New team, new luck? Carter is finally back in the ice rink - but so are his old demons.
The colorful start of a polarizing boy's ice hockey career, for fans of the classic coming of age sports manga genre who also like a little gay romance twist. This first book collects the first three chapters of the free webcomic series filled with both lighthearted fun and serious mental health and LGBT+ issues.

I read part of the original story "Hockey Homo" back in the day before Yaa took it offline to revise it. I don't remember much about it, and my general feeling towards the story was more like.... meh. Since then, I have read a few more stories by Yaa (Goldfisch, Java Bonds) that I liked. That, and the fact that the story is being revised made me extremely curious. And what can I say, CRUSHED!!! is wonderful. The characters are interesting and the story is told in a great way, so I can't wait for volume 2. And the artwork? Super nice. Even the humour (in text and visual form), which I often have problems with in manga/comics, appeals to me here. Despite the humour, CRUSHED!! also has very serious tones that have mostly only been hinted at so far, but according to Yaa, will increase in intensity in the future. And I am so excited!
I personally have no interest in hockey (and I don't usually reach for sports manga/comics), yet this part is so well integrated into the story that I don't feel the need to skip explanations or the like. The sport is wonderfully intertwined with the human interactions and the slice-of-life aspect of the story that it all feels very homogeneous and interesting. For me as a layman, it also seems very well researched.
You can read CRUSHED!! online or, like me, buy a physical copy. The price of 28€ is justified in my eyes. The volume is completely printed in colour, has 350 pages, and is printed in oversize format. Only the typeface is sometimes a bit blurred in print (but that may just be my edition). Despite its size and weight, this book is not hard to read.
(As I always seem to be writing - this book deserves a more proper review but for now a couple of thoughts)
I've been following this series since before the reboot and I adore all of these characters so!! much!! I was so excited when the first volume was released as a physical book n now that it has arrived re-reading the series has made me excited about this series all over again. I really really love the direction Nana Yaa has taken this story -- you can really feel just how much work and research and care has gone into every single detail of this book. I don't follow hockey but this comic not only explains all of the details that I need to understand it... it makes me care 😌
I would absolutely recommend this to graphic novel/comic fans, esp if you're interested at all in sports anime with an emotional punch (https://tapas.io/series/CRUSH3D/info).
