“LAND OF SNOW AND ASHES” beautifully written by Petra Rautianen and skilfully translated by David Hackston, is a powerful historical fiction novel, about Lapland’s buried history of Nazi crimes against the Sami people.
- “Finnish Lapland, 1944. A young Finnish soldier is called to work as an interpreter at a Nazi prison camp. Surrounded by cruelty and death, he struggles to hold on to his humanity but is dedicated to writing in his diary. A few years after the war has ended, journalist Inkeri is assigned to investigate the rapid development of remote Western Lapland. Her real motivation is more personal – she is following a lead on her husband who disappeared during the war. But the villagers don’t want to dwell on the past and Inkeri’s questions provoke hostility and suspicious silences. As she learns more about her mysterious tenant Olavi, she tries to befriend a young Sami girl and starts to uncover disturbing facts that were never supposed to come to light.” -
“Land of Snow and Ashes” is a very impressive debut. Both plot and character driven, this really is a praiseworthy story about a little known part of World War 2’s history and the secrets hidden beneath the snow and ice after the war ended. Following the Lapland War, the land was covered in ash due to the devastation left behind by the enemies but the Finnish people were severely motivated to redevelop their country.
The Lapland War was fought between Finland and Nazi Germany 1944-1945, in Finland’s northernmost Lapland province. Sadly the events in the story are very much based on strictly researched facts, highlighting the misery and strife the Sami people experienced. Niilo Pesonen, who is mentioned in the book was a real life anatomy professor, who was controversially involved in physical racial profiling on people, both before and after death.
I enjoyed the dual timelines, this fit together perfectly as the story developed. I was very surprised by the concluding revelations and I found it addictive but also harrowing and shocking at many of the events as they unfolded. I’m pleased to have read “Land of Snow and Ashes”, I wasn’t aware of this part of history and I feel it needs to be more widely known. Perfectly translated into English, I’d happily recommend this book to interested readers and would read more by this author in the future.

A harrowing tale of the Second World War, of a time when Finland was allied with Nazi Germany but one that covers issues of identity, nationhood, and belonging which remain tenuous, unresolved and relevant even unto the present, Land of Snow and Ashes (2022) by Petra Rautiainen was published in Finnish in 2020 and in this translation by David Hackston in 2022 by Pushkin Press.
Land of Snow and Ashes is a story told in two timelines, separated by a few years—one in the midst of the war in 1944 and the other beginning just a few years later in 1947—the first spreads out over the course of that year while the second progresses over a few years. The 1944 timeline is told in the first-person voice of a young Finnish interpreter and guard, whose name we gradually learn (Väinö Remes) posted at a Nazi camp near Lake Inari, in the form of entries in his diary. In these we trace his everyday duties—from escorting prisoners to different worksites to interviews and much else, as also his interest in and relationship with a bloodletter Saara working at the camp. This is a time when Finland was not only allied with Germany but the aim to create a Greater Finland dominated.
In the second timeline, in 1947 Inkeri Linqvist, a photographer and journalist, arrives at a Samí village, ostensibly to report on the rebuilding of a land that has been all but destroyed by war. But she has another motive—to find her husband, Kaarlo who disappeared during the war. In the village she soon befriends a Samí elder Piera and his granddaughter Bigga Marja, the latter developing an interest in photography and over time becoming a sort of assistant to Inkeri, learning to take pictures and the various elements that go into it.
As the two narratives proceed, gradually small bits and pieces of information are revealed—indicating links between the two, but not really connecting all together till the end—in that sense following a ‘mystery’ pattern. But more importantly in the events of the two storylines, slowly also come to light the horrors of the camps, both activities that are occurring on the surface and those beneath, in the service of eugenics and racial profiling studies carried out as much in Finland as by the Nazis. And while the camps may have been disbanded (rather almost destroyed) after the war, the goals (creating a Finnish identity) and accompanying exploitation of the Samí people continue as Inkeri (and us readers) shockingly discover. Though the novel unfolds entirely in the historical context, the translator David Hackston’s enlightening afterword helps understand how these themes continue to hold relevance in the present.
Land of Snow and Ashes is not an easy to read novel but certainly a very relevant one. The book touches on aspects of the Second World War—as it unfolded in Finland (again Hackston’s helpful afterwords helps us understand the three broad phases it can be classed in)—and the complex relationship between the dominant Finnish and Samí peoples/cultures with attempts at assimilation in both seemingly benign as well as more shocking ways. These were topics I was ignorant of (a key reason why I chose to read the book), and reading this book has made me want to learn more (also of Finnish history generally). In both narratives, alongside what is occurring before our eyes, we are also aware of something just beneath the surface, hints of which we get off and on, all of them together making up the full picture. There are some graphic scenes, a couple of which were especially upsetting but things which need to be known all the same. (On a personal note, for some reason when I downloaded this book, while I knew and chose the book because of its subject matter, I had it in my mind that this was a Pushkin Children’s imprint and would thus be a YA book. When I started reading, therefore, I was taken aback by its darkness, and only then thought to check again).
Among the books around World War II that I have read so far, this is probably the only one (so far as I can remember) which touches on the impact of the camps on those in-charge. They may have been those who revelled in the atrocities they meted out, but there were also those who had to cope with and come to terms with what they had to do—substance abuse was one of the ways out, writing (even if they couldn’t really write) another. Remes for instance seems to at least in a vague way support or at least not oppose the Greater Finland agenda, but he is uncomfortable with a lot of what he sees at the camp, much of this having its impact on him as well.
By bringing to light the exploitation of the Samí peoples and attempts at imposition of Finnish language and culture, the book also highlights questions of culture, language and identity and their place in the conception of nationhood. Aspects significant not only in the Finnish context but equally in other parts of the world.
The landscape likewise is snowy and stark, but amidst it is also some beauty—a leaf or flower peeping out, the majestic reindeer—but their beauty must exist alongside the realities of life in such a space.
While there is much that is bleak, heartbreaking and agonising, there is also some hope and light—light being relevant to Inkeri’s personal timeline too; vital for her photography and something that also causes her trouble as one sees—towards the end answers do emerge, though unlike a ‘mystery’ novel, everything does not neatly tie up. This is after all real life, with things one must accept never knowing and others which one must bear in mind and face so as to at least try to reach some semblance of the facades of civilisation and respect for life that we claim to live by.

