M. R. Dattathri is a bilingual novelist, poet, translator, and columnist from Bengaluru, India.
After spending three decades as a senior IT professional in India and the US, he transitioned full-time to literature, publishing in both Kannada and English.
His fiction blends incisive social observation with a global outlook shaped by years spent on two continents. Dattathri’s novels have earned many of Karnataka’s highest honours, including the Masti Prashasti (2019), Book Brahma Novel of the Year (2023), Vardhamana Prashasti (2023), and the Sunanda Belgaokar Award (2024). Two of his books have appeared in Telugu, and his latest English book—What’s Your Price, Mr Shivaswamy?—was released by Penguin Random House India in April 2025.
In addition to five novels, he has published a poetry collection, several volumes of essays, and an acclaimed English edition of poems by Dr H. S. Venkateshamurthy, which he edited. Dattathri lives in Bengaluru, where he advocates for cross-cultural literary exchange.

One Liner: A mellow and introspective read

The book was first published in Kannada as Ondondu Talegu Ondondu Bele in 2022. In 2025, Penguin Random House India released the translated English version (translated by the author himself).

When the author approached me for a review, I was interested in the premise. Though we belong to different cities, the concept felt relatable.

My Thoughts:

Some books manage to feel mild and mellow despite the extensive drama that occurs on the pages. This is one such book. Even with themes strong enough to create OTT situations, the narration keeps it grounded.

It has a highly realistic feel as well, even if some developments appear stereotypical of fictional tales. The characters make their mark in different ways, presenting varied perspectives without forcing the reader to judge or take sides.

Though the book is small (220 pages), it is a slow-paced read. In fact, the first 50-80 pages are very slow and can take a lot of time. This isn’t the book to pick if you want a quick and easy read. However, if you are in the mood for something introspective, give it a go.

this original Kannada novel titled as ' ondondu thalegu ondondu bele' in Kannada. translated by himself.
I already read the Kannada book. but translation was so good that it felt like an original English novel.

the relevance of the story makes it a global book. we all want to build a home ,of our own. what if you buy a flat putting your savings and then the builder is a fraud? what if you already retired and an opportunity knocks your door and you are still in dilemmma.

this novel catches the city life and the problems faced by it's people. especially Bengaluru people.

I must say this is a must read.

ಶಿಷ್ಟತೆ, ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬದುಕಿನ ಬೆಲೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಚೋದನೆಯಿರುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ.

ಓದಬೇಕು ಅಂತಾ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತಾ? ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿಮ್ಮೊಳಗಿನ ನಡತೆ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಿರ್ಣಯಗಳತ್ತ ಒಂದು ಹೊಸ ದೃಷ್ಠಿಕೋಣ ಒದಗಿಸಬಹುದು!

M.R. Dattathri is one of the finest novelists in contemporary Kannada literature. Having previously read three of his novels—each distinct in plot, subject, and characterization—and thoroughly enjoyed them all, I recently delved into 'What’s Your Price, Mr. Shivaswamy?'. Originally published in Kannada in 2022 as ಒಂದೊಂದು ತಲೆಗೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಬೆಲೆ (Ondondu Talegu Ondondu Bele), it was translated into English by Dattathri himself.

Books translated by their own authors have always fascinated me; I often wonder how they manage to suppress the urge to refine their original work and instead focus solely on translation. 'What’s Your Price, Mr. Shivaswamy?' is, to say the least, an impeccable translation. It flows as freely as his Kannada prose, making it accessible to English readers across India and, quite possibly, the world.

The story features a tightly woven plot with remarkable yet lifelike characters. It portrays contemporary Bengaluru in a manner rarely seen in works written solely in English about the city. This gripping yet breezy read can easily be enjoyed in one or two sittings. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to explore contemporary Kannada literature.

A special mention must go to some lines from the book that have been wonderfully rendered from Kannada into English:
- ‘Let life unfold naturally. What joy is there in a fruit forced to ripen?’
- ‘The vessel of family life seemed sturdy, steering him safely through life.’
- ‘Someone who’s listened to the Ramayana all night asks in the morning: What was the relationship between Rama and Rama and Sita?’
- ‘...seven sages of the ‘suddenly conjured’ association.’

ಎಂ ಆರ್ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಕುರಿತು ಕೇಳಿ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದೆ, ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾದ “ಸರ್ಪಭ್ರಮೆ” ಓದಬೇಕೆಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದವನು ಮೊದಲ ಓದಿಗಾಗಿ ಕೈಗೆತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು ಅವರ “ಒಂದೊಂದು ತಲೆಗೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಬೆಲೆ”. ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಓದುಗನ ಆಯ್ಕೆಗೆ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಲೆ ತರುವಂತಹ ತೃಪ್ತಿದಾಯಕ ಓದು.

ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ಘಟನೆಗಳ ಸುತ್ತ ಇಷ್ಟು ಸಶಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ಹೆಣೆದಿರುವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ನಾನು ಇದುವರೆಗೂ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲಲ್ಲದ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಡೆಯುವ ಕತೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಜೋತುಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದವನಿಗೆ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಹೊಸ ಓದಿನ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿತು. ಪ್ರೈವೇಟ್ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ರಾಜಕೀಯತೆ, ಅಧಿಕಾರಶಾಹಿ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆ, ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಜಟಿಲತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲಿಕಿಕೊಂಡ ಪಾತ್ರ ಒಂದೆಡೆ, ಮೂವತ್ತೈದು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಪಬ್ಲಿಕ್ ಸೆಕ್ಟರ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ನಂತರವೂ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಸಹಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಂತು ಅನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತವಾಗಿ ಆ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳ ಭಾಗವಾಗುವ ಪಾತ್ರ ಮತ್ತೊಂದೆಡೆ. ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು ಇಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೇ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ ಬಹುಶಃ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ನನಗೆ ಹಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲವೇನೋ, ೧೦೦ ಪುಟಗಳ ನಂತರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ವಿವಿಧ ಆಯಾಮಗಳೆಡೆ ವಿಷಯಗಳೆಡೆ ಹೊರಳುತ್ತೆ. ಈ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಿರಬೇಕು ಕೊನೆಯ ೧೧೫ ಪುಟಗಳನ್ನ ಒಂದೇ ಬಾರಿ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ, ಕೊನೆಯ ೫೦ ಪುಟಗಳಂತೂ ನಾನು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಹಾತೊರೆಯುವ ಮಾನವೀಯ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನ ತುಡಿಯುವಂತಹ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಲುಗಳು ತುಂಬಿದ್ದವು.

ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಓದುಗರನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುವಂತದ್ದು, ಮನಮುಟ್ಟುವಂತದ್ದು, ಘಾಸಿಗೊಂಡ ಹೃದಯವೊಂದನ್ನು ಮೃದು ಹಸ್ತವೊಂದು ನೇವರಿಸಿ ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಮಾಡುವಂತದ್ದು.

ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದರೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿ.

There’s something quietly compelling about Kannada translations—their realism, their rootedness in the everyday. What's Your Price, Mr. Shivaswamy? is one such book that explores the personal cost of living with a clean conscience.

Mr. Shivaswamy, a retired executive from BEL, is reluctantly pulled out of retirement when the apartment he and his wife were buying in Bangalore gets delayed. With the builder now demanding extra money, financial pressures mount. He takes up a position at a young tech firm—ironically, the same firm that once rejected him for being “unfit”—thanks to the intervention of the company patriarch. His wife has to leave to US for their daughter's pregnancy and Shivaswamy often finds himself in his own company and thoughts.

What unfolds is a portrait of dissonance. Shivaswami is caught between his ideals and the murky realities of office politics. He struggles to navigate the generational power struggle between the controlling founder and his son and daughter-in-law, who are quietly trying to break free from his shadow.

At some point, some of us have felt like misfits—out of sync with the culture of an organization or, more profoundly, misaligned in values with our peers. The novel captures this discomfort with sensitivity. While the narrative moves at its own, often meditative pace, it occasionally digresses into philosophical territory—especially the ashram flashbacks or the zen-like conversations between the elderly characters—which may feel overly introspective for some readers.

The book resists neat resolutions. There is no tidy closure, no heroic arc. Instead, it leans into the moral ambiguity and ethical gray zones that define real life. In that sense, it is more pensive than plot-driven, more reflective than dramatic.

What's Your Price, Mr. Shivaswami? may not offer conventional satisfaction, but it makes you reflect back on your own experiences.

ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿ ಅವರ ಮೊದಲ ಮೂರು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮೇಲೂ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಅದು ಸುಳ್ಳಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ ಕೂಡ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಿಂದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗೆ ಅವರು ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಸರಳ,ಸಹಜ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾಷೆಯ ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಲವಲವಿಕೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಸರಾಗವಾಗಿ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿವೆ. ಅವರ ಹೊಸ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಸಹ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.


ಮೇಲ್ನೋಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕಥೆಯು ತುಂಬಾ ಸರಳ. ನಿವೃತ್ತ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಯೊಬ್ಬರು ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಖಾಸಗಿ ಕಂಪನಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ರಿಯಲ್ ಎಸ್ಟೇಟ್ ಉದ್ಯಮದ ಕರಾಳ ಮುಖಗಳು,ಅಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಆಮಿಷಗಳ ಒಳಸುಳಿಗಳು,ಜನರ ನಡುವೆ ಗುಂಪುಗಾರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಬೆಂಬಲಿಸಿ ಗೊಂದಲಗಳನ್ನುಂಟು ಮಾಡಿ ಟೋಪಿ ಹಾಕುವ ಕಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ವಾಸ್ತವಕ್ಕೆ ತೀರಾ ಸಮೀಪದ ಚಿತ್ರಣವೆಂದು ಊಹಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ದೊಡ್ಡ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ವಹಿವಾಟುಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುವ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಮೇಲಾಟಗಳು, ಅಸೂಯೆ ಮತ್ಸರಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕೇವಲ ವ್ಯಾವಹಾರಿಕ ಪ್ರಪಂಚಕ್ಕೆ ಗಂಟು ಬಿದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸಾರಿಕ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಹಿಡಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗಾಗಿ ಒದ್ದಾಡುವವರನ್ನು ಕಂಡಾಗ ಮರುಕ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ.


ಮೇ��ಿನ ಎರಡು ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಂಬಂಧಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೇ ಇದೊಂದು ಸಾಧಾರಣ ಪ್ರಬಂಧದಂತೆ ಭಾಸವಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಇವೆರಡು ಅಂಶಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಮಾನವ ಜೀವನದ ಹುಡುಕಾಟವನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಸಮರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಲೇಖಕರು. ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಅಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ನಿಯತ್ತು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದರೆ ಅವನ ಮಗನಿಗೆ ತಂದೆ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಅಪ್ಡೇಟ್ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲವೆಂಬ ತಾತ್ಸಾರದ ಮನೋಭಾವಗಳು. ನಾ ಕೊಡೆ ನಾ ಬಿಡೆ ಎಂಬ ಮುಸುಕಿನ ಗುದ್ದಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಆಯುಷ್ಯ ಮುಗಿದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಳೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ತಲೆಮಾರಿನ ನಡುವಿನ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ತಿಕ್ಕಾಟಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಈ ಸಂಘರ್ಷಗಳು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀರುವ ಪ್ರಭಾವಗಳು ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿವೆ. ಹಾಗೆಂದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದು ಸರಿ ಯಾವುದು ತಪ್ಪು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಬೊಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಜೀವನಾನುಭವಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳೆದು ಬಂದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಆಲೋಚನಾಲಹರಿಯನ್ನು ನಿಯಂತ್ರಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿ ಸರಿ ತಪ್ಪುಗಳ ನಿಷ್ಕರ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಓದುಗರ ವಿವೇಚನೆಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.


