Shifter Queen #3

Anchor of the Beasts

Rate this book
ALIVE. FIGHTING. DESPERATE.

When I died, the shifters' humanity died with me.

Even though Tuslan managed to bring me back only seconds after the darkness consumed me, he and the others still went savage.

Now I have to figure out a way to bind myself and my magic back to everyone in Tendira--including the shifters who legitimately killed me.

It won't be easy, but at least Tuslan's with me.

In his furry form.

Being human has never sucked like this before… but it gives me a way to save everyone I love.

And I may be human, but there's not a chance I'll let Tendira fall without a fight.

Beasts be with me, because I'm going to need all the help I can get.

Y'all don't let these covers fool you....they are bad imo.....this series is fab!

More surprises await for Mesa and Tuslan. So much happens here I can not say a lot other than:

It has been a pleasure to read this series. Exceptional storyline. Heat slowly builds in each book ending on a 🔥🔥🔥🔥 for me. Perfect ending tying up the loose ending for all the favorites. So glad this popped up as a suggestion.

Happy reading,

Plot ⭐️⭐️.5
Spice 🌶️🌶️.5
Romance 💘💘💘💘💘
Vibes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 3, once again, picks up right after that cliffhanger from book 2. The plot kind of takes a small dip here because there's no real antagonist. All of the shifters are stuck feral in their beast form and Mesa has to figure out a way to connect them with their human halves again. Once she gets Tuslan back to his normal self, pretty much the rest of the book is them searching for answers and having sex - which was hot because they are so sickeningly in love it made it that much hotter. Things kind of get wrapped up a little too nicely and convenient towards the end (especially as the lead wolves of the Blood Pack link up again - IYKYK) but overall it was sweet. Could've been a little shorter since a lot of it seemed like filler and there wasn't a grand fight or battle at the end... but still a quick read and overall I really enjoyed the series. Rated 4 stars not because it was an literary masterpiece but because it was a good time and I enjoyed the characters and their relationships. This book didn't really follow the "Chekhov's Gun" principal but I found myself amused with all of the side-happenings/conversations that just added to the overall vibe of the story.

4.5 stars

I’ve quickly become a big Lola Glass fan. This series was great, and I absolutely adore how realistic of a writer Glass is. For example, the scene where the heroine is trying to keep herself awake so she forces herself to sit in her underwear on a cold floor while reading… so weirdly mundanely detailed and something that’s missing in a lot of contemporary romance, let alone fantasy.

As a whole, I feel like many of Glass’s series suffer from end of series syndrome. I always rate the first book five stars, and they slowly seem to go down in rating just slightly. I think that’s because the romance plot is always my favorite, and tends to have the most tension frontloaded. By the last book, Glass is typically completely focused on the action plot. I wish a little more conflict in the romance plots was maintained throughout.

Overall, loved this series. I could definitely tell the last 100 pages felt rushed and based on the afterword, it seemed like this book suffered from approaching deadlines. While I’m happy with the ending overall, I’m a little frustrated with how the side characters’ stories were wrapped up. There was a lot of build up for only a few sentences of rushed closure. I get why it happened, but still disappointing.

4.25 stars overall. I love how this series is more focused on the fmc and mmc relationship growth, but still have decent plot and unique take on shifter.

I loved mesa and Tuslans story. This last book was action packed and kept you on your toes. There were characters you expected to like but ended up hating and characters you expected to hate but ended up loving. When I thought I had things figured out some other shoe would drop. I really enjoyed the fast forward to get a peak at the family life of M and T after the dust settled with all of the action and drama.

If I had to make one “complaint” it would be that I generally like to have more detailed world building. I want the words to help paint a picture for me in a fantasy series - we got glimpses of this and I can’t wait to read more.

As always with Lola I was sad that this is the end of these characters books but looking forward to the book that was set up at the end. I hope it will give us a detailed look into the lives of some of the key players in the Shifter Queen series.

The pacing of this book was definitely off. The first half reads like it is a four book series — super slow. Almost too slow, I think and sadly lacking the secondary characters that help make this series great. The second half was a rush and too much happened.

If you follow her on FB or her newsletter, she explains why. And it’s still a Lola Glass book so it’s still good. I really like Mesa and Tuslan and their friends, it just was unbalanced and too much of the Stone and trying to figure out the magic, and then not enough of all the other stories - I’m sad there won’t be spin-off books because I would’ve gobbled them up. I liked the other heroines. And their romantic situations were interesting.

Why was the first one so good?!

The first book was 5 stars for me. The second book was three. This one was 2. The writing felt so lazy. The sex was lackluster, not memorable. The main female character got annoying with her insecurities and wanting to be a shifter (even though she’s a very powerful human). How many times can the female character say “Beasts”??

DNF at 40%.

This series started so good, then it devolved into childish banter between the two main characters and almost zero plot. Such a disappointment.

