Philadelphia is a series of neighborhoods. We have South Philly, Southwest Philly, Grays Ferry, Fishtown, Kensington, Olney, the Great Northeast, the list is almost endless. McCullough's book concentrates on Southwest Philadelphia and how we lived daily. From the late 1950s to the mid-1980s, McCullough discusses the games he used to play and how his neighbors kept a close eye on all of us His hope is to bring back wonderful memories to those who grew up this way and to others who are looking for a smile, a laugh, or maybe a tear or two.
Growing up in Southwest Philly this book was great to read! Although, I didn’t know many of his friends (characters) I had the same friends by different names and the same type of stories. Although I moved away over 30 years ago, I realize that community shaped me as a son, husband, father, friend, employee and manager. Great to know there are others who feel the same!
This book is a must read for those born in Philadelphia, PA in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The author describes the old movie houses, corner stores, hoagies, cheesesteaks, and all of the things that are unique to the old neighborhood.
Every chapter contains a relatable element whether describing family, friends and/or places. A wonderful read especially for those born and bred in SWP. Thanks, Michael McCullough, for taking us down Memory Lane with your stories. 🕊
