Trouble Comes in Threes #1

When the Storm Comes

Rate this book
Donovan’s day just keeps getting worse.

It might not have been the zombie apocalypse, but a tsunami and hurricane hitting the East Coast at the same time was definitely the start to a bad B-movie. Alone and doing his best to run from the impending wall of water that was only hours away, Donovan thought his day couldn’t get any worse. It could. Now he had a tsunami, a hurricane, and Trey…bad things definitely came in threes.

Trey’s day was finally looking up.

Stranded at home with his baby sister as chaos ensues was not how he was expecting to spend his morning, but then comes Donovan to the rescue. When his cute frenemy pulls up outside his house to rescue them from the impending storm, all Trey can think about is one thing… Donovan.

When an uptight cutie is trapped with a flirt who loves to make his new BFF blush, the storm brewing between them becomes the most powerful of all.

Author’s note: When the Storm Comes is a lighthearted take on an impending disaster. I promise that Donovan’s biggest fear is going to be guessing what’s in Trey’s clearly naughty duffel bag and how to deal with the smiling bomb in the back seat (aka a baby). The first book is a slow burn with lots of teasing and a bit of BDSM, but it will heat up in book two, When the Clouds Part.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what I really expected from this. Maybe higher stakes and more disaster than what we got?

While I liked the concept and did laugh a good bit at how ridiculous this was, I didn’t really buy into the chemistry between Trey and Donovan & have no idea why a BDSM style relationship got thrown into the mix.

I'm a bit conflicted about how to rate this book. So resorting to bullet points.

Good:
- Disaster setting! Improbable, yes. Entertaining, also yes.
- MC's personalities. Shy, reserved and inexperienced Donovan who is 100% prepared for the disaster, and experienced, goofy Trey are both endearing with a nice opposites - attract dynamic
- Slower burn. I say slower, because while it takes them a while in the book, it is only really a handful of days before their relationship kicks off.
- Really excellent communication. I loved the way Trey made Donovan really spell out what he was feeling and what he wanted, especially since Donovan has a lot less experience sexually and BDSM wise.

Unsure / Less Good:
- Not enough disaster setting! The disaster ended up being not much more than an elaborate excuse for an "only one cabin" forced proximity. I do love that trope, but could have used a smidge more danger.
- Babby. Why is there a baby even involved? So far, she seems to exist on the periphery just to highlight the "responsibility" attributes of the MC's and to give them something to do (other than each other). She's mostly ignorable but I prefer my disaster books to be babby-free, in general.
- Too many words. There are about 30% too many words. This is something I've run into from M.A. Innes before. It doesn't make the book bad, but I end up losing focus and skimming.

Overall it was a solid enjoyable read, and I'd recommend to others. For me the good parts outweighed the negatives. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

June 2022 - DNF'd

The blurb makes the book sound exciting:
🌊 a tsunami and hurricane hitting the East Coast at the same time
🌊 Alone and doing his best to run from the impending wall of water that was only hours away
🌊 Now he had a tsunami, a hurricane, and Trey…bad things definitely came in threes.

This Is Going To Be So Exciting Brad Mondo GIF - This Is Going To Be So Exciting Brad Mondo This Is Going To Be Fun GIFs

What Actually Happens:
The impending disaster is just an excuse for two immature college-age guys to hang out in a cabin. They drive there, pick up supplies, cook, eat, clean, and think about getting more food. They care for the baby, talk, joke around, and plan to reorganize the cabin. As for the romance, there's a bit of flirting and some kissing.

Stuffed Garfield GIF - Stuffed Garfield Bored GIFs

A major annoyance was the complete lack of character descriptions. There's a guy on the book cover, but who knows which MC that is. 🤷‍♀️

At the halfway point, I had no desire to keep going. I wasn't looking for a book about two guys playing house with hardly any chemistry between them. Words like "dude" and "dork," along with lots of "snorting," made them feel juvenile. I'm past the age where I can relate to their silliness.

Done GIF - Done GIFs

2-stars because it wasn't a terrible book, just not for me. Some may like the playful banter between the MCs. And the occasional appearance of the baby. Just know that nothing exciting happens.

😂 My Two Favorite Quotes in the First Half:
We are on the run from several natural disasters and the insane humans who will soon start panicking. All we need is randomly assigned dysentery and we will be in Oregon Trail.

“He could be raising you to be a Star Wars fan. That would be terrible. Have you seen what Disney’s done with the franchise?”

🚫 Due to the lack of descriptions, the mediocre writing and the dull plot, I'm done with this author.

