The honorable dragon, Kindle, wants for nothing than to listen to fairy gossip and find a nice cave where he can laze his days away. When his father meets an untimely end by a spiteful unicorn, Kindle inherits his cave and all the gold that comes with it. He is also gifted with a female sacrifice every year. Not having a taste for human flesh Kindle discards the women to a neighboring island until one year he receives a feisty, golden haired beauty named Lyra. Kindle is immediately smitten and soon their unique friendship becomes an unbreakable bond. Her sunny attitude and spirited sass create emotions within Kindle that he doesn’t understand. Before he can figure out his strange feelings for her, his father’s killer resurfaces and curses Kindle to human form. Kindle and Lyra manage to escape to the safety of the island where Kindle learns the dark secrets of his father’s past. The more he uncovers the more he realizes there’s two sides to every story and perhaps his father wasn’t the innocent he once believed. When he finds holes in his own back story, Kindle relies of the townsfolk to help him piece his past together. Now living as a human he’s just trying to make sense in a nonsensical world - Uncovering the secrets of his origins. - Finding a way to return to his true form - Preventing Lyra from marrying long enough to figure out his own feelings - Trying to learn the human world without killing anyone, himself included - And plotting the eventual demise of that damn unicorn. What’s a dragonman to do?
Carina Scott is a fantasy author who got her bachelor's in mass communication with a Concentration in Journalism and disliked it so much she graduated with an obsession of writing all things fiction. She works at a library surrounded by infinite inspiration and entertainment. She loves reading fantasy, historical romance and romcoms. When she’s not creating new characters and stories she likes to paint, hike, and journal. She lives in the impossibly humid state of North Carolina with her gamer husband and daughter who is an aspiring fairy. I received a free copy of this book as a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
I came to this book very curious and intrigued because the plot sounded so unique. In the end, my two stars is not because I disliked it. There were just more parts that I disliked than I liked. It was okay, but not great.
What I didn't like: -I found The Dragon's Light a little difficult to get into. I felt like I had to force myself to keep reading until Kindle meets Lyra because the writing was so simplistic and unsophisticated. In fact, when I was about halfway done with the book, I went back to double check if it was a middle grade novel because it was so basic. -Kindle goes back and forth between being obsessed with Lyra to pushing her away. While that could be fine, I feel that Scott didn't set it up enough to make it believable. I felt like those scenes were put in just to add drama and conflict. -I got so, so annoyed by the nicknames Kindle gave to the unicorn
What I did like: -When Kindle and Lyra go to the island after he becomes human, the family that they stay with is absolutely delightful. Honestly, I cared about them more than Kindle and Lyra and they had more personality. -Kindle is kind of a grumpy old man sitting on his front porch grumbling about kids on his lawn. I found the moments kind of funny when he really didn't want to do anything except sleep but reluctantly got involved.
I won this book as a Goodreads giveaway. While it had promise, it failed to deliver. The writing is juvenile, with many wrong uses of words..mopping instead of moping, shuttered instead of shuddered, etc.. The characters are always shouting at each other, like full blown tantrums, and the ending was weird. I'm assuming it's a series. I won't be reading any sequels. The author has promise, but needs to fine tune her writing style if she wants to keep readers engaged.
This wasn’t my typical read. So I was wasn’t expecting to get hooked into the story and characters like I was. It was wonderfully written and will be awaiting the next book.
I don’t normally read fantasy however the more I read of this the more I got into it and now hat I am finished I want to see what happened to the main characters. I hope there will be another book that will continue the story.
This is an easy read. I did get a bit weary of the "come here, go away" romantic theme that ran through the last half of the book, although I enjoyed the book as a whole.
