A brand-new story from USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author L A Cotton, set in the angsty and gritty Darling Hill series.
Celeste Rowe is lucky.
At least, that’s what everyone thinks. Rich, beautiful, and smart, she has it all.
She knows one thing though: the heart is a treacherous thing.
It wants what it wants. You can try to fight it. Ignore it. But in the end, it’ll ruin you.
Zane Washington is doomed.
At least, that’s what it feels like. Poor, cynical, and desperate, he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
He knows one thing though: the heart is a treacherous thing.
It wants what it wants. You can try to resist it. Avoid it. But in the end, it will break you.
On paper, they couldn’t be more different. But Celeste and Zane are about to discover that, sometimes, the very thing you shouldn’t want, is the only thing you need.
And maybe it’s time for love to defy the odds.

So so good. This series is addictive. I loved Celeste and Zanes story. She’s the rich girl with nothing and he’s the poor boy with a lot of love. Be still my beating heart.
This was everything I love. YA. High school with adults themes. This is not a fairytale and had me cheering for the main characters. Through hard times love can strive.
“It doesn't matter. Even if you run, I'll come after you. Always. You're mine now.”
These Defiant Souls is the third installment in the Darling Hill series and follows Harleigh's sister, Celeste, and Nix's best friend, Zane. Celeste has had a crush on Zane since she met him. They come from two different worlds, and Zane hates her because he thinks she has a perfect life and everything she wants. But at the same time, he can't seem to resist her, and the Darling Hill reservoir that separates their homes won't stop their paths from crossing frequently.
I always have a great time reading L.A. Cotton's books, and These Defiant Souls was no exception! I loved Nix and Harleigh's duet, but also the secondary characters that were introduced, and the possible couples that were teased, especially Zane and Celeste, so I really enjoyed their book! It was a captivating, emotional, and angsty read from start to finish!
Both characters have huge hearts! Zane lives with his grandmother and is determined to take care of her to the point of not caring about his future. He is very stubborn and doesn't want anyone's help or pity, especially not Celeste and her wealthy status. But she doesn't have the perfect life he thinks she has. She is lonely and pressured by her controlling mother, and the fact that Zane is mean to her doesn't help. Throughout the story, Celeste grows in confidence and never gives up on Zane because she doesn't care if he comes from the wrong side of the tracks.
Celeste and Zane hooked me from their first interaction. The push and pull between them added a lot of angst and emotions to the story. Zane tried to stay away from Celeste, but you could tell he had feelings for her and cared about her. She never gave up on him and supported him and his grandma, even when he tried to keep her at arm's length. The last few chapters were so adorable, and I love them so much together!
It was great to get more crumbs on Harleigh and Nix, and Zane's grandma was a great addition to the story! I'm so glad the series is continuing, and I can't wait to see what happens next for the characters, especially for Chloe and Nate 👀

"I hate everything you are. But most of all I hate that I want you so fucking much."
Zane and Celeste had intrigued me from the very first moment I met them back in "These dirty lies" and I was craving their story like crazy... They were from different sides of the reservoir... She was rich and he was poor... She had a bright future and he had none... She was sunshine and he was broody and stubborn... But there was something that was drowing them close, even if they were fighting it!!!
"He was the one problem I couldn't solve. And he frustrated me to no end."
This was a lovely, intense and very emotional story... My heart was aching for these two cause both of them, they were fighting to survive in a world that they were fitting completely... Celeste seemed that she had the whole world laid on her feet and since she had money, she was having the perfect life, but her parents' pressure upon her shoulders was too much for her to bare it... Plus, she was very lonely and she was seeking someone to care and wants her... Zane was doomed in this shitty life he was living... There was no point to care about the future... To take care of his grandmother was his only purpose in life... He didn't need any complication and Celeste was exactly that...
"Maybe that was the life I was destined for. A life of propriety and expectation. But I wanted more."{Celeste}
"College wasn't in my future. A life out of The Row wasn't in my future. Not while Grams was still alive and needed me."
Celeste was such a lovely creature... It was a pity that she was so alone... I was so mad with Harleigh of how she was treating her when Celeste had made B's life easier back in time... Also, Celeste had a mad crush for the bad boy from the wrong side and he was treating her like shit, every chance he got... Honestly, I am wondering how she didn't slapped Zane earlier in the book!!! LOL!!! Still, she wasn't backing down easily and I liked her for that reason!!!