Re-read 6/6/23 -- still love these two finding their way together in a state of emergency. So good together!

Dear lord, I love this author! I love how she writes, the ideas her boys put in her head, and all the sweetness they show each other while at the same time being so damn sexy! I love how prim Donovan is and yet how much Trey makes him fall apart. I love how caring and competent Trey is with his sister (who he's actually raising, thanks to their incredibly unthinking mother) yet how much he needed Donovan to help get them both to somewhere safe, and how much Trey can show his worth once they get there together. So good! I think it might be that I have just a bit of competence-kink...

I came for the natural disaster and stayed for it too. I mean their relationship beginnings are cute and all, but the setting is what really held my attention.

This book has shown me, how truly unprepared I am for a catastrophe. I knew it, but it really reminded me again, so thanks for that. I need to buy some canned food and water.

Aaaanyways I had some issues with this book, that's why it's 4 ⭐.

We don't get any character descriptions, like none at all. For all I knew, the author could have imagined them looking like Fred Flinestone and Barney Rubble. I always hate that.

Trey was too teasy?! It was sometimes a bit grating and Donovan was the complete opposite. They both should take a bite out of each other's books.

Dork dork DORK
fucking shut uuuuup.
Dork is NOT a pet name. I think I read that word a 100 times. It's not the 60s, they didn't have a milkshake date, Trey wasn't wearing his leather jacket with the handy comb pocket. Are we on the movie set of Grease? Ugh it was so annoying.
Though the worst part about it? Donovan is clearly autistic and calling him a dork constantly and saying/thinking he is weird, is a HUGE NO GO! I wanted to scream and honestly I should remove more stars because of it. But I'm a sucker for pining and Trey was clearing crushing on Donovan for years, so I rather concentrated on this fact.

I'm not a BDSM fan, I don't look for it but I'm okay with it when it's included. So I didn't mind it, when I read about it in the blurb. But wow a time and a place. It's all fine that the author wanted to write some kink, no problem but jumping head first into bdsm is crazy. Donovan was/is a virgin, why the fuck can't he just experience sex "normally" and then work his way up. Trey is a Dom for years, um what? It sounds like they are about 20? Maybe that's just me but with 18/19 I barely knew what bdsm even was.
So the sex scenes weren't my thing, except this one scene. It was a nice sex scene, it held my attention and then all of a sudden "flicked my tongue over his piss slit"
COME OOON. I recoiled and I'm glad I didn't read it in public, I'm sure I couldn't have controled my facial expression. That sounds awful!

Overall though I liked it and I already downloaded the second book!

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. The sleeping bomb is funny but It's funnier that Donovan would've handle and lizard person better!  Food…check, important papers..check, food..check,  one annoying neighbor…check with a slepping time bomb what could go wrong at the end of the world feel.  Donovan's parents may have prepared for this but being stuck with Trey and baby Sam was part of these plans. Trey is a whole thing, that is about to be Donovan very undoing, because really how can you stay mad at someone that balled up is this energized cuteness.

M.A. Innes new book grabbed me from the first chapter and I was unable to put it down. Donovan and Trey have know each other since third grade. Trey has always been fascinated and attracted to Donovan, but he was clueless to Trey's feelings. Then comes a simultaneous hurricane and tsunami that threatens to destroy most of the East Coast. While Donovan's parents are stuck in Europe, Trey and Donovan escape with Trey's baby sister Sam to Donovan's family cabin for safety.

I loved Donovan at the beginning. He was so serious, considerate, and trying to do the right thing while being scared to death. I love how analytical he was about everything and how he kept making lists in his head. Once he convinced Trey to join him to be safe, he then added them into his considerations. It was very sweet and thoughtful.

Trey grew on me. He annoyed me a little in the beginning on how much he enjoyed pushing Donovan's buttons. Donovan was being so helpful and kind and Trey was just constantly putting him on edge just because he enjoyed it. But then, Trey showed more of who he really was and I grew to love him and how much he cared for Donovan.

I love the whole preparing for an apocalypse. It was fascinating to watch them both go into planning mode to prepare for what would be happening. The relationship that developed between the two during all of this was actually very sweet and hot.

I was getting very nervous as I neared the end because I had so many questions and there seemed to be so many loose ends (for instance: Trey's mom, Donovan's parents, how long would they be there, seeing how Trey being a switch would affect their relationship etc). So when I saw there was going to be a Book 2, I was relieved. I cannot wait to see how these two grow together as they actually complement each other very well.

