Review of eBook

Astrid Snow, back to the hotel after her gym session, discovers she’d picked up the wrong phone in the changing room. Examining the phone, Astrid discovers a series of grim threats of abuse. She tracks down the owner and heads out to return the phone.

When Astrid reaches Julie Cash’s home, she learns that the young woman has been receiving these vile texts for the past six months. Astrid asks Julie to introduce her to her fiancé, Alan, as an old friend. She asks a few questions, trying to determine the reason for the messages.

Some two hours after leaving Julie’s home, Constable Eastwood contacts Astrid; someone attacked Julie while she jogged in the park. Determined to find some answers, Astrid heads back to Julie’s home to question Alan.

As she continues her investigation, what will Astrid discover?

=========

This short story, a prequel to the author’s Astrid Snow series, introduces the main character and gives readers a look at Astrid’s investigative procedures. Her intuition is spot-on, but without any backstory for the character, readers will find it difficult to understand why she investigates but is careful to hide her involvement.

While the story focuses on harassment and Astrid’s efforts to find justice for the victim, it seems as if this will happen when the police arrive. But Astrid’s strange actions regarding her efforts are sure to leave readers with more questions than answers.

🖋️ A.S. French put together a crisp and succinct story, particularly since he presents a nicely written work with the descriptive terms and scenes, and the staccato-like sentences. Note that the spelling and some phraseology is British English.
🟣Kindle.
🔲 Excerpts of note:
🔹Alan grinned at them like the cat that caught the rat that ate the cheese.

🔸She watched over him in silence and waited for the police to arrive. She left via the back door when they knocked at the front. She climbed over the fence into the neighbour’s garden and then moved up the path and into the street.

Astrid has just arrived back home from the gym. She’s pouring her first glass of wine when her phone, very unexpectedly, begins to vibrate.

And Astrid realizes that the phone in her jacket is not her cell.

She does some digging and traces the phone to its owner, Julie Crisp.

Julie lives with a very creepy man—her fiancé, Alan. Julie and Alan had joined a swingers club, but were only members for four months.

Julie’s been on the receiving end of all types of harassment—phone calls, texts, social media. So when Julie is attacked while out running, Astrid goes into spy mode.

Quick thinking, superior investigative skills, and not exactly our average heroine. Sharp and concise in both prose and narrative flow. Very auspicious beginning.

Sweet mystery

Interesting short story. I love how Astrid solves the crime and helps the police without letting them know of her involvement. There is another link that I can't place my finger on but that's is what makes me love this story.

A short introduction to Astrid Snow but what an introduction. It certainly packs a punch and I immediately warmed to Astrid. I like kick-ass women characters and will start reading the series now.