"I wanted him. Plain and simple. It didn't matter who he was or where he came from."
Zane was moody and very negative... My heart is aching for these kids that have grown up like that!!! Without goals and aspirations and not because of them, but because the society had lebeled them no worthy of a future!!! Celeste was something great that had happened to him, but he was refusing to accept that reality and he was treating her very badly because he thought that she was spoiled and too perfect in every aspect...
"I'd destroy her. Piece by little piece I would dirty up her soul until the light radiating inside her winked out."
These two gave us many angsty moments in here... Many times, I wanted to slap some sense into this boy and stop him from being an ass to poor Celeste... And many times, I wanted to hug Celeste and give her all my love and tenderness... They were amazing together, even though it took them much time to acknowledge their feelings and act upon them...
"No one got under my skin. No one except her."
Yes, I finally took Zane and Celeste's story, and I was so happy about that!! Still... I am wondering for many other second characters in here and I need their stories desperately!!!! I need Chloe, Nate and Kye's stories!!! But I also need like crazy Max's stoty too!!! He is a very intriguing character!!! Don't you agree???
"Oh God," she breathed. "Not God, sweetheart. The devil, and I'll ruin you given half the chance."
**I received an ARC for the exhange of an honest review**
I’m so happy to be back in this world and to finally see just a what would happen with Zane and Celeste! Holy angst! Zane did NOT make this one easy- so much push, so much tension, so much drama! But sweet Celeste never gave up- and in the end these two have a satisfying but hard fought love!
Wow this story was a lot more emotional than I anticipated especially towards the end! Celeste and Zane’s story is not for the faint of heart because Zane is a wild card and his broken soul adds angst you didn’t see coming!
Celeste and Zane are from two different worlds. Celeste has everything anyone could ever need or that’s what one would think. That’s definitely what Zane thinks and that alone makes her a target for his disdain. Add in the fact that he wants her and it’s a recipe for hate and the juicy things in between!
Celeste and Zane both have battles they are fighting and I loved when things finally came together. If only Celeste can show her parents that the other side isn’t always that bad!
These defiant souls is book 3 in the Darling Hill series and we are back with my favourite boys across the res, Nix, Zane and Kye.
This is Zane and Celeste’s book and I was so excited when this landed on my kindle because this love story has been brewing since the first two books. That being said, as much as I enjoyed it, Zane frustrated the hell out of me with how hot and cold he was blowing. I’m so glad that he finally came to his senses because Zane in the last 15% of the book was my favourite. I wish we’d have been able to see more of that side of him with Celeste.
I loved Grams and all of the side characters. Harleigh also frustrated me this book, she seemed a lot different from her books and I couldn’t put my finger on why but I wasn’t a fan. I loved seeing her and Nix’s relationship grow stronger throughout though.
I can’t wait to see what happens Chloe and Nate and Kye’s books. I’m also hoping Max gets a story.
One of my favourite things about La Cotton’s writing is her ride or die friendship groups. She writes them so well and makes you want to be apart of them and experience that loyalty.
💙Rich girl/poor boy 💙Wrong side of the tracks 💙High school 💙sports romance 💙loyal friendship group
I’ve been dying for Zane and Celeste’s book and this author didn’t disappoint! This was a angst filled emotional journey I absolutely love this series I love the characters the writing is excellent I can’t wait for more in this angsty series Mrs. Cotton has created!
This story, this couple, the attitude, the angst... it was pure perfection!! I loved everything about it.. I despised a few of the characters along the way but everything ended well and that's all that matters. Definitely an L. A. Cotton favorite!!!!! I couldn't put it down, practically read it in one sitting!!
This book had me hooked from the second I picked it up. I absolutely love L.A. Cotton's writing style and I’ve read more than a few of her books but this one is definitely in my top 3 books of hers’. I loved the relationship development between not only the MC's but also Celeste and her family. The tropes are enemies to lovers, high school romance, girl from the right side of the tracks and the boy from the wrong. I mean can you go wrong with these? (FYI 1000% rhetorical) No you can’t.
