Unraveling the Threads of Fate

Rate this book
Alex

Some people are born lucky.

Then there’s me, destined to be loved by the man who knows my darkest secret.

My gift has followed me my entire life—the ability to see the threads of fate. I can see the red thread tying together two people destined to love one another.

But my gift has another side to it. A darker side.
I can also see a simple black thread tied to the fingers of those who aren’t aware of it, connecting them to the person destined to kill them. And when I look down at my own finger, I can see the red thread stretched over to Bishop King. The man who is my soul mate.

But then why is the black thread also wrapped around our fingers?

Bishop is sweet and caring, and I can’t stop my heart from loving him. I just need to thwart fate before it separates us forever.

Bishop

I swore to never let myself be drawn back into Alex’s world, but the man is funny and charming and the moment we’re together I fall back into the familiarity we shared as teenagers.

I know this time is different; he’s hoping that I can help him walk through his dreams to figure out how an innocent girl is going to die.

While his dreams tell of the future, mine allow us to find the truth. But what happens when we save a life and change fate–will it affect our own future? I can’t keep myself from falling for Alex, but what if helping him leaves one of us dead?

Unraveling the Threads of Fate is a standalone romance with action, mystery, humor, and a happy ending.

This story was fun and I enjoyed it, but it didn't completely blow me away.

I loved getting a peek into when Alex and Bishop were friends during their teenage years and the events that led to their eventual decade-long separation.

And how they reunited and, largely, with only a few small hiccups, continued on with their friendship, as though no time at all had passed.

[My take on snarky, street-smart Alex...]

[My take on rich, confident Bishop...]

I mostly enjoyed the on-page time with Alex's little sister, Cali, and her friends, who were present, but not annoyingly omni-present.

And I also liked how both of their really shitty fathers actually got by the end of the story.

The drawbacks, for me at least, were that the banter felt a bit forced at times, tiptoeing into corny territory; and toward the end of the book, the mystery of who was responsible for the black death threads felt slightly muddled, so I had to pay super-close attention to every little detail.

Oh, and the one thing that made me a wee bit nuts was that nobody seemed to think of actually FOLLOWING one of the Black Murder Threads back to The Big Bad Killer™, which I found to be a real head scratcher with the plot.

So yeah, I liked the story quite a lot, but didn't fall head over heels for it the same way that I have for so many of the author's previous books and I'd rate it at around 3.5 stars.

❗️❗️Trigger warnings: mentions of drug use and overdose, child neglect, and attempted murder

Alex and Bishop come from two completely different worlds, yet they met as teenagers and formed an unlikely friendship until one fateful night tore them apart. They meet again 13 years later, and Alex realizes that not only is Bishop his fated soulmate, but he is also the one who will end up killing him. Alex would like to stay away from Bishop, but he needs his help to understand what his ability is showing him to be able to save his sister's friend's life, and many others as Alex keeps seeing black thread appearing all around him.

There were a few flashbacks, but the mix of chapters happening now, and chapters being flashbacks, and the way the flashbacks slowly allowed us to finally understand what happened between Bishop and Alex all those years ago reminded me a little bit of Vicious by VE Schwab and how every flashback showed us a little more of the rift between Victor and Eli and the way they got there.

One thing that I kept wondering though, was why Alex and Bishop didn’t try to just follow a black thread until it lead them to the killer when Alex started seeing the threads appearing on his students’ hands. I understand that the killer behind the attack Alex kept dreaming about remained a mystery, because unless Alex met with one of the victims while they had the black thread around their finger, there was nothing he could do, but it would not have been too hard to follow the threads he could see at school in the hope of discovering the killer’s identity… Just saying…

The world-building is kept quite simple as it happens in our present time. The only difference is that some people have abilities and because of that, everyone is being tested as a kid or teenager, to figure out who has an ability, what the ability is, and asses the level of the ability (meaning: deciding who needs to be monitored, who can be useful to the government, and who is potentially a threat).

The humor was more subdued in this book when compared to other Alice Winters’ series, but I am not complaining. While I love some of her crazier and OTT characters with all my heart, it was refreshing to have a character that has humor and wits, yet is not as silly and intense as Finn or Leland. Alex has this more mature vibe that comes with the fact that he had to raise a child, and I loved it. Alex is street-smart and snarky at times, but he is also determined to do everything to take care of his sister and assure her a bring future. He has a dark past and did some questionable things to survive, but I would not even classify him as a morally grey character. He is a good, good man with a golden heart and he is trying his best to help people around him and keep his family safe, and away from his darker past.