**I received an ARC for my honest opinion**

What happens when there is an impending doom coming and a cute geeky boy ends up stranded with his enemy?

This story was so enjoyable, I loved reading about Donovan and his ever quirky family who seems to have invented " disaster prepping ". With a natural disaster on it's way Donovan had to flee to high lands, but luckily his family has a cabin in the mountains, he just has to get there, how hard could it be ?

Donovan is an over thinker so he has his list and plan before he sets off, but when every man and his dog is also evacuating plans become fluid. The worst case scenario is for Donovan to find Trey holding his baby sister and in a state of shock. Can Donovan stop to help the pair, but how can he function within Trey's vicinity ? Shock, horror...

" Hurricanes and tsunamis I could handle but living with Trey Simons might be the death of me "

Once Trey and his baby sister get rescued by Donovan the story flips to Trey becoming the dominant and resourceful character who flirts endlessly while taking care of both Sam and Donovan. He enjoys watching Donovan blush and stutter under his " tutillage" while he unselfishly shares his knowledge of all things " naughty "....

The whole trying to survive a disaster with a baby, looking for power, food, energy, communications and learning to listen to your stupid heart was a total joy to read. I can't wait for the next book
to see how else Trey will torment sweet Donovan.

Little slower and it'd have been perfect

I liked the bantering and teasing between Donovan and Trey. Loved their chemistry and just how they were together. I'd have liked more deep eive in their emotions and talking the bdsm aspect worked well and was well written but to me it seemed the mcs relationship kind of jumped over some phases. I mean first sexual experience for our virgin Donovan was spanking and coming on his newly established Dom's lap just felt...far fetched? it'd probably have been different if the sd-relationship had originated from his needs but whole aspect was new though to him even though it did fit him. I kinda would have liked more of that introduction to their intimate relationship - i felt like Trey should have given more of a romance introduction to Donovan especially when at no point did they have conversation about being boyfriends. They went straight to s/d part which for Donovan wasn't something he had eeally thought for himself.
This bothered me enough to drop one star of but otherwise I had no problems.
It was nice fast read with very likable characters

Okay, so I have mixed feelings about this book. The characters make me giggle, so that’s good. On the flip side, I get very annoyed by Trey. This book has BDSM elements in it that feel wrong to me. I do appreciate how explicitly Trey insists on honesty with how Donovan, the submissive, feels during a scene, but he’s kind of all over the place with his rules. There’s a part that Donovan is laying with Trey and thinks, “But since I wasn’t sure if this was boyfriend time or sub time…I decided that would be a bad idea.” This should never be a thing. A submissive should always have clear boundaries to exist within and know whether they were in or out of their roles. It’s unfair to Donovan for him to wonder about this. It can leave a submissive feeling off kilter and unsure. A Dom’s job is to make them feel secure and safe. On top of this, Trey is always calling Donovan a dork. Even after Donovan expresses dislike for the nickname, regardless of if it is said with affection or not. Trey laughs at Donovan’s discomfort many times, but then when Donovan laughs at something Trey does, Trey brings out the Dom and talks punishment. It feels demeaning and like Trey doesn't respect Donovan.

Facing both tsunami and hurricane icn North Carolina Donovan had the advantage of parents who were semi-preppers so he mentally made a list of what he needed and packed his car and prepared to leave until he saw his frenemy from high school, Trey, with his infant sister standing on the driveway looking a bit lost. He has to stop and help him and now they are on the way to the cabin in woods and stopping to buy at Walmart what they c an and Donovan is trying not to panic and thinking that Trey is weird and nervous around baby, Sam. Trey loves teasing Donovan and making him blush and you know that there is mutual attraction there. Being at the cabin and keeping track of the hurricane and getting periodic e-mails from his mom from Europe and her and his dad trying to get home and knowing their homes are lost and the hospital where his parents worked is also lost keeps Donovan on edge and Trey figures out way to help him let go. I loved their evolving relationship and watching Donovan submit to Trey is wonderful and sexy. Looking forward to the next book.

Trey and Donovan are running from a hurricane and tsunami set to hit their homes. Donovan's family has a cabin in the mountains, so they head towards the cabin. On the way, Trey reveals that he finds Donovan attractive and wants to get to know him better. Donovan is shy but also agrees that he wants to know Trey better.

Donovan is so innocent that it is adorable, while Trey has a dirty mind and loves to drive Donovan crazy. The two are neighbors and go to school together, but Donovan never thought that Trey could like him and want to date him. Trey tried flirting in high school, but Donovan never seemed to pick up on the flirting. The chemistry between the two was simmering from the beginning, and their relationship started quickly. The book doesn't focus on the diaster aspect but more on the start of the relationship between Trey and Donovan.

