This series keeps getting more and more interesting. We’re at the fourth book, and it just keeps getting better and better. Poor Abbie is thrown into another murder mystery, but this one cuts a little too close to home for a friend whose magic is thrown into disarray over everything. This latest addition is filled with love, laughter, tears, mystery, magic…really just a whole bunch of interesting developments. We get closer to the big, bad, and the gang also might have a new ally in the coming fight. I love how there’s a whole bunch of things just coming together, and I can’t wait to see how everything, and everyone fit. A fun, action-filled, paranormal mystery with a tiny bit of romance thrown in. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Book 4 is staged during the Covid epidemic. Whether Vedam changed her original story, merely wrote it in, or started during, I don't know. But it does influence the story heartily. Abbie, being the EMT that she is, has decided to temporarily move in with Judith in her Nan's home and let the kids stay with Nanny Chan and her parents in Abbie's house.

On the one hand it creates a very realistic picture for us readers, having all been through it. On the other, it gives the kids a minimal role this time and, well...I read books to escape my own world, and quite frankly wasn't a fan to see it. Especially because the kids' role was severely diminished as a result.

But that's a very personal, subjective thing and won't change much about how I perceived this book in general. And perhaps you appreciate it for the extra horror and more adults, who knows. On to the story!

Death Swipes Right is full of surprises. The main story revolves around several things: the brutal murder of Talin's aunt, a serial killer using a spirit, and of course we can't forget about the overall arc, the London bombing & Abbie's upcoming battle with The Immortal.

With the infuriating and incompetent DCI Turner on the case of Auntie Niara's murder - seriously, did that woman get her position with a loaf of bread? - the wrong person, namely Talin with Abbie as accomplice, is suspected of bashing in the poor woman's head.

It is obvious our friends will need to start their own investigation carefully and quietly. The "incompetent detective derailing the hero(es)' plans" isn't my favourite trope in books, because it is done to death. However, it is cliché for a reason; I was properly frustrated and angry. One advantage: this mess gave Talin's uncle and Abbie's heartthrob DCI Callum Radford the opportunity to show he's always on the right side... and scary smart.

Meanwhile a person the Standard Bearers have been researching as a person of interest in the bombing, as well as being potentially The Immortal pops up again. He's both what they thought and not what they thought at all. What's more: he's not alone! As a result of this person entering the stage we get a few answers on who is behind the bombings and why. Abbie and her Standard Bearers now stand on the cusp of an extremely important decision, and might have set another step on the road to making Abbie's Guardian prophecy come true (the one more explained in book 3 and added to in this volume).

The above, as well as Callum smartly researching a little more than just murders from the sidelines, is part of the "Surprise Package" of Death Swipes Right. Another one is what happens to Talin when he discovers his auntie dead on the ground. The constable's outpour of grief is so major, he 'breaks' through something in his mind, making an earlier unknown power upgrade pour out. And with it, the whole city block is affected. How? Not going to spoil thàt surprise, but it gives the author such marvellous opportunities to play with! She does so aplenty in this volume, and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next.

In an earlier review I've spoken about Vedams ability to give this series a sense of comradery and cutenes on top of several ethical and moral messages despite murders, kidnappings and evil overlords. Creating that feeling is no mean feat. But something I've skipped over so far is the fact that she's managed to write up an equally realistic group of friends, humans and magicals, from a variety of backgrounds. We have India, Trinidad, China, The Middle East, and of course England.

The author hasn't shirked the topic of racism - think when councilman Beckwith was eager to separate Abbie and the kids, just because they're from India - but is also great in explaining differences (and sameness) among the group through and throughout their adventures. First off, it creates an opportunity for readers to easily identify with one or more Standard Bearers. But secondly, and more importantly for the story, the characters' belief systems and cultural backgrounds keep playing large roles in the story arcs. That is seen in this book again when a Trinidadian legend comes to life.

So far Vedam has only tapped the surface with the magical powers developing, as well as the wide array of deities, myths, cultural legends that have come into play. I'm grabbing book 5 soon, but I'm slowly beginning to wonder if the well tapped won't give us mere drops with "just" 8 books in this series.

But who knows... so far Vedam pleasantly surprises me with every new installment, so who says that can't be done in the long run? Otherwise I vote for spin-offs: after having once again read an Outside the Circle book in one go I can definitely stand to read much more about these seven friends in another way.

4+ stars.

To every dark cloud, there is supposed to be a silver lining - i'm sure that that was hard for Abbie and Talin to remember as they did their best to avoid being charged with murder by someone who definitely was not a friend. This novel touched on a number of social justice issues (for example, the criminal law system, mental illness and the side-effects of immigration) but what held my attention more than the storyline (which normally would have been enough to keep me focussed on reading) were the emotional storms permeating the story. The characters felt such sadness for multiple reasons, but that sadness was lightened by the author's deftly woven threads of joy. The characters and the mystery are wonderfully relatable and worthy of my attention, but it was how the author wove the emotional issues that enthralled me. Though containing less darkness, action or adrenaline-inducing thrills, this particular novel had the feel of Ilona Andrews' Innkeeper novels. Fans of Ilona Andrews might want to consider reading this as a lighter and cozier alternative to her normal works.

