Tony Costa, a 32-year old homicide cop, who despite being in a relationship for over a year with a 25-year old vice cop, Ryan Nillson, still lives his life in the closet. Ryan is the first and only man for Tony, but he is not ready to tell the world about their relationship, even if he feels deep for Ryan. Until Tony and his partner, Jeff, stumbles into murder case, where the victims resemble Ryan -- and when Ryan is being involved in the case as bait (and since Ryan is out as a gay man in the force) Tony must reassess about his feeling because Ryan could be in danger

I haven't read many stories from Ms. Kersten but I thought I gave this one a try because my flist seemed to love it. While there are quite a lot of sex scene (which sometimes can turn me off) -- somehow I feel that there is a balanced combination between emotion, romance, and mystery.

There is enough tap into the mind of Tony (about his fears) and Ryan (about his yearn for Tony to acknowledge their relationship). I feel sad for Ryan ... he's just so sweet and tender and loving, and his willingness to accept that Tony never stays the night is heartbreaking. I love how their relationship changes due to the course of the murder ... that Tony finally admits what is inevitable.

The mystery is not heavy but not really light either. I'm intrigued about the secondary character, David, because I feel that he needs his own HEA. Definitely will read the second book

I enjoyed this story about two cops, but what's different is one is out and the other isn't.
Ryan loves Tony, he just isn't sure if it's mutual, and then the case they are working it brings it all to a head.
Recommended.

Just sort of wondering who the "Luke" is that the blurb on GR is talking about! LOL
Looks like the blurb was fixed. Good. :)

This was a very nice read, short but good. I liked both Tony and Ryan and thought they fit really well together. I liked the mixture of romance with the suspense and hadn't expected the twist at the end which added to the enjoyment of the book.

Tony Costa is a closeted Memphis homicide detective. For the past year, he has been in a "relationship" (read: friends-with-benefits) with vice cop, Ryan Nilsson. Despite the casual nature of their relationship, Ryan has fallen hard for Tony and wants more but is unwilling to leave him. The two team up to catch a serial killer targeting young, gay men who scarily resemble Ryan. The challenges they face and must overcome force them to closely evaluate their unexpressed feelings for each other.

I liked this one well enough. It's a short, fast read. Both Tony and Ryan were enjoyable. I wish that their relationship was further developed but the author did a good job, given the length of the book. I didn't care for Ryan's attitude and actions at times (e.g., ).

Bottom line: good but too short.

Meh.

This was not good. It was not painful either. But not good.

And I know had I read it two years ago (so eager for anything available m/m back in the days ante-kindle), I probably would have liked it. But my standards raised and this is sub-par. Just an example: in the first few smexy scenes there was constantly mentioning of "the hot c*ck". In exactly those words.
Also it sounds quite strange when they are going heavily at it and then "he spilled his seed" like in a bad 80ies m/f romance, when the Norman conquering knight mounted the Saxon maid.

Not original, no real suspense, a lot of very unprofessional cops and a boring "we have a relationship, but are afraid to say the L-Word" romance part.

Enjoyable, fast-paced story involving an undercover police operation aimed at solving a series of gay murders.

Ryan is a vice cop, looks like the victims and is out, so volunteers to go undercover to the gay club where the victims had been. Tony, his very much in the closet, lover and colleague provides back-up. Together they solve the murder but not without lots of drama and emotional admissions.

The only downside was the length of the story, it could easily have been longer.

This book was mostly porn with a little bit of plot, and it was just ok. It didn't draw me in, and neither of the characters were anything special. The shifting POVs were confusing when they occurred without a section break, which is a pet peeve of mine. I'd have liked to see more character development and a more compelling plot.

This was super fun! I love M/M cop romances, especially ones when they fall in love after being adamant about remaining fuck-buddies. This was also a nice little serial killer mystery with a twist.

Very enjoyable, can recommend to M/M romance and police officer fans.

Perfect. This is the perfect book for me and it was written perfectly and everything happened the way I wanted to, etc. I was particularly pleased because this is one of those romance serials where every story is a different couple, is usually shorter than average, and the general goal is to get to the HEA of true-love. In these books, the plot is often just a way to get the romance from point A to point Z.

The plot is typical for a mystery thriller, but it's still interesting and meshes well with the romance. Both are necessary to make the book. (The romance wouldn't work well without the plot, either.) The pacing is perfect. There's the right amount of action, dialogue, and description. It's shorter than I'd like but it's just the right length for the story. The climax is well done and maybe I'm an idiot but I didn't figure it out what was going on until shortly before the characters do. The romantic conflict wasn't black and white and everyone's behavior made sense to me.