Bishop is the typical sheltered, rich but lonely boy in the flashbacks, and it’s easy to see why he latched on to Alex, just as it is easy to see why Alex relied on him so much as a teenager. I adored how even as a grown-up, Bishop remained sheltered and had no idea how to operate basic appliances in his house, or how to do things “the mundane way”, but he was aware of his shortcomings and was making fun of it. He also made the effort to learn and to become more approachable and less of a sheltered daddy’s boy over the years, making him very likable and making his relationship with Alex believable despite the huge difference in their backgrounds, upbringings, and financial situations.

The romance could be described as a friend-to-lover I guess since Alex and Bishop were friends as teenagers. They lost contact for many years, but it didn’t take long for them to pick up where they left things when they met again as adults, except this time they had the maturity and confidence to act on their feelings and see where it lead them. They are sweet and cute together, and the fact that they were friends before provided them with a (mostly) strong base for their relationship, allowing the author to develop it in only one book, without making it feel like an insta-love or forced romance.

I also absolutely adored Alex and Calie’s strong bond. Alex was so strong to raise a child as his own when he was only a teenager, and I admire him for that. I also love how those two love each other so fiercely. They would do anything for each other, and it shows. Alex loves Calie as if she were his child, and Calie knows how lucky she is to have had someone like Alex to care for her and raise her.

MM Romance
Fantasy Fated Mates
3 Stars ⭐️

For whatever reason I just cannot seem to focus lately and I’m not reading as much because of it and then when I do read, I’m just mehhh about it. I’ve been wanting to read Alice Winters for awhile now after enjoying her short story in the Never Have I Ever Anthology and since my attention span is absolute garbage, this was perfect as it’s easy breezy yet intriguing enough to keep me coming back to it. However, while it held my attention for the most part, I couldn’t quite connect with the storyline or the characters. Is it me and my shit mood or the book? No idea so maybe don’t rely too much on my review. 😂😂

This is a fantasy romance about people who look normal but have supernatural “gifts” like being able to manipulate others into doing things or like the main character, Alex, the ability to see threads of destiny. Alex sees strings on people that connect to others and if they are red it means they are soulmates but if they are black, it means one of them will kill each other at some point. Once he sees a black thread on a person, he will have a dream detailing how this person dies and while he’s tried to intervene and save people, it almost always backfires and sets off a chain of events that seem to do more harm than good.

I really liked this concept and I cannot imagine what a burden it would be to see the future yet not be able to intervene without catastrophic results. This part really worked for me and held my interest. What didn’t work for me was everything else. I love banter but this was too much for me and it became OTT when the main characters didn’t just banter with each other but every single other person in this. It got to the point where I just wanted them to have a normal conversation instead of constant jokes especially when the jokes were so bad and their POVs were hard to tell apart because of it. Since Alex and Bishop knew each other as teens, a lot of this book is flashbacks detailing their past and those scenes mixed with Alex’s dreams made it a bit confusing trying to remember which time period I was in. The chain of events they are trying to change became quite ridiculous at times and took away from the romance. I wanted to feel they were soulmates instead of just knowing they were because of the red thread and the sex scenes were kind of mehhh due to the lack of connection I felt towards them.

However, I’d be open to reading something else by this author though so if anyone has any recommendations, let me know. 💗

Michael Ferraiuolo always does a great job.

4.5

Unravelling the Threads of Fate appears to be a standalone and is a highly absorbing read. It asks the question, what would you do if you could change fate?
I loved where it left off since it gives a highly satisfying ending.
Alex is a fantastic main character. He's got the trademark Winters humour but it isn't wacky or ott. He's also more of a morally grey character having done things in his past to survive.
Bishop is adorable. He's very sheltered and lonely in the flashback chapters.
Their connection isn't reliant on the threads, with Alex only confirming it after they've reconnected.
I really enjoyed the flashback chapters and side characters like Alex's sister, Cali and Bishop's dad, Edward.

Not what I expected

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a die hard Alice Winters fan. I own all of the books in ebook, audio, and paperback versions, so when I say that this was not what I was expecting to read, then I really mean it.

It took me almost a month to finish this. Its not bad, but it doesn't flow very well and did not suck me into the story. I finally got into it around the time we flashed back to what happened the day that led to this couple no longer seeing each other when they were teens. The way Bishop just tossed Alex to the curb almost made me dnf. Teens or not, someone getting hurt that badly deserves at least a hospital visit. I don't buy the whole "it was good that we broke up" junk. They were fated mates, for goodness sake.

