The Flint Coney: A Savory History

Rate this book
A Vehicle City Success Story

The history of Flint's food culture has always been largely overshadowed by the stories of its industries. But the origins and rapid expansion of the number of Macedonian Coney shops in Flint paralleled the explosive growth of the city's automotive industry throughout the twentieth century. Born of an immigrant escaping the war-torn Balkans in the early 1900s who combined his idea for one dish with the skills of butchering and meatpacking experts from Wisconsin and Germany, the simple Flint Coney became an institution among the city's autoworkers, tradespeople, and families. Mainstays such as Flint Original Coney Island, Angelo's, and Atlas were frequented by regular patrons for decades, with others such as Capitol and Starlite carrying on those traditions today.

Genesee County native Dave Liske explores these global origins and the cultural history of the Flint Coney.

A Thorough, Fascinating History!

I've been enjoying the uniquely delicious taste of Flint Coney dogs since moving to Michigan in 1963, but had only heard of its "origins" in conversations. Later, my brother shared an "Angelo's" recipe with ground beef and hot dogs I actually had reprinted in our local weekly newspaper, ha. To understand its true origins and evolution into a favorite meal is gratifying, thanks to the author's deep research and personal knowledge of the subject (and decades of "hands-on research"). An essential read for anyone living in Pure Michigan!

Okay, I'm biased thanks to a favorable mention in Chapter 6, but that notwithstanding this book is an essential historical records that compiles in a rigorous and nuanced manner one of Flint, Michigan's most enduring (and delicious) touchstones. I've been a fan of coney islands for more than 40 years, and I still doubled my knowledge reading Liske's book. It is as dense and compact as a Flint coney!