Celeste and Zane hate each other or at least she wish she did, she has a major crush on him, however, he did truly hate her because he stereotyped her as having a perfect life since she had money which was far from the truth. Celeste had the weight of the world on her shoulders because her parents expected so much from her.
“No one got under my skin. No one except her. But Celeste Rowe was everything I hated. Smart. Beautiful… Rich.”
Celeste is one of our main characters and she deserves all the love in the world. She’s the daughter of rich parents which automatically put her in the crossfire of Zane’s wrath. She was lonely, despite everyone thinking she had all the friends in the world the only friend she had was her half-sister but then she left (for reasons we find out later). All Celeste wanted was to be loved and be able to be with the people she thought of as friends but she wasn’t given this chance because of her privilege and her mother (Excuse my French but what a b*tch).
“I wanted to earn people’s trust, their friendship, and respect. I wanted someone to love me despite all that. Not because of it.”
Now Zane, he doesn’t have an easy life but for much different reasons than Celeste and he never asks for help. The only person he has is his grandmother and she’s sick. His parents left him and now the only person he has left is in pain so he’s spiralling and trying to do everything to save her. He hates that he wants Celeste as much as he does but once he figures out that his love for her means more he eventually (better late then never) plans a huge gesture which warms my heart and wins over hers.
“I hate everything you are, but most of all I hate that I want you so fucking much.”
I cannot recommend this book enough! It is part of a series each book following a different couple in the friend group, you don’t have to read the other books to understand this one however I definitely recommend you do because it’ll give you a better understanding and backstory of the dynamics of their group.
*this ARC was given in exchange for an honest review*
Perfection!!! There is no other word for this book beyond that. LA always has amazing books, but this one, man so good. Zane is this broken boy that doesn’t believe he will ever have more then the Row. He has watched his best friend fall in love with their friend Birdie, though is s true cynic when it comes to that. The only girl he feels he will ever need in his life is his Grams. The woman who has taken care of him all his life and is now struggling with her health. He will do anything for her and refuses help though truly needs it. Celeste Rowe, may come from Old Darling Hills and may be Harleigh’s half-sister, but she is tired of being looked past. The dutiful daughter that has always done as she was told no matter if she really wanted to or not. Celeste is a genius and due to that has been an outsider the whole time she has been in high school. As she tries to find where she fits in she realizes that finding herself may give her new freedom, freedom that her brother Max has always seemed to have.
The push and pull in this book is incredible. You can tell that they are straight fire and will burn up the sky if they manage to get past the valley between them. Celeste just wants to be his friend, even if she feels so much more for him. Zane refuses to allow anyone close. Harleigh is a different story as she grew up in the Row, even if her dad is from Old Darling Hills making her untouchable. It will always be his best friends, Nix and Kye along with Kye’s sister Chloe and Harleigh in his life along with his Grams. Until he starts to see Celeste as so much more. She never sees him as broken and knows how important his Grams is to him. They combust and I am here for all of it! I hope we will get more of this crew as I am not ready to be done with them.
I have a soft spot for unrequited love stories. They break my soul in the best way. This story was double the heartbreak because we not only get an unrequited love from a boy but a sister as well. There's a reason for the sister though, and it's easily fixed.
Zane and Celeste were total opposites. Zane was from the poor side of town with so many responsibilities and demons on his shoulders. Not to mention he had a stubborn streak a mile long. Celeste wanted for nothing... except friends, freedom, and unconditional love. These two weren't meant to be. But soul mates aren't picked, they're created for each other. I absolutely loved these two. Even when Zane was spitting out mean words I still loved him. He just needed that gentle touch to his heart that only Celeste could give him
Celeste though? I cried tears for that girl. She was fighting an uphill battle yet she never gave up. I adored her. She got her sister back, she got the boy, and she got her peace. There were consequences but the end results were worth it.
This was another great book and it makes me excited to see what is in store for the rest of these characters. Bring on some more HEA's!
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review*
LA Cotton brought such a phenomenal book to life! I knew I loved Celeste and Zane from the first few books in the series and I know even more so now that I love them so much!
These Defiant Souls brought so much angst, attitude, and heart. Celeste has such a big heart and truly deserves to live her life how she pleases. Zane is so headstrong and broody that I absolutely love it and swoon! These two both have fights they need to conquer in their life. They may not be from the same side of the reservoir but they definitely have chemistry. As always I love the characters in this world. There were some tormentors that I didn’t like but that adds for a great story.
