When Eddie Cayce returned home to New Orleans from her carefully built Seattle life, it’s not just for her grandmother’s funeral. She’s home to stay. More to the point, now that she’s broken it off with the almost fiancé and quit her corporate junior designer position over one too many trainings on how to run a copier, she has no reason to return.
With the money she’ll receive in her inheritance, she can finally open the antique store she’s always dreamed of – that as long as her ability to see ghosts stays dormant. In Seattle, her gift had dwindled down to seeing the occasional ghost during her morning runs in her Queen Anne neighborhood. But here? New Orleans is filled with the visitors, as her grandmother always called them. And now, they are finding Eddie and want to chat. Especially about the most recent murder.
Can Eddie carve out a real life here among the spirit world?

A Medium Fate is the debut book in Lynn Cahoon's newest series, The Haunted Life, centered around Eddie, a young woman who moves back to New Orleans after a break-up and job change, hoping to heal from her grandmother's death. One extra thing to note... she has a bit of magical powers, and now that her grandmother has passed, Eddie has also inherited the woman's money and gift of sight. Eddie opens an antiques business but finds herself a dead body on her first day in the store. Was it the homeless man protecting the store? A former/current employee with a grudge? Someone else out to get Eddie now too? Toss in some family drama over the inheritance and you've got a strong series start. I like Eddie's relationship with her brother, Nic, and there's a bodyguard who might end up being more to our heroine than a family employee. Excited about Lynn's second series this year, especially since I'm current on at least 5 of her others. Number due to release in the winter, and I'll be ready and eager for it.
When Eddie Cayce quit her job in Seattle and left her cheating boyfriend, she was heading to New Orleans for her beloved grandma's funeral. She was sad she hadn't made it home to see her grandma one last time before she passed, but knew her spirit would be around. What Eddie didn't want to do was get involved with her rich, overpowering family again - except for Nic, her brother.
When Eddie and Nic discovered the inheritance they would each receive, Aunt Frannie was livid. Eddie knew there was trouble within the family - now it was reaching out to her. As well as the monetary inheritance, Eddie had received her grandma's gift, something she really hadn't wanted. Her purchase of Goldstein's Antiques was a dream come true though, and as she set to working out the books, she knew she would love the business. But the body she discovered upstairs was one shock she didn't need. Who was the killer? Would the police discover the answer as Eddie was doing her inventory?
A Medium Fate is the 1st in The Haunted Life Cozy Mystery series by Lynn Cahoon and I quite enjoyed it. Bubba the bodyguard was an intriguing character, and Kirk the homeless guy was great! I was disappointed to find quite a number of editing errors which reduced my rating, but other than that I'd recommend this one to fans of paranormal cozies.
A Medium Fate is the first book in the Haunted Life Cozy Mystery Series by Lynn Cahoon.
I LOVED this first book in this new series. The story grabbed me from PAGE 1 and I couldn't put it down.
Eddie comes home to New Orleans to attend her grandmother's funeral. She decides to stay since there isn't anything left for her in Seattle. With her grandmother' inheritance money, she decides to purchase an antique store. She gets more than she bargains for when the previous owner is found dead in the back room.
I really love this character driven story. Eddie, her brother Nic are fantastic characters. I also really love Bubba, who I see as a potential love interest for Bubba.
A fantastic story with great characters , a fantastic plot and a great little mystery.
A Medium Fate Earns 5/5 Beignets…Fun and Entertaining!
Eddie Cayce is a talented interior designer, but she feels stifled in her job with a top Seattle firm. She’s also excited having found in her boyfriend’s drawer a ring she thought destined for her left hand, but she finds he’s having an affair,. The worst, yet, is the news her grandmother has passed away. So, she decides to resign from the job and say goodbye to the boyfriend, and head back home to New Orleans.
