The charecters arrive on mysterious island, with fantastically creepy imagery. The beginning of the first volume had me worried the series was going to be a waste of time, fortunately characters are interesting, along with getting hurt and hitting limits. Using the same solution for every problem is just bad writing.
Definitely hoping this series stays this solid. I'm enjoying the mystery of the island, as well as the creepy imagery that permeates it. The main characters are pretty good as well and the fact that they are getting hurt and hitting limits makes me pretty happy since they have to think and not just brute strength everything.
Hell's Paradise continues to be weird, strange, very violent, and yet I can't stop reading.
While maybe not as good as volume 1 the high energy this manga gives off is undeniable. The vicious fights both our Ninja/Samurai warrior have to go through to survive is great. Not to mention the sad but solid ending to a foe who might not have been so bad despite his actions. We also see a little "fuck you this is my own destiny" here. Though I have a feeling if this was in a marvel comic people would be claiming this writer is SJW for putting in the fact a Woman stands up to a man for telling her she's nothing more than a woman and her destiny is to breed and not fight. But you know, the online is filled with losers anyway.
Still this is a fun volume with brutal fights and plenty of plot progression for other characters. Even a psycho pair of twins. I'm excited to see where we go next.
There was some strong women energy in this volume and I was completely for it. This story is is very interesting as the world around them continues to develop with each chapter. Every volume has several new characters that get introduced and help create this bigger picture of not just the story but the world around them as well. Gabimaru and Sagiri are an amazing duo and it was really cool to see Sagiri come out of her shell in the ways that she did - standing up for herself and following through with her Samurai code. Volume 2 was great and definitely raised some eye brows as they began transitioning into volume 3.

I LOVE SAGIRI SO MUCH! It's so interesting how she is carving her own way outside of the expectations society places on women and following the 'middle path'. I loved it when she said, "Turn your emotions into intensity and power, all while maintaining rationality and not losing sight. What drives me is neither rage not calm... It's the space between!"
Sagiri really is a character that embodies the idea of 'the space between'. She is full of warmth yet cold as ice, she is emotional yet ruthless, she is afraid yet full of courage. I love the way she accepts her inner contradictions to become even stronger.
Both Sagiri and Gabimaru's wife (we don't know her name yet?) are different examples of women choosing their own paths outside of what was expected of them. I like the way they both show different types of strength.
"I want to live my life on my own terms... That is all I ask. And I believe that is something all people desire, no matter their gender or even their status. The desire to decide one's way of life is a basic emotion shared by all of humanity, is it not?"
Even more interesting, is the way Sagiri is similar to the island itself. The island is also a 'space between'. Not quite heaven but not quite hell, a blend of Buddhist and Taoist influences and containing monsters that are "too surreal to be seen as natural entities, and too artificial to be seen as divine apparitions".
I find this manga so interesting and I can't wait to see what will happen next!
Omg Sagiri, yessssss, embrace both sides! Ugh I love her. The island is getting more and more mysterious with that last chapter and I am definitely intrigued.
arc provided by the publisher and netgalley in exchange for an honest review
I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue with this series after volume 1 but I got my hands on this one so I thought I would give it a try.
My overall feelings are pretty much the same as book one. The plot is sort of interesting but relatively slow, the monsters are creepy and some of the characters are likeable while others were just irritating.
There’s also a really weird scene with one of the characters being naked and I’m pretty sure they’re a minor so I didn’t like seeing that.
I most likely won’t be continuing on with this series.
sagiri navigating her self-doubts and finding her own path and conviction, we love to see it!! also i hope this is the start of a real partnership between her and gabimaru.
(could've done without the pointless nude shots of 17-year-old sagiri and 12-year-old nurugai though).
While I appreciate how the author approached gender roles through a length of life choices(made by your or to you), it’s very bothersome the fact that every single one of the female characters are hypersexualize or putted in a sexual setting. It doesn’t make it uncomfortable because this story is also very horny but, for me, the “gender message” kinda gets weakened. It’s almost as these characters want to be more but the author doesn’t allow them to. Maybe I’m making an overstatement here(due to this being the vol.2 out of 13)but who knows, everything can change.

“No distinction between man and woman, strength and weakness. You accept both opposing forces within you. Taking the middle way… such is your conviction, yes?”
aaaaah. Okay this is only volume 2 but I’m really digging the art and the story so far. I love the mystery of the island and the different monsters that have been shown so far. To compare it to something else, it has similar vibes to annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer but it’s a group of criminals and samurai instead of scientists going into an unknown region.

Thank you so much to Netgalley for providing this e-arc!
I previously read the first volume through the same publisher so kudos to them for providing these wonderful books. I once again like it very much. The theological side of it intrigues me. Although the pace is somewhat moving in a strange way. AS strange as the island the're in i must say.
"One should be free to choose one's own life whether man or woman."
more chapters, more actions! love to see some girlboss energy in this chapter, but god they keep introducing new characters i just can't keep up with their names and their background stories so i had to reread some chapters. The mystery of the island is growing deeper and seems so interesting, i was so curious about the village there.

A ton of repetitive action but didn’t feel like we got much character development or that anything was meaningful. Won’t be continuing this. And of course the continued unneeded female nudity and portraying majority of female characters as trying to use sex to control and destroy men, without giving them any personality to make it more than a cliche trope.