Speaking of that, the flashback sections were not my favorite. I know that it was to explain their previous connection, but the drawn out way of how it was done slowed down the action. Also two frigging sex scenes??

I'm going to forget that epilogue, where I found out that I missed the whole merging of their lives together.

I will get this is audio cause I won't be able to resist it.

It's an okay book, it you want to read some mystery with a mm romance together this is your book, this is a more serious book, I mean we still have the customary silliness we come to expect from Alice's books but in a more serious tone!

Oh.My.Heart. The stress. THE STRESS! This book was so good, but sooo stressful to me! I think for the last 30% of the book my heart was in my throat. My cousin called me when I had about 8% left and I think that was a good thing- made it so I could actually take a breath or two.
I love how Ms. Winters has really kept me on edge with her last few releases, particularly this one and the Medium Trouble series.
Unraveling the Threads of Fate was a unique, intriguing read and I adored the characters!
I don't know how I'd handle it, if I had Alex's "gift" and could see the threads of peoples fates- it would be so overwhelming to me. I'm glad Alex had Bishop to help him get through the hard parts.

I liked the flashback chapters, learning about Alex's upbringing and how things spiraled out of control for him, and getting to see the start of his and Bishop's friendship, but man some of it was tough going. I felt so sad for Alex and all he endured, but kudos to him for never leaving Cali behind, what an amazing big brother! His relationship with Cali was so special, she's so lucky to have a brother like him, he really did everything to make sure she had a good life.

Unraveling the Threads of Fate had its humorous moments, but it wasn't as wacky and quirky and zany in the way many Alice Winters books are. Don't get me wrong, there are some definite laugh out loud moments, but the plot leans a bit more towards the more serious side, considering Alex's childhood, and what he and Bishop were dealing with now, so I appreciated that the humor was kind of scaled back, if you will!

I enjoyed this, but it was a bit too similar to Chevy and Seneca's books for me.

Would have preferred a bit more drama and emotional impact, because everything felt pretty easily resolved in the end - even the hospital with Bishop felt pretty low tension, I expected to cry but I just didn't...

I wanted to know if Alex ever gets tested for his gift or if there were any repercussions, and also if he ever gets guardianship of Cali. They were referred to so many times but nothing ever came of either situation which was a bit disappointing.

Well.. I have patiently waiting for this book to come out on audio for the past couple months and when it did yesterday i snatch it up so fast.

Michael Ferraiuolo’s narrations were fantastic as always, buuuuuuuuut to me this story isn’t as good as other Alice Winters books i have read.

Alex and Bishop were alright, but i didn’t feel as much of a connection with then as other characters she has written. I feel like this book didn’t flow as well either. Idk i think i hyped this too much in my head and when i read it i was a bit let down..it always happens to me..

I was also a tad bored with it, it didn’t keep me as hooked as i would have liked, and while the premise was great, this didn’t execute.

Oh well i am looking forward to the third “Demon Magic” book (narration hopefully coming out next month or september), those books are bomb and Greg Boudreaux is amazing with those. Honestly Alice Winters chooses the best narrators.

5+stars. Loved this book. Fun, entertaining, super interesting paranormal story with mild angst outside the relationship. The MCs have history in their teens, so there is some second-chance elements in here. Bishop is unapologetically wealthy and the rich/poor storyline is so fantastically well done, such great jokes and conversations. The dialogue is awesome, simply perfection. Great cast of lovely side characters.

Bishop is an incredible character and the banter in this book is super next level awesome. Alice Winters is the author of one of my all time favorite series: The Hitman’s Guide. A must read for anyone looking for silly, fun entertainment and over the top shenanigans.

Paranormal, m/m, vers, HEA, rich/poor, second chance.

First standalone I've read from Alice Winters. It was funny, though not as much as her other books, and this one had a really sad backstory.

I liked both Alex and Bishop, I thought their banter was great, and I loved Alex and Callie's relationship.
The "gifts" were well done, and while I felt the book could've cut some of the middle parts, I mostly liked the plot too.

This was so freaking good. I would love more, but it appears that it's a not going to be part of a series. Alex is able to see both soulmate threads as well as if someone is going to kill someone else. Soulmates are red & death is black. Alex & Bishop were teenage friends. Alex from the wrong side of the tracks & Bishop from a wealthy family. Alex had a horrible childhood & ended up leaving his POS father & took his baby sister with him & has raised her. When Alex & Bishop are reunited later in life, Alex finds out that he they are soulmates & that Bishop will kill him. Bishop can walk dreams and together they try to save several people that they run into. Even though he sees that Bishop is going to kill him, he isn't going to walk away from their love.