ತನ್ನದೇ ಅನೇಕ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ, ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ದುರಂತಗಳು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲೋಲಕಲ್ಲೋಲ ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಸ್ಥಿತಪ್ರಜ್ಞರಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಸಂಭಾಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಎಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರ ನನಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಹಿಡಿಸಿತು. ಸಂಸಾರಿಯಾದರೂ ಆ ಇತಿಮಿತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ತಕ್ಕಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ರೂಪಿಸಿದವರು. ಒಂದು ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ "ನಾನೆಷ್ಟು ನನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದೆನೋ ಅವರು ನನ್ನನ್ನೂ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ" ಎಂತಹಾ ತೂಕದ ಮಾತುಗಳು. ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಜೊತೆ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಒಂದಂಶದ ಗೊಡ್ಡು ಆಲೋಚನೆಯ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳದೆ ಅವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಂತೆ ತಾನು ತಂದೆಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಬೆಳೆಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಇವತ್ತು ಇಲ್ಲವೆಂದೇ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಇಂದಿನ ತುರ್ತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು…..


ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ನನಗೆ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ತಾಕಿದ ಘಟನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಗರಹಾವೊಂದನ್ನು ಹರೆಯದ ಹುಡುಗರು ಚಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂದು ನಂತರ ಅದು ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಸರ್ಪಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವುದು. ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ನಾವು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಹೇಳಿದ್ದರೆ ಇಂತಹಾ ಅಭಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಬಹುದಿತ್ತಲ್ಲವೇ? ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ ಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ಸತ್ತ ಸರ್ಪಕ್ಕಲ್ಲ… ನಮಗೆ…. ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರಹೀನರಿಗೆ…..


ರಿಯಲ್ ಎಸ್ಟೇಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರ್ಪೊರೇಟ್ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಥಳುಕು ಬಳುಕುಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ತೆರೆಮರೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಗುದ್ದಾಟಗಳು, ಮನೆಯೆಂಬ ಪುಟ್ಟ ವಿಶ್ವವೊಂದು ಸರಿಯಾದ ವಾತಾವರಣವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಡುವ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಳು ಬಹಳ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಚಿಂತನೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿ ಇಷ್ಟೇ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲು ನನಗೆ ಧೈರ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಪ್ರತಿಬಾರಿಯೂ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಮೌನವೊಂದು ಮನೆಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಮೌನದಲ್ಲಿ ಏಳುವ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಲೌಕಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಅಲೌಕಿಕ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟು ಹಾಕುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಸಾಲುಗಳ ಝಲಕ್ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ನಿಮಗೇ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ….


"ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಮನೆ ಬೇಕು ಆದರೆ ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿ, ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೂ ಮನೆಗೂ ವಿಲೋಮ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿದೆ. ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದಷ್ಟು ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವ ಕುಗ್ಗುತ್ತದೆ"...

"ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಕೊರತೆಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಕೆಲವು ಖಾಯಿಲೆಗಳು ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೋ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಯಥೇಚ್ಚಕ್ಕೂ ರೋಗಗಳಿರಬೇಕು. ಕೆಲವು ಹುಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಕತ್ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ವ್ರಣವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ"....


ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಓದಲೇಬೇಕಾದ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು. ಬಹುಕಾಲ ನೆಲೆನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದ ಕೃತಿ ಇದು. ಅಭಿನಂದನೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಂದನೆಗಳು ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿ ಸರ್…

'What's Your Price, Mr Shivaswamy?' is one of those rare books that manages to be both - well written and deeply personal. As someone familiar with the local context, I was absolutely charmed by this translation of the Kannada novel, Ondondu Talegu Ondondu Bele, by the author himself. The title itself hints at the sharp, witty satire that lies within and the book delivers on all fronts.

The story follows the unassuming Mr. Shivaswamy, a man caught in the chaotic web of bureaucracy and social expectations. Through his misadventures, the author, M.R. Dattathri, masterfully skewers everything from corruption to human greed and the absurdities of daily life. The strength of this novel lies in its characterizations. Shivaswamy is a relatable protagonist and you can't help but root for him as he navigates a world that seems to be conspiring against him. The narrative is so engaging that it's truly unputdownable, pulling you along with its wit and charm.

What makes this book a true delight, especially for anyone who has lived in or visited Bangalore and Karnataka, is the authentic local flavor. The names of places, the cultural references and the subtle nuances of dialogue all feel incredibly real. The self-translation is a standout. The prose is so crisp and seamless that a reader would never guess it wasn't originally written in English. The narrative flows smoothly from one chapter to the next, building to a very satisfying and memorable end that ties everything together perfectly.

While the satire is sharp, there's also a layer of warmth and heart to the story. It's not just about pointing out flaws; it's also a thoughtful commentary on human nature and the value we place on different aspects of life. It makes you laugh out loud in one moment and think introspectively in the next. Highly recommended!

I wanted to read this in kannada, however landed up reading this english copy.

