Unlike his brother SJ who wants to run things for their dad, or Mihalis who looks like he's about to stake his own claim on an outlaw city, Troy Valens just wants to have a good time. Having developed a well deserved reputation for partying, playing pranks, telling jokes and being something of a 'class clown', he's come to a point in his life when he realized that he needed to prove that he could be taken seriously.
After a bit of bowing and scraping, last year he convinced his father to let him join the scouts who patrol the Demon Exclusion Zone, and in that last year he's more than proven that there is one thing he does take seriously: his job. He's become so good at it in fact that when his brother SJ starts to worry about the possibility that djevels are getting out, Troy is the one who gets handed the task of finding them.
However in the middle of all of this, a joke Mihalis decided to play on him has turned into something that's not a joke at all. Something that has definitely gone beyond his control and suddenly Troy has found himself with a lot more responsibilities than he ever meant to have. For someone who's supposed to be as shallow as a mud puddle when it came to the opposite sex, he's finding that he's a lot deeper than even he thought as he struggles to balance these new responsibilities with the job his brother needs him to do.
No matter the outcome, life is never going to be the same for him, and it's starting to look like that's a good thing.
WARNING: "Troy" is definitely not for the faint of heart because have you seen how fast that sucker can run? You can't do that with a faint heart! Seriously! You'll kill yourself! Yes, there are references to *gasp* sex in this story. There's even references to (dare I say it!) marriage! Oh noes! Run for your lives! It's about growing up and taking responsibility, the one thing that's kryptonite to jokers everywhere! Oh, and if you just happen to be driving through the deserts of Nevada and see some guy babbling about two brothers and some 'game' they're playing? Don't stop.
I'm new to the Harem / LitRPG thing (If I'd known more about LitRPG when I wrote Shadow, I might have incorporated more elements of that into it). I have a FT job, so I work on this when I can. Hopefully the next one will be even better. https://stryvant.blogspot.com/
Pretty good As good as Be of Good Cheer, better than SJ. Nice action to 'romance' balance. The plot had a good structure with twists & turns that were not telegraphed form last week. The amount of insta-love is perfectly in keeping with all harem novels and unremarkable here. I only have two gripes with an otherwise pretty good book. The amount of sexual assault against women in this book was too damn high. It makes me uncomfortable when you talk about rape casually with the victim and then the book cuts to a sex scene. #2. Picking on hippies is a cheep shot. That's almost the textbook definition of punching down. Here's a clue: If the guy is (a.) Drunk and (b.) an asshole, he's not a hippie, he's a drunk asshole. If he were stoned, clueless, and means well, then you could be at least in the right neighborhood.
It kind of amazes me that an author who took 17 books to tell the first part of this story, taking his time to introduce the world and characters, and let the story and relationships unfold at a natural pace, is struggling so hard with this series. He had the tried-and-tested formula for success with these books, but for some reason, he's trying to rush with these novels.
By rush, I don't mean the overarching story, as there doesn't really seem to be one of those. Instead, I mean the personal story of the main characters. In each book the author is trying to accomplish for each protagonist what it took Sean Senior 10+ books to accomplish. None of the characters are getting the care and attention needed to flesh them out as real characters, and as a result, I don't care about them at all. Without characters to care for, there's not much hooking me into these stories.
So far, I have kept reading for 2 reasons:
1. The Valens legacy was a lot of fun, and I am attached to this world and the characters from that series.
2. Mihalis at least has the potential to be interesting. He has new powers to explore and an actual story that is kind of interesting, as he plans to take over Barter Town.
Outside of those two reasons, this series is failing hard for this reader. Sean and Troy are bland and featureless characters, as are the many wives they have taken for themselves and the story they are part of. Like SJ, this book was tedious to read and instantly forgettable as soon as the book came to a close.
I'm giving it 2 stars because, at the least, I enjoy being in this world that the Valens Legacy started. However, I'm not sure how much longer that statement will remain true as this series progresses.
This is the first book in the series that features Troy. Troy is Roxy's second son and he is a Cheetah shifter. The interesting thing about Troy is that as the book progresses, Troy is beginning to realize that he has some talents - Lion talents -that he really shouldn't have as a Cheetah shifter. But, he IS a Valens, so that pretty much means all bets are off when it comes to the Valens family.
One thing that DID bother me a little more than normal with this book was the crazy amount of Insta-Love in this book. To be honest, all of the books pretty much have some form of Insta-Love (it just seems to be the norm) but this took it way beyond the pail. Troy goes from a carefree single guy to a married man with 4 wives pretty much overnight, with women that he really just all met that week. I mean, I really am willing to go along with a lot, but this one was hard to swallow.
Other than that, Troy seems like a nice guy. He is really trying to overcome his reputation as a prankster and trying to make a difference in his job as a scout. He is intelligent and is responsible for discovering some very vital information of the enemy movements. If there is one thing that was good about his new instant family, it was that he just created a new "Team" that can help him with the new issues that are developing because of his investigation. He even now has Healy, his very own pilot (wife) and will be getting a new helicopter as a gift from one of his moms. Now that is a great wedding present that can take his new "team" with him wherever he needs to go :)
Honestly I like all the valens books, but this one takes the top spot after reading it at least in the giggles dept. I honestly haven't laughed as hard reading in a while. And all of it thanks to the fact that the characters are as lovable as always and the humour comes from love, mostly.
I'm writing this review only for the authors sake so he gets more exposure, because if you got here any other way but an accident you already know what to expect. And if you didn't, the book you're looking for next is "The Valens Legacy" and come back here 20'odd books heavier :)
Nothing like a Batchelor who swore off marriage finding 4 beautiful women to marry. Well, another Valen's son is going to have a pride.