I rec'd an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review

I knew going into this that I was going to love it, because there hasn't been a book that Alice Winters wrote that I haven't adored.

Alex and Bishop's story shot right to the top of one of my favorite reads of the year!

I've always been a complete sucker for the Red Thread Of Fate trope, and when I realized that one of my favorite authors wrote an entire book about it? Well, sign me up and call me excited.

It really didn't disappoint. There was something about this being a standalone (though I would 5000% take more books in this universe with these two, please?) that made the story one of my favorites so far. The romance is top-notch, the action is amazing. I spent an enormous majority of this book tempted to flip to the back to make sure that everyone got the HEA that I knew they were going to get. My anxiety was through the roof in a good way, because the tension was that spot on.

And the humor... I can't with how funny Alex is. He's got this sarcastic, just a bit jaded humor that I've come to really love and expect when reading an Alice Winters book. Bishop is a whole new can of hilarious, though. I usually find rich guys to be a little snooty and not my taste... but Bishop has a weird way of making it... wholesome? And hilarious, we can't forget hilarious. I can and always do appreciate a novel that doesn't have excessive relationship drama, and this delivered that! The plot was so intense that I honestly wasn't sure if I could handle that on top of it.

Speaking of the plotline for this book, it was amazing. I'm really big on my books having romance, but I would have read the book for the plot and concept alone. It was so interesting, and I really enjoyed that it continued to delve into the past to link it to the present. The entire concept of a world where some people are gifted and some people aren't is a fun one to play around with, and seeing how these gifts help the story unfold kept me guessing! When each gifted person has something unique to them, it's impossible to guess how it's going to play into the conclusion of the book!

As always, 10/10 I would recommend this to anyone who wants something good, plot driven, and full of romance, sass, and amazing writing! I can't wait to see what Alice writes next, and I'm going to cross my fingers that we see more of these characters someday!

A Joyfully Jay review.

Any book from Alice Winters is a treat and I am a super fan of the author’s work. But every once in a while, one of her books just really hits me even more than the others and Unraveling the Threads of Fate just drew me in and wouldn’t let go. This story is fascinating and twisty and perfectly complex without being overwhelming, and has just the right dose of Alice Winters’ humor to tie it all together. I really loved every minute of it and just tore through this story.

Winters sets things up intensely right from the start, revealing that Alex’s love and death threads both tie to the same man, a man he loved in the past as a teen. Then, on top of that, Alex suddenly finds out that one of his sister’s friends is fated to die, and he knows he must do something, anything to stop it. So we have excitement from the very beginning and it just escalates from there.

Only Alice Winters could make me laugh so hard at the banter and the snark while telling me a story about someone who can see the threads that mean who you will love and who will kill you. Bishop and Alex come from two completely different worlds and haven’t seen each other in thirteen years. It was a bit of a mess, to put it mildly, but now they are getting a second chance. Alex just has to figure out how to prevent his soulmate from ending his life. This story can also make you question what really is fate and what happens to the future when you change it. Oh but it is so good and I have to recommend that you read it. Just be ready to laugh out loud and to question the sanity of the author who keeps coming up with this stuff. 😜😆❤️

All the rage in London

“There’s something reassuring about knowing that he’ll always be mine.
As long as I can stop the black thread.”

Gah, what a thrilling, captivating, and fascinating ride this was. To know you’ve a second chance with the love of your life, fated love nonetheless, but it’s all shadowed by the dark threads following you. It’s a brilliant premise and I was hooked from the first. Did I enjoy the snark? Of course, I mean who doesn’t, but it was the deeply touching romance between Alex and Bishop, the protective love Alex has for his sister, and the riveting mystery of it all that won my heart. There’s something so amazing about this book that it has me at a loss for words, but I a thousand percent love it. Threads, paths, choices, fate…call it what you will but I’m destined to love Bishop and Alex. In the words of Cali: they make me smoopy.

Alex has the ability to see read threads - those that tie soul mates together. But he also is unfortunately able to see the dark side of that, black threads that tie those who will be murdered together but he is unable to tell who is the victim and who is the murderer. Bishop is also gifted and has the ability to dream walk.