Eddie’s mother had claimed the renowned magician and clairvoyant Edgar Cayce as a distant relative, and although Eddie is not a magician, her visions are like magic. She can enter people’s thought and see what they are experiencing which can be good and disturbing. After her grandmother’s funeral she’s shocked to learn she receives the lion share of her grandmother’s vast fortune, but there’s much more. The symbol her brother paints on Eddie’s hand caused a rush of power to course through her, and at that moment, the power generations in the making is Eddie’s. She has several relatives upset they received little or nothing, and the power magnifies her magical abilities including communicating with ghosts. With her new wealth, she decides to buy a struggling antique business, and start making one of her dreams come true, however what will she do with the dead body in what would have been her office?
Magical Gem! Lynn Cahoon’s novella offers a fascinating paranormal twist with a “Big Easy” setting, diverse family and friends, a strong female protagonist, ghosts, and a cozy murder. The changes to Eddie’s life may be exciting, but she’s found herself in one difficult predicament after another: the victim’s family, the shop’s employees, an on-site ghost, a homeless guy, and her own disgruntled relatives. The book is shorter, but that means a more narrower focus, limited backstory, less extraneous dealings, and a quick reveal and arrest. No real cliffhanger incidents, but Eddie is just starting out, so there’re plenty of issues for the next book to address. Is she putting her trust in the right people? Will the resident ghost be helpful or obstructive? Can Aunt Franny’s threats really cause trouble? What is it that Bubba wants to talk about to Eddie? Definitely looking forward to book two! It New Orleans, too! So, enjoy a recipe for a tasty treat!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
I really enjoy Eddie and her determination to be her own person and do her own thing, even with an overbearing family and money! Love the antiques store premise and the little something extra Eddie has!
A first in series by one of my favourite authors. A designer in Seattle is called home when her Grandmother passes on. When she calls her boyfriend , ostensibly on a business trip she has a vision of him with another woman. So she breaks up with him and quits her job to just move back hame to New Orleans. Her desire is to start an antique store in the French Quarter but ones for sale are hard to find. The perfect store becomes available and she fallls in love with it. As the owner is deeply in the red he agrees to sell the store lock stock and all. The papers are signed but when the new owner comes in her first day she finds him dead in the employees break room, stabbed in the back. I’m looking forward to the next in series.
A Medium Fate is the first novella in Lynn Cahoon’s new The Haunted Life series. Eddie Cayce returns home to New Orleans after her Grandmother Andrews dies. She has left behind an unfulfilling job and a cheating boyfriend. Returning home has its own challenges. Not only can Eddie talk to ghosts, but she can also read peoples minds. Now her grandmother has bequeathed her not just money, but also the family powers. she now has knowledge from generations of ancestors. Eddie doesn’t want any of these powers. She wants to own an antique and design store. The day after she gets the keys to her new store, the previous owner is found dead, and inventory is missing. What was going on at Goldstein Antiques?
This novella was great fun to read. It’s a fast paced read that had me mesmerized from beginning to end. New Orleans is always a fabulous setting. Even if readers have never been to New Orleans, they will recognize the names of places mentioned in the story. Eddie is strong willed and independent. She thinks her brother, Nic, treats her like a child, but his “take care of business” attitude makes the story more interesting. There is more than meets the eye to her bodyguard, Bubba. And Trenton is wonderful in so many ways. Everyone should have a Trenton. There’s a possible love triangle being set up. I know who I’m rooting for. If you want humor, this book has it. I laughed out loud quite a few times. There are several great lines in this story, but my favorite is the message for Eddie in her grandmother’s will, “I hope you find that home can be a place of support and independence at the same time. Live your wildest dream, my dear.” The story was expertly plotted. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book to see what happens with Eddie’s jealous relatives. If you want humor, this book has it. I laughed out loud quite a few times.
I encourage everyone, mystery reader or not, to read this novella.
Many thanks to Lynn Cahoon for providing a digital advanced copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
Psychics, ghosts, and antiques. What more could I ask for? Throw in a murder and this has everything we need for the start of a new series that will be entertaining and keep readers guessing.
Eddie Cayce (and I love the name association) is tired of her job. She can't take one more bogus employee meeting. Receiving the news that her grandmother has died and her hoped-to-be future husband is NOT "the one" on the same day sends Eddie over the edge. She had left the family business and homestead, even her home state, to prove she could make her way in the world on her own. When that world comes crashing down around her, its alright to head home. Once there she is shocked to learn of her inheritance. Other family members are shocked by how she uses it.