This book is soo good. Current day story line, happening in Bangalore. this covers soo many aspects as part of the story and leaves you hooked to the book.
Human centiments are captured so beautifully.
Buying a house in city like Bangalore, working in IT sector after getting retired from a govt firm, family bondings, business oriented family mindset all these are have so well integrated in the story .

After reading a couple of books of Dattatri I can clearly say, he is now one of my favourite author.

ಈ ಗುಂಪಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದಮೇಲೆ ಹಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯವಾದವು, ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದನಂತರ ಕೆಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡು ಓದಿ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಬರೆದು ಖುಷಿಪಟ್ಟೆ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವು ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾವೆ, ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳರ ಉತ್ತರಾಯಣ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಒಂದಾದರೆ ನಂತರ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿರವರ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು. ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ ಅದರ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿ ರವರ ಬರಹದ ಶೈಲಿ ತುಂಬಾ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಯಿತು. *ಒಂದೊಂದು ತಲೆಗೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಬೆಲೆ* ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ.

ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ಧಾವಲ್, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಆದರ್ಶ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಬಿ.ಇ.ಎಲ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ೩೫ ವರ್ಷ ಕಾಲ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿ ೨ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಮತ್ತೆ ತಾವು ಖಾಸಗಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಎನ್ನುವುಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದವರಾದರೂ ಘಾಜಿಯಾಬಾದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ೩೫ ವರ್ಷವಿದ್ದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನೆಲಸಿ ಖಾಸಗಿ ಕಂಪನಿಗೆ ಓಡಾಡುವಾಗ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಟ್ರಾಫಿಕ್ ಹಾಗು ಮೆಟ್ರೋ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಗಳ ಅನುಭವದಿಂದ ಇಷ್ಟು ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯಿದೆಯೇ ಎಂದು ಹಲವಾರು ಬಾರಿ ಅನಿಸುದ್ದುಂಟು ಆದರೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸಲೇ ಬೇಕಲ್ಲವೆ. ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಕಂಪನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೂ, ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ನೌಕರರಿಗೂ ಹಾಗು ಖಾಸಗೀ ಕಂಪನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನೌಕರರಿಗೂ ತುಂಬಾ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದಕ್ಕೂ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರೋಟೋಕಾಲ್ ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಪ್ರತಿ ದಿನ ತಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಮ್ಯಾನೇಜರ್ ಗೆ ವರದಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಕಟ್ಟುನಿಟ್ಟುಗಳೂ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ,ಕೆಲವು ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾವು ಕೊಡುವ ಸಲಹೆಗಳು ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಸರಿ ಅನಿಸಿದರು ಅದನ್ನು ಮೇಲಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಈಗೋ ಅಡ್ಡ ಬರುವುದೂ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಕೆಲವು ಸಲ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿರುವುದನ್ನೂ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕೆಲವನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿದರೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಕಾರ್ಯರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ತರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮಯ ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದನ್ನೂ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ಬೇಗ ಹೊಂದ��ಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದೂ ಅಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭದ ಮಾತಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೂ ಇದೆಲ್ಲದರ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಅವರ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಹಾಗು ಚಾಣಾಕ್ಷತೆಯಿಂದ ಖಾಸಗೀ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಹೊಂದಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಲ್ಲದೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ನೌಕರರಿಗೂ ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಅವರು ಎದುರಾಗುವ ಪ್ರಸಂಗಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಓದಿಯೇ ಸವಿಯಬೇಕು.

ವಿದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋದ ಮಗನು ಬರುವುದರೊಳಗೆ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿ ಹಣದ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ಮಗನ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೊರಸಕೂಡದೆಂದು ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಲಕ್ಷಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಹಣ ಸುರಿದು ಮನೆ ಖರೀದಿಸಿದರೂ, ಬಿಲ್ಡರ್ ಗಳು ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಹಣ ಕೇಳಿ ಸತಾಯಿಸಿ ಇಕ್ಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ರಿಯಲ್ ಎಸ್ಟೇಟ್ ರವರ ಧಂದೆಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಿ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಲು ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಪನಿಯಲ್��ೂ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲೂ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಎದುರಾಗುವ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರಸಂಗಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗ ದುಖವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ರಿಯಲ್ ಎಸ್ಟೇಟ್ ಧಂದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಈ ನಡುವೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಡೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ. “ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಮನೆ ಬೇಕು ಆದರೆ ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿ, ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೂ ಮನೆಗೂ ವಿಲೋಮ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿದೆ, ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದಷ್ಟು ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವ ಕುಗ್ಗುತ್ತದೆ”. ಹೀಗೆ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ಬಗೆಬಗೆಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ನೀಯತ್ತಿನಿಂದ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ನಮಗೆ ಆದರ್ಶವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸುವ ಮೊದಲು ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಆಳಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿದು ಆತನನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅವರ ನಂಬಿಕೆ.

ತಾನು ಬೆಳಸಿದ ಕಂಪನಿ ತನ್ನ ಆಧೀನದಲ್ಲೇ ಇರಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹಾಗು ತಾವು ಹೇಳಿದ ಹಾಗೆ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಧಾವಲ್ ರವರ ಹಟ ಒಂದು ಕಡೆಯಾದರೆ, ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೋ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಅವರು ಅಪ್ಡೇಟ್ ಆಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ತಮಗೆ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಗಳೇ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ತಂದೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಗನ ಆರೋಪಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು, ಈ ಕಂಪನಿ ನಡೆಸುವ ಜನರು ಶ್ರೀಮಂತರೆ ಇರಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಹಣ ಎಷ್ಟಿದ್ದರೇನು ಲಾಭ, ತಮಗೆ ಸುಖವಿಲ್ಲ, ತಮಗೆ ಬಂಗಲೆ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿರುವುದು ಎಷ್ಟುಜನ? ಒಂದೇ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಮಾತಾನಾಡಲೂ ಆಗದೆ ಒಂಟಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಅರ್ಥವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಹಣ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿದ್ದಷ್ಟು ಸುಖವಿಲ್ಲ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತೆ, ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೇ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮುಖ್ಯ, ತಂದೆ ತಾಯಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುವ ರೀತಿ ಮುಖ್ಯ.

ಕಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಉದ್ಯೋಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಹುದ್ದೆಗೆ ತಲಪುತ್ತಾರೋ? ತಮ್ಮ ಮಗಳ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮರೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಯಿತಾ? ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ನಿ ರೇವತಿ, ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತೇಜೂ, ಸಂಜು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೇನು? ಕಂಪನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಭುದಾಸ್, ಶಾಮಲಾ ಮೆನನ್, ರವಿರಾಜ ರವರ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೇನು? ಮನೆಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳು ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಪರಿಹಾರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೋ? ಧಾವಲ್ ತಮ್ಮ ಜವಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಮಗನಿಗೆ ಒಹಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟರೋ? ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಧಾವಲ್ ರವರ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದರು ಅದರಿಂದ ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಉಪಯೋಗವಾಯಿತಾ? ಕಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಧಾವಲ್ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಕೆಲವು ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳು ಸರಿಯೋ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನೂ ಹಲವು ಪ್ರಸಂಗಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಓದುವುದು ಉತ್ತಮ.

“Each person’s inner world was known only to them. They must illuminate their shadows. They must clear the fog of conflict within their hearts.”

The story is about a retired man who has enough work experience of 30 plus years. It is his journey from a childhood of hardships, growing up in an establishment shelter to working a fulfilling career. However, dilemma arises when he faces financial challenges which leaves him questioning about financial security for later years. He finally gets convinced to accept a corporate job and the main part of the book tells about this journey - the pros and cons, the ups and downs, the funny and the not-so funny incidents, the good, the bad and the ugly!

The story also portrays the intricacies of today’s family dynamics which I feel is done really well.

I absolutely love the translation and now I wish I could read Kannada! The writing is authentic, raw and flowing! You know when you just need to keep reading a book, no matter how long it is, once you start reading it? This is one of those books! No wasted words I would say!

The character development is strong and shows exactly who they are and what they feel. The turn of events showcases vividly the lives of the working class and the struggles they go through until the end with many trying to snatch their hard earned money with empty promises and false hopes. However, how the story ends different readers will have different perspectives I feel. I feel it is how it is as it should be.

I absolutely loved this book. It will remain memorable. The main character stands out as he should have.

I say read stories like this. We have so much to learn from such stories detailing about life in its most honest manner.

Such amazing books by Indian authors remain unread and untouched which I feel is a great injustice. Just pick up this book today.

ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ಕಥೆ, ಕಾದಂಬರಿ, ಲೇಖನಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತ ಬಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಅವರ ಬರಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ನಾವೀನ್ಯ, ಹೊಸ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪ, ವೈಶ್ವಿಕ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ, ದೈನಂದಿನ ಜೀವನದ ಆಗು ಹೋಗುಗಳ ಕೂಲಂಕುಷ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ನನಗೆ ಚಿರ ಪರಿಚಿತ. ಅವರ ಅಲೆಮಾರಿ ಕನಸುಗಳು, ಮಸುಕು ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಹಾದಿ, ತಾರಾಬಾಯಿಯ ಪತ್ರ ಮುಂತಾದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ನಂತರ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಈ ಹೊಸ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ, ಓರ್ವ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ವಲಯದ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾದ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ, ಕಾರಣಾತರಗಳಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಸಾಫ್ಟ್ವೇರ್ ಕಂಪೆನಿಯ HR ವಿಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿ ತೊಳಲಾಡುವ, ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಉನ್ನತ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳಿಂದ ಭೇಷ್ ಎಣಿಸಿಕೂಳ್ಳುವ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಉದ್ಯೋಗಿಯ ಕಥೆ.

ಈ ಎರಡೂ ತರಹದ ಕಂಪೆನಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿ ಪರಿಣತಿ, ಅನುಭವ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಓಘ, ಸ್ಫುರಣ, ಜಾಲ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿಯೇ ಹೊಳೆದಿರಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನನ್ನ ಭಾವನೆ. ಓದಿನ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಚಿತ್ತಾಲರ "ಶಿಕಾರಿ"ಯನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆಯಾಗಿ ಓದುಗರನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುವ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಯೋಚನೆಯ ಒರೆಗೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಹಚ್ಚುವ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ ಕೊಂಡು ಓದಿ.

I found the novel quietly moving and intellectually engaging. It resonated with the anxiety of modern life and the subtle erosion of ideals. While its pace is unhurried, it mirrors real-life dilemmas in a believable, human way.

A scene where Shivaswamy silently weighs his self-respect against financial necessity stands out—it encapsulates the novel’s core tension. Without dramatics, the writing invites the reader into this moral balancing act with great empathy.

This book will appeal to readers of literary fiction who enjoy contemplative narratives, especially those interested in Indian urban life, aging, or ethical conflicts. Fans of writers like Vivek Shanbhag or Jhumpa Lahiri may find it especially rewarding.

The novel isn’t flashy or plot-heavy, which might not suit all readers. However, its strength lies in subtlety, nuance, and a grounded emotional tone that rewards patient reading.

A reflective, elegantly written novel that examines one man’s internal struggle with dignity and grace. It’s as much a social critique as it is a personal journey.

ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ತಾರಾ ಬಾಯಿಯ ಪತ್ರ ಓದಿದ ನನಗೆ ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಷ್ಟು ಇದು ಹಿಡಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಫ್ಲಾಟ್ ಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಅನುಭವಿಸುವ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಫ್ಲಾಟ್ ಕೊಂಡು ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದವರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅರ್ಥ ಆಗುವಂತಹುದು. ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಯಂತವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಜಾಯಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ದುಡಿದ ದುಡ್ಡನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ತಂದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಸೂರಿಗೆ ಸುರಿವ ಜನರು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ದಾವಲ್ ರನ್ನು ಆ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಅವರ ಬದುಕಿನ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿತೆ.
ಧರಮಸ್ತಳ ದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬಾಹುಬಲಿಯನ್ನು ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವಾರ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿನೋಡಿ ಬರೋಣವೆನ್ನಿಸಿದೆ.

Bubbling with equal amount of uneasy fun and pathos, 'What's Your Price, Mr Shivaawamy?' is a satire that's bitingly sharp on one side and touchingly humane on another. A spiritual cousin of 'The Office', this novel starts making its MC grapple with real estate mafias but soon places him in an office where he has to deal with everyday politics, petty manouevres and high expectations of his boss.


Translated into English by the author himself, this novel was originally published in Kannada as Ondondu Talegu Ondondu Bele. It has been effortlessly translated. The spiritual parts of the story meld with the situation when half the story is done. A lot of it is centred around illusion, letting go, control, ego and dominance.


The real estate portion of the story, when the MC doesn't get his flat on time is so close to facts (I have seen a few cases myself) that the author needs to be accoladed for bringing almost 100% of the reality into his story. But the real fun lies in the office. The tense conversations, the insults, the gyaan, it all makes the book and extremely readable one.

ಡಿ.ಟಿ. ಗ್ರೂಪ ಎನ್ನುವ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಇಂಟರ್ವಿವ್ಗೆ ಹೋದ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾವಂತ ಅನನುಭವಿ ಇಂಟರ್ವಿವ್ ಪ್ಯಾನಲ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳುವ ಅಸಂಬದ್ದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವಿವನದ ಅನುಭವದಿಂದ ನೀಡುವ ಮಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಉತ್ತರಗಳು ತುಂಬಾ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿವೆ.

ಡಿಟಿ ಗ್ರೂಪ ಎಂಡಿ ಧಾವಲ್ ಥಕ್ಕರ್ ತಾವು ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಅನನುಭವಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಇಂದಿನ ನೂತನ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾದ ಸಾಫ್ಟ್ವೇರ್ ಎನ್ನುವ ಮಾಯಾ ಲೋಕದೆಡೆಗೆ ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ಯುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಲ್ಲಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸದೆ, ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹ ದಿಂದ ಒಡೆತನವನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಡಲು ಅವರ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಒಪ್ಪುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿ ಕೊಳ್ಳುವಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಫಲರಾಗುವ ಅವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಧಾವಲ್ ಅವರು ಇಂದಿನ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಇದು ಒಂದು ಜನರೇಷನ್ ಗ್ಯಾಪ್ ಎನ್ನುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಿಸಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೀರಿ.

ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಲು ಧಾವಲ್ ಒಬ್ಬ ಹಿರಿಯ ಚಾಣಾಕ್ಷ ಅನುಭವಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಿದ ಡಿಟಿ ಸಾಫ್ಟವೇರ್ ಸಲೂಷನ್ಸ್ ಗ್ರೂಪ್ನ ಏಚ್ಚಾರ್ ಡಿಪಾರ್ಟ್ಮೆಂಟಿನ ಡೈರೆಕ್ಟರ್ ಆಗಿ ನಿಯಮಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಎಂದರೆ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಉಳಿದ ಡೈರೆಕ್ಟರ್ ಗಳು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನೇ ಧಾವಲ್ ಸಲೆಕ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡುವುದು. ಒಬ್ಬ ಅನುಭವಸ್ತ ಹಿರಿಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡರೆ ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಿತು ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಿವನು ಮತ್ತು ತನ್ನ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ದ್ವಂದ್ವಗಳನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಒಬ್ಬ ಅನುಭವಿ ಸಂಗಾತಿ ಸಿಗುವನೆನ್ನುವ ಧಾವಲ್ ರ ನಿರ್ಧಾರದಿಂದ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನದ ಸೆಕೆಂಡ ಇನ್ನಿಂಗ್ಸ ಆರಂಭ ವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಇಂತಹ ಸಂಧಿಗ್ದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಯವರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ರಾಜಕೀಯವನ್ನು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸುವ ರೀತಿ ತುಂಬಾ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯಕರವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದೀರಿ. ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕವಾಗಿ ಎಚ್ಛಾರ ಡಿಪಾರ್ಟಮೆಂಟನ್ನು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಲು ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರಿಗೆ ಅವರ ವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಅನುಭವ ಸಾಕಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಎರಡು ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಘರ್ಷ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಧಿಗ್ಧ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿಯನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸಲು ಮಧ್ಯಮ ವರ್ಗದ ಬಡ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರ ಜೀವನಾನುಭವ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ಬೆಳೆದು ಬಂದ ದಾರಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಸಹಾಯವಾಯಿತು ಎನ್ನುವ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರ ಬಾಲ್ಯ, ಅವರ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ, ನಂತರ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯ ಕೆರೆ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಶಿಷ್ಯರಾದ ಅನುಭವ, ಅಲ್ಲಮ ಪ್ರಭುಗಳ ಅನುಭವದ ವಚನಗಳ ಪಾಠ, ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ನಂತರ ಮಕ್ಕಳೊಂದಿಗಿನ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿತ ಪಾಠ, ಹೀಗೆ ಅನೇಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಸಹಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಅನೇಕ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯಕರ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೆಯಾಗುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತ ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ.

