Circle Seven #2

The Unrighteous Son

Rate this book
Matilda Ashby has seen the monsters that lurk in the shadows of Manhattan—and within the walls of her family business. While creatures of myth aren’t hunting her anymore, she can’t say the same for Samson, her former bodyguard, after a photograph of the telepath in danger finds its way to her desk. Desperate to save him, Matilda dusts off her Manolos and ventures back into the supernatural world, a world she wanted nothing more than to leave behind.

However, Matilda isn’t the only one searching for Samson. Necromancers, sent by Samson’s former boss, are hot on her heels, and her MBA curriculum didn’t include a course on how to kill them. So, in order to save Samson, she’ll have to trust former enemies—and her instincts—to get him back.

But in a world where being human is a weakness and being kind is a liability, Matilda isn’t sure how she can succeed in saving him, especially when her brother, and the family business, needs her too.

I did a re-read of the previous book The Family Cross first so I could hit the ground running.

I really enjoyed this one. To be honest I’d forgotten how much I’d enjoyed the previous one as well.

Here Matilda sets out to find and then rescue Samson.

"So please stop thinking you aren't enough. That you aren't special....Because you are everything to me."

I have been so excited about reading this novel and let me tell you, The Unrighteous Son DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. As a huge fan of Gabrielle Ash, I knew that I would love this like I love everything she writes. I would literally read anything written by this author because I adore her writing style so much. Ash has a way of crafting stories that keep me on the edge of my seat, flipping the pages furiously so I can figure out what's going to happen next because I am so attached to her characters.

Speaking of characters--Matilda is back and is a total bad ass. I love her and how she handles being thrust into the unknown paranormal world. Not to mention, she is not a damsel in distress, she's the one figuring out ways to get the crew out of dire situations and I just love that. And Samson! SWOON. I love him and how much he cares for Matilda. I'm trying to not be spoilery but one of the reasons he left...AHHH. So dang sweet. Their relationship is one of my favorite book relationships ever. They have each other's backs and will do whatever it takes to keep each other safe.

Oh and the steam. 🔥Y'ALL THE STEAM.🔥 The steam and the chemistry tied up with the emotion was everything. I also loved seeing Vee again and I have to put in my request for her and Zephyr to get their own book. No pressure or anything.

I am eagerly awaiting the third installment in this series so I can see Matilda and Samson get that HEA with a white picket fence that they talk about because they so deserve it. If you are searching for a romantic, witty, action packed urban fantasy with a strong FMC and swoonworthy MMC, look no further than this five star read. While you're at it, just go ahead and download all of Ash's books. You will not be disappointed!

I was SO excited to return to the Circle Seven world, and then The Unrighteous Son releases! Lucky me! I'm a huge fan of this series and how it blends urban fantasy action and romance through a story of a tough, smart lead who battles monsters with her brains as well as her strength. One of my favorite elements of this series is how it combines the cutthroat (at times, literally!) world of business with supernatural baddies on a quest for vengeance. This makes for a storyline that is as juicy and dramatic as it is exciting. Matilda is awesome and perfect to root for-it's so fun watching her overcome her uncertainty and grow into her newfound badassery. The second installment went heavier on the steam factor, which I certainly appreciated and I think fans of romance will, too. A terrific, fast-paced and red hot read that will leave you eagerly anticipating Gabrielle Ash's next book!

The Search for Samson . . .

Matilda Ashby ("Tilly") is trying to continue her life despite Sampson being gone from it. But she is brought back into the supernatural world when she finds that Samson, her former telepathic bodyguard, is in danger. Since she has no “superpowers” herself, she will have to contact her former enemies to help her proceed. He is being hunted by Necromancers sent after him by his former boss. Nero has her brought to him and, as a telepath, he searched her mind for what she knew. The pain he induced had her reminding him how Samson was so much better at that, causing her no pain and reading her thoughts effortlessly. Her comments made an impact and he angrily left her. There is much hostility among these powerful enemies, but she tries to protect those who helped her, even if she still has no idea where Samson is.

