The Incendus Letters

Rate this book
To commemorate 80 years since C.S. Lewis' classic satirical novel The Screwtape Letters, The Incendus Letters allows a new generation of readers a glimpse into the perspective of the demons that plague their lives. Follow Maniacus, a maleficent senior demon, as he provides advice to his offspring Incendus, charged with ensuring the condemnation of a human on Earth. Set in the 21st century, Karras uses Lewis' epistolary format to explore the complexities and hidden traps of modern living.
From the personal struggles of temptation, to the continuous trials and tribulations present in various types of relationships, these series of letters act as a mirror for an individual to assess how they can improve their quality of life.
Spiritual or not, this meditation on what it means to be human invites all readers to consider how they can defeat their own demons.

If you have read 'The Screwtape Letters' by C.S. Lewis, then 'The Incendus Letters' by Joshua Karras (published by St Shenouda Press - www.stshenoudapress.com) may seem entirely familiar to you, yet expressing modern issues affecting Christians in the 21st Century. This book is written in the same format of its inspiration being a series of letters. However, the characters have changed. The writer is now Maniacus, a maleficent senior demon, providing advice to his demon son Incendus, who is now responsible for the downfall of his very own human.

While reading this book it felt reminiscent of its inspiratory work. The Screwtape Letters, being one of the reviewers favourite expositions of the difficulties of Christian living - was thoroughly impressed by the contemporary take on modern worldly struggles. Especially detailing the vices of technology, relationships, and the secular landscape of evolving ideologies and the constant need to be “busy”.
I found it to be a vivid illustration of the constant battle of good and evil in a person's mind, body, and soul. Suitable for teens and adults alike, I found this book to be enjoyable and a fairly quick read.

One of the best books by C.S. Lewis was his Screwtape Letters. Joshua Karras continues this legacy by writing a series of letters between a senior and junior demon as they attempt to corrupt a person. Like Lewis, Karras is more interested in human nature than anything else. He does a fantastic job with this.

Second Read Through-
This book was just as phenomenal the second time I read it. The lessons within hit so close to home and allow for so much growth in your spiritual life.

Such a great book.

Original Review-
This book was incredible. It was so applicable to modern life that I felt my spiritual battleground changing as I read it. The original work by Lewis is great, but this modern appropriation is scarily applicable.

I would advise any and all Christians hoping to better their connection with God to read this. There is no possible way to leave without at least one idea in your head changed.

Such a great book. Will definitely be rereading.
