I’m giving this audiobook a 2.5 ⭐️ rating! I think if I had read it myself, I would have given it a 4 ⭐️. I did recently re listen to this book and it wasn’t as bad as it was the first time! 3.75⭐️. 6/5/24 This book is set in Washington DC and the characters are American. The narrator was British and it kept throwing me off. As someone else pointed out in her review, the British accent took away from the story. I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with British accents (I love them). This book just wasn’t meant for a British narrator and I don’t understand why they didn’t use an American narrator. The book itself was good and I am interested in continuing on in the series. Due to my health and also recovering from brain surgery and still having debilitating migraines and other issues that deal will brain fluid leakage, I’m not able to read as many books as I’d like. I have to listen to audio books. I’m not too keen on listening if it’s the same narrator. I’ll have to give it some thought. Anyway, I hope this review helps. As always, my fellow Goodreader’s, Happy Reading/Listening! 💜📚🎧
I’ve not read a book from this Author before, I really liked it. Just up my street. Crime, thriller. Bau crime thriller, these fbi agents are after a serial killer, The one female agent is also a medium and can speak to the dead, she still needs her knowledge to work out and catch the killer. 4 🌟 from me, I’ve even have bought the second book in the series. Rylie dark has written quite a lot of books, go out and try them.
Title is a bit obscure, no reference to Shakespeare content and the final conclusion is a bit out of the blue heavily dependent on her vision in the tank and Lyle turning up at the last moment just in time to save her from the serial killer who had not been involved in the story till she went to the book store. Otherwise entertaining enough and passed a couple of days on as they followed false leads and dead ends.

A new series featuring the FBI, serial killers and the paranormal. I’m hooked! Quick read and a pretty good story flow. My only complaint is my kindle version had some typos, the biggest one was using the deceased character’s name as the witness. I try hard not to have the typos direct my reviews but this one was so obvious that I felt it needed to be mentioned. I hope more of this series will be released soon.
This was fun. I enjoyed the premise of a psychic FBI agent, and took nerdy pleasure in the Shakespearean plot line. However it was a little jarring reading a book about the FBI that seemed to be written by a Brit. Weird little turns of phrase that don't really make sense from thoroughly American characters popped up constantly.
An original story that ties in Shakespeare. It is different having someone that is a psychic medium that is also an FBI Agent, however, they do try to keep the medium part a secret.
How did this book find me? It was a Hoopla Bonus Borrow for September 2024.
I’m not a fan of detective stories but I thought I’d try this one since the main character, special agent Carly See can speak to the dead. 👎🏼👎🏼, it was just boring for me.
page turner full of paranormal and psychic activity, shakespeare and a serial killer on the loose. the ending surprised me, especially because i was reading for clues, but i was fully invested in this story — even if there was too much going on at points.
Not a bad start for a series, but it did feel tentative and unsure as a whole. The setting was weird.... didn't seem to belong to DC, and the agents weren't super specific so they could have been agents of any organization.
Excellent listening book. This was a fun read especially if you are a Shakespeare fan. Good intro into this series. The author wove a good story to follow.
Well that was certainly different. These are the stories I try to avoid especially at night….. I’m also fond of Carly See! Even with her special abilities. I think she has an extraordinary mind. Why detective douche bag(Brown) tries to undermine her is beyond me. I’m looking forward to the rest of the creepy (in a good way) novels. Exceptional….. and on a side note, we need more female lead characters! I’m sick and tired of this so-called male dominant world. Woman can be smart capable Agents too!
Dnf First chapter didn't set up anything was like boom murder. Also they enter a house hear a thud and don't go in with guns ready and searching house for intruder.... Oh and she touches evidence without gloves on. Good cop skills.
"A book with twists and turns :)" ! Minor spoilers ! firstly, although this isn't a very well-known author and book, I enjoyed reading this and was captivated to find out who the killer was. The concept of the book was rather interesting, referencing many sonnets from Shakesphere (which I didn't understand since I have never read Shakesphere but ok 😅) which I believe must have been challenging to link. The sonnets were more literature-vibe but overall understood where the author was coming from and predicted what was about to happen next. I also really liked Carly's backstory of why she became an FBI agent and her special talent for communicating with the dead. It all linked up at the end and the read was worth it. As much as there is to praise about this book, I feel that there are also a few improvements that the book could have been better with. Starting off with the part when the killer was revealed and Carly was trying to fight him off, I felt that it was a little rushed and she was saved too quickly. It seemed that the author just wanted to end off as quickly as possible on the case and not actually elaborate to give more details and make it a "slow burn". The rest of the book in the earlier pages was also a little too draggy and controversial to the last part, had too much elaboration which made it slightly boring while reading. Also, the book was mostly following wrong leads and suspects except when Carly depended on her special ability one last time to catch the killer. This made the book itself boring in a way? Because I always expect the least expected and like a big twist at the end of crime novels instead of a stranger (lol). Lyle's point of view was also not as important but I can't really comment on that as this is a series and I have only read this first book in the series. To end off this review, this book could definitely be improved but the idea, concept, and flow of the story gave it a deserving 3 ⭐️!
