Relentless: Homeless Teen to Achieving the Entrepreneur Dream

Rate this book
Relentless chronicles one woman’s triumphant arc from living in a homeless shelter to making the Inc. 5,000 list of fastest-growing companies in America.

Natasha Miller takes you along on her journey as she breaks free from a troubled, abusive childhood; overcomes the trappings of transiency; and harnesses her sheer grit to build a multi- million dollar entertainment production company while raising her daughter as a single parent. But that isn’t where her story ends. Bogged down by the daily grind of working in her business instead of on it, Miller sought an alternative. She shares the transformational inner work she did to grow her confidence and independence as well as the strategic, practical steps that enabled her to activate profits, optimize her systems, and become a leader with intention. Rich with personal anecdotes and nuggets of wisdom, Relentless is a book to come back to when you need honest advice from an old friend, a jolt of energy to kickstart your life, or simply a reminder that you can do it, whatever “it” may be.

I'm reading a lot of memoirs this month because it's nonfiction November, and I'm also working on a collection of personal essays that are sort of like tiny memoirs about something else too. Believe me when I say, these things (memoirs) are not all made equal. And this one, RELENTLESS by Natasha Miller, is a good one.

Some people will read memoirs only if they are written by celebrities, or famous people. Miller is neither a celebrity nor a famous person, and likes it that way, she told me in a comment on my Instagram post. Indeed, I hadn't heard of her before picking up this book. I gather from the early chapters that she's a successful musician, but *shrug*--the music that plays as sorts of tiny intermissions throughout the audiobook might have been a clue, but unfortunately, I listen to audiobooks on 2.5x speed. To me, the interludes sounded wavery and Miller's voice was unrecognizable.

Honestly, Miller's music career was, for me, merely a subplot. She is much more successful anyway as an event planner to the stars. But the main story is about a sensitive and creative girl whose violent childhood careened abruptly into a conclusion in the state foster system, followed by homelessness. Learning about the creative ways Miller met the challenges she encountered as a young woman (still just a teenager, dangit!), challenges that would level full grown adults, made me absolutely glow with pride and appreciation. Perhaps most importantly of all, Miller found so much love in her life, and she was wise enough to recognize it and let it lift her up!

Perhaps just as important as everything Miller says is everything I heard in the silence between words. She admits no anger toward her parents, who returned to her life once she established herself. In fact, she admits very little suffering in this book. But she also never claims a belief system that shuts these feelings out -- pain, sadness, regret. No, "positive vibes only, please." It was as though she decided her book was no place for that part of her. It was a startling, fantastic construction.

I didn't love everything about this memoir. But I was rapt when I was listening to this book; I finished it in two sittings over two days. It left me seeing bright and feeling bigger than my edges. This is a good memoir.

Thank you NetGalley and Natasha Miller for letting me listen to this brilliant audiobook.

“I saw my old high school guidance counselor in a bar called The Duck Blind one night and he said, “I thought you’d end up in a gutter, dead. Glad to see you made it.”

✮✮✮ 1/2

This is the truly moving memoir of Natasha Miller. She grew up with an abusive mother, and a father that didn’t appear to help her. On Christmas Day at age 16 she was dropped at a homeless shelter. But she never gave up, she learned to live with what she had and started multiple money-making ideas over her years, eventually owning a multi-million dollar corporation that she started from scratch.

The first half of this memoir had me crying. Natasha’s childhood was the type of thing you hear about on TV when a child has been killed, but luckily it never got out of hand that much for her. I felt so sorry for her that nobody in her life never really tried to help her get out from the situation she was in. However, the second half of this memoir showed exactly how Natasha handled herself, and how she made the decisions to do what she now does. She had ups and downs, but don’t we all?

I’m really not sure how to feel now that I’ve finished this book. Was it written in good heart, hoping to help others going through abuse? Absolutely. Does it show that anyone can get to the top if they try hard enough? It sure does. But there just seemed to be so much missing between the lines. It contains her history of all the hardships she faced, all the phases she went through building her business, but I just feel there seems to be something missing. Is she happy now? Has she found love again? Does she want to? What does she aspire to do now? Maybe I’m being overly picky but it just felt like so much more could have been said.