A bit of romance, a lot of mystery, even more family turmoil and this book sets the scene for a great new series from an author who has proven herself multi-talented. I like the characters already and look forward to seeing where this series takes them.
A Medium Fate by Lynn Cahoon sees Eddie Cayse returning home for her grandmother's funeral and maybe staying. Will Eddie find out what happened to the recent murder victim? Eddie Cayse Eddie Cayse was living in Seattle, thinking she was living the good life. Until she realized that her boyfriend was cheating on her and decided to move back home. Well, that and the fact that her grandma just passed made that decision for her. Eddie is a lovely person who tries hard to keep her family out of her personal life, even though it is hard. What I like about Eddie is that she tries to live the life she wants to have while still having the life she actually does. The Mystery Eddie Cayse recently returns home and finds a dead body in her newly purchased antique shop. She doesn't have the typical motive of a sleuth to figure out who did it since she only wants to get back merchandise that was supposed to be in the store but isn't. The more she dives into the mystery; the more things seem strange at the antique shop. Eddie is trying her best, and I didn't figure it out before the culprit laid it out.
Five Stars I am giving A Medium Fate by Lynn Cahoon five stars and a recommendation to anyone who likes paranormal mysteries in New Orleans. Ms. Cahoon has done a superb job of laying out the beginning of what should be a fantastical series.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of A Medium Fate by Lynn Cahoon.
Eddie Casey has left her job as a designer and her cheating fiancé, returning to her home in New Orleans for her grandmother’s funeral. Some may think it’s temporary, but Eddie knows she is home to stay. With her grandmother’s inheritance she will finally be able to invest in her own antique store. Not only did she receive her inheritance; but also received family powers that have been passed on for generations; giving her the opportunity to see the past and helping her to understand the future as she goes forward. Not only can Eddie see ghosts; she can also read minds. (Hence the ex-fiancé.) This new power puts Eddie on the radar of several family members.
Hoping her departure from Seattle would leave the ghosts behind was wishful thinking. Although her realtor showed her several properties, Eddie had her mind set on a specific building. When her realtor discouraged her, Edde was persistent. They met with the owner, Matty Goldstein, and after convincing him to sell and take the trips he’s been wanting, Matty agreed to sell the property. On Eddie’s first day as the owner, she finds a dead body in the conference room. Matty’s dead body!
A great new series by Lynn Cahoon, one I enjoyed reading. I liked that Eddie is a strong female, she knows what she wants and goes for it. She and her brother, Nicolae, are quite a force as they work together to keep the family powers. Nicolae is protective of her, to the extent of hiring a bodyguard, Bubba. Bubba is an interesting character; one I am looking forward to reading more of. Harry, the resident ghost, is a wealth of knowledge and makes a perfect sidekick. Overall, it ticked off all my cozy requirements. Great start to a new series! I’m looking forward to reading the next book!
"A Medium Fate" is book #1 of the "Haunted Life Mystery Series" by Lynn Cahoon.
After the loss of her beloved grandmother and a nasty break-up with her almost fiancé, Eddie quits her job and moves from Seattle back to her hometown of New Orleans to heal and make a fresh start. The inheritance from her grandmother is far more than she expected, not to mention complicated. Eddie decides to buy an antique shop and relaunch her design career. She finds the perfect place to purchase, but when she finds the body of the owner the day after he sold it to her, things quickly take a turn. Squabbling relatives, hangers-on - both living and dead - haunting her can make solving the murder a bit tricky.
My thoughts: Reading anything with para-normal is not my preferred genre but I do like Lynn Cahoon's writing so decided to give this a try. If I were going strictly by the first chapter or so, I really wasn't impressed. The job and relationship situations in Seattle were a mess to say the least. Even the first part of Eddie's arrival in New Orleans didn't impress me. Her brother Nic seemed over protective and the rest of the lot just made me cringe.
