Murder in the 33rd Degree: The Gagnon Investigation into Vatican Freemasonry

Rate this book
Was Pope John Paul I murdered? If so, by whom, and to what end? Was the Catholic liturgy sabotaged to strip it of truth, power and beauty? If so, by whom, and to what end? Was an international plot underfoot to destroy the Vatican’s financial stability? If so, by whom, and to what end?
There was one man who knew the answers to these and many other questions plaguing the post Conciliar Church. In 1975, then Archbishop Edouard Gagnon was personally commissioned by Pope Paul VI to investigate the Vatican’s Roman Curia. This thorough investigation concluded in 1978, the “year of the three Popes.”
In Murder In The 33rd Degree, author Charles T. Murr, a close and lifelong friend of Cardinal Gagnon, gives his firsthand account of what transpired during that papal investigation. Murder In The 33rd Degree answers many questions that many people have been asking for half a century.

Years ago, I read and loved Fr. Murr’s The Godmother: Madre Pascalina, a Feminine Tour de Force. So, when my sister sent me this book, I was fairly sure I would find it interesting as well. THAT was an understatement!

In just the first few pages I was reminded of Murr’s unique and refreshingly one-one-one writing style accompanied by sketches from photos of all the main characters from his narrative.

This story focuses on 1978, sometimes referred to as, ‘The Year of the Three Popes’ when Pope Paul VI died on Aug. 6th, Pope John Paul I on September 28th and Pope John Paul II was elected on October 16th.

After Pope Paul VI’s cryptic announcement of June 29, 1972, “We have the impression that through some cracks in the wall the smoke of Satan has entered the temple of God,” he sought out senior clerics he knew he could trust – beginning with one of his closest friends – Cardinal Giovanni Benelli, Archbishop of Florence, who, in turn, looked to the Canadian-born archbishop Édouard Gagnon, former president of the Pontifical Commission on the Family and currently working with the poor in Colombia, to commence an investigation into all aspects of life in the Vatican in order to uncover the source(s) of the smoke.

It was a huge, and as it turned out, dangerous undertaking for Gagnon afflicted throughout the years-long investigation by personal and death threats, burglaries of his office, ransacking of his rooms and extreme concern for the nature of his findings and what it revealed about the overall dire status of the Church.

Then when he was finally finished with his investigation, he tried repeatedly to deliver the results to see them acted upon. Three times in fact, to each of the three successive pontiffs of that infamous year.

The author, Charles Murr, now 72, lifelong friend of the archbishop, was a young priest and driver for Gagnon at the time of these events and relates his inside knowledge of what transpired.

If you like to read about things from an inside perspective written by a gentleman priest, then this is your book.

Unfortunately, the full report compiled by Gagnon, eventually made Cardinal by Pope St. John Paul II, remains missing and has never been published.

Fr. Charles Theodore Murr has a gift for writing. I have read all of his books and enjoyed them greatly. In this book he provides more in depth information regarding what he knew of the investigation by Archbishop Gagnon, requested by Pope Paul VI, into Freemasons in the Vatican. When Pope Paul VI made the statement that the smoke of Satan had entered the Vatican, he wasn't bein facetious or over stating the problem.
Fr. Murr has requested that the Vatican make public the results of that investigation in which it appears to be very true that Freemasons were in charge of making Bishops, were involved in the total change in the Liturgy of the Mass and were also involved in the Vatican Bank.
He was privy to the man who investigated and others who were directly involved at the Vatican. I think we all know the truth of that matter, but probably not as much as we should. To bring it out in the open would only prove so many right in knowing what damage has been caused by the actions taken after Vatican II and taken by those who wished to destroy the Church.

Fr. Murr writes in a very engaging manner and I read this book in one sitting. An important, but not hysterical book. Very open and simple. If only the Vatican records would be that open.

