Far beneath the house, it waited, until liberated by the wrath of an unnatural storm. Now, loosed of its prison, it craves the blood and flesh of children. Dispatched to investigate the strange case of the Moonlight Butcher, agent Dennis Cooper will plunge into a nightmare no amount of training and reality could prepare.
Brian G Berry is new to the world of writing. He writes everything from 1980s inspired horror, SCIFI/Action-horror, to the strange. His biggest influences are the writers of the weird including Lovecraft, Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, to the pulp horror authors of the golden age 70s/80s- and a splattering of others. Author of The Pail, A Bloody Christmas, Splatter Fiend Series, Slasherback Series, Campfire Tales Beneath a Pallid Moon, Accursed Ground, Blood Lanes, The Night Mutilator, Thanksgiving Day Massacre, and his newest: SNOW SHARK.
Have you ever stood in front of a pit, looked down into the darkness and wondered what every single person who has ever been in that situation has? Namely: If I pee in there, will I hit something?
This story has nothing to do with those thoughts. However, I’m willing to bet any time you walk past any deep hole in the future that is the thought that will pop into your head.
You are welcome.
INTO THE PIT by Brian G. Berry is an interesting story, and there are two things that stands out to me.
But first, the story: The Moonlight Butcher kidnaps children, kills their parents and feeds them to the thing in the pit. Or is it just a delusional madman whose mind is making excuses for the horrible deeds he is doing?

The two things I want to mention is this: It warms the cockles of my heart to see someone developing as a writer. If you take his first published book – THE CHILD EATER – and you compare it to this one, there is a huge difference and the improvement as a storyteller is a beautiful thing to behold. And I am not the only one who thinks so, which is why D&T Publishing is going to publish a new book by him next year.
The other is that this guy does not hold back on the violence. The fact that the victims are children does not spare them from the cruelties this story has to offer, which firmly puts this firmly in the realm of extreme horror. Lots of blood and gore – so be warned.
First off this is the first time I have read anything from this author and kinda went into this one blind. That being said I have been caught sleeping on this guy holy shit he can write and this story was so bad ass. Into The Pit was a fucking brutal cosmic\ alien \ slasher story that was not only full of gore and brutality it was pretty psychologically fucked up and creepy as well. The twist on this one was so good. Just damn I really enjoyed this one and for as short as it was it packed a heavy gory punch. Looks like I better prioritize my reading list a little and put some Brian G Berry to the top of it. If you haven't read this one or haven't read this author you need to fix that pretty quick cuz this story and author are damn good.
So this story was written on the spur of the moment, after Brian was inspired by an illustration that was drawn for him by Sharon Cook, which is creepy as hell and now this very books front cover! 🖤
When an old well, or pit, is discovered in his basement, Ted starts to hear voices, but that's not all. Left to look after his disabled son, he commences to lead a very unexpected and shocking double life.
With an increase in bloody and savage murders, by a killer dubbed 'The Butcher' it looks like the culprit will continue to get away with it. Despite leaving a horrifically gory trail behind him, not even a single hair is ever left at the scene, making it near impossible to track him down....
This reads like a great classic horror! 🖤 Brian's usual blood soaked slasher style, and so much more! This short tale is absolutely rammed with action, blood, gore, horror, supernatural elements, and brutal imagery! It's creepy, chilling, unnerving, atmospheric and haunting!
And....that... fucking....twist!! 😲 I did not see that coming! Awesome! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Brian Berry coming at you with a terror tale that belongs on celluloid. Seriously, this one needs a VHS box as an add on.
The story jumps into the thick of things quickly with Red, our protagonist, thinking back on a horrific incident twenty years prior. There's a pit in his basement that conceals a creature that consumes children. Some people, including the cops, think it's a killer called The Moonlight Butcher, but it's a far more sinister thing than that.
Here's an exchange I loved, and it shows Berry's ability to move from the mundane to the gothic with ease. He has masterful control of language:
“A maniac? No, the man was a ghoul. A lurking night horror, skulking in the shadows of blackened homes on windy, moon frosted nights. An eater of man, the boiler of children, an exhumed goblin from ethereal voids and accursed tombs.”
Give me 1991 Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs, Full Moon Pictures, Stuart Gordon--that's the vibe.
My first time reading Berry, but certainly not my last. This dude can flat-out write. Don't believe me? Here, try this on for size: "Beneath the fresh red gloss that painted the walls, you’d be hard pressed to find an eye to distinguish what color had once covered the interior paper. Not only were the walls victims of some impossible flushing of blood that boggled the mind to digest, but the bodies, horribly mauled, mutilated to unfathomable degrees, were mind rupturing." See what I mean? Vivid, visceral fiction. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. Highly recommended!
A nightmare on pages, you're drawn into the dark secret of a small town. You can feel the terror that the whole town experiences at the hands of the Moonlight Butcher. Fast paced, the tension starts to reach peak levels in the first two chapters. Excellent book!
This is my first Berry book. And definitely won't be my last. I really enjoyed this. Very well written and descriptive. I did figure "IT" out before the ending but it still did not take anything away from it. Plus there was a nice little ending twist. Great story!!
This is a very short but impactful read that will make your hairs on your neck stand firm!
We follow Cooper in this book, who is sent to a small town community to figure out who the Moonlight Butcher is. Meanwhile, Red is going about his miserable life, doing something’s bidding.
This book was so fast paced and every sentence seemed poetic and impactful. Brian G. Berry has a way of drawing you in with his fantastic prose and then leaving you with a pit in your stomach.
I love, love, LOVE this book and I wish it received more love from the horror community.
For me, this was a solid FIVE OUT OF FIVE FREAKING STAR BOOK! Loved it so much!
What a great blood soaked read! This is something out of a awesome 80’s creature feature. Brian knows how to deliver a great horror story! Stay out of the Pit!!!!! Loved it!
