Rock Pride, Country Prejudice: A modern retelling

Rate this book
She’s hotter’n a goat’s hoof in a pepper patch.

He’s a chill Angeleno.

Her guitar strums Kentucky country.

His drums beat good ol’ rock n’ roll.

Can a handsome rocker from California and a pretty country singer from Kentucky move past their pride and prejudices and become friends, co-creators…or more?

In this fun, witty, modern-day adaption of Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice, Chaz and Darcy, two members of the hottest rock band in the country, Persuasion, are on their quest to find quiet seclusion in the middle of nowhere, Kentucky, when they cross paths with sisters, Jade and Elle Bennett, southern girls with a real talent for playin’ country music.

Attractions abound but are quickly shrouded by fallacy and judgment as the characters search for acceptance, understanding, friendship, and integrity in an industry overflowing with dishonesty and deceit.

With all the chaos that comes with a family of five girls—including a mother who will stop at nothing to see her girls in the spotlight, the maddening personality of a talent scout named Mr. Collins and the Madame of all music management…Kat de Bourgh—harmonious entertainment rises to a whole new level in Rock Pride, Country Prejudice.

From Nashville to L.A. and Kentucky to California, romance readers will love this twist on Austen’s 19th century masterpiece.

I thought the author took the classic tale and did well to apply it to a small town family with few prospects & musical asperations. The wealth in this case, is famous rock stars coming to town.

I really enjoyed the read!

This is a difficult review to write because based on the author’s previous releases she doesn’t appear to be a JAFF/Austenesque writer. She appears to be an author who happened to write an adapted & modernized version of P&P. I waffled between 3 & 4 stars for this one because of that.

As far as a P&P adaptation, it clicks all the boxes. We follow along the canon events.
The not so meet cute at the assembly, an evening at Lucas Lodge, down with the sickness at Netherfield, the ball....etc etc etc. However, the details linking the events just isn’t there. And if this modern and Google exists why wasn’t Wickham Googled? Why is Carina/Caroline so pissed? Why was E so against L going to Vegas. Why doesn’t L’s phone have location tracking on it? Why is Lady Cat so pissed off? Why is Darcy so proud? (what's his full name by the way or it just Darcy, the way Cher is Cher?)

This story left me with so many whys, whats and hows that I struggled to finish this. Add to that all of the Southern country-fried dialect - I have never read so much of this (nor heard it spoken in the 2 years that I lived in Chattanooga THAT much). You also don't really feel the depth of Darcy's attraction or his struggle with his pride. He just comes off as kind of an asshole.

I've read all of Moyes' books over the years and even though this one was not like her other ones, (I do love her historical fiction) I thought Rock Pride, Country Prejudice was a fun, quick read and a clever variation of Pride and Prejudice. Being raised in Mississippi, I recall my mama using some of those southern terms so reading them brought a smile to my face..."You're as fine as frog hair split four ways!" Made me laugh out loud.

Lots of fun

I do enjoy a modern variation and this was no exception. My attention was held throughout and the modernisation as generally pretty good and believable. The country scene is not one I know anything about at all, or indeed the American South, but nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

There was a bit of fiddling with the ages of the characters which didn't quite seem to add up to me. It left poor Mrs Bennet giving birth to her daughters with less than a year between some of them which seemed a bit harsh!

I don't follow the Jane Austen genre like the faithful do, however, I thought this book was entertaining; and as someone who lived in the South for a number of years, I thought the Southern humor hit a homerun.

Rock the Country?

This was a little too contrived for my tastes. I like moderns of P & P, but this was not the best I’ve read. It was too short for so many characters and not long enough to develop a really good story for D & E.

I didn't click with this version, some parts felt a bit forced and odd, and I didn't really believe a relationship between either Jade and Chaz or Elle and Darcy
