Disclaimer: what you are about to witness is not a review filled with beautiful prose and critical assessment of the manga, author, characters, or anime. This is going to be a gif-filled nightmare if not filled to the brim with terrifying fangirling. This was written in a deranged state by someone who believes she was having a fever dream. So, if you are not looking for that (an unorganised review that looks more like my brain in overdrive and useless drabbles, that is), please skip away. And if I see anyone hating on this in front of me, just remember that I have knives and I will find you.

THIS REVIEW APPLIES FOR THE FULL ANIME + THE MAIN MANGA UP TO CHAPTER 98.

✨ what this series is about ✨

okay, so the short version? basically, imagine there are three very important organisations that are keeping a city safe from intruders and criminals. now one of those belong to the government, so rule it out. but the remaining two? THEY ARE AT CONSTANT WAR. do they work for the same cause? absolutely. do they do their jobs well? yup! are they very, extremely different from one another and hate each other and are always at each others' throats? 100% accurate. are they always pulling prank wars at each other and constantly trying to kill each other? YES. THOUSAND YESES.

are you still with me? because this gets wild(er)!

meet the Armed Detective Agency.

now meet the Port Mafia.

now that we have established their names and given them faces, and we know that the ADA and PM hate each others’ guts, well of course we have to make suffer! because peace is for losers! so, naturally, the writer forces them to band up together to defeat a common enemy and what ensues is a 👀 begrudging temporary alliance 👀 against:

(1) The Guild.

and (2) The Decay of Angels.
(they are not yet animated, and no good photo of them exists, but i can reassure they are very pretty but very annoying!!)

so, bottomline: this manga/anime is basically seeing idiots that you will NOT BE ABLE TO HATE try and ally up with their lifelong enemies to bring down OTHER common enemies, and mostly fail at that which is nothing short of comedic and I don't think it can get more amusing than that, so uh yeah WATCH/READ IT THANKS.

***

now for the long version 🥰✨🥰✨ i will be ranting about my favourite ships and will be giving no context so it is better to ignore this part 😌💝😌💝

let us begin the slightly traumatic dive into the deepest parts of ✨ bungou stray dogs ✨

some would argue this has an official description, and it does, something about characters based on real-life authors/writers having supernatural abilities who fight each other but that sounds a little sane, and we don’t want anything to do with that, so here’s what who it is really about:

SECTION: MAIN CHARACTER (S)

✡ Nakajima Atsushi ✡
- an orphaned furry with ptsd (but who is really just the hugest cinnamon roll you will ever meet)
- is the main character (or tries his best to be)
- is kind to literally anyone (except one, but we’ll come to that later. it’s a gay thing, you guys.)
- i have huge gender envy when it comes to him

✡ Ryūnosuke Akutagawa ✡
- an emo traumatised boy with Major Anger Issues (but who really just wants to be loved and nobody wants to love him - i will forever be mad about that)
- is loyal to a fault.
- is mostly indifferent to everyone but rude to atsushi (see!!! told you it was a gay thing!!!)
- i reiterate: HE IS MAD ALL THE TIME.
- HUGE amounts of gender envy over here, too.

✡ Osamu Dazai ✡

- a lanky suicidal maniac who never had his proper redemption arc
- this guy won’t stop making jokes
- HE JUST WON’T STOP
- (he’s always using everybody around him, never shares his plans, is always in a silly goofy mood, and is basically just an asshole who the fandom likes to make fun of. )
- Very Pretty and Gorgeous and Has Great Plans and Probably Always Saves The Day But Who Cares About That?!
- basically OP, because he knows everything, can best everyone, and therefore he is always
- bored. king of boredom right here (he also participates in various suicide attempts and sings about suicide in his free time, our boy is obsessed, but apparently everyone loves the colour red nowadays.)
- hates pain but wants to do a double suicide with a pretty woman.
- is pretty much in love with his former partner but will never admit it because he’s a little shit.
- pretty boy 💝

✡ Nakahara Chuuya ✡
- PERFECT MAN WHO DOES PERFECT THINGS IN PERFECT WAYS
- WAIST-COAT WEARING GORGEOUS BOY
- WITH HIS CUTE PORKIE PIE HAT
- WINE-LOVING DORK
- SWEARING LIL SWEETHEART
- THE LOVE OF MY LIFE
- MY FAVOURITE
- EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE
- THE PRETTIEST OUT OF THEM ALL
- NOBODY COMPARES
- KING OF CAUSING GENDER ENVY
- insane and deranged (but that's how we like em)
- my highest kin
- The Prettiest™
- Best Martial Artist in Existence.
- enemies to lovers situationship with that loser Dazai: activated.
- DID I MENTION PERFECT
- DID I SAY LOVE OF MY LIFE
- HAVE I SAID BEAUTIFUL PRETTY BOY YET
okay I’ll stop. (but do you guys GET IT YET?!?!)