Underwhelming

The magic in this series is an interesting concept and I like how it’s tied to the land.
I can say that I enjoyed the relationship between Tuslan and Mesa when they are alone. They’re cute and playful until he went from the MMC to a prop. Everything started to revolve around Mesa’s feelings to the point that the plot disappeared and no one else mattered. The side characters behavior was confusing at times and there wasn’t enough depth for me to understand. I don’t really have an opinion on them.

Two issues with Mesa.
1. She has a real inferiority complex and snaps at the smallest things. Even when it is for her own safety because everyone is literally trying to kill her.
2. She is a pro fisher and constantly has Tuslan reassuring her. Other times, she’s thinking about how much she loves her human self and what everyone is doing to make sure she is happy. One sided.

For the story
Mesa slowly started figuring out what to do and Tuslan helped her along the way, but it was only them. Sure, she struggled but the lack of conflict took the excitement away from the reader when she accomplished it. I felt like giving her a gold star instead of cheering her on.
The enemy of the story was an entire pack, and they were written in a way that made me see them as a thing, not people. It was hard to keep the hate burning, especially when there is no interaction. They snuck in for a rescue, took out a few guards, and went on their merry way. The enemy fizzled out on its own.

Overall, the story was lacking and underwhelming but I didn’t hate it. It makes me want to binge Lola Glass and see what other shifter stories she came up with.

conclusion and wrap up.

I gave this 4⭐️ for the conclusion to a great trilogy, characters I loved, and some truly beautiful words.
That said, the story itself was more a 3⭐️ for my tastes.

The first part was slow, quiet, and dragged quite a bit.
The next part was classic romance with a lot of sex.
The last part was interesting, but the answers just came to easily, without a lot of … they did require effort … but you never worried about the ending … even the final twist was resolved before any real anxiety developed.

I still loved all of it, the choices made, the stories direction, and especially the world created.

I just wish there could have been a bit more action, a bit more losing the reader in the world itself. Details so you feel you’re there. Conversations that are not only informative or beautiful, but …. Somehow take you along with the story, rather than giving you all the answers.

That probably makes no sense… this one, I wanted to know the answers, the conclusion … but that’s what it was, answers, conclusion … not the story moving forward.

We spent too much time with first just one, then just two. Then we barely delved into the other characters, and finished it off with a whole lotta tell, not show.

Too much at the beginning, not enough at the end.

Having said all of that, still love the author, her characters, her world, and the ideas she made real.

Will definitely check out more.

All the feels!

Lately, I have been struggling to find a good book or series that just sucks you in to the point you just cannot put it down. Yet here I am at midnight finishing the last book in this series. Same as I did yesterday and the night before. Yes, I absolutely devoured each book in just one day each because they were that good! The world building was impeccable, the way Mesa's and Tuslan's emotions bled through the pages and into your soil exemplifies just how immaculate this series was written and to me shows just how much heart the author put into the series. If you want to laugh and cry and ultimately do what most of us avid book lovers crave and fall into pages and absolutely forget the world around you, then you should definitely choose this series to fall into. If this series is any indication of the author's other series, then I look forward to diving into some of Lola Glass's other works of art!

* I received an ARC for an honest review*
This book is the conclusion of the wonderful Shifter Queen series. I loved watching Mesa and Tuslan's relationship flourish all the way to the end. The start of the story was relatively slow, however I felt that the pacing was purposeful. To make us feel Mesa's stressed yet sedentary state before she has a starting point for where she needs to go next. That being said the last part of the story is told somewhat quickly, however if you follow Lola on FB she explains her reasoning for this. All in all I enjoyed the conclusion to this story. With each book we really were able to see Mesa and Tuslan grow not only as individuals but in their relationship dynamic. I can't wait for Lola's next series!

This was a great end to the Shifter Queen series! I wish the ending could have been longer, but I totally understand why it wasn't. I liked the action of this one. There's a lot that happens. Learning more about the magic and world was great. I really hope we get more from the side characters or this world someday, because it was so unique and interesting! I loved all of the characters and their relationships. Lola always writes realistic love stories, and great friendships. Overall, I adored this series and always love how she writes fantasy. If you like imaginative world building, characters that are real, relationships that are always believable, and action packed plots, don't miss out on this series!

Wow! Just wow!

I wasn't sure about this series when I first started it but by the end of the first chapter I was hooked! It kept my interest which is hard to do these days. I read all the time and if I get bored by the first chapter I usually don't finish it. So I read the whole series. It really pulled me in and kept my interest. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next! I definitely recommend this series. Most writers spend to much time describing the "romantic" encounters. Personally I find that offensive. I have my own imagination that works fine. Lola Glass describes the encounter in a tasteful way that intrigues instead of discussing. Great job! Check them out! You won't be sorry.

I loved seeing Mesa finally grow into the powerful and compassionate leader she was truly meant to be… not only does she complete her own journey of self-discovery, but along the way she saves so, so many other people. The history of their world was more fully explored and it was fascinating to see how Lola Glass weaved Mesa’s story into its present and future. As in the earlier books, the found family relationships and mate love explored were heartfelt and all of the characters expressed deeper and more vulnerable emotions. The series conclusion was extremely satisfying and I loved the epilogue giving us an even deeper peek into where everyone ended up.