This memoir tells the story of a young woman who experienced significant verbal and physical abuse at the hands of her mother, but managed to learn and grow into a successful business woman and mother. Despite the many challenges she faced growing up and the many times she found herself in dire situations, Natasha was able to survive and persevere in incredible ways and this story shows that even people coming from a very difficult upbringing can achieve their dreams.

I really connected to Natasha because of our shared love of music and difficult childhoods. I thought that she was able to share a very difficult and personal story in a way that could be inspiring and also informative for others experiencing a rough time in their lives or recovering from past traumatic events. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy memoirs and want to read about successful women who came from very challenging backgrounds. Additionally, if you are a fan of Natasha Miller's music or musicians and entrepreneurs you will also love this book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'd never heard of Natasha Miller before reading this book. The story is a memoir about an incredible woman who pushed past setbacks and hardships over and over again, never giving up and always relying on creativity to get by. Eventally, she created a highly successful business. I thought the story of her life was pretty cool, but I wasn't a huge fan of how it was written. After finishing the book I watched some videos of Natasha Miller singing jazz and giving speeches and determined that (in my opinion) this book would be better as an audiobook narrated by Natasha herself. Her own voice would add what I found lacking from reading the ebook. Her writing style contains a lot of her personality, but since I didn't know anything about her before I started reading it was hard for me to connect. An audiobook, I think, would solve that for others who aren't familiar with her work. I'm curious to hear what other people think, especially people familiar with Natasha and her company!

Relentless by Natasha Miller is an inspiring biography that takes readers on an emotional journey. We follow the author as she tells her story of leaving an abusive home, finding the motivation to work to live on her own, raising her daughter and still managing to pursue her dreams no matter the obstacles she faced.

The author boldly shares her story with no sugar coating. She is unfiltered and honest. While I was reading her story, I felt like I was having a conversation with a lifelong friend which helped me connect with the author.

The author’s descriptions of places and people are very detailed and I was able to clearly imagine what was going on; making the impact of emotional moments even more potent. It was really sad to hear Natasha mention in the beginning of the book that she wanted to leave the shelter that she was in to go back with her mother, but her mother did not want her back. This is a life changing moment for the author. But she dug deep within herself and found the strength to build a life for herself, and I was moved by her will and determination.

Relentless is a hard book to put down because readers are left on edge, just waiting to see what could possibly happen next to Natasha. I admire the author’s courage in sharing with us the fact that she had to seek professional help and was later prescribed Zoloft. In today’s society many people feel shame from needing the extra help, but the author didn’t see it that way, and I appreciated her candor.

The most inspiring part of Miller’s story is how she was able to build her own business and is now helping other entrepreneurs. Natasha’s story is a must read for anyone looking for an emotional but ultimately uplifting story. Relentless serves as a reminder that no matter what you are going through, you are not alone, and you will make it out of the darkness.

This is not a usual memoir, it’s a rare find, a good read! The moment that I read the prelude, my mind is like playing a movie based on a real-life story. I had a mix of emotions! I love how the book is so relatable at some point and it did not only focus on a specific area of life but shows a lot more- from an abusive childhood, homelessness, family issues, music, depression, adulting, thriving, hardships, entrepreneurship, success, and a lot more that you’ll discover when you read the book.

Natasha is fearless, unstoppable, and relentless in achieving her dreams. This is an extraordinary memoir that I'll remember until I grow old and prove to myself that I can also do amazing things in my life! Thank you for the bravery, honesty, and vulnerability and for inspiring and reminding me that "it's not enough to be resilient, you have to be relentless".

I love memoirs because I love hearing about people’s stories. Natasha has some crazy, amazing stories, but I found the way it was told in this book to be a bit detached. There were so many emotional things in this book without actually connecting to any of the emotions. One large exception being the story about the author’s stillbirth. If the whole book were written like that section this would be 4 stars or more for sure. I agree with others that this would probably be better in audiobook form.