There's the right amount of fear, suspense, danger, etc. No one is too stupid to live. The only dumb move is made by a trained cop whose choice is sort of reasonable and definitely believable under the circumstances. They look at all leads and clues. They do what they need to do to solve the case, even when they don't like it.

The characters are believable to me and their motivations and actions follow their personalities. Tony's struggle with his feelings felt more real to me than the typical rushed GFY cop coming out. This isn't instalove, it's an established, albeit closeted, relationship. And the sex was hot.

Ryan's needs, wants and desires are conflicting. At times I couldn't understand why he stayed with Tony but at other times it made sense. Tony's partner which I think is believable. I loved all of the characters except the ones I'm not supposed to like.

But the best part? Something that I've wanted in an M/M romance forever but sadly is never there: . For that reason alone I want to give the book six stars.

I will definitely be reading more of Kersten's work.

6 stars rounded down because of technological limitations.

Usually I'm not fond of romantic suspence, but in this case I was confident that the author would not disappoint me, and so it's.

Tony Costa is a tough homicide detective. He is leaving in a nightmare cause his last case is about a serial killer who prey on young, blond and gay victim. And all the victims could be twins of Tony's lover, Ryan, a vice cop. The hidden Tony's lover.

To Tony Ryan is his first male lover. He has never felt like this before, nor with women nor men. But he fears coming out. And Ryan, who knows the man before the lover, knows that Tony is a good man, a tender lover and a brave cop. So he is willing to wait for his lover to be sure and if that time will never arrive, he is still into this affair.

But when Ryan is assigned to the case, to play as pawn for the killer, Tony has to deal with his new found jealousy for Ryan: he has to step back and sees as his lover plays the role of the twinke to draw the killer. Cause he can't say nothing on the matter, he can't go to his captain and says he is sentimentally involved with the man.

The story is a good mix of romance and suspence: luckily for me, a bit unbalancing on the romance side (as I said before, I'm not fond of the suspence), but also the killer's matter is dealt with a fast paced rhytm and the real identity of the killer is not thrown away too soon.

Tony is a beautiful character, very hearthly and manly. He has doubts but that doesn't make him nasty. He deals with his problems without being a problem himself to Ryan. And also Ryan is a good character: patience and loving, he knows how to be "home" for Tony without make him feel sorry for not being all Ryan wants since the first moment. And this is maybe the strong side of the novel: in a story where one of the two characters is on his first male/male relationship, it's natural and right that he can have trouble to accept loving a man.

The story is not very long, 100 pages, but it's very well plotted: the sex is good but it's not free, it's masterly entertwined in the story, and so it doesn't make you tired to read it (and, well, you have plenty to read!!!)

Good balance of suspense and romance. I took to both characters and enjoyed how Tony comes to acknowledge his love for Ryan, both privately and publicly.

Can't say David made much of an impression but I'm reading Helping Hands now so I'll see if he grows on me.

I would only change one small thing about the book, and that is dismissible in my head for a couple of reasons. I really liked Tony and Ryan, they were hot! The coming out story was done nicely too. I really enjoyed this one.

**Grammar**

In the first pages of the book, we see a young blond man getting killed. Detective Tony Costa(32)is called on the scene of the homicide with his partner Jeff Payton. This isnt the first victim, they have a serial-killer.
Tony cant stop staring at the young man's face,he reminds him of his lover Ryan Nilsson(25).
Tony and Ryan have been lovers for over a year, but the younger man is sure that for Tony their relationship is only about sex, they are friends with benefits for him, but for Ryan they are much more. He is in love and each day is becomimg harder to not say to Tony that he loves him. The first scene when we see them together is soon after the start.
Ryan is taking a shower and Tony goes to him. Soon after they make love and i must say the scene is hot, they are really good together.Ryan understands that there is something wrong with Tony, but at the same time he knows that this isnt the time to ask, his lover seems to need this, the contact btw their bodies, he is trying to affirm something, and Ryan wants to give him all that he needs.
Tony has never been so turned-on and Ryan is jealous, maybe someone made him feel like this and for this he is now at Ryan's apartment.
When later, while cuddling, Tony explains what happened to him and that the victim looked like Rayn, the younger man understands what was bothering his lover. Also if Tony doesnt use the 3 little words, with his actions he makes Ryan understand that their feelings are mutual.