˗ˏˋ Soukoku / Double Black (1st Gen) ´ˎ˗

basically Osamu Dazai / Nakahara Chuuya. that's it. that's the post. this is the ship that keeps me up at night because it isn't truly canon but is canon enough to show us that it's a possibility. this is the ship that makes me stoop low enough to resort to fanfiction because we don't get nearly enough canon content when it comes to them. their enemies to lovers is immaculate and i am heartbroken that they will never acknowledge it.

˗ˏˋ Shin Soukoku / “New” Double Black (2nd Gen)´ˎ˗

Nakajima Atsushi / Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. these are the two idiots who can’t come to terms with their attraction to each other so they fight off the sexual tension. really ..... they should be better than this.

(do you guys see what we have to go through? THEY ARE SO DRAMATIC! poor villain went kaboom 😔)

SECTION: SIDE CHARACTERS ( + ships )

✡ Kunikida Doppo ✡
- the only normal person in the show
- but not really
- because he has 58+ qualifications for his future partner
- is absolutely always yelling at everyone to do better
- rule-follower
- SCREAM KING
- former math teacher (you see the problem?)
- #savekunikida2k22
- very hot :) (RESPECTFULLY!)

✡ Edogawa Ranpo ✡
- genius detective who can figure you out under a minute
- smartest person in the show but, like, not streetwise!
- main reason literally anything goes on around here
- BUT IS NOT STREET SMART, I REPEAT. CAN'T TAKE HIM ANYWHERE.
- HUGE snacker. man is always eating and will not stop.
- disinterested in just about everything because he’s such a know-it-all.
- narcissistic / arrogant / prideful / you name it. man has every disorder that tells him he’s the best but y’know . . . . nobody actually BLAMES him. UNDERSTANDABLE.
- very pretty! (especially the eyes!)

✡ Edgar Allen Poe ✡
- pretty little fanboy of our guy Ranpo here
- his life's mission is to beat Ranpo in detective work
- but he keeps failing
- AND HE DOESN'T MIND
- it’s a tragedy
- they’re supposed to be rivals but
- love ensues

***

okay, I'm done and that's not to say that these are the only characters in BSD, but I literally just made this review to be self indulgent and give my main ships some queer love, so even though I love the whole cast to my emotionless dark soul and this is the only emotional support anime that can keep me smiling, I will not be elaborating on other characters but also

here is something for you people to be attracted by

this is basically, in its most fundamental form, an enemies to lovers arc between (1) a criminal organisation and (2) an agency that strives to protect people. so, like, do with that information what you will.

also, another thing! LITERALLY EVERYONE IS GAY!

okay, that's it, bye now. not that anyone's actually going to end up reading this, but if you are, let me just say congrats for reaching this far and I agree with you⸺this should have remained in my drafts. and by no means is bungou stray dogs a 5 star read/watch for everyone, and the question the fandom always asks is plot? what plot but I don't really care because I watch it for the characters and if we don't agree I'm very sorry 😔😔

OKAY, BYE. WATCH THE DAMN ANIME, BTW.

I wish more people would read this

Update: I never know how monthly chapters can break heart until I started reading BSD; I really love everything about this.
I hope this arc ends with mot so much losses (and I hope for someone I won’t say his name, just someone that we all love to return somehow… okay ? Okay)

"ABIDE BY YOUR SOUL AND ACCOMPLISH YOUR DEEDS..."

“We are the Decay of the Angel. Five shadows of death upon the heavens. But you […] are no angel.”

Not much happens in this volume, really, but what does happen had me delighted and hooked.

Tachihara is not a character that had, in the previous installments, gotten too much attention and though I didn't mind him it wasn't like I had much of an opinion of him. Well, that has drastically changed with the last couple of volumes, yes, but this one solidified it for me. He passed from being a background character to one whose struggles I really liked and, probably, one of my favorite, current, characters.

Quite a fit, done so fast.

Really, this just seemed to be the volume where all the characters that I had previously dismissed came back from the back works to, at the very least, intrigue me again.

From, who I thought was, a one-of character that was much more of a plot-furthering device than anything that came back to, apparently, do something more; to Juno, who was my least favorite Hunting Dog until this very moment. I have to respect him now, I have no other option.

Overall, it was a much more character-driven chapter than some of the ones we've gotten recently but it was insanely fun and keeps me wanting more and more.