I'm looking forward to the next book to see how their relationship continues to develop and what is going on in the world around them.

When the Storm Comes is the first book in Trouble Comes in Threes series by author M.A. Innes. This story is told in dual POV and fits really well with this storyline. I feel this story is more of a part one vibe to it. I am very interested in knowing what is in that duffle bag too.

Donovan, he is in his parents' house when a hurricane comes through. He has to go to the mountain cabin his parents own for safety. I loved his making lists and making sure he has enough supplies for an apocalypse. He is a funny guy with a good heart.

Trey, he is not so organized. He is at the end of his driveway with his baby sister not sure what to do when Donovan finds him.

I love his dedication to his sister, and his unorganized but willing to take orders attitude. He is the light in this story.

Overall great for the first part of this journey. I cannot wait to see what is happening next.

This could have been a terrifying story. The entire east coast was being destroyed by a tsunami and a hurricane, and Donovan and Trey, along with Trey's baby sister, had to escape inland to Donovan's family cabin. Fortunately, this author knows how to keep things from getting too dark. While the young men were always aware of the tragedy nearby, they were more immediately focused on their attraction for each other. They also took wonderful care of baby Sam, who was absolutely precious. Scenes with her were sweet and light.
I loved adorably awkward Donovan and playful but intense Trey. They were so cute and sexy together. Their BDSM scenes were exploratory and hot, and I'm excited to see how they intensify as the bond between Trey and Donovan grows stronger.
This is a great story with fun, likable characters. I can't wait for more!

I was not prepared for how much I love this book (and therefore how hard it is to wait for book two!) Typically I wouldn’t make the argument that post-apocalyptic reading is my jam but this one really resonates. Despite what could be a fairly angsty read given the topic, in true MA Innes fashion this book manages to be syrupy sweet. It reads like a typical MA Innes or Shaw Montgomery novel with expected characters (someone has “weird” and “insane” parents every time) with an atypical storyline that’s just different enough to really draw me in. The character setup is great, I really like both Trey and Donovan. I’m excited to learn more about their D/S relationship but I also have so many storyline questions - can’t wait to see how book two unfolds. It is a HFN, so at least I have that. I received an ARC of this book, which really only means I have longer to wait for book two.

Finding love in a storm

I've been wracking my brain to find one word that best describes how this book made me feel but all I can come up with is "Awwww!" Awww as in so sweet. Awww as in so sexy. This book just makes me feel good. It's a beautiful friends-to-lovers story set against the backdrop of a natural disaster. As Trey and Donovan navigate their new reality they also discover a new relationship - Dom and sub. The tsunami and its aftermath are written surprisingly realistically and all the little ways that the two boys have to adjust and figure out. I loved the characters of Trey and Donovan. Their banter and little idiosyncrasies felt very authentic and I giggled at the way they pushed each others buttons! I'm diving into the next book and I'm eager to see where the story takes them next. Definitely recommend! 10/10

Brilliant, sweet, funny

Not what I was expecting but a fantastic surprise.
When Donovan needed to evacuate he loaded his car up to go to the family cabin in the mountains. But as he was leaving he saw Trey and his baby Sister looking lost , so he invited them as they had no other way of getting out safely.
Trey has had his eyes on Donovan for a long time but never approached him. Donovan has liked Trey from afar but thought Trey was straight.
Trey and Donovan are soon funny together, Trey being a Dom and loving to tease his dork Donovan. Donovan not realising he was submissive , but loving everything Trey done to him.
Absolutely loved this book, Looking forward to book two.

Cute

Donovan and Trey are fun together. It might have been awhile since they were close, but they are there for each other now. Facing danger alone is horrible so luckily these two and baby Sam have each other.

I think Trey is great for Donovan. He brings out aspects of Donovan that have been hidden or unacknowledged. Donovan lets Trey's dominate side come out and drive him crazy. these two need each other and know when to push buttons and when to cave.

I enjoyed reading this and can't wait for the next book so we see how things progress. Once the parents get involved things will get even more interesting on the Sam front and our guys aren't going to let anything happen to her.

Donovan is fleeing the incoming hurricane and tsunami resulting from volcanic explosions. His neighbour Trey and his baby sister Sam are stranded and desperately need help. Donovan comes to his rescue.

Together they begin riding out the disaster together in Donovan's family's remote cabin.