Sheeeeesh! Pretty much what I knew already, but written in novel-like-format with more details. The ending is pretty depressing but, we must keep in mind that God has His reason for allowing all of this.
Catholic's strong in their Faith should read this - but I would not recommend to anyone who gets easily overwhelmed and who is weak in their faith. It could cause them to despair if they believe that it is true. (And it is a true account)
Contrary to the name, it is not a novel or conspiracy theory - it is merely the biographical account of a priest who lived with Fr. Gagnon, who was called by Pope Paul VI to compile a dossier of the Freemasonic goings-on inside the Church. I repeat; it is not fiction, nor was it written to scandalize or shock. It is merely a documentary.

More exciting than a Novel

We normally read fiction books to be entertained and non-fiction for information. Father Charles Murr's book "Murder in the 33rd Degree: The Gagnon Investigation into Vatican Freemasonry" is an excellent work of journalism that reads like an exciting novel. Told in the first person, he shares with the reader his personal experiences living in Rome in 1978, the year of the 3 Popes.

This was simultaneously a beautiful and heartbreaking read. I struggled with how to rate it, at first. I had originally expected this to be more of an historical account, complete with that oh so modern expectation of documentation and concrete sources. That is not the case here. This is more appropriately classified as a memoir and read within that context it was very well written. So, I would caution anyone who desires to read this to adjust your expectations and read it on its own terms. This is Fr. Murr’s experience of the events that transpired during the Gagnon investigation and “Year of Three Popes” and the role he played. It is a beautiful and tragic story of true friendship and a deep and profound love for the Catholic Church.

Wow! This was such a fascinating yet scary book to listen to. I listened to the whole book on audible and I loved the narration by Kennedy Hall! I definitely admire Fr. Murr for uncovering the dark side of the Vatican in this book! God bless Archbishop Gagnon for investigating the freemasonry and exposing some of the freemasons that were in charge of V2. No wonder V2 has been so detrimental to the Church and it's also no wonder that Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre had enemies. When you look at V2 and that it was created by a FREEMASON for Pete's sake, the consecrations at Econe were ABSOLUTELY necessary for the Bride of Christ!

I felt a compulsion to read this book when it was published because I have a fondness for Vatican conspiracy theories whether fictional or - I was going to say 'factual' but as I don't believe that any are factual I'll go with 'pseudohistorical'. If they concern Freemasons then so much the better. Unfortunately, my patience and sense of humour gave out before the end and I removed the book from my Kindle. I've added it here as a note to self that reads 'resist fringe historical compulsions in future' and placed it next to my other notes regarding 'books not to buy'. If 1 star meant 'this is garbage and not worth anyone's attention' then I'd rate it but as it is I'd rather not draw attention to the author.

Nice to have some details

I was happy to have some insight into the events as recorded in this book. I felt like I could have had all the valuable information in a much shorter format - maybe an article with key points. Much in the book was superfluous, although obviously of great sentimental value to the writer - I can appreciate, but probably wouldn’t recommend to those just trying to get insight into a period in Vatican history.

Fr. Murr's book answered so many questions, especially about the power of the Masons. Their part in the death of Pope John Paul 1 was enraging. The cowardice of Popes in allowing a complete takeover of the Church by Masonry explains the destruction of the Catholic Church, which is ongoing with Bergoglio and his apostasy, the "Synod on Synodality".
Thank God for the growth of the Traditional movement".

The book is prefaced by the author with "I am unashamedly biased" so this book was a retelling of his experience. I would consider it a memoir if it did not have fictitious conversations and embellishments such as things said in private meetings in which the author was not made privy.

However, at least 90% of what he wrote is likely 100% accurate.

It starts with Pope Paul VI commissioning Bishop Gagnon to lead a multi-year investigation into credible allegations of Masonic infiltration into the Catholic Church, specifically of a few individuals:

1. Archbishop Annibale Bugnini - Secretary for the Congregation of Divine Worship which served as the clearinghouse for any information to/from the Pope regarding liturgy.