Miller’s childhood and drop-kick into adulthood at 16 is catapulted by her Mother’s violent, neglectful mental illness. Because she was periodically lifted during this by her Father’s music, her friends and sporadic mentors; she evidences an amazing inner ability to pick herself up and shift gears.
She has arrow-sharp ability to turn a phrase and dark humor, saying things like “Remember being torn between snotty arrogance and raging insecurity? Yeah, well, then you remember junior high,” and “What I lacked in experience, I made up for in curiosity and persistence…(my boss) was relentless, so I was too. Within a few weeks, he started calling me ‘Pitbull.’” She uses her uncanny interpersonal intuitions to detect and empower brilliant opportunities. Yeah! We need more of that!
Repeatedly, where others would have quit and given up, she recognizes early on “For years, I had been praying and waiting for someone to rescue me. But I didn’t need to be rescued. I could rescue myself. What I needed, was to be loved, valued and respected. Which meant I would have to show love, value and respect to those who believed in me.” And she persisted…
Failure? Breakup? Illness? Pandemic? Bottom fall out of your niche market? Retool, regroup, re-tech, reinvent by supplying “forty-five hundred face masks custom branded with my client’s logo,” “pivot to virtual,” “try new things.” “Be open to relationships with people outside of your normal circle or interest group.” “Be willing to start ugly.” “Don’t wait for help.” “I am my best self during a challenge.” “I truly love what I do.” “Jumped in the only way I knew how – work my ass off.”
“Virtual is more than just doing your act live for the camera, it’s knowing how to create your “set” with good lighting, a great microphone and quality camera work.” “It’s easy to lay down and quit. Easy in the short run. Regret and lethargy are soul-killers. You can live with falling short if you know you put up a fight.” “When times are tight, you have to get creative.” You GO Girl! (Can I be on you team? Please?) Brava!

3.5 stars. The author has an interesting story and came from tough beginnings with a hateful and verbally abusive mother. However, the writing just lacked a little of the detail and emotional depth that would make me really get stuck into someone’s story. I felt as though maybe some parts were skimmed over but I really wanted to hear it all. It began to go through her life quite quickly on the path to success so felt a little vague. Thanks to Netgalley for the arc.

The story of the author's life from dealing with an abusive, mentally unstable mother and having to leave her home at 16 to founding and running her own successful business. There are good life lessons in here, but the book just felt a bit flat. Miller recounts her life with its ups and downs and tells of her struggles, but it all seems to be a very superficial accounting of time. Interesting story but it wasn't terribly captivating.

Miller herself seems like a very inspiring woman who would probably be able to present her story in a much better manner through another medium.

Restless is truly the best title for Natasha’s life story. A great tell all about getting knocked down but never giving up because you never know what is around the next corner.

Thank you to NetGalley & Poignant Press for the audiobook arc. Relentless is narrated by the author. Natasha’s story is very compelling. She did not have a normal childhood. There was a lot of abuse - emotionally & physically.
She did everything she could to come out on top & be better than what she had. She had a daughter of her own & it was interesting to hear how she decided to parent compared to how she was parented. Natasha went through a lot of growth & became successful in more one career. It is always so refreshing to hear people breaking the cycle & becoming better than their parents.

I loved this memoir. So much pain, hardship, and incredible resilience and determination. She’s a fantastic author, and obviously gifted at all she sets her mind to. What an inspiration, that there is always a way. That there is hope. That there is a way to overcome generational dysfunction. Thank you for sharing your story, Natasha.

Full disclosure, I read this for a independent publisher competition. I did not like this book so much and it was clearly written with a ghost writer. The structure is fine but there are huge gaps as we go through the main character's life of how she got from point A to point B. It felt a bit narcissistic. I couldn't relate.

Inspiration, this is what I got from this book.

A great journey that Natasha shares with us that is unbelievable to watch where she came from
to where she has gotten.

She is proof that when we have both commitment and focus, we can conquer all.

Sad, emotional & relentless such a good audiobook! I loved everything the music, the narrator since it’s the author herself.

Not an easy life especially not if your mom is doing the verbal and physical abuse & out and on her own by 16. It’s a Memoir but it felt more like a very good story with heart and hopefully giving others hope and inspiration for others to get up and fight for yourself!

“No one is coming to save you”

Always looking for validation but Love, value and respect is what you need to show yourself & others is what I learned by listening to this powerful memoir!

More could of been added on how she had her daughter around her parents etc.
I’m definitely glad she’s happy and is successful much deserved & more than anything I’m glad she broke the cycle and didn’t give her daughter trauma that’s the biggest win!

Thank you NetGalley, Natasha Miller, Poignant Press, for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
