War is terrible, rebellions are worse, and being on the losing side is a death sentence. Meet Nick, the son of the rebel leader who lost the war. Follow him and his friends as they enter an Empire filled with class systems and Shadow Magic, all while dealing with the consequences of living. Nick may not be the warrior that his father was, but he is an opportunist. And if he has to make it into this new world, he will. He only hopes his parents aren’t rolling in their graves. “You know what they say, ‘If you can’t beat them…’” “Join them?” His friend pales. “Not, quite,” he hisses. “Become their new leader!”
The story was intriguing, there were some confusing parts where it was difficult to determine who's point of view you were reading and some missing words but for a first book it wasn't bad. I think some more editing should have been done. However, I did enjoy the story and the plot twists were good. I hope to read the next book soon and see how improved the author gets. Some more character development and world building I think would also be a benefit to the overall story. I will read the next book to see how the story develops!
This book was excellent! I’ve never read a fantasy before and this is was an amazing intro to it. I loved the characters and it kept me hooked until the very end. The suspense of those last few chapters has me excited for the next book.