And while trying to save Samson, Matilda has the added pressure of her brother and the family business needing her as well!

The story is fast-paced and filled with twists and turns the reader won’t see coming. This is definitely a game of survival and Matilda is not equipped to battle the powerful supernaturals she will have to engage with. But she seems to be getting results regardless, and she stands up to them with confidence that surprises them. Will she save Samson? And will he come back to her?

I really enjoyed The Family Cross which is book 1 of this series and I needed to know what happened next.

The Unrighteous Son sees Matilda try and navigate life after the events of the first book and with Sampson gone.
However she soon finds herself drawn back into the fight with the supernaturals.

I really liked Matilda's character however I did find myself getting frustrated with her. We spent the whole of book one with her being a "spoilt rich girl" afraid of her own shadow and for good reason. I just felt that after the events this time round she may have hardened up a little but no! Though she did have a moment towards the end but that moment was fleet.
I loved Samson his inner battle was more in this novel which made his character grow.
I loved the world building in this novel and the way it's written captives you straight away. I found myself constantly reading to find out what would happen to our characters next.
The adventure and danger they find themselves in really did play out well.
I'm hoping there's going to be another book as I would like to see what happens next. Will Matilda and Samson get their HEA?.

Since we first met Matilda and Samson in “The Family Cross,” I’ve been dying to know more. Like that previous book, there is a lot of story here and I felt like most of it was speaking to me about overcoming feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness. I mean, how do you vanquish supernatural monsters as a mere mortal with no extra special abilities or training? This was not where I thought the story would take them, but it excites me to know that there’s even more of their story to come. Now I’ll be gnawing my fingernails to stubs waiting to find out what’s next.

I haven’t read the first book in the series, but there was enough to let me feel I had a handle on the story. Matilda Ashby is a human in a supernatural world that she doesn’t understand. She had hired a body guard only to fall in love. But he has disappeared. She finds herself floundering, and delving deeper and deeper into a murky world as she struggles to protect her half demon boyfriend and herself. She’s going to need old acquaintances, and maybe she has more friends than she thought. There are many authors writing in this area of the genre, but not all of them have the accomplished story telling gift of Gabrielle Ash, which she shares with the reader in a fast paced, action filled, entertaining, exciting and complete book. Thank you to City Owl Press and NetGalley for letting me read an ARC. The views expressed are all mine freely given.

Excellent paranormal read. Intense action, lots of baddies, villainous family dynamics, and a human woman fighting supernatural beings to save her man.

This is book 2 in the Circle Seven series. I recommend reading in order as there is a continuous timeline with this story and series.

Right after I finished book 1 in the series , I immediately dove in and started book 2. I was not disappointed and the writing even got better...if that's even possible! The story starts about 3 months after the events that occurred in The Family Cross. We find Tilly struggling with her life and the absence of Samson. Tilly believes that she is safe until she receives a photo and all bets are off. She knows she needs help and goes to Cliff and Vee for assistance for. This sets off a series of events that not only puts her in danger, but everyone she loves. Tilly is not sure if she can survive the politics and rules of the supernatural world, let alone save any of her newfound family.

Man I love this series. The writing continues to be superb and I am in love with each of the characters for different reasons. This also includes new ones that are introduced in this book and others that were introduced in book 1. There is such depth in each character and not only that but the flaws that each have make them seem vulnerable in a supernatural world. Tilly's struggle without Samson and her own insecurities make her such an amazing FMC. I was constantly rooting for her and hoping she saw her potential. The beauty of this book is that they are all not just these perfect people who do everything right. They have flaws and make mistakes like normal people and this is my most favorite part of the book. We get a new mystery and find new enemies. We also meet new people that I am looking forward to finding more about. We get some answers in this story but also new twists and turns. I am loving the new character Quinn and I am anxious to see where his story arc goes because I am positive we will see him again. The banter between some of these characters had me in stitches and made some of the sad parts easier to deal with. Such brilliant writing...Can I just say that again.......There are so many ways this series can go and I am looking forward to seeing where the author takes it. This book also gets 5 stars from me.