Alex and Bishop were teenage friends from completely different sides of the tracks who were pulled apart at seventeen after tragic circumstances. Thirteen years later they are reunited unexpectedly and Alex is completely shocked to realize they share both red AND black threads. Once reunited, they try and stop murders Alex becomes aware of due to his gift while Alex also tries to figure out what could be the cause of his and Bishop’s black thread.

The story is unique and definitely kept me guessing about what exactly was going to happen in relation to their black thread. This book is dual POV and time jumps back and forth between the present and the past from their first meeting leading up to the events that pulled them apart and the immediate aftermath. Unraveling the Threads of Fate is sort of in the same universe as Seneca and Chevy in regards to humans with gifts and the history of everyone being government tested as children. Great fun. I am never bored or let down by an Alice Winters book and this was no exception. Quintessential Alice snark and sassiness and I totally wanted to cuddle teenage Alex. That poor poor man was really out through the wringer. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

If I could make this a 6 star I would.

This book, it is my new favourite from Alice. Alex and Bishop are her best characters yet in my opinion.
Alex has the air of someone who is just done with the hand they’ve been dealt. Bishop is just this big teddy bear who has an innocence about him that shows his sheltered, Privilege upbringing.
This book is in dual POV, with flashbacks to their childhood. This give a well rounded view of their lives and these characters.

In typical Alice fashion there is humour and action along with mystery that keeps you gripped. Seriously so many twists and turns.
What I especially like about this book is it’s very romantic.
Really like Edward and Bishop’s relationship.

I had such a book hangover when this finished. I wanted to keep reading about this pair!

This is wonderful original romance with two fun, loveable main characters. Alex is very witty and full of fun and has a “gift”. He endured a very dysfunctional childhood that had my heart hurting for him at times. Bishop is also witty and fun and is a very caring person. Even though his family is extremely wealthy his childhood was very lonely.

Circumstances had them crossing paths as teens and then unexpectedly reconnecting 13 years later. Setting them on a course that involves attempting to change the fate of many people, being embroiled in a mystery from the past, romancing each other with copious amounts of humour and sweetness before achieving a hard earned HEA.

I loved the originality of this well crafted and intriguing plot. That, with the strong main characters and interesting side characters kept me fully engaged and entertained from start to finish.

This book was hard to follow at times; the characters often sounded the same which made it hard to track who was saying or doing what. Also, the supernatural element/story plot didn't have the great pay off I was hoping for. Not a bad story, per say, but a little "meh" for me.

This is one of those where I enjoyed multiple small things about the book but did not overwhelmingly love it, because I hated the overarching plot.

Without the thread stuff, red or black, I'd have rated this 4/5 stars. As a romance between Alex and Bishop, it's the quintessential hilarious Alice Winters romance.

When you overlay the thread plot, it goes a lot of places without really going anywhere and just tampers down the zhuzh.

ENG- So well well well... well I really like the Asian legend of the threads of fate and as I really like the pen of Alice Winters, I was eager to start this novel. I would also like to thank the author for this SP.

Of course, I really liked this novel. It's been a while since the author offered us a stand alone and I must say that I really liked this format. Of course, if Alice Winters decides to write a sequel I will be just as happy to read it, but this novel is self-sufficient and has a real end.

The universe presented is rather nice. This is our current universe except that some people have gifts. They are tested, listed and classified, but that's about it. There isn't much mention of the different gifts that exist or where they come from but everyone is aware that some people have them and some don't.

History is divided between today and before. The "Before" chapters intersperse with the current story and allow us to understand what happened between Alex and Bishop in the past and help set up the plot.

I really had a good time reading. I liked following Alex and Bishop in their investigations to save their loved ones. I found that this novel mixed some elements of the author's previous novels (the part of traveling in the "dreams" of the In the Mind series and the part of trying to save people before their death happens from her series Medium Trouble) while giving us a new universe.

The characters are very endearing and I really liked the relationship between Alex and Bishop which in the end is very simple, it's also good when there is no unnecessary drama. The humor is also a little less present than in his previous novels but we still have a very, very good time and nothing is winded or too much.

In summary, a rather nice novel by an author that I still love so much, I have the impression that she has slightly set back her usual traits (excessive humor, rather clichéd characters) and that's okay more than good!

OMG Alice!!! This book is fantastic!! Alex and Bishop were a delight to read!! In this story some people have a gift, each person is test so they can determine each gift and how dangerous that person can be. Alex is a wonderful person and after everything he has been through is could become a teacher and have been a parent to his sister, he has a difficult time as a teen and I hate watching struggling with everything he has to endure. Alex gift allows him to see the threads of fate, he can see the red threads tying two people together destined to love but also have the ability to see the black thread connecting the person destined to kill them.