I love this world, these characters bring so much to the table and I love seeing the growth for each one. I would truly love to see the rest of this group get books and find their happily ever after. I definitely think others should read this book!
You know you have a hit on your hands when you cannot put a book down and read it ONE Day!!! There were so many time in this book I wanted to throw my kindle or wish i can jump in and hit this strong headed and broody boy Zane.. Even Harliegh😳.. Lianna has written an amazing story of Zane and Celeste. Even in the first two books you can see there was something there between them. Never thought their story would be better then it was... Zane is a guy who trust very little people, who live on the wrong side of the reservoir... taking care of his sick grams. Celeste is a wealthy girl who has a big heart and has everything she wants in life... Well looks can be deceiving. Money cannot buy happiness.
These two both have fights they need to conquer in their life. They may not be from the same side of the reservoir but Celeste was under Zane skin. The chemistry they have was there for all to see but Zane fought it. One of the meany times I wanted to hit him. But the story was so well written you could not wait to see how their love unfolds. It had it challenges that was worth the wait. I receive an ARC and this is my honest review.
It’s not often I’m hooked on a book from page 2, maybe by about page 10-15, but I WAS HOOKED BY PAGE 2!! And it only kept getting better! Zane and Celeste’s story was full of angst and emotions. It was a torturous slow burn. These 2 had definite chemistry, but Zane was dead set against letting her in. But Celeste never gave up on trying to tear his walls down. I got beyond frustrated and irritated with Harleigh and how she was treating Celeste. I felt for Celeste throughout the book, she didn’t feel like she belonged anywhere, even with her own sister. But I loved Kye, Clo, and Nate! They were so supportive and knew Zane and Celeste had something special. And oh my gosh! Grams! She was the perfect side character. I loved Zane’s relationship with his gram. This book was so good from beginning to end it grabs you and your hooked. It makes you want to smack Zane and shake sense into him. I loved it!
I was NOT expecting to get hit so hard in the feels with Zane and Celeste's story. Simply AMAZING!
Zane only loves one woman, his grams (understandably, she's awesome) and hates Celeste simply based on her family's wealth (and his assumptions as a result). I really love a good enemies-to-lovers and this did not disappoint!
My poor heart hurt for both of them, Zane carrying the weight of the world and Celeste's loneliness (not quite the right word for what she experiences). You know a book is amazing when you can FEEL what the characters are experiencing.
Loved seeing Celeste light a fire to the plans her parents set out for her and choose her own path. Also loved every second of Zane realizing it was okay to open his heart up and lean on others.
Yep, loved everything about their story!! Dual POV. Revisit characters we love from the first two books. Broody, jealous hero. Innocent, strong heroine. A must read!
I absolutely loved this book. It fits perfectly in the grumpy/sunshine trope in my mind. Zane is just so angry at the world and other than his friends pushes people away. Celeste sees the best in everyone, she wants to help everyone.
Celeste essentially has no friends outside of her sister and her sister's friends. She leads a really lonely life where she is dissed by her peers and her mom makes all decisions regarding her future.
Zane is trying his best to help his grams with her MS. He also has to balance school, football, and work. Celeste starts to get under his skin and he can't help but want to be in her orbit.
I was thrown through so many emotions through out the book. At times I wanted to cry feeling Celeste's loneliness. Other times I wanted to scream at Zane for being so cruel. It really takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride.
This series by L.A. Cotton is a firm favourite of mine. The first two books (plus the novella prequel) have focused on Harleigh and Nix’s journey, and in These Defiant Souls we discover Celeste and Zane’s story.
Celeste and Zane are two very different individuals living on opposite ends of the wealth spectrum, with the Darling Hill reservoir physically separating the homes they reside in – a reservoir that is equivalent to an ocean to some people. One characteristic Celeste and Zane have in common is that their lives are not without struggles, and whilst these struggles are very different, the effect this has on them is very real. I absolutely loved the way in which the author portrayed what the couple faced each and every day. The narrative is perfectly penned using the POVs of both Zane and Celeste which enabled me to gain a greater understanding of their thoughts and feelings as they dealt with their own personal issues. I hated witnessing their difficulties, but I loved seeing their strength and determination. I felt many different emotions throughout the story – which I loved.