2. Cardinal Baggio - Prefect for the Congregation of Bishops (1973-1984) which oversees the selection of new bishops around the world.

The investigation concluded and was presented to Pope Paul VI but he was in poor health, so he told Gagnon to leave it for his successor. That was the "first delivery attempt."

Paul VI soon died and John Paul I was elected. In the “second delivery attempt”, Gagnon met with him and it was determined that Bugnini (architect of the Novus Ordo Mass) had already been dealt with (exiled to Tehran, Iran) but what to do with Cardinal Baggio? It was a delicate situation with Baggio because he had dirt on everyone and had the ability to blackmail.

Allegedly, JPI told Gagnon that he was going to confront Baggio about the results of the investigation. However, Baggio's day was busy and so JPI had arranged an after hours meeting the night he died. He was Pope for only 33 days. The author doesn't assert any specific theories about who or what killed Pope John Paul I or that he didn't die of a heart attack. He just tells the reader the details as he knows and experienced them at the time (being the private driver and close friend of Gagnon).

What I found most troubling about the book was the allegation that Baggio, as the Prefect for the Congregation of Bishops, oversaw the selection and promotion of bishops around the world for over 10 years. Undoubtedly, the bishops who had been nominated on his watch reflected his own liberal, ideological views. Further, after JPI's death, Gagnon made a "third delivery attempt" with the successor Pope John Paul II. The author described the meeting as so disastrous that Gagnon submitted his resignation almost immediately after. I'm therefore left with the question: *If JPI died without addressing the Masonic infiltration problem, was it ever addressed?* JPII seemingly didn't do anything about it, preferring to leave Baggio in his position as Prefect and prompting Gagnon to resign in frustration.

Many of the assertions in this book are verifiable, and some of them are not. But I find the author's story extremely plausible. Additionally, the author is a retired priest in good standing with the Church.

On the topic of Freemasonry, I know it sounds conspiratorial. However, the Catholic Church is an avowed enemy of Freemasonry to the point that membership results in an automatic excommunication. The Church has taken it so seriously that at least 8 Popes have written papal documents relating to freemasonry beginning as far back as 1738. Catholics who feel like this theory is a step too far might be interested in the book published by TAN (the most reputable of Catholic publishers) called The Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendetta. It describes "The secret Masonic plan for destroying the Catholic Church, which Plus IX and Leo XIII asked to be published. The plan basically calls for promoting Liberalism in the Church so that Catholic leaders will foster liberal ideas to their flocks."

This book is spoken of as a memoir of Fr. Murr, and it can be called that only in a very loose sense. Certainly much of it is derived from the authors memory, and it gives a sense of how the Vatican works. It helps to show how backstabbing, shady, petty and immature some of our church hierarchy can be. Which is not new. If you read “Ratzinger was Afraid” you will see it is still that way, and if you read “The Borgia Pope” you will see it was like that yesteryear as well.

So, this book was written in the form of a novel, and some things are clearly embellished. This is where the problem comes in with using this book as a source. Due to the obvious embellishments, it is impossible to know where there may not be embellishments. Because of this I find very little worth in the book. I hate saying that because I enjoyed reading it. It was a page turner.

It feels as if I have a better sense of what happened concerning the Novus Ordo and Vatican II, but this is also a problem. Due to the embellishments does this feeling of having a better sense of what happened mirror reality? I don’t have a clue. So, this book was a deceit to me and to my subconscious which is even worse!

This is an extremely subjective book, with the author adding his imaginative creativity to fill in holes. I don’t like the book, but I enjoyed reading it. Kind of like Dan Brown’s piece of garbage, except the current author is a person of good will. Take it with a grain of salt.

