door!

Hideaway at Silver Lake is a heartwarming read that serves as a great reminder that you can be dedicated to your family, but you also need to be dedicated to yourself too. I loved watching Poppy rediscover herself and take a little time to focus on what she wanted for a change. Her story was not only entertaining but uplifting and heartfelt too... definitely an enjoyable first read!! Highly recommend!

Hideaway at Silver Lake is a feel good Christmas love story. Poppy has fled her life for a two-week reset when she meets and falls for Sam. Throw in some mild family drama, a cute small town and large extended families.

What I liked: While instant love isn’t one of my favorite tropes, I’m willing to put personal feelings aside for Christmas. I flew through this one! It’s a quick engaging read and I think a hit for Christmas 2023.

The characters felt real and relatable.

I loved there was no miscommunication - such a refreshing surprise.

What didn’t work for me: I get Poppy’s need to break free from her family but don’t agree with her means or her not just being honest with her family.

The end dragged a bit for me.

Who should read it: You’re a fan of instant-love, romance without miscommunication, small-town Christmas, and mild steam.

Thank you Avon for my gifted arc. This is out

What a delightful story.

Poppy decides she needs time away from her life and family and rents a cabin for a few weeks. I fantasize about doing this all the time so I instantly connected with her.

No sooner does Poppy arrive then she meets Sam and sparks start flying. They’re so cute together and I loved watching their relationship develop. Of course there are some life twists and things don’t go quite as planned but Poppy discovers what she needs going forward to be happier with her life, and of course that includes her future with Sam.

I really enjoyed this story. I felt drawn in from the beginning and I loved the setting. Add some romance and it’s the perfect book to curl up with on a cold, winterty day.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of this book.

When Poppy’s mother passed away, Poppy took over the responsibilities of being a mother to her two younger sisters. Even though Poppy was still a child, she shouldered this job to care for and defend her sister with little to no help from her artist father. Now Poppy is grown, has a job, and is living on her own. Her family still expects her to meet their needs. After years of self-neglect Poppy has become overwhelmed by the obligations to her family. Having a desire for some alone time, Poppy rents a secluded cabin during Christmas vacation. Not telling her family where she is, Poppy gets bombarded with phone calls and texts from her family. Poppy meets Sam and they soon realize they are kindred spirits. With Sam’s help, Poppy strives to put limits on her family. Those who love romance will enjoy reading Hideaway at Silver Lake.

After her mother died, Poppy McGuire acted as surrogate mother to her two younger sisters. Their father was a sculptor and never had much to do with his daughters. Poppy never has time for herself and is tired. She rents a small cottage and plans to spend two weeks trying to figure out what to do. She loves her sisters but they need to stand on their own two feet and not depend on her so much.

The sisters are concerned that Poppy is ill and come to the cottage and take it over. Poppy had met and fell in love with Sam Cooper who lived close by. He sees how exhausted Poppy is and how the sisters don’t see how they have tired her out. He has a talk with them but it takes Poppy to talk with them and lay out exactly how she feels.

Poppy and Sam realize how much they love each other and plan a Christmas wedding.

I liked the premise of this book, busy type-a woman needs a break from life and rents a cabin, meets the local hot guy, and the rest is history. It was more the characters that were drawn in a way that bothered me.

Both Poppy and Sam are in their early 30’s, accomplished professionals in their fields (she’s a scientist and he owns a masonry business), but their actions and vocabulary were similar to new adults. The disparity made it difficult for me to enjoy the book.

I’m sure there are other people who will enjoy it, the scenery is described beautifully and Poppy’s sisters love her.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

Poppy retreated to an isolated cabin to get away from her hectic job and needy family. Sam is surprised to see love gets on at the empty cabin so he checks to make sure the visitor is safe. And the rest as they say is history.

They click because they're so alike. When Poppy's sisters find her and Sam's Dad suffers a medical emergency the idyllic respite they found together comes to an end. Can they make a long distance relationship work? Between the distance, their demanding family and job commitments it's a struggle. You're going to want to read this one. I'm excited for the next book in the series.

Although I received a free ARC eBook. All thoughts and opinions expressed in the review are my own

Did you ever want to run away from all the chaos in your life and just hide out for a few weeks. That is exactly what Poppy does in this new book Hideaway at Silver Lake by Jennifer Greene. Poppy has many people dependent on her, so she escapes to a lake cabin for a few weeks for peace and solitude. But she discovers that you can’t run away from your problems quite that easily – especially during the holidays. Her sisters track her down, but will Poppy finally be able to say no?
Love, laughter, and tears. It will be hard to put this book down once you start reading. So pick up that cocoa and snuggle down for a great seasonal read.
