Kyle Coare takes readers deep into the depths of hell — through lava-filled pits where demons dwell — and into the corners of our own nightmares, where ghosts, ghouls, spectres, and phantoms wait in the darkest lairs. These poems summon the sounds that go bump in the night, the beings that lurk when you turn out the light, and the fears that creep beneath the surface of the everyday.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Kyle this week and watching him perform. He is such a talent — his words flow with a natural rhythm, painting vivid pictures and stirring real feeling. In this collection, they not only enchant but also bite and fright. He has an incredible gift for gothic and darker styles of poetry, and In Shadows is proof of just how good he is at it.

Standout pieces for me included the hauntingly beautiful Scared, the eerie Fog Shrouded Sheets, and the potent, unforgettable Where Poppies Grow. Each poem lingers long after you’ve read it — like smoke curling in the dark.

Kyle Coare has crafted a collection that doesn’t just explore shadows — it embodies them. For lovers of gothic, horror, and poetry that isn’t afraid to dig into the dark, In Shadows is a must-read.

I loved it so much! He covers some pretty heavy subjects too, which I liked. Some poems made me laugh, others creeped me out. And that's exactly what I needed from this collection. Coare has quickly become my favorite (modern-day) poet.