Illuminating picture of the Vatican, thought there would be more

The real people in this story were fascinating, it was like reading a novel. Unfortunately it was true. A long time ago i used to think the Vatican and the church, the bride of Christ, could only be a holy institution, my eyes were opened with the paedophile scandal and with Pope Francis' reign.
Now I see how far it goes back to, I just learned about freemasonry last year and this story blew my mind! I just wish it went further, that is, what was the extent of the infiltration, how many other people were kicked out as freemasons, how did they gain power back to vote Francis in?
Anyway, a great read! God bless.

Definitely a page-turner from a priest with first-hand knowledge of the corruption of the Roman Curia. It’s well past time for the pope to “come clean” and release Gagnon’s report! The coverup of The Church to conceal Baggio and Bugnini and their membership in the Freemasons and their diabolical influence on how The Church would “take shape” after Vatican II, ostensibly to “avoid scandal”, has now blown up in the face of Church officials (as well as the faithful laity). These men (Baggio and Bugnini) were automatically excommunicated by virtue of their Freemasonic membership . . . and The Church isn’t prepared to deal with that, but now that information is so much more accessible, The Church had better be prepared!

I watched a wonderful interview with Fr. Charles Murr, and luckily I was able to get my hands on a copy right away. Another keeper. This was wonderfully written and by the end of the book I had so much love and admiration particularly for Cardinal Édouard Joseph Gagnon and Monsignor Mario Marini. Fr. Murr brought these wonderfully brave faithful men to life almost like it was happening just last week; truly an account by a very heartfelt friend and brother. There should be an assertive action to locate and release Cardinal Édouard Joseph Gagnon's 3-year investigative report on the Roman Curia.

A “must read”

For anyone trying to make sense of the confusing and world-pleasing bent of the current pontificate, look no further than Murder in the 33rd Degree. A charming and compelling narrator, Father Murr tells an accessible, if not alarming tale about some of the darkest days of the Church and of the heroes of the faith who fought to defend it. It is a clarion call to prayer, not the aimless kind uncertain of what must be done, but with knowledge and purpose to storm heaven asking “THY will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

How the Free masons infiltrated the Catholic Curia

Fr. Murr writes an amazing and exciting and "unbelievable" account of his first hand view of some pretty spectacular and incredible machinations on the part of the Catholic prelates who were also Free Masons and who negatively influenced the highest reaches of the Roman Catholic Curia. Not to be missed if you're Catholic and even if you're not. Sensational!

Fascinating first-hand account of the investigation into masonic infiltration in the Catholic Church (*not* a conspiracy theory), written by a man who was a close personal friend of the investigator Cardinal Edouard Gagnon. A subplot sheds some light on the mysterious death of Pope John Paul I, who died after one month in office.

About Archbishop Gagnon's investigation into the infiltration of Freemason's into the Catholic Church and the effect it had on the death of Pope John Paul I. Was he murdered or allowed to die through neglect. It doesn't explicitly say either way, but the interference and intimidation used to halt the investigation are troublng.

An Eyewitness to History

A truly gripping account of Vatican history from a man of God who walked its mysterious corridors. Fr. Charles Murr's account of the intricacies of the †Abp. Gagnon investigation into ecclesial Freemasonry penetrating the highest reaches of the Roman Curia reads like a thriller novel...except it's all real. I highly recommend this memoir.

It is a very good story told with dynamism but being a devout catholic it has made me very sad to read of such poor moral values in the people entrusted with Christs Church. No wonder the world is in such a state

A sobering look at the Freemason infiltration of the Catholic Church, and why it's important. Fr. Muir's book also explains a great detail about why the Church is in a crisis, one that is probably her greatest ever.

Fascinating account of the Vatican in the late 60s and mid 70s. The account of John Paul I's last days is unique and interesting, and he all but accuses very high ranking members of the Curia of murder in response to attempted reforms.

Fr Murr's personal account of Archbishop Cagnon's investigation into the Roman Curia is really well done. The important historical events in "the year of three popes" are nicely intertwined with intimate character details and Vatican politics. A good read.
