Attorney Talon Winter goes back to her roots to fight for her people and their land, but can she really turn her back on the criminal justice system, and the defendants who need her help?
Talon joins the legal battle to reclaim a part of her tribe's coastal lands from powerful interests intent on keeping it a yacht club for Tacoma's wealthiest denizens. It's the good fight, but it's a slow fight, filled with mountains of paperwork and countless delays. As Talon struggles to push the litigation forward, she finds herself distracted by a new man and a new case. She knows how to ignore a man, but can she sit idly by as an innocent person is railroaded into a life behind bars?
Passion fuels excellence. Talon will need to decide where her passion truly lies, so she can bring to bear the full power of her excellence.

It's a pity that what is likely the final book of Talon Winter's legal series ended up being the one I liked the least, but.... stuff like this happens. I always say that every series is entitled to have a dud in its ranks. And sometimes that applies to the last book of them all.
Oh well.
Unlike what's been the norm, not even the writing style, pace, or the actual cases (of which there are two) saved this book for me. Well, no. That's not entirely accurate. One case was definitely more interesting than the other, but unfortunately it had to share a significant amount of the spotlight with the less appealing one. And for some reason, the lawyerly antics in the less interesting case bored the crap out of me. It was nothing BUT legal babble. Oh sure, there was still some the fun bickering moments I've come to love, but even THAT was short-lived.
Sadly, if I'm not really into the cases of these books, then there really isn't much hope to win me over at all, especially if the characters themselves don't have anything to offer outside of their work that can hold my interest. And seeing as how author Stephen Penner didn't spend much time developing the personal lives or stories of his characters that I can relate to or bond with, what's there to really love anymore? Not much, I'm afraid. The same thing was done in Dave Brunelle's series, except in his case, all the cases were interesting, and Dave eventually did have an appealing growth to him as a character.
What didn't help my opinion for this go round was Talon Winter herself, who for this entry, (as well as the past two entries), has mutated into this arrogant snob of a character with a massively big head due to her skills as a lawyer. While these were initially appealing traits that I had been fond of, they lost their luster once Talon started taking them into what little personal life she had outside of her work. It's one thing to be good at your job and snarky about it, but it's quite another to belittle everyone else even in your NORMAL life for not being on that same page.
Overall, I just didn't enjoy this entry like I expected to or even wanted to. As a whole, though, the series was still more entertaining than it wasn't, with a couple of entries I rated very highly back when Talon was cooler. I'm glad to have dived into this series either way.
I enjoyed this series equally as much as the others. This particular book went a bit too far in the graphic details of the sex scenes. A couple of chapters were better suited for a romance novel than a legal thriller. This author enjoys giving his protagonists the mindset of a 16-year-old with raging hormones. Every character that enters the storyline is categorized as to their potential as a sex partner. It becomes too much after a while. I don't think of myself as a prude, but enough is enough. The courtroom drama and the determination to receive justice are sufficiently compelling to make the books worth reading.
I've now read the whole Talon Winter Legal series and can strongly recommend these novels to anyone interested in richly drawn characters, interesting stories and, especially, taught legal and courtroom dramas. Talon Winter is one of the sharpest central continuing characters you'll ever read. I've copied and pasted this review to all the Talon Winter books to try to spread the word. No need to read them in order, but I think you should.
I really enjoyed this last installment in the Talon Winter legal thrillers. In this novel Talon is working on two important cases and manages to successfully resolve them both.
Very good read exciting from start to finish. The story line is interesting with human nature tied in also, the ending was very good also. Enjoyed this series of books. Thank you Stephen Penned