Another trait that Zane and Celeste have in common is their caring nature. They each have a huge heart and I loved seeing the pair putting others before themselves – even though some of the choices they make may not be ideal. I could see the joy they find through helping others, and the supporting characters in this novel were perfectly utilised to enable this to happen – especially Miriam.
The emotional turmoil that the leading characters go through make this story a real page turner. This is a fabulous enemies-to-lovers read. I cannot wait for more Darling Hill stories as I’m certain we will find out what happens next for Zane and Celeste as well as for all of those who we have come to know and love throughout this series.
From the outside looking in, Celeste Rowe has everything. She comes from a wealthy family and wants for nothing. However, perceptions can be deceiving. Zane lives on the wrong side of the tracks and trusts no-one but his inner circle and his life revolves around trying to help his ailing grandma who raised him on her own. When these two meet, Zane harbors resentment towards Celeste at everything she has that he never will, yet she is under his skin and he can't help but be drawn into her orbit. I loved the push and pull throughout their story, it immediately drew me in, wanting more and impatiently waiting for their HEA. Another great stand alone addition to this Darling Hill series.
ARC review: Once i started this book i didnt want to put it down. I read this love story as a standalone as i have not read the previous books in the darling hills series but that did not matter i was hooked. I will be reading the whole series now.
The love story between celeste and Zane was a high school romance, enemies to lovers story. It was a rollercoaster of emotions for both Celeste and Zane but worth it in the end. I loved reading about Zanes grams miriam and his love for her with all he did to help her when she struggled with her condition. I am looking forward to reading the remaining books in the darling hills series.
I recommend this book as a standalone but it would be even better if you read the Nix and Harleighs books first
Stubborn, stubborn, stubborn. That is what Zane Washington is. He doesn’t want to let anyone in or to rely on anyone except his Grams. Celeste is smart, kind and has a good heart. All she wants is to give it to Zane but he’s too stubborn to see past his “world.” Can the people in his life finally convince him it’s ok to get help sometimes? LA had me raging, yelling and crying all within a few chapters. But all the feels is her specialty. I love this opposites world she has created and can’t wait to indulge myself in more of it!
We are back in Darling Hill. We are back with Celeste story. Her and Zane actually work really well. This book is emotional for both Zane and Celeste story. We find out why Zane is so grumpy. This story can be read as a standalone but best to read in order.
I like Celeste she has a perfect life on the outside. The inside she is just as lonely as the next person. I feel her mom was a huge part of her life being made to be perfect. Zane was so into the enemies part of the story it seemed he was able to change his ways so quickly. Miriam was my favorite character in the book . She was to cute trying to play matchmaker . I hope Chloe gets a book next . I am interested in hearing Kye story as well.
Oh the angst in this one really sucked me in as I devoured every bit of it. In this one we see Zane and his struggles with abandonment, an ailing grandmother who raised him, and the struggles of living in Darling Row. He has issues with those that seem to have it all because as he fights to survive and help his grandmother as much as he can, he sees others on the rich side of town and thinks there is no way they would ever know what it is like to live like they do on his side. The resentment he has towards those people bleed into his feelings for Celeste and he tends to be harsh towards her and tells her how much she doesn’t belong. As I could see Zane’s point of view and struggles, I still felt like he was off because money doesn’t provide everything, sure they don’t know what it’s like to go without basics, but they don’t have street smarts or the bonds created between friends like the Row kids do, but they come with their own set of standards and issues that makes their lives difficult. Celeste is this sweet genius character who you can’t help but love because she is there for those she cares for, and she is always there for them. Celeste’s life looks like one of luxury to the outside and while she doesn’t struggle financially, she does when it comes to affection and being able to create her own path in life. Her whole life from what she will do, who she will marry, down to classes to take and clothes to wear to decided for her and she has this need to make her own decisions or at least enjoy her life, but her parents dictate it all for the sake of their name and toss money everything. She has a kind soul and deep-down Zane knows this but his hatred for that life is too deep. With Zane’s mother abandoning him and Celeste’s parents’ emotional abandonment you would think they have a lot in common, but Zane can’t seem to let things go and that aggravated me because he was willing to accept Harleigh and Nate. The ups and downs of this story kept me enthralled and my heart ached for them, but a few times I didn’t like Harleigh in this one which was disturbing to me because in her story I loved her character, yet in this one she was so rude and standoffish to Celeste it was awful. I get that she still has her issues with that family, but Celeste became more to her, a friend, a shoulder to cry on, someone who covered for her many times, yet she acted like she was a pariah and couldn’t be dealt with it made me mad. Overall, this story had me in my feelings and I loved the journey these characters took me through.