A few hours later Tony is back at the department and trying to identify the victims with Jeff, when he sees Ryan entering the chief's room. Tony knows that there is just one reason for Ryan, an undercover officer, to be there. They want him to go to the gay club Paradise undercover and be the bait.
Ryan knows that Tony is angry and worried, but this is his job, they need to catch the killer before he kills again. They argue, but in the end Tony knows that Ryan is right.
They are talking about the plan and how they will need to put a wire on Ryan, when the younger cop tells them that it would be found, since in the club he will be touched a lot. Tony is jealous, but most of all is worried, he cant leave Ryan alone in the club not knowing what's happening, so he decides that he will go with him. This will be a difficult task for him, before Ryan he had never been with a man and sure as hell he had never gone to a gay club. Jeff understands that Tonys is strange, he knows about him and Ryan and heard them argue in the bathroom. When Ryan leaves them alone Jeff asks him what happened and Tony explains to him that all the victims looked like Ryan and that he cant shake off the feeling that something will go wrong, that something isnt right.
Later that evening Tony calls Ryan and says to him that they need to talk and asks if he can come over. Ryan replies that he will not change his mind but that he can come. Soon after Tony opens the door, he was already w8 out.

Tony tells him that he still doesnt like this undercover mission but knows he cant tell Ryan what to do, since this is his job.

They make love and also if Tony cant admit it aloud yet, he mouths the words "I love you" against Ryan's skin.

For a book so short, there are a lot of sex scenes and another one happens soon after in the shower. I didnt mind them, since they were pretty hot, but maybe we needed more plot and less "actions between the sheets".

They turn off the shower and decide to move to the bedroom. There Tony asks Ryan for the first time to fuck him. Ryan asks him if he is sure, and Tony replies that at the moment he is sure of one thing and is the fact that he wants it, wants to know how it feels. Ryan had always thought he would be the bottom in this relationship and he was ready to be for how long their relationship lasted, forever if necessary, since he loves Tony, but he would have missed the feeling of having Tony like this. Now that he has the possibility to have him this way, he wants to be sure that this is what his lover wants.

Well Tony really wants it XD

Tony surprises him again that night when he doesnt leave like he usually does after they have sex, after kissing him goodbye, but asks him if he can stay. Ryan tells him yes and the 2 fall asleep in the same bed.

The next day they are at the club. Tony cant stop watching Ryan, he isnt the only one thinking his lover is sexy. He knows that they are undercover and cant stop other men from flirting with Ryan, but no one can tell him he cant think of what he would like to do to them.

Ryan knows that Tony's face seems stoic, but his eyes betray his real emotions and one of them is anger. He dances over to his lover and sits next to him.Tony offers him a bear and then Ryan goes back on the dance floor. Ryan doesnt stop the other men trying to touch him, but he doesnt let anyone kiss him. He knows that Tony is already jealous.

When another man puts his hands on his hips and Ryan turns,he doesnt expect to see David March. The man seems shocked and runs away, leaving Ryan in the middle of the dance floor.
Tony understands that something is wrong and goes to him. Ryan tells him that he knew that man in high-school and hadnt seen him since.

They are in the middle of a case, but they cant stop from touching each other. Ryan kisses Tony and soon later they are in the club's bathroom having sex. Well guys this doesnt make any sense, they should be trying to catch a killer, they are 2 grown men and dont have self-control. I like them, really, they are a good couple, but that wasnt the time to have sex under the pretence that this gives "cover credibility".

Ye sure.... -_-'

Later after they leave the club, Tony asks him about David March. Ryan explains him that he and David had been friends till one day they had been alone at David's house and got drunk, and ended up having sex. This wasnt a good memory for him, since when they woke up David had been horrified, had said that he wasnt gay, then had accused Ryan of getting him drunk and never spoke to him again.
Ryan doesnt think of David as a suspect, but Tony tells him that he will put his name on the list just in case.

4 nights later, still no trace of the killer. Their captain decides to stop the undervover mission. They have few suspects but nothing sure. David has had in the past few domestic calls, and Tony wants to talk to Ryan about this, maybe David isnt the man he thought.

Back at Ryan's apartment, he and Tony have sex again. Tony tells him that he hated watching other men touch him and Ryan replies that was part of the job. Tony tells him that he still didnt like it and that Ryan is his.

Later Tony tells him what he found about David, but Ryan is still sure that David isnt a bad person. After Tony leaves,Ryan decides to do his own investigating and goes to David's construction company.

