Michael Stagg has been a trial lawyer for more than twenty-five years. He has tried cases to juries and he's won and he's lost and he's argued about it in the court of appeals after. He still practices law so he's writing the Nate Shepherd series under a pen name.
Michael and his wife live in the Midwest. Their sons are grown so time that used to be spent at football games and band concerts now goes to writing. He enjoys sports of all sorts, reading, and grilling, with the order depending on the day.

Short, to the point prequel but gives a glimpse into a childhood rivalry with two main protagonists with a back up group of characters. Not overly developed which is good
The short story takes place as Nate Shepherd begins his law career in the prosecutor's office immediately following law school and about 10 years before the events in Lethal Defense, Book 1.
Signing up for the author's newsletter provided the opportunity to receive the short story. It's an excellent precursor to the history of Nate Shepherd and Mitch Pearson and the early days of Nate's relationship with Sarah, the woman that became his wife.
This book is less than a short story, just a few chapters, supposedly a prequel to the Nate Shepherd series, describing a few encounters between the lead character Nate, when he just started as a prosecutor, with some of the characters that will come up later in the series. It's very light, not worth the label 'short story' to me, both in length and substance, and not needed.
You can get the e-book for free on the author's web site.
This is a Nate Shepherd "quick hit" as it's just a short story. The draw here isn't completely the story, as there isn't a lot to talk about there. The draw is that this is when Nate is brand-spankin'-new, wet-behind-the-ears with the prosecutor's office. He crosses paths with a few characters we're familiar with, which is cool. Neat little filler if you're waiting for the next Nate book.
I wish there had been more about Sarah in this story since we really never get to know her in the other books. I hope, if he ever does another prequel short story, we get to know Hera little better.