I was intrigues by the mention of Nic's connection to Esmerelda in South Cove California - who of course is a character in Ms Cahoon's Tourist Trap Series. (Nic has also visited in a couple of them).
Eddie hearing and seeing dead people/ghosts/spirits isn't something I normally buy into but once the murder happened I was able to mostly look past the spirits or see them as a side plot and sometimes humourous incident.
Not sure if I will keep reading the series or not but this first book was better than I thought it would be. JMO
When Eddie gets fed up with having to sit through one too many training sessions on how to use a copy machine, she quits her lucrative job at a prestigious design firm in Seattle. Her exit coincides with her grandmother’s death in New Orleans, sending Eddie home to stay. Not only does she inherit a sizable chunk of money from her grandmother, but she also inherits her grandmother’s “gifts”. With the money, Eddie buys herself an antique store, which has long been a dream of hers. When the previous owner is found dead in his office the following day, Eddie finds herself in the midst of a murder investigation. She’s also determined to hunt down several valuable antiques that were meant to be included in the inventory but are unaccounted for. Aiding her in this quest is her brother, Nic, her bodyguard, Bubba, and Harry, the original owner of the store who died decades earlier.
I enjoyed the story, although Eddie was far more involved in trying to find the missing antiques than in attempting to solve the murder. In a way, that was refreshing. It was interesting to meet her family and watch as they turned into a pack of jackals when they realized that Nic and Eddie had inherited the bulk of their grandmother’s estate. Characters were portrayed well, and the narrative clipped along at a good pace and made sense as it went. The only drawback, in my opinion, is that the ending seemed rather rushed.
Eddie Casey is returning to her home town of New Orleans for her grandmother's funeral. She has also broken up with her boyfriend when she discovered he was cheating on her. As a result, she is totally ready for a change. After the reading of the will, Eddie finds that with the money left to her by her grandmother, she will be able to buy the Antique Store she has always dreamed about. After contacting a realtor, she is shown Goldstein Antiques. Eddie makes an offer to buy the store and Matty Goldstein accepts it. The day after paying Matty, Eddie finds him dead in the conference room of the Antiques Store. To compound matters, as Eddie does an inventory based on Matty's lists, some of the antiques are missing!!
Who killed Matty? Why was he killed? Where are the missing antiques? Have they been stolen or sold and not reported? Can Eddie find the missing merchandise? Can she unravel the mystery of Matty's death?
Lynn Cahoon has a great start to this new series. Realistic characters with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged from start to finish. Definitely looking forward to more stories in this wonderful series!!
Eddie Cayse is back home in New Orleans after giving her cheating boyfriend the boot in Seattle. Another reason is to attend the funeral of her grandmother. After the Will is read Eddie is flush with funds and, shortly afterwards, inherits granny’s magical talents as well as her memories stretching back over the centuries. Not everyone is happy with either bequest, in particular her Aunt who felt entitled to everything Eddie got. Eddie, however, is more interested in opening her own antiques store. She acquires an existing business but, shortly afterwards, the previous owner is found dead on the premises. And the business accounts don’t make any sense. There are ghosts aplenty and Eddie also has the ability to read minds and communicate, mainly with her family, telepathically. There’s a lot going on, too much. It’s quite nicely done but would have benefitted from a tighter edit (sometimes the language is strangulated). The two 'mysteries' are solved with the minimum of effort and, for the life of me, I could not figure out what part either played except as scenery. 3 Stars
Eddie Casey is from an old family in New Orleans and when her grandmother dies Eddie packs up and heads home to New Orleans. Her family is not only one of the old families in the area but they have magic. Eddie becomes heir to her grandmother’s magic and it makes for an interesting counterpoint to Eddie’s desire to own an antique shop. The story is fairly short and seems to have been previously published in an anthology but is now being released on its own as the first book in a new series. I enjoyed reading A Medium’s Fate. I was drawn to Eddie from the beginning and interested in how things would play out. The mystery of who killed the previous owner of the antique shop felt a bit like an after thought to the main storyline about Eddie, her brother Nic, the ghosts and the family history. I look forward to reading more about this new heroine as the Haunted Life mystery series gets going. Thanks to the author for an early copy for review.