During the drive Ryan cant stop thinking about the day he and David had sex. They had been each other's first and Ryan had though they would be also each other's last. He had told David he loved him and David had replied the same, but still the morning after all had changed.

He finds David and tells him they need to talk. The man takes him to his place. Ryan asks him were is his wife and David replies that they are separated.

At the same time we see Tony and Jeff going to interview David's ex-wife and ask her about the domestic calls.

Back at David's apartment, the man is explaining Ryan that he came out and for this he is separated. Ha had married the woman to prove his father he wasnt gay. He doesnt know how his parents had found out about he and Ryan, but they had been furious and David being scared had lied saying that he had been horny and drunk, that it would never happen again. His father had still beaten him.

When the man had died,David had understood he couldnt keep lying to himself and his wife. He tells Ryan that when he had said he loved him he had meant it and Ryan replies that it had been the same for him. David then says that he was surprised to see him at the club and Ryan doesnt want to tell him that he is a cop so he lies saying that he wanted to check the place out.

David asks him if they can have a second chance, that he cant stop thinking about him and then kisses him. Ryan at start doesnt stop him, but when David tries to do something more,he stops him saying that he cant, that he is seeing someone. David gets angry, asks him why he is there and tells him to get out.
While leaving Ryan tells him that he is sorry. David is not angry like before but still tells him to go.

A few hours later Tony goes to asks some questions to David and when coming out of the man's apartment notices Ryan's car,he understands that something is wrong.

At the same time we read about Ryan waking up tied in a strange place.

Tony asks David why Ryan's car is there and the man says that he had seen Ryan and they had talked. Jeff calls for patrols saying that an officer is in trouble. David asks if Ryan is a cop, and Tony replies that he is and that if something happend to him he wont make it to trial.
Tony explains David what's going on. David asks him if Ryan had gone to see him bcs he thought he was a suspect, but Tony tells him that Ryan had wanted to prove him innocent, while Tony thought he was a suspect. David tells him that he thought Ryan was there for another reason and Tony gets angry understanding what David is implying. Watching Tony's reaction,David understands that the person Ryan was talking about is this man.

David then tells him that he had tried to seduce Ryan, bcs he had wanted to have back what he had lost, but that Ryan had turned him down.He tells him that he still loves Ryan and then asks Tony if he loves him. When the man answers that this is none of his business, David replies that when they will find Ryan he will do all it takes to take him back. Tony wants to punch him, but in the end decides to leave the room.

A few minutes later Tony is back in the room and aiming his weapon at David's head. A Witness saw the man pick Ryan up with his truck. David screams that it wasnt him, that there are other trucks like his at the company. Tony is stopped by another cop and when he is out of the room again, with his mind clearer he is shocked to understand he almost killed a man in cold blood.

When Jeff goes to him saying he found out what happend, Tony cant stop his emotions. He is angry at himself and Ryan for taking this case, he fears that his lover is dead and that he didnt have the chance to tell him he loves him. Few minutes later a cop tells him that David received a call and that while listening he had looked sick. Now he was in the bathroom, door locked and didnt want to come out. Tony tells the cop that the phone wasnt David's but his, and he had dropped it before.

With the Gps on the phone they try to understand who called Tony and what he/she wanted.

When Tony finds Ryan, he understands that his lover was tortured. His captor had been David's wife.
When Ryan wakes up at the hospital 2 days after the rescue,he finds Tony near him holding his hand. Finally Tony tells him that he loves him and he cant live without him.

Tony tells him that the killer was Virginia and when Ryan asks him how he found him, he tells him about the Gps on the phone. When David had answered the phone he had understood what was going on,but afraid they wouldnt believe him he had escaped from the bathroom and tried to save Ryan. David will be ok soon.

Virginia was the killer, she had lost her mind when David had confessed her of being gay and when she had found a picture of him and Ryan, she had started to kill all the gay men with Ryan's features entering his ex-husband's life.

Ryan asks him if when he wakes up again Tony will be there, and the man tells him he is not going anywhere, that he loves him and will not hide anymore. Ryan replies that he loves him too, then falls asleep.

I expected more from this book,i think it missed a lot of things and sometime the MCs actions didnt make any sense. Said this I already started the 2nd book some weeks ago and I already like it less than this.