ಇದೆಲ್ಲದ್ದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಧಾವಲ್ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹವನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಿ ಮನಃಪರಿವರ್ತನೆ ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಜೀವನಾನುಭವ ವೇದ್ಯವಾದ ಹಲವು ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಹಾಗು ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದೀರಿ.

ಹಲವು ಕಡೆ ಅವರ ಅನುಭವಿ ನುಡಿಗಳು ತುಂಬಾ ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿವೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರು ಧಾವಲ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಕೊಡಿ ಸರ್ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವಾಗ ಹೇಳಿದ “ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಕೆನ್ನೆಗೆ ಮುತ್ತುಕೊಡಲಾಗದು”….. ಎನ್ನುವ ಡೈಲಾಗ್.

“ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಷ್ಟೇ ಮನೆಯಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಆ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕಿದ್ದಾಗ ಮನೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ”…. ಎನ್ನುವ ವಿಚಾರ. ಇಂತಹ ಪ್ರಭುದ್ದ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ತುಂಬಾ ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣ ವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿವೆ.

ಮನುಷ್ಯ ತನ್ನ ಇಳಿವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಬದುಕಿನ ಕೊಂಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಚಿಕೊಂಡು ನಿರ್ಮೋಹಿಯಾಗಿ ಬದುಕು ಸಾಗಿಸುವ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಧಾವಲ್ ಹಾಗು ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಯವರ ಜೀವನದ ಮುಖೇನ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅರ್ಥವತ್ತಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದೀರಿ.

ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಬಿಲ್ಡರ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಆಫರ್ ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೋ ಅಥವಾ ಸ್ವಾಭಿಮಾನಿಯಾದ ಅವರು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೋ ಎನ್ನುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಧಾವಲ್ ತಮ್ಮ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಾರುಭಾರಾಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಮುಕ್ತರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆಯೇ? ಅದನ್ನು ಅವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹೇಗೆ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸದರು ಎನ್ನುವ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು, ಓದುಗರ ಇಚ್ಛೆಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಅಂತ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೀರಿ.

ಧಾವಲ್ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ ದಿಂದ ತಾವು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಡುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವ ವರೆಗೂ ಅವರ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಮಂಥನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ವಿವರವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರೆ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಅಂತರಂಗದ ಪರಿವರ್ತನೆಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುವ ದ್ವಂದ್ವಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಚಿಂತನೆಗಳು ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಬಹುದಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು. ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ.

ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಬಹಳ ಸಮಯದವರೆಗೂ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾತ್ರ ಗಳು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯುವ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೀರಿ.

ಸಾಯುವ ಮುದುಕ ಮಗನಿಗೆ ಕೇಳಿದನಂತೆ, ಕೂಡಿ ಇಟ್ಟಿರುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂಗಾರದ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಲಿಗ್ರಾಮ ಇದೆ ಯಾವುದು ಬೇಕು ಅಂತ. ಮಗ ಬಂಗಾರದ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ಬೇಕೆಂದನಂತೆ. ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಬೆಲೆ ಇರುವುದು ಬೇಕು. ಬದುಕಿನ ಫಾರ್ಮುಲಾ ಇಷ್ಟೇ. ಅವವೇ ಕರ್ಮಫಲಗಳು. ಯಾವ ರಸ್ತೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದರೂ ಇದು ಇಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.
ಬರೀ ತಥ್ಯದಾರಿ, ಬರೀ ಮಿಥ್ಯದಾರಿ ಎಂದು ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.

ಅತ್ತ ಎಂಬತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತಿರದ ಮುದುಕ ಧಾವಲ್ ತಮ್ಮ ಆಸ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಡಲು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿದ್ದೇಕೆ.? ಅಧಿಕಾರದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಾ?
"ಅಧಿಕಾರದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ರಕ್ತ ಹರಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇದೆ, ಗುರುತಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇಲ್ಲ. ಮತ್ತು ಏರದ್ದು ಕುಡಿತ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಚಲಾಯಿಸಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗದ್ದು ಅಧಿಕಾರವಲ್ಲ. ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಬಿಟ್ಟೋರು ಯಾರು ಇಲ್ಲ. ಕಿತ್ತುಕೊಂಡ್ರೆ ಉಂಟು. ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ರೆ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಅಧಿಕಾರನಾ? ಮಗನಾ? ಅಂತ ಬಂದ್ರೆ ಮೊದಲು ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಆಮೇಲೆ ಮಗ".

ಇತ್ತ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ನೌಕರಿ ಸೇರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದರು ಏನು?