A Medium Fate is the first book in the Haunted Life Cozy Mystery Series by Lynn Cahoon. A Seattle Junior Designer, Eddie Casey, leaves Seattle and her cheating fiancé behind when she returns to New Orleans, LA. She attends the funeral of her grandmother. She and her brother inherit the majority of her estate, which her mother is not pleased with. She would like to open an antiques store. She purchases one and then discovers items missing, a dead body – the previous owner, and employees who do not exist. What is going on and who killed the previous owner and why?
I loved this first in a series. I found it refreshing. They characters are unique and have depth. I like Bubba, Bubba’s mother, Nick, and Kirk. The detective isn’t a squeamish. I look forward to the next installment.
I was given an advanced copy and am not required to leave a positive review.
Lynn Cahoon has written an interesting page-turner of a book following witch Eddie Cayce's return home, the growth of her powers and the resulting family drama, and her purchase of large antique store that is missing some of its inventory and, coincidentally ends up with the body of the former owner in it the day she takes possession. However, to term this a cozy mystery is a bit of a misnomer. The tracking down of the missing inventory is as simple as visiting the former owner's, and another's, home, and the murder is solved...SPOILER ALERT...by means of a confession and no sleuthing on the main characters' part. Be that as it may, the characters are fun and relatable and the book is well-written. Hopefully they get a chance to truly solve a mystery in the next book, now that the background story is well established.
Eddie Casey returns home to New Orleans for her grandmother's funeral and decides to stay since there's nothing left for her in Seatle. She wants to open an antique store, but she has ghosts who want to talk.
I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest, unbiased review. This was the first book in a new series which promises to be excellent. Lynn Cahoon is a favorite author with some wonderful books, and this one is no exception. This quick, fun read is well-written, and it drew me in from the beginning keeping me hooked throughout. It's a magical read with some magnificent characters. The mystery will keep you on your toes. I'm really looking forward to more from this series and highly recommend this book.
Lynn Cahoon has the start of another great series! This was a fun easy read that I cannot wait to see how the series continues.
Eddie Cayce goes back home to New Orleans for her grandmother's funeral. She realizes that Seattle isn't where she wants to be anymore and decides to stay. While Eddie tries to figure out what job she wants, her brother Nic wants her to join the family business. Eddie wants to buy an antique shop with her inheritance despite the disapproval of some family members. Things see to be going well for Eddie until the former shop owner is found dead. As Eddie try to go through the inventory in the antique shop, she enlists the help of Nic and her body guard, Bubba. These characters are very realistic and I am excited to see how they continue to interact in the next book.
A Medium Fate is the first book in a new paranormal cozy mystery series ( A Haunted Life) by Lynn Cahoon. I can already tell I'm gonna like the characters, the setting (New Orleans), and the mysteries - although the mystery in this book takes a bit of a backseat as we focus more on learning about the main character, Eddie Cayce, her brother, Nick (Easter egg nod to another Cahoon series which thrilled me), and their family and inherited abilities. A quick but very enjoyable reading experience. I'm already looking forward to the next book.
Many thanks to Bookfunnel and the author for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are honest and without bias or favor or expectations.
A great new paranormal cozy mystery by Lynn Cahoon
A Medium Fate is an enjoyable new paranormal cozy mystery novella! The characters are likable and interesting, the mystery is good and it is a quick read. Eddie finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her and she doesn't like her job. Her grandmother dies so Eddie goes home to New Orleans for the funeral and to figure out her next step. She decides to buy an Antiques Store. Her brother Nic is very supportive but is also concerned for her safety. He hires a bodyguard for Eddie after there is a murder at the store. Eddie receives the paranormal gifts from her grandmother. She can see into the future sometimes and she and Nic can read each others minds. An enjoyable start to new series. #AMediumFate
A Medium Fate, the first book in Lynn Cahoon's new The Hunted Life cozy mystery series is awesome! I may have a new favorite among her many series that I love! The strength of the main character, Eddie Cayce, as well as her kind heart draw me in. I love the other central characters as well and was excited to realize that I had "met" her brother before. The murder mystery was secondary to the characters, and I was more than fine with that. Eddie isn't thrilled with her powers even before she inherits all of her grandmother's too. Nor is she excited by the walls created by her family's wealth, but she has a decent attitude towards all of it instead of whining as we see so often.