Troy's job, given by his father and brother, is to find out how the demons are spreading beyond their locked in walls. Then he needs to do all he can to stop them.
This was another great read that I never lost interest in throughout the entire story. Each book builds on the different brothers within the same timeline, but from different points of view. It is written so very well with sex written, but in a tasteful way.
The book was shorter than I would have liked, as I finished it in only 4 or 5 hours and I’m not a fast reader. It may have assisted that I’m sick with COVID and spent most of today in bed reading. Really enjoying these Valens books, and the romantic entanglements that Sean’s kids seem to quickly pile up are entertaining, moving and a bit sexual. This story meshes well with the overall storyline that started with the new series and contributes more content. Really enjoyable and a good read.
Another great Valen’s book! Troy is the cut up, the black sheep, the prankster. But when it comes to his job as a scout he is deadly serious. Join the Valen’s family once more in their endless struggle against the djevels. And enjoy the saga of Troy as he grows up, takes on serious responsibilities, developed new powers, and starts his very own pride because even though he is a cheetah, seems he has inherited more than anyone ever realized from his dad Sean.
Among the three valens brothers stories that have been written so far, I kind of enjoyed troy the most. Sure its not as varied or complex a story as mihalis or as standard hero story as SJ, but theres always something about underdog stories i like. After all, troy was their mischevious and irresponsible child. To suddenly change for the better always gets me. This also sort of rounds of the mystery as to how the demons have been smuggling good in and out of the demon zone. Hope to read more of troy.
Jan Stryvant has done it again. The Valens Heritage is beyond awesome, you get the opportunity to learn about Sean's kids and the lives they lead. Troy has always been one of the kids that maks me laugh and finally getting to know him has be great. Especially since he's not lion (?) and you get to see how he's developing into a great man. If you haven't read the Valens legacy books you need too. Great characters to love and then continue to love, and then you read the Heritage books and love this series even more.
This book continues the stories of the Valens’ kids.
This one OBVIOUSLY focuses on Troy who is Roxy’s boy. He finds himself settling down and changing jobs in the long run.
This story was fun to see him progress into an adult.
The action and adventure and “trouble” he gets himself into is just as fun to witness!
The spicy scenes are kind of stagnant at this point as all the girls seem to say the same thing. The imagination of it seems to have been lacking by these books.
Overall though the story was enjoyable to listen to and if you like action/adventure mixed with sci-fi, fantasy and some romance mixed in then this is for you
I think that this author cannot write a bad story. There's always so much action and the characters are enjoyable and engaging. The adventures at the characters get into are some are very funny some are harrowing and some are just plain fun to read about. For me it is nice to read the different viewpoints of the characters and what happens to them in more detail in each book. I am looking forward to reading more and can hardly wait.
Ill start with if you haven't read this story or series, why not??? Personally I've enjoyed every story this author has written but thus one is really the best so far!!! Great action both the adult firm and the adventure variety!!!! You seriously won't be disappointed!!!! I couldn't put it down once I started, yes its that good!!!
Absolutely loved this book the type of book that made you fall in love reading in the first place it takes you and let’s you escape you stay up late reading and sneak in reading in reading every chance you get and then it ends and your sad because nothing else makes you want to read like these books
The author is having way too much fun messing with Sean's children in this book series. I love how let's life reach out and slap Troy the joker up side the head and cut him off him off at his playa knees. Looking forward to next book in the series.
With a devious mind, Troy suddenly finds himself in a position he never expected. How Jan is keeping the multitude of characters straight and unique is beyond belief. With magic, weres, combat and of course plenty of sex, this is a great addition to the Valens family structure.
This series and universe have captivated me for years. I read the blurb of this one and didn't think I'd like it but was willing to give it a shot and thank God I did. I like the first few more than this but that's not an insult to this it's praise for the first 3
Every book keeps me entertained from start to finish. Never feels bogged down but still manages to make characters feel fleshed out and the world alive. Exploring Troy's shenanigans and 'coming of age' was a lot of fun and I'm excited to see how he develops as a character.
Urban fantasy harem adult situations The story is well written and a quick read. Minimal editing errors. New characters are distinct and likeable. Fun, and better if you've already read the previous books because the family is huge. Handy family chart at the end. Ready for book 5 in this spin off series.
I have been really enjoying the Valens Heritage series. It is interesting to see the different lifestyles of the kids and continuing the fight against the djevels. I look forward to the next book.
It's amazing how fast a good woman can change you. I love how the sneaky-speedy Troy's world changed throughout the book. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book. I don't think politics will ever be the same again.😁
Love the new and old characters, couldn't tear away from the story and cannot wait for the next book! Honestly keep getting amazed at the overall quality of the Author's work and hope he finds the fountain of youth so he can keep on writing :D
Excellent addition to the Heritage series. I already liked Troy from his brother’s stories. It was enjoyable to read one with him as the mc. I look forward to more about him and his wives.
Another great book in the Valens universe, really enjoying the different viewpoints with the latest books. As always great writing, world building and plot lines. Fingers crossed for many more to come.
In all the years I’ve been reading his books, I have never left a review. I felt compelled to this time because I wanted to convey how much I enjoy them and look forward to the next.
I wasn’t sure how a series based on the children of the original Valens series was going to work out, but any doubts are gone. Good storytelling, great plots and fun characters! Looking forward to where this all goes.
Ok so this wasn't a bad read at all. I highly recommend it. But it is kind of hard to keep everything straight. Because all of the books are taking place at the same time. Just from different perspectives . I think you will enjoy it. I did !!!
I have really enjoyed this series so far. The author has developed all these characters to give the series nice cohesion between the books, he is a great story teller and for me that is tantamount. Love it, keep up the great story line!!!