I enjoyed this Shakespearean themed theatrical thriller. I’m tempted to read more from this author but that will have to wait until I clear out a little more of my TBR.
Thls novel is the first in a series about FBI Special Agent Carly See, working with the elite BAU unit. Carly hides a secret talent: she can speak with the dead.
The murder of her best friend at a young age and the disappearance of her sister, still unsolved, plunged her life into grief and awakened a new power within her. Sometimes messages come from direct contact, other times in dreams. All of it feels like a curse—until Carly realizes she can harness her new skills to solve cases. But her abilities are unreliable, and Carly must use her brilliant mind to complete the puzzle—all while struggling to keep her secret from her colleagues.
As Carly races to decode the conflicting messages she receives from the other side, she wonders: Why these poems? Why these victims? What connects them? What is the killer’s secret message?
And who will he strike next?
In a twisted game of cat and mouse, this killer seems to know way too much about Carly. Is he toying with her?
Or is Carly herself the prey?
A page-turning thriller packed with twists and turns, secrets, and harrowing surprises you won’t see coming, the CARLY SEE series is a mystery series that will endear you to a unique new character and having you turning pages, bleary-eyed, late into the night.
No Way Out is the first book outlining this FBI serial murderer and those who he’s taken their young lives earlier than expected. Carly works alongside Special Agent Lyle who’s the senior yet older partner in the team. It’s great to read that they have a great working relationship but not enough for Carly to share a certain psychic secret with Lyle. The story is well written which gives the readers an understanding and insight to how they are investigating any leads no matter if right or wrong. Lyle accepts Carly’s unique ability that gets the killer in the end, even though he doesn’t want to know about her abilities and might have an idea of how she obtains the insight to capture the killer as long as they get the killer in the end. I’ve rather enjoyed reading No way out and certainly will read the next instalments as I’m rather intrigued to learn if she does get the courage to tell her secrets to Lyle. Keep up the great writing.
I recommend any readers who read Blake Pierce, Molly Black, Kate Bold as they all write FBI suspense thrillers. I was given this free e-book, so in return I have written a review.
I Wanted to Like This Better I expected to like this story better than I did. It sounded like something I would normally enjoy. Honestly, it was okay. It just wasn't great. I'm wondering if the poor narration did it in for me.
I had a couple of issues with the narration. Mostly, I had issues with American FBI agents speaking with British accents. I've ranted about this before. If I'm listening to an audiobook about DI's in London, I expect them to speak with various Brit accents. But if they are US personnel, I expect them to sound like they've grown up somewhere in this country, unless that's part of the plot line. Surprisingly, it is part of the story of our main character, Carly. So, I have no problem with her having an accent. But it's a problem with ALL of the characters who sound like her.
Maybe I would have been able to pay more attention to the plot (which seemed well planned and executed) if I hadn't been so stuck on the voicings of the characters. I recommend reading the book instead of listening to the audiobook. I may try again with book 2 and see if I can develop a rapport with these characters before I give up.
Another first of a series of FBI suspense paranormal investigation novels. This was so well written…real characters..reacting in a way we would fully expect…tiredness…irritableness…just so normal.
A serial killer leaving Shakespearean sonnets with the victims…the first actually being killed during a production of ‘MacBeth’ is intriguing enough but throw into the mix the fact that FBI Special Agent Carly See can get hints from the recently deceased and suddenly we have an X-Files type investigator alongside her partner Lyle Ramsey who is aware there is something special about her and it opens up endless possibilities.
Short and linear…with all the killings taking place within 48hrs but with more than enough clues that make it a fascinating read. The only wrinkle and issue I had with it was with the killer reveal…shame but with enough dangling plot threads that would definitely make it worth your while returning to this unusual world.
A nice, short detective FBI thriller. The mystery was interesting, but not really the type you would be able to put together yourself until the main character has also realized it. Kind of annoying how much Shakespeare they explained for this being a book centered around Shakespeare and with characters who have grown up with learning about his works, I was hoping this would have been made for enthusiast level; instead of explaining to someone who's mom specialized in Shakespeare and made her learn his sonnets at 11 why Macbeth is cursed:/ I really liked the two main detective characters, Carly and Lyle, and it was such a breath of fresh air for them to both think of their partnership as a father-daughter bond instead of yet another forced romance angle. I was a little skeptical of Carly being psychic. but I think it was integrated into the book fairly well. Overall, it was a neat read, especially for being free, will probably continue the rest of the series.
Carly and her partner/mentor Lyle have just ended a case when they were thrown out into another one that had a most startling link among them - Shakespeare! This story is full of twists and turns sometimes initiated because of Carly's paranormal powers, as she can see/hear "leads" given by the dead. No Way Out has a good plot, although Carly's psychic personality is somewhat a largely used one in mystery stories as well as that of her mentor, Lyle, being the understanding and protective FBI older agent. It's an entertaining and well-written story that makes a promising start to a new series. As part of the author's ARC team, I downloaded a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.