Angsty and raw with lots of teenage emotion. It's opposites attract at its best.
Zane is a wounded animal, in theory, lashing out at everyone around him, well, everyone except his Grams. His Grams his is entire world, the woman who raised him when his mother left, his father leaving before he was ever born. With his grandmother's failing health Zane isn't looking toward the future knowing he will take care of her the same way she took care of him. With all of his friends soon heading off to college he knows he will be left behind and seeing someone like Celeste who has both parents, money, and a future...he lashes out, over and over and over again. If he only didn't want her while he was also trying to get rid of her maybe he wouldn't feel so terrible.
Celeste's life isn't all roses and sunshine. Money doesn't instantly make everything better, nor does having two parents, they actually have to care. She is alone with no one to really talk to for most of the book and I felt for her numerous times. Celeste is probably the strongest female character I've ever read. As much as Zane tries to bring her down or push her away, she stays strong and never gives up or really inwardly puts herself down. I was constantly in awe of her. Personally I would have walked away numerous times, so I admired her courage to be so strong.
These two were more than grumpy/sunshine...Zane is so full anger, but he doesn't know how to release it except when Celeste is near. She really just wants to help and pretty much can't stay away, which is why she finds herself back in his presence over and over again, and a lot of it isn't the attraction, but the basic need to help another human being.
I was a tad disappointed in some of the people in Celeste's life as the story played out, but as the story came to a close I was happy at how everything turned out. I'll be excited to see who comes next in this series because there are a few possibilities and just like with other Darling Hill characters, I'll need updates on how everyone is doing.
This was another great book by the author and I really need to go back and read more of this series.
Zane was a great character and I loved how much he was protective of his grandma. He was going to do everything he could to get her medicine and do what he could for her and it didn’t matter how many shifts he had to pick up at the mill. He wasn’t planning on going to college as he knew he had to be there for her. He had some abandonment issues due to his mom and that definitely contributed to him not wanting a serious relationship.
Celeste was an amazing character as she was the “perfect” girl seen by everyone but nobody knew how lonely her life had really become. Her mom was absolutely awful and wanted a certain reputation to be upheld and her standards were very high. As Celeste’s younger brother Max began rebelling, more pressure was put in Celeste.
There was so much chemistry and tension between Zane and Celeste that I couldn’t wait to see how things were going to go. I honestly believed at one point that things were going to take a very dark and serious turn but luckily I was wrong. I hated some of the things that Zane said to Celeste when he was continually pushing her away but I knew how afraid he really was.
I loved Zane’s grandma and how much she saw certain things. She didn’t want to burden Zane with the truth about everything but I do believe that he deserved to know. I loved what Celeste did to help her as she knew it was the only way.
I also liked the decision that Celeste’s dad made towards the end as I hope that is able to give Celeste the chance and support that she really needs.
These Defiant Souls is a mesmerizing YA antsy romance - L.A. Cottom somehow always manages to produce not only moving stories but also ones with great depth, they inferable move me to tears, and I have to read them in one sitting, nobody does this type of genre with quite as much grit as this author doe.
The star of this book has to be Zane, our boy from the wrong side of the tracks, who might be a tough nut to crack on the outside but on the inside, he has such a tender heart, his love for his 'Grams' flows off the page in waves of emotion, Zane describes himself as, 'the quiet observer. A silent tempest who hovers on the periphery, and that sums him up perfectly, the girl from the right side of the tracks, Celestine is trying to find out who she really is, is she the perfect daughter, with the perfect grades, on track for medical school, or is that just what she is being moulded into by her wealthy parents, but is Celestine someone completely different, a girl that through her step sister is finally starting to see there may be life outside the bubble she has been living in, her attraction to Zane is strong, but he keeps her at a distance, what does he have to offer a girl like her?, everything if only he opens his eyes to see what is right in front of him, and no matter what side of the tracks you come from, love has no such boundaries.