“[…] It means, the angels must suffer. Hence, we are the Decay of the Angel.”

_____________________

I never thought I'll say this but, Tachihara my beloved! He was so cool in this volume.

Also, I never thought we'll see that character again but, well, I'm not complaining.

The path this series is taking continues to blow my mind every time I read a new chapter. Particularly the last chapter of this volume was a jaw dropper. Unfortunately, though, Bungou Stray Dogs feels like it's coming to a close. Each chapter inches closer and closer to a climactic explosion. Tension has been building for the last 7-8 volumes and it's about ready to burst. We're in the endgame, now.

I’ve gained a headache because of the pure chaos. I said to myself “of course there’s vampires, why wouldn’t there be vampires? Everything and anything happens in this bloody story.”

We now have vampires running rampant as well as sadists (who somehow manage to be the least of my concerns), one second I’m wishing death upon a character and the next I’m rooting for them, and not to mention the endless betrayal and bloodshed. We’ve gone from the possibility of civil war to world war and now the threat of world domination has been added in, which I’m sure we’ll lose several characters in the process of stopping it. Many of whom will surely be my favourite characters because why not?

I don’t know how to feel about anything anymore. All I know is that there’s likely carnage approaching and I’ll be pissed off about who dies. 10/10 experience, though! I can’t wait to see how this can possibly get worse for everyone; including myself.

Omfg this guy is such a dick.💀 I'm half impressed by how truly terrifying and undefeatable he is while the other half wants him to get his ass handed to him by literally anyone soooo badly. Like goddamn this series goes so hard in making especially hard as hell bosses?? Lower the difficulty setting already, for fucks sake.

An enemy with a time travelling sword who can attack from the past like absolutely the fuck not my dude.

I loved seeing the agency almost all back together. 🥺 With them going over the enemy's plan and how fucked they are like. I would literally just do what Ranpo said and go home, eat snacks, and then go to bed because all of this is so stressful.

Then people kept getting killed like omg I've had ENOUGH, let's do a beach episode instead.

*This review is for Bungo Stray Dogs as a whole, not just this volume. I will add the same review under every volume.*

BSD is good, but not great. I like the character designs and the art is amazing. But it's way too overhyped in my opinion. There are some things I didn't like or found pretty dumb.

1. Everyone is a genius syndrome: 10 characters or even more have an insanely high IQ. if everyone is a chess god playing mind games, then nobody actually is. At some point it stops being 'clever' and starts being exhausting. Like let someone actually miscalculate ONCE without it being part of some bigger plan. BSD intelligence is stylized, exaggerated, plot driven, "genius aura", and characters know things because the story says so. So when someone says "Dazai has an IQ of 200" That number means basically nothing. Just "Please believe he is very smart." Same with Ranpo. An IQ of 200+ is not even useful in real world context. Authors use it like a power level. I prefer characters with realistic intelligence. Because they could exist, you could meet them, and you wouldn’t realize what they're doing until it’s too late. That’s way scarier than an IQ stat pulled from someone’s ass. Actually, where do BSD IQ numbers even COME from?? Asagiri did not run these characters through a Wechsler test. There is no in universe scene where Dazai sits down with a psychologist, Mori hands out scantrons, or Ranpo speedruns Mensa. IQ in BSD functions like "This character is very smart, please clap." Dazai's IQ is 200, Fyodor's is 200 (people argue about Dazai's and Fyodor's IQ, but I really don't care if it's 200 or 215), Ranpo's is 215, Mori's is 175+, Ango's is 170+, a lot of people say Chuuya's is also secretly 150+. So what does "smart" even mean anymore? It becomes a badge, a hierarchy, a fandom flex instead of a special skill/trait and something demonstrated. If everyone is a genius, no one is. There’s no contrast.

2. plot armor thicker than concrete: some characters should’ve been dead five arcs ago. I don't actually mind the plot armor that much, but sometimes it's a bit ridiculous. It gets a bit annoying when every loss is secretly a win in disguise.

3. Fake ugliness: This is the one that bothers me the most. BSD talks about the dark, ugly sides of humanity but then makes them hot, tragic, romantic, and conveniently justified. That’s not ugliness that’s aestheticized suffering. BSD wants to say "Look how ugly and broken humans are." But everyone is hot, everyone is exceptional, everyone has poetic trauma. So the ugliness is symbolic, sanitized, controlled. It’s shown from a distance. The characters are extremely competent, hyper talented, admired by the narrative, rarely truly powerless. They’re bad at living in a romantic way.