This is the fourth book I’ve read by Shayla Kersten and she definitely is one of my favorite authors! Hidden Force didn’t disappoint me either. Not at all! Again it’s one hot and exciting story! Not only does she never fail to portray her characters very well and make me sympathize with them very easily, she also knows how to build a solid layer of suspense and add a lot of hotness to the mix. There’s just nothing to dislike in her stories, unless you’re not into gay love I guess. I for one am becoming a big fan of gay romances, and Shayla Kersten is one of the authors responsible for that.

Hidden Force is part of a series of three books about hot gay policemen. The other two titles are A Helping Hand and Hidden Hands.
Tony and Ryan are friends with benefits. Ryan would like to be it more than that, but Tony wants to hide their relationship and his sexual preference. But then a serial killer is drawing their attention and things start to get dangerous. Feelings are changing and they might lose what they’ve got.
My stomach fluttered a few times reading some of the love scenes between Tony and Ryan. They were scorching and arousing as well as compassionate. The feelings of excitement and love of the characters did come alive because of the way the author wrote these scenes. It’s hard not to love these two guys with all their comprehensible feelings, doubts, fears and thoughts - and I liked the way the secondary characters were portrayed as well. The sub story about the serial killer is very believable and adds a lot of suspense, which increases the reading pleasure. But it doesn’t overshadow the main story at any time, it only complements it. Shayla Kersten truly does know how to write great books and I’m looking forward to read Hidden Hands (and some more of her books I’ve purchased at Ellora’s Cave’s eBook shop!

This was a really interesting book. I enjoyed it because it was not only a story of gay romance, but had a nice believable mystery in it as well. True the story of the gay cop afraid to come out of the closet for fear of his job has been done to death, but the twist of his relationship with another cop who is out to everyone gives it a fresh outlook. It was a little shorter than I usually prefer but Shayla did a good job of telling the full story in the space given. It would be good to possibly see a sequel of Tony and Ryan and see more of their story.

Oh and one big plus in this story is the mystery had a plot twist that left me saying "now where did that come from"....it will leave you guessing down to the very end.....

It was a very nice read.

The characters were very believable and in my opinion, the story had an equal dose of sexuality and mystery. I've never had a near-death experience for someone I cared, so not sure how believable it is to imagine someone accepting their sexuality and coming out to everyone after such an event but it worked well with the story. I also enjoyed the opposite personalities of the main characters, one being open, while the other was closed off and afraid. It made for a nice dynamic. The sex scenes were very... delectable. And the final twist in the story, coupled with the unknown attacker made for a thrilling end. It could have made for a more lengthy story but this was good too.

This was a really good, realtively short read. I say short, but it was right at 100 pages. It's something that you could probably just about read in one sitting. Very HOT! Has an undercover sting operation to catch a serial killer and has a nice surprising twist. It's fast paced with a well developed storyline. It's the first I've read of this author but I like her style. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series...really soon.

An interesting dynamic with one closeted homicide detective and one out/open undercover vice cop who have been secretly seeing each other and end up on the same case. The murder mystery adds some good suspense to the story and ends up with a surprising little twist. A nice way to pass a couple of hours!

The first decent M/M book I read in ages. It was shorter than my liking but still. It didn't feel like a bunch of sex scenes disguised as a story. It felt like a story with steamy sex scenes and suspense and a sweet ending. Kudos.

I don't know why people were saying that this was all sex/no plot. Yes, there were a few hot, very well-described sex scenes, but there was a lot of emotional build-up that I actually believed in, the mystery thread was thoroughly explored, and it was a well-rounded story. Which is incredibly surprising and impressive for 98 pages!

I honestly cared for and sympathized with these characters and cannot wait to continue the series. Of course I would have loved to read about the past year of Tony and Ryan's relationship as well, but I understood their emotions and choices, that they were at a turning point in their relationship, and every bit of this plot was rational and contributed to the story--including the sex, since that had comprised their relationship up until this point, a fact that was just starting to change.

"As much as he wanted it to last, the routine started the usual way.
Tony's arm tightened around him.
The final hug...
Brief kisses teased the back of Ryan's neck.
The build up to the good-night kiss...
Tony cleared his throat with a little growing sound.
And now for the brush off...
'Can I stay?'
Ryan opened his eyes as if it would help him hear. 'What?'"

And the writing was surprisingly good. After reading the negative reviews, I was expecting bad or silly prose that would make my eyes roll, but for some reason I was drawn to this book, and my gut feeling was right. This was a really great, well-balanced read that I enjoyed thoroughly.