It is so good to back with the Darling Hill gang for Zane and Celeste's story one that has felt like it has been simmering for ever. I don't know why but I didn't expect this one to hit me as hard emotionally as it did but with the similarities with my life and one of the characters I should have.
At times it was hard to resist the temptation to throw my kindle away. For a large part of the book Zane is the most frustrating character I alternated between wanting to give him a slap and wanting to give him a hug. It felt like he was playing with Celeste and her very obvious feelings for him. Both are very stubborn but in different ways and I couldn't wait to see how it would be resolved. Any preconceptions you may have had about Celeste will be blown away. Most of the time I wanted to be her confidant and for someone to just stop and look and really see her. I enjoyed the two sides of their relationship the friends and the passionate lovers, both aspects were written perfectly. One thing I wasn't expecting was for the author to completely turn me against a much loved character and although they had their reasons it is going to take some hard work on their part to earn my forgiveness... actions speak louder than words. I loved catching up with the previous couples to see where they are all at now. Max is a character that continues to intrigue me and I really hope we get to read his story soon.
This book! Eeeekkkkk 🙌🏻. Lianne is the QUEEN 👑 of angst and Zane and Celeste's story has so much of it. These two are my favourite couple of the series and Zane is up there with Jase, from the Rixon world, for top boyfriend. As Lianne knows that takes some doing to be up there with Jase!
Both Zane and Celeste I really felt for. Both come from different worlds with different problems. Celeste is really lonely and her life isn't what people think who are looking in from the outside. All they see is the money and status from her last name and think every thing is perfect which is as far from the truth as you can get. She is lonely and Zane has awoken feelings inside of her that make her question everything.
Zane is the opposite and has friends but doesn't like to ask for help at all. He isn't very trusting. In walks Celeste and makes him feel things, she gets under his skin and he doesn't like it. Not one bit.
Ohhhhhh this is angsty and a page turner. I couldn't stop reading these two. Even though I did shout at my kindle a few times at Zane 😂 I love how Celeste broke down Zane's walls and he became vulnerable. A special shout out to Grams. I loved her character.
I loved Nix, he and Birdie were just couple goals BUT Zane had my attention, who doesnt love the brooding type 😆 i couldnt wait to get his book!!!
Thankfully the waiting paid off... what i didnt expect was the rush of emotions i felt for Einstein- god did she pull at my heartstrings- i found myself at times shedding a tear for no reason. Lianne really did well, her words sucked me in and i felt everything Celeste and Zane both felt.
What can i say about Zane- i loved his vulnerable side with Grams, she was able to put him in his place- he really adored her but i also loved the angst, bad boy with attitude side too. It didnt matter how hard he tried they both gravitated to eachother. The push and pull, hot as hell chemistry was fire....
Celeste really opened her eyes regarding her mother- Once or twice i wanted to slap Sabrina. Dont ask me why but I found it quite upsetting how lonely and out of place she felt, how pressured and trapped she felt... i was disappointed with Harleigh, i hate how things happened- Celeste needed her.
I look forward to Nate and Chloes story 😉 and wonder if any girl can tame Kye 😆
Overall i loved Celeste and Zanes Story- My boy didnt disappoint!!!!! Cant wait to get the paperback on my shelf...

Wow! Speechless. I’m at at a loss for words. I absolutely loved this story and it is by far my favorite by L.A. Cotton to date!
These Defiant Souls is book 3 in the Darling Hill series and it features our broken boy Zane and smart beautiful girl Celeste.
Zane and Celeste I loved their interactions in the first 2 books of this series. They were the couple I needed next. They’re on the same level as Nix and Birdie. They are the total opposite from each other. He’s broody and stubborn. She’s generally a girl person. She has so much love in her heart even when she shouldn’t. I spent part of my time reading this waiting for her to lash out. She is that good. On paper they don’t go together but damn if they couldn’t be more perfect for each other. She’s what our boy needs. He’s the only one who doesn’t see it. He’s dealing with so much and doesn’t want help. While she refuses to step aside.
Everything about this story… from the cover to the writing was beautiful. L.A. Cotton wrote not only a incredible story but a phenomenal one. This is one I will read over and over. It pulled at my heart strings and I may of shed a few tears. I’m loving this series and these characters.