There was a great mix of teasing and fun tempered with the stress and uncertainty of the storms aftermath. I could often feel Donovan's embarrassment and how uncomfortable he was talking about specific topics.

Together this couple are super sweet, fun and caring. I really enjoyed watching them grow closer and discovering themselves and each other in less than ideal but could be a lot worse circumstances.

When the Storm comes is the first book in the Trouble Comes in Threes by M.A. Innes. It's the story of Donovan and Trey. With an impending tsunami and hurricane coming to the East Coast Donovan packs up his car to leave for his families cabin in the mountains. Trey is stranded at home with his baby sister. He has no way to take them to safety. Thankfully Donovan, his cute frenemy, stops and offers him a ride and a place.

I loved their story. It was sweet, cute, sexy, fun, full of feels and very well written. Can't wait for the next book in their story!

It’s given that I like all books of M.A. Innes. With this new series the same. What a great starting

The story is about Donavan and Frey which habe to flee caused by a great weather catastrophe. Both know each other from neighbor hood and school. In the package is also a baby included.

The author has the gift to put all the emotions In words so you can follow everything. I like the light BDSM part in the book and I’m really looking forward to the next part of their story.

I had the luck to get an ARC to read.

I received an ARC of this book. I took it with a dash of doubt, because I hate catastrophes, more now with the world as it is, but in the end enjoyed it greatly.
Take two college students, a baby and a prepper family, throw in a huracan and you have this story. Donovan is one of my favorite character ever, because I find miself cuestioning my sanity and the sanity of my family quite often. Trey gives him the oportunity of opening himself to new experiences, but it takes a brave heart to do it.
I liked the realness I felt reading the story and can´t wait for the next

This new trilogy by M A Innes starts with two men and a baby outrunning a hurricane and a tsunami. Donovan's family are end of the world/zombie apocalypse preppers and have a cabin out in the mountains beyond Raleigh. While leaving his neighborhood, he finds Trey and his sister, carless and in trouble. He offers help. And the adventure begins.
The budding relationship in this HFN cliffhanger is sweet. The story is a bit slow moving. But there's a lot of backstory to cover what with getting ready for the storm. Hopefully in the next two books, the pace and tone won't be so meandering.

I really enjoy disaster books/movies and if you add to the mix a sweet m/m romance I'm hooked!
I really liked the pacing of the book. The first part was more focused on getting away from the tsunami and survival and the second part on the romance. Donovan and Trey were adorable together. The banter between them was so much fun and I have a soft spot for shy and dorky characters like Donovan. Trey was his perfect match. Also, I loved baby Sam, she was a great addition to the story. And I'm curious to hear her first word lol.
Great story, I'm looking forward to the next book.

Great new story! Can't wait to read the next ones

Per usual M.A. Innes totally delivers with this first book in the new series, I seriously am going to to go a bit nuts waiting for the next book. I absolutely adore Trey and Donovan they are so sweet together and Trey is an amazing pseudo parent to his baby sister with Uncle Donny jumping in to help.
The book was hot with a great disaster story, excellent writing as always and lovable characters what more can you ask for.

This was amazing. Realistically done without being too much. I love the twist that Sam brings. I hope that the outcome is her staying with them. Just from what’s been mentioned already you can tell she’s better off. Man I can’t wait for the next one. This is the best disaster read ever. It really makes you think too.

Knowing each other since childhood, Trey has always been crushing on Donovan.
When faced with extreme weather conditions, Trey accepts meticulous planner, Donovan’s invite to brave the storm together whilst looking after a baby.
What ensues is Trey pushing Donovan’s buttons as he tries to let his dominant side guide Donovan’s more anxious demeanour.

A story that ends with you eager for more as these characters still have loads to figure out, relationship wise, with Treys sister and when the storm settles.
I loved seeing them come together and plan, it was then that Trey really grew on me as a character.
I’m looking forward to the next instalment in their journey to happiness.

Loved it!

I loved Donovan and Trey’s story! I feel somewhat conflicted as the events that bring them together should make this book angsty, and yet their burgeoning romance is so sweet and lovely, that’s all I focused on. I’m looking forward to seeing where their story takes them in book 2

Well this story line was a bit different from the usual from this author and as someone who thankfully never experienced such a terrible natural disaster as the one in the book I was able to enjoy it as the background but I imagine it might be a difficult setting for some to read about

MM, Slow Burn, Light BDSM, Contemporary, Romance. Easy to read page-turner with great characters and a compelling plot, a totally original story that had me wondering what was going to happen next! A fantastic read that is not a stand-alone as their story continues in the second book in the series.