And Tony and Ryan were great MCs to read about, as well. I loved Ryan; he's out and proud, has been hurt before by love, but was taken and emotionally involved with Tony right off the bat. Tony is unsure if he even is gay, and much slower to get up to par with his feelings and their relationship. Add in a serial murderer targeting people that look just like Ryan, causing him to go undercover into a dangerous position, and you have a situation where something has to give. And watching it all play out was priceless.

I highly recommend this read. It was a great cop/coming out/murder mystery story, and a perfect set up for the rest of the series.

Police M/M romance with one openly gay young Vice cop and one gay-for-you homicide detective who are on the down low in a relationship, but when a serial killer targeting gay young men comes to Memphis so the two policemen are assigned it the case.
Memphis homicide detective Tony Costa is openly hetero to his co-workers, but his detective partner Jeff has already figured out that something is going on with Tony and Ryan and he doesn't care about it, but there is lots of small minded people on the force who won't be as enlightened as Jeff.
Ryan Nilsson is young, about 25 in this story, but he passes for twenty. He is slim and blond which means that he looks like exactly the target of the new serial killer in town, so he is asked to be 'bait'. Of course, Detective Tony is against it right away, but in the end follows along with the plan, but this is only bringing out the truth that he is in love with Ryan and it isn't just a superficial hook-up type of relationship. It isn't clear how long the relationship would have stagnated in purgatory until the danger comes in to push out people's feelings and intentions.
This was a wonderful read and I quickly bought the rest of the series A Helping Hand and Hidden Hands. I really liked A Helping Hand because I love a friends-to-lovers plot although the best M/M friends-to-lover with gay-for-you themes is
Where He Ends and I Begin which is a solid 4 stars read!
100 pages and bought at AllRomance site $5.60 This seems expensive for a short story, but it is a well written story with a surprise and sweetness.

This is a rather enjoyable, though not particularly outstanding, OFY story about two cops in love. One is out, the other is not. I happen to be a sucker for cop-in-love stories, so I had a good time reading it -- and, even for folks who aren't in the sucker category with me, it's worth spending a little time with if you have an hour or two to spare.

There's a pretty good balance of action and romance here, with both elements relatively well developed and written in a relatively sensible manner. By that I mean I didn't have to roll my eyes, and the characters actually stopped and either talked or put their brain cells to work instead of giving in to opportunities for Big Misunderstandings and such. I did figure out the villain pretty darned quickly, but this is a short story so there really wasn't much space for extensive twisting and turning in the plot.

Two things I especially liked:

First, during one sex scene, the MC Tony gives out with the ever-popular alpha declaration of "Mine!". BUT -- instead of swooning over how loverly and masterful this declaration is, his lover Ryan objects to the possessiveness and jealousy on principle, thinking to himself that "Nothing good ever came from jealousy". Good for him!

Second, during the investigation Ryan goes to visit an old lover, who is a suspect in the case. When Tony finds out about the visit -- and not from Ryan -- Tony does NOT jump to any macho bullshit conclusions. That was actually quite refreshing.

All in all -- nothing really makes this story exceptional, and I would have much preferred for it to be longer. Nonetheless, it's a perfectly acceptable read. I'm giving this 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.

I didn't really like anyone in this book.

Most of all, I had trouble suspending my disbelief regarding the sloppy police work. I hope there is no one like Tony on my local police force; he has anger issues and is quick to violence and seems to disregard procedure and the law to an alarming degree. That kind of behavior is not sexy, IMO.

Final complaint - after all the "in the closet" stuff,

The writing in the very beginning of this book was a little on the patchy side. I'm not sure if this was due to too much editing or not enough - some of the beginning scenes seemed pieced together - not quite enough exposition or inner monologue to flesh out the action. It put a bit of distance between me and the characters at first.

After the first few chapters, however, the writing tightened up considerably. As the story progressed, the author seemed more relaxed and better able to "show not tell".

The suspense, the characters' backstories, and the growing tension between Tony and Ryan as the case continued was well-handled. There were some positively lovely scenes between Tony and Ryan, so despite it's choppy start, this one's definitely a keeper!

Tony Costa is a homicide detective that is investigating a series of murders of blue-eyed, blonde-haired young men that look a lot like the vice cop that he is dating. Ryan Nilsson is happy to assist in the homicide investigation when he is asked by Tony's Captain. Tony is not happy that his lover is going to be in harm's way but there's no way he can say no without admitting his feelings about the other cop and Tony is not ready to come out of the closet yet.

I thought this was a good book and I really liked Tony and Ryan. They had a great connection and the mystery was good. A nice first book in a series.