4. The female characters are badly written: not necessarily offensively bad but thin. They’re underdeveloped compared to the men, their trauma is glossed over, they rarely drive the plot in a way that isn’t immediately overshadowed, and when they are competent the narrative doesn’t linger on their inner world the same way it does with the guys. Meanwhile the male cast gets internal monologues, philosophy dumps, elaborate mind games and mythologized suffering.

5. The tragic backstory inflation: people don't like when someone complains about this, and I think all the backstories are interesting, but practically every character has the most insane past ever. Everybody’s parents are dead, abused, betrayed, experimented on, orphaned, shot, drowned, and emotionally obliterated. What bothers me is that for a lot of characters (especially female ones) we get a tragic past, one flashback, maybe one emotional speech, and then it’s never meaningfully addressed again. No long-term consequences, no behavioral patterns that actually complicate the plot, no messy coping, regression, or contradictions. It’s always maximum suffering, minimum specificity. Abuse. Experiments. Dead family. Betrayal. Rinse, repeat. Nuanced backstories would be things like loving parents who still fucked you up unintentionally, doing something morally wrong by choice and having to live with it, being privileged but empty, being loyal to the wrong people for too long, slow corruption instead of "one horrific event", failure without a villain to blame. BSD almost never does that. It prefers "Something horrible happened TO me" instead of "I made a decision that shaped who I became." And that’s why it all feels glamorized. If the character is a victim of extreme circumstances, the narrative can always go "see? not their fault." Nobody has to sit in the discomfort of agency. That’s also why characters like Dazai get sanitized by the fandom. If his past is framed as 'he was broken and saved" then people can pretend he was secretly good all along when the whole point should’ve been that he’s functional, charming, and still morally fcked. BSD could have been so much stronger if it trusted quieter uglier human flaws instead of trauma shock value. Less "experimented on as a child" and more "I chose wrong and kept choosing wrong."

6. The characters are not relatable: You always see many people being like "I kin Dazai" but in my opinion, they are not relatable at all. BSD characters don’t feel like people, they feel like concepts wearing drip. The constant galaxy brain IQ, hyper optimized trauma, perfectly timed suffering, flawless execution of plans…creates distance. You’re not watching someone LIVE, you’re watching someone perform a role the author assigned them. Real people misread situations, act out of insecurity, get lucky instead of smart, regret things that weren’t "necessary", fail in boring embarrassing ways. BSD characters almost never do that. Even their breakdowns are aesthetic. Even their mistakes are "actually part of the plan." That kills relatability HARD. You can always relate in theory. But it’s surface level "I relate to their trauma" or "I relate to feeling lost" and not "I recognize this person’s thought process" or "I’ve made that exact dumb choice" That’s why they feel unreal. It also ties back to the IQ thing. When everyone’s a genius the story stops being about human limitations. You can’t project yourself into someone who’s always five steps ahead, because most of us are just trying to survive step one without tripping over our own shoelaces. BSD wants you to admire its characters.
It rarely lets you recognize yourself in them.

7. Sometimes the story also can be straight up boring. Not all the time, but enough that you start checking how many chapters are left like "okay… are we done cooking or what?" To me, early arcs were meh, middle arcs slapped, later arcs felt like Asagiri just kept stacking twists because of escalation addiction.

BSD’s biggest crime is that it pretends to be deeper than it is. It wants to be profound, literary, morally complex, but it rarely commits to letting characters genuinely fail, rot or face consequences. It’s not bad. It’s just overhyped. Dazai especially feels more like a concept and less like a person. Everything in BSD is so glamourized. It refuses to make anything actually genuinely uncomfortable. Nobody is allowed to be truly pathetic, cruel, or wrong without the story going "actually, this was all justified." Like. Let someone be ugly and stay ugly. Also the overhyping of characters is wild. The fandom treats them like they’re the most complex beings ever written when half their personality is: smart, sad, hot, morally ambiguous (but not really). Everyone likes something different, of course, but instead of epic despair, operatic suffering, genius masterminds above consequence, I prefer just people being messy. So yeah. BSD isn’t trash. But it’s not the literary holy text people act like it is. It’s a stylish, sometimes fun, sometimes frustrating series that thinks it’s deeper than it actually commits to being. It's interesting, dramatic, fun at times. But relatable? Grounded? Human? Nah.

Important: If anyone ever reads this, don't take this review too seriously. I was just bored and decided to write a long review. Nothing against BSD or people who enjoy it. I actually used to be a huge BSD fan from like 2020 to 2024. And I glazed it a LOT, so I know how much people in the fandom exaggerate. I would give it 2 or 3 stars for how enjoyable it had been for me. The time in the fandom had been fun, but the story and characters itself are not something I like that much.