A Medium Fate is book #1 in The Haunted Life Cozy Mystery Series by Lynn Cahoon.
Eddie Cayce leaves her job and boyfriend in Seattle to return home to New Orleans. Her inheritance is more than just money. Can she build a new life?
This is a wonderful start to a new series! I love the New Orleans setting and Eddie’s new business. There is family conflict and a potential love interest. It was an interesting murder mystery. I liked Eddie’s treatment of Kirk. Can’t wait for the next book!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
When Eddie Cayce’s grandmother dies, she quits her job and leaves her cheating fiancé and moves back to New Orleans. Against her brother Nic’s wishes for her to join the family business, Eddie purchases an antique store. Her excitement about her new venture is soon dashed when she discovers the body of the previous owner dead in the store and finds that there are priceless antiques missing from the store. There is also the matter of the “gift“ that her grandmother has left to her. Will she ever be able to sort all this out? Lynn Cahoon has done a wonderful job of introducing us to the main characters in this book and I am looking forward to reading more about them in future books.
I love this author's other series and knew I'd be in for a treat with this book that definitely didn't disappoint. I love Eddie's relationship with her brother and hopefully budding relationship with bodyguard Bubba. It cracked me up when his mom started talking about him to Eddie telling her about his real name and childhood. I enjoy any book set in NOLA since I'd love to visit there someday but probably won't, lol.
Harry the store ghost was a great character. Everyone needs a store ghost 'cause you never know how handy they'll be solving a murder! I hadn't guessed the perp until the end, and I absolutely can't wait till the next book comes out!
This was a great quick read. Eddie seems like a really down to earth woman with a fresh start. I normally don't read paranormalish mystery books, but after reading Lynn Cahoons Kitchen Witch series (which I really enjoy) this one seems like just going to be a great series. The brother sister relationship is a really good one. There "special gifts" are really cool too. (NO spoilers). It will be neat to read how the shop progresses into what Eddie dreams it to me. Even the hint of a possible romance, and possible family drama can always add an extra twist. Can't wait to read what unfolds next.
A fun introduction to a mystery series set in New Orleans with times to the author’s Tourist Trap series. When Eddie Casey returns home after the death of her grandmother she uses her inheritance to buy an antique store. Sounds like a perfect plan until the previous owner is found dead in the back room the next day. With disgruntled relatives climbing out of the woodwork, ghosts popping in and out and her brother trying to convince her that her time would be better spent working for the family company Eddie plows ahead determined to make her own way in life.
Great new book in a new series,m The Haunted Life Mysteries. This fast reading story has the main characrter Eddie Casey back home in New Orleans to live after her grandma dies. Eddie has a protective brother, ghosts that Eddie can talk to and, of course, a murder. We meet interesting charaters such as Bubba, the secruity guard, a homeless guy at the antique store and Detective Charles, who is trying to solve the murder. More stories will be released and I am looking forward to reading them.
This was a short but entertaining cozy mystery. It felt like just an introduction to the series, like it was setting everything up for future installments. The mystery didn't get started until about the halfway point, and since this was such a short read, it felt a little rushed. I did enjoy getting to know Eddie and her brother, and the unique family gift. And I always love a New Orleans setting. I definitely plan on checking out the next book. If you're in the mood for a quick and light paranormal cozy, I think you'll enjoy this one!
Amazing read! Eddie Cayce returns home to New Orleans when her grandmother passes away and decides to stay because her life in Seattle wasn’t going the way she has hoped it would but at least she found that out before she made a major commitment to her now ex-boyfriend and she is much better off. She decides to buy an antique store in the French Quarter and I can’t wait to see what happens next. She has the incredible ability to see and hear and talk to spirits which is sure to make things interesting. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