Oh surprise when Alex look at his finger and see the red thread stretched over to Bishop King his childhood friend how is he man that is my soul mate but then there’s also the black thread also wrapped around them….. this is getting good!!!!!! Bishop is a sweetheart, I love that he wants to care of Alex and do everything for him… and use is money for everything! Lol… I love them!!!!!

Bishop is back into Alex’s world, he can help to be drawn to Alex. Both fall back into the easy friendship they shared as teenagers. He also has a gift that allows him to walk into other persons dream. He is helping Alex walk through his dreams to figure out how to stop the murder of his sister’s friend. What happened next is changing everything that may affect their future… they have to try to stop a serie of events that may result and one of the dead. I love every minute of this book! The banter and the sarcasm is awesome, Alice’s make her books full of mysteries, action, a great romance and super sexy! Alex and Bishop are hilarious and adorable!!!! I have the best time reading this book!!!
Highly recommended!

DNF @ 52%/ read 22 chapters

I usually love Alice Winters book, but I was so, so bored. The set up is great -- some people have little gifts and they have to get registered, but Alex wasn't registered. Great! But, it doesn't mean anything except he can't tell the police when something is wrong. Honestly, what was the point of not registering earlier? We also don't see people with gifts treated different or even learn about them at all. On that note, the world-building is practically nonexistent.

Then the plot, I'm halfway through the book and have no idea what this book is about expect Bishop and Alex are destined to love each other and possibly one of them will kill the other. Oh, and they go around trying to keep people from being killed. Considering there isn't really a build up of the relationship -- it honestly goes from hostile to friends in about 3 chapters then dating in the next-- I wasn't invested in them at all.

ALSO Alex says he didn't finish high school, so how is he a high school teacher? You're telling me he was able to get his GED, earn the money from college, attend college, AND raise his sister? I know 13 years is a long time and it is doable, but... I would like more of their background I guess??

So, no plot, things don't 100% make sense, and I haven't been convinced to care about these characters. Such a bummer.

Hilarious as ever

I’ve read most of Alice’s books and they have two things in common
1. I don’t stop reading till I’ve finished them
2. I spent about half of the time reading them trying to compose myself enough to actually be able to read. They are that funny.

I loved the relationship between Bishop and Alex, but honestly the scenes with Cali were probably my favourite. They reminded me of my relationship with my younger sister. I could relate to Alex so much in these moments.
I also loved the snippets of their past.

*Spoiler Alert or at least I think so*

There’s a few things I’m still wondering about though like does Alex ever get tested and if he does, what happens?
And how did Edward break up with his fiancé? Was he just like “I know someone who can see the red strings of fate and he told me you’re not my soulmate, so you need to go”( in Alice’s style, of course)????

The premise of this book was interesting and a great read but what made the book was the characters. They had all the snark that I expect in an Alice Winters book but so much more! One thing I almost always have with characters is I like one more than the other. Sometimes it is by a huge margin and sometimes it is small. In Unraveling the Threads of Fate I can say there is no way I could choose. I adore Alex and Bishop. Separate they are interesting characters that I would like however when they are together they feed off of each other and the banter was what I would call intimate snark! They are so suited for each other it makes my heart hurt that they spent so much time with this unrealized but it makes it all the sweeter now. I highly recommend this book for laughs, intrigue, and all the feels!

When I started this, I was so excited. It had the same kind of serious energy that Dear Cassius had, and I loved the heck out of that book. I haven't stumbled upon a book like that from Alice Winters since, so hence the excitement. That only lasted roughly 40% or so, and then it went downhill for me. The book fell into that OTT humor I absolutely mention in every review for Winters' books.
I just...wanted serious, it felt serious for a bit, and it took it away with the humor that was too much.

There's only so much I can say on that. I kept reading, because I was invested in finding out what happens with the foretold deaths, and I also wanted more about Harvey. The flashbacks to when Alex and Bishop were teens really helped, those were always serious. The ending did end up picking up for me, and I loved the big reveal, but it just didn't make me happy either. Even though it was a great reveal, it happened way too fast. There was a huge information dump, and then it was covered up by lots of humor in the hospital as if nothing happened. Then bam, it's three years later, more humor, end of story.

I guess I wanted more, from what it appeared to be in the beginning. That's about all I can say on that.