ಎಂ ಆರ್ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿ ಅವರ ಹೊಸ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ- 'ಒಂದೊಂದು ತಲೆಗೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಬೆಲೆ' ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ, ಸರಳ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಣೆದಿರುವ ಕಥಾನಕ. ಕತೆಯೂ ಒಂದೇ ಎಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಸರಳ ರೇಖೆಯಂತೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಬಾರಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸಿರುವ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಮೆಟ್ರೋ ರೈಲಿನಂತೆ.
ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಗಾಝಿಯಾಬಾದ್ ನ BEL ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾದ ನಂತರ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಲು ನಿಶ್ಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಒಂದು ಫ್ಲಾಟ್ ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದು ತಕರಾರಾಗಿ, ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹಣ ಹೊಂದಿಸಲು ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವಾಗಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿಯ ನಂತರವೂ ಒಂದು ಸಾಫ್ಟ್ವೇರ್ ಕಂಪನಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕತೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಂದು ಸ್ವಂತ ಮನೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ನಿವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಬದುಕಿನ ನೆಲೆ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುವ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಒಂದೆಡೆಯಾದರೆ, ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರುವ DT ಗ್ರೂಪ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಆಧಿಪತ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರದ ನೆಲೆಗಾಗಿ ಹವಣಿಸುವ ಕಂಪನಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ ಹಿರಿಯ ಥಾವಲ್ ಮತ್ತು ಮಗ ಕಿರಿಯ ಥಾವಲ್ ಇನ್ನೊಂದೆಡೆ. ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಈ ಎರಡೂ ತಿಕ್ಕಾಟಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದಿನಕಳೆದಂತೆ ಕಂಪನಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ರಾಜಕೀಯದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಧಾವಲ್ ಕುಟುಂಬದವರ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳ ವಿವಿಧ ಪದರಗಳೂ ಅನಾವರಣಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ . ಅದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪಾರ್ಟ್ಮೆಂಟ್ ನ ತಕರಾರುಗಳೂ ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೋ ಸಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ನಿರಿಕ್ಷಿಸದ ದ್ವಂದ್ವಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಒದ್ದಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಮನ ವಚನಗಳು ಸಹಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಅದರಿಂದ ಪಡೆದ ಶಾಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಧಾವಲ್ ಅವರಿಗೂ ದಾಟಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಆ ಶಾಂತಿ ಅವರಿಗೇ ದಕ್ಕುತ್ತದೆಯೇ? ಅಲ್ಲಮನ ವಚನ ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಡೈರಿ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರ ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಕಳೆದುಹೋಗಿರುವುದರ ಮೂಲಕ ,ಅವರ ತಳಮಳಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊನೆಯಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಲೇಖಕರು ಧ್ವನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Another masterpiece from a very talented and versatile writer Dattathri. An "easy-to-read" kind of novel, thanks to some Kanglish usage to promote reading speed. Nonetheless the theme of the novel was kept intact. The picturization of characters plus events is done to perfection to bring out real-life immersion experience. The ease by which Shivaswamy, the main icon of the story, transforms Daval, a corporate head to come out of his personal situation, shows the power of
Shivaswamy's learnings and life lessons. The novel provides the essence of several vachanas of Shri Allama Prabhu, a philosopher, saint & a poet. The author has decoded these vachanas enough to make them easier to understand. The novel soaks the readers with various elements of corporate life, its routines, employment interviews, harassments from real estate builders and their tricks, Daval's appetite for local foods, "mosquito net" analogy to life....the list is endless ; the author has sculpted them to keep the novel close to real world experience. Definitely a "must read". Kudos to the writer Dattathri and his team.

ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರ ಒಂದೊಂದು ತಲೆಗೆ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಬೆಲೆ ನದಿಯ ತಳದಿಂದ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯವಾದ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಮೇಲೆ ತರುವಂತೆ, ಆಳವಾದ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ್ಳನ್ನು ಕಲಕಿ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಕೆದಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಧಾವಲ್ ರವರು ಜೀವನವಿಡೀ ದುಡಿದು ಸಮಾಜದ ಕಣ್ಣಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿರಿವಂತರಾದವರು, ಹತ್ತಾರು ಜನಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಕೊಟ್ಟವರು ಆದರೆ ಜೀವನದ ಸಂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಂಧವ್ಯಗಳ ಬಡತನದಿಂದ ನೊಂದವರು. ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಧ್ಯಮ ವರ್ಗದ ಬಡಪಾಯಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಇಂದಿನ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮಾಜದ ನಿತ್ಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳ ಸುಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿ ಹಾಕಿದೊಂಡವರು ಮತ್ತು ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನಾ ರೀತಿಯ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿಯನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸಿ ಕಲ್ಲಾದವರು. ಇಷ್ಟಾದರೂ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಮಾನವ ಸಿರಿವಂತಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿ ಒಳಗೆ ಕಿರು ಶಾಂತಿಧಾಮವನ್ನು ಕಂಡವರು. ಮರುಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರಿಗಾಗಿ ತೊಳಲುತ್ತಿರುವಂತಿರುವ ಧಾವಲರಿಗೆ, ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ನೀರಿನ ಚಿಲುಮೆಯಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಧಾವಲ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಶಿವಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಬ್ಬರು ಒಂದೊಂದು ಊರುಗಳು. ನಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಯಾವ ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅವರವರಿಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ. ಎರಡು ರಸ್ತೆಗಳು, ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಮ್ಮದು. ಅಥವಾ ಇವೆರೆಡರ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ರಸ್ತೆ ಇದೆಯೇ? ಅಥವಾ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯನ್ನೇ ಮಾಡದಿದ್ದರೆ ?

ಇಂತಹ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರಿಯವರಿಗೆ ಅಭಿನಂದನೆಗಳು. ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಇವರಿಂದ ಇನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಬರಲೆಂದು ಆಶಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Very well written, educational, contemporary, deeply spiritual and balanced book.
The happiness I derived by reading this wonderful book has to be experienced.
We need new age writers like this who introduce sombre kannadigas to the ruthlessness of the business world and to learn how the age old values still are relevant in this modern business world.

I particularly liked what is written in pages 175-176 loosely translated as "Whichever road you take in life, the end result is same for all of us, similar to the probability of getting equal number of heads and tails when we toss a coin hundreds of times!"

At one point, I did not want to finish the book, lest my joy would end!