Loved it

A great series. This author has done an amazing job at writing an amazing man who is fierce and protective, but also sweet and empowering. Our fmc is fierce, independent, and strong but not ridiculously stubborn and idiotic, like so many tend to be.
The world and characters are intriguing and diverse and unique enough for us to enjoy without feeling we are reading the same book as about a thousand others we've recently came across.
If I had to give one critique to the series, I would say the world building is a little lacking and needs to be fleshed out more.
I greatly enjoyed these three books and have devoured them over the course of two days.

And now to read them all again...

Wow! What a ride! The shifter queen series ends with this fabulous book! I love Mesa and Tuslan's relationship and how Mesa evolves as a character through the series. This last instalment is my favourite of the trilogy. I love a happily ever after, especially with such relatable, real characters and Lola Glass delivers a beautiful HEA especially after so much to overcome. You could read this book as a standalone but why would you when you can read all 3 and be lost in this fascinating world of shifters for even longer. I really hope we go back to hear more about this world in the future...

Tulsan & 6 shifters

I loved all the books, both book 1&2 got 5 ⭐️ but this one gets a 3.8. It felt rushed. The other books had build up, everything fit nicely. This book felt like it was rushed. It didn’t feel the same as the last three…. And the queen, she jut pisses me off. I expected more… her introduction, part in the book, all were lacking. And the energy with Mesa, could have been explained more, worried over more, detailed more… something. I would have preferred if the queen took a moment to answer all the questions Mesa had. Explaining would have done a lot to complete the book. Many aha moments.

Happy to finish this series and put a nice bow on the end of Mesa and Tuslan's story. It was a fast paced end to the story and I definitely enjoyed the epilogue. I do wish there had been a little bit more world building towards the end of story of where Tendira is going from here. It felt like it wrapped up just a bit too fast. Also!

I will definitely be checking out more of the Lola Glass books (but girl hire someone to do your cover art)

Maybe even a two.
The first half of the story didn't have the same feel as the previous two books and with the lack of other characters besides Mesa and a wolf it seemed rather dull. The second half was better but it still did not have the same energy and excitement as the prior books in the series and felt rather boring. I found all the other matings and pairing up amongst the pack leads rushed into the end of the book and did not feel any individual attention focused on these characters as had been done before. They felt more like distant characters in this one with little thought even at the conclusion.

so happy to have randomly stumbled upon this series! thankfully, they changed the cover though because the original one is really tacky... it was definitely a high 4 star! was debating if i should just give the whole series 5 star but not going to lie... this one was a bit repetitive. i think it couldve been a duology since this one at least half of the story is the same thing over and over again (Mesa learning the magic, practice the magic, tie each person one by one and being described every single time...)

-Tuslan is definitely a new book boyfriend.... especially with all the cuddles, swim, and protectiveness gahhhh

Mesa’s journey to bringing back these shifters and their humanity was great to see as she never gave up and always pushed herself to solve problems even when it drain her mentally and physically. Tuslan plays such an important part for Mesa as he is supportive and always lifts her spirits when she is feeling low. There was pack disputes and a race to save shifters in trouble so it was quite action packed and never dull. Plus a great ending to ties things up.

I am so sad to see the end of Mesa and Tuslan, but what an incredible journey! This series was incredible, and ended beautifully. This book picks up where Pillar of Wolves left off, with Mesa trying to figure out how to save Tendira. I loved seeing Mesa interact with wolf Tuslan, but also just the way she grew and strengthened was so great to see. Mesa is a fun but fierce protagonist, and Tuslan is the perfect protector/mate and I'm so happy they got the ending they deserved. I am such a huge fan of Lola Glass, and can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

The hea was great, the love story heartfelt. The fantasy world interesting however so many questions left unanswered around the main plot line. How did the tidals know about the original shifter queen but no one else did. I still wonder if Cina was rigging the games how long has she been queen when there were so many other queens as well, how we do not know. I wanted the questions to be answered and the blanks filled in, but I still enjoyed the series even if I have more questions than answers at the end.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of Anchor of the Beast by Lola Glass. Originally slated for four books, this third book brings the series to a close. I really enjoyed Mesa and Tuslan's story. Lola Glass has quickly become one of my go to authors for quick and satisfying reads. This sweet and sexy read is also action and drama laden with splashes of humor and a couple of unexpected surprises. A fun anytime read.

I could not put this book down. I loved reading this Shifter Queen series and recommend it to anyone who loves shifter stories.
I was hooked into Mesa & Tuslan's story right from the start, right from book 1, the chemistry they have, I loved it.
I loved all of the characters and the storyline.
This is the end of the trilogy and I am sad that it had to end.
I cannot wait to read more from this author. She writes well. Awesome story!