In the midst of Covid the Standard Bearers must solve a deeply personal crime. Talin’s auntie has been murderer and he and Abbie are considered the prime suspects by a rather narrow minded DCI. The situation turns complex when the group discover Trini men have been killed and it all ties into a legend of Mama D’Leau. Trying to stay safe and clear their names is hard enough without a pandemic and separation to contend with. But fear not the Standard Bearers are on the case and nothing stops them from protecting and serving justice.
This was a delightful read. There was so much of a wonderful a rich culture that I’m sure many readers are unfamiliar with. I liked that the pandemic and its isolation, the toll that took on all of us was included. While it changed our world it didn’t stop the heroes from getting their jobs done, just like in the story. Enjoyed the creative ways the group used to stay connected. Super excited that we learned more about Talin and what he can do. Never a dull moment in the life of a Grimm or the story detailing said life!.

In this story the mystery hits home with Talin's auntie being murdered. Throw in a goddess (or two), a seemingly vengeful spirit, one immortal, and accusations of murder, and you've got a pretty compelling story! The SB really came together for this one despite being separated by Covid restrictions.
I loved the growth that Talin was able to have with this big change; he really gets to take a hard look at what he wants in life. Abbie and Callum also get to spend some time together (6 feet apart type together).
I liked the world building that happens in this story and how the additional details will later impact Abbie's Grimm status and her Standard Bearers crew.

This is the 4th book in the series and I recommend reading the other three in order to understand all the events that happen in this story.

Abbie and the Standard Bearers are back and so is a murderer. Trouble come knocking again and the team must solve the case and deal with the usual everyday things at the same time. Trouble, action, insanity, and both sad and funny scenes make the story fun to read and easy to enjoy. Had to see who the bad guy was and what was going on considering all the craziness.

I loved this latest Standard Bearers story. It features all the usual heroes and introduces a whole new set of supernatural characters an deities to the mix. Good guys, bad guys, dating service users and Trinidadans transplanted to the British Isles. There's plenty of action, a hint of romance, a serial killer and a whole lot of clues to track downs - everything i've come to expect from Shereen Vedam.
A good read and a very satifactory advancement on a great series.

This is the fourth book in the series and it is just as good as the previous three books. You can read this as a standalone, but it is better if you read the previous books.

I love all the characters. New Goddesses appear in this story. A murder must be solved. Romance is in the air. Danger lurks around every bend. There are twists and turns and things that you don't expect. I love this series. This book is good and leaves me wanting to know what will happen next. I would highly recommend this story for it is a really good one.

Listen, I thought dating apps were dangerous before, but Shereen Vedam just took "ghosting" to a whole new level! Book 4 in this absolutely addictive series proves that like a fine wine or a really good cheese, this story just keeps getting better with age.

Poor Abbie! This woman can't catch a break. She's basically a murder magnet at this point - I'm starting to think she should update her LinkedIn to include "Professional Crime Scene Discoverer." But when this latest mystery hits too close to home and her friend's magic starts acting up like a glitchy smartphone, you know things are about to get REAL.

Vedam has somehow managed to create the perfect recipe: take one part cozy mystery, add a generous helping of paranormal chaos, sprinkle in some romance (just enough to make you swoon but not enough to distract from the corpses), and top it off with enough magical mayhem to make Harry Potter jealous. The result? Pure literary gold!

The gang is finally getting closer to the Big Bad (and no, I don't mean my ex), plus there's a potential new ally joining the supernatural fight club. It's like watching all the pieces of a really twisted jigsaw puzzle finally start clicking together, except some of the pieces are on fire and others are trying to eat you.

Fair warning: This book will make you laugh, cry, and question why you ever thought online dating was a good idea. The action is non-stop, the mystery had me guessing until the very end, and the character development is chef's kiss perfection.

If you're not reading this series, you're doing yourself a disservice. Trust me, swipe right on "Death Swipes Right" - it's a match made in heaven (or possibly hell, depending on how you feel about murder mysteries)!

Highly recommend - just maybe don't read it while actually using dating apps. The irony might kill you. Literally.

The latest case hits a little close to home when our heroine ends up as one of the suspects. She and her partner are going to have to figure this one out quickly as she does not look good in orange.

This is book four the series. While this does build on the previous story, it does pretty well as a standalone. The essentials are covered early on.

This is an urban fantasy story with ghosts, demons and other critters. The story is well written, easy to read and very engaging. I liked our heroine right from the start and the more I learned, the more I liked her. The story itself moves at a solid pace, drawing you in right at the start and never letting go. There is plenty of action, mystery and intrigue so that you are never quite sure what it coming next. Overall, it all blends into a fun story that leaves you anxious for more. Bring on the next book, please.

Highly recommended.

I enjoy this series. Abbie and the SB gang are back in an action packed book filled with magic and surprises. It is always fun to see which new Grimm artifact she will use and which god and/or goddess Nica will contact. I love the story, the eclectic mix of characters and pantheons.

This is such a good series. Our Grimm Abbie finds herself once again neck deep in a murder mystery only this time she’s a suspect along with Talin. It’s an intriguing and captivating read, filled with action, danger, drama and mystery. It had me laughing in places and tearing up in others and it had me enthralled from start to finish.

While I liked some of the supernatural elements the pace was a little all over the place. The beginning and ending were very engaging but the middle was a little slow but I think that’s typical in mysteries.

Abbie is still looking for ansers into the bombing that killed her friends and fellow EMTs, to that end she asks her electormagnetic mage frien Talin for his help. Unfortunately, before they can delve deeper into that incident, they will find Talin's beloved aunt murdered and become prime suspects.