The translator of this novel, David Hackston, writes a very informative afterword..
The definitive novel about the Winter War (for me at least..) is Roy Jacobsen’s The Burnt-Out Town of Miracles. This makes an excellent accompaniment, Rautiainen tells the story of Nazi crimes against the Sámi people.
There are two timelines: one, set in 1944 during the German occupation, shortly before Finland’s peace treaty with Russia; the other, takes place five years later when Inkeri, a journalist and the Finnish protagonist of the novel, visits Lapland. Inkeri arrives to report on the rebuilding of Lapland and the continuing attempt to integrate the remaining members of the indigenous Sámi into Finnish society.
The key to the narrative though, is a young girl, Bigga-Marja (a name half Finnish and half Sámi), who at 12 years old witnessed the genocide perpetrated by the Nazis, and the some years later the new Finnish government’s attempts to integrate the Sámi with the help of scientists. Incredibly it is the latter that is the most affecting and disturbing, as “researchers” appear in their village measuring skulls and taking photographs of naked children when ‘researchers’ appear in their community measuring skulls and taking photographs of naked children, Bigga-Marja suffers flashbacks to the Nazi atrocities and runs away into the freezing wilderness. Though she is found by her grandfather, she has retreated into herself and will not communicate.
Like Jacobsen’s novel, this is frequently disturbing reading, but a very necessary insight into the barbarism that took place in Lapland.
The narrator of the 1944 timeline is an interpreter and observer of the concentration camp, writing in diary format. Towards the end, in which there are many reveals, he records that the camp is one of the places that body parts are harvested for Mengele’s experiments.

This is a very skilfully written novel, that though it’s roots are firmly in Finnish history, provides all the elements of a thriller that makes it particular gripping.
It also manages to do what few other novels about the war do, which is to end on a bright note, as Inkeri becomes so involved, that she decides to stay and immerse herself in Sámi culture.
I will add to this a couple of comments made by a fellow contributor to TLS at the Guardian…
Afaik (and I have read a (literally) awful lot about Mengele) he never used any body parts. His major medical experiments were all with live human beings.
Does this matter when it comes to a novel? To me it does: use a fictional name when you describe fictional events. Ascribing fictional events to a historical person is a no go. Especially when, as it seems to be the case here, the real horror of what this person did is diminished by the fictional account

This is turning the facts upside down. Finland was never occupied by the Nazis. It was the opposite: Finland had sought and achieved an alliance with the Nazis in their war against the SU.It was not something they wanted to be widely known then, of course, and also not now, of course.

I could not find anything supporting this claim. But absence of evidence does not mean evidence of absence.
So: does it make sense?
The Nazis did have a considerable geopolitical interest in this alliance, fighting alongside the Fins against the SU.
Why would they have been interested, at that time, in the extermination of a fairly small people in the most northern regions?
To clear an small area of wilderness with an unforgiving climate for resettlement by Germans after the endsieg?
Or did they just spend a lot of money to build and man concentration camps because that was "what they did", kill ethnic minorities wherever?
Or to send body parts "harvested" in concentration camps over thousands of km to Germany, where this commodity was, as everybody knows, in short supply during that time?
The genocide of the Sami started, as far as I could find out, in the first three decades of the 20th century. Sweden and Norway were very keen, Russia was apparently not as bad (which still is bad enough) for some time. Might take a bit more digging to find out what Finland did and when.
So, from what you wrote, this piece of "historical fiction" seems to distort, possibly even to pervert, historical facts. Which I find completely unacceptable, to put it very politely.
Naturally, Finland has its own unique narrative of the Second World War. Finns consider the war as at least three separate conflicts: the Winter War (1939-40), the Continuation War (1941-4) and the Lapland War (1944-5), and it is during the latter conflict and its aftermath that the events here take place..

A woman arrived with the doctor. I understand she is a shamanistic bloodletter. A witch. Noaidi, in the local tongue. For some reason she is working here as a nurse. She didn’t say anything to us and got straight to work. But I did catch sight of her eyes. They are a strange colour. I have never seen anything like it. I was afraid to look into them but couldn’t help myself. They were like freshly blossomed heath violets or fat bilberries glistening in the morning dew. Not quite blue, but something altogether different..

“None of us can predict how we will behave under duress. None of us know the limits of our endurance, we don’t know when or how we will break. But everybody breaks eventually, it’s just a question of time.” His voice was calm and steady.
Land of Snow and Ashes is a sobering and stark historical fiction novel of a slice of World War Two history set in the region of Lapland in Northern Finland. This is definitely not something that I had any knowledge of and I must admit it is a dark and violent chapter, made all the darker by the stark polar landscape in which it occurs. The novel exemplifies elements of racial superiority and the Nazi quest for racial purity against the backdrop of the Sámi peoples of Lapland.
Petra Rautiainen, Finnish author, has done an amazing job with such sensitive subjects, respectfully privileging these intersecting narratives. She does so from the standpoint of a person from the dominant Finnish culture seeking to give voice to a minority race caught up in Nazi wartime atrocities.
I find it hard to just finish this novel and not sit in a reflective space with regards the subject matter. Firstly, I am compelled to read more about the World War Two events as they unfolded in Finland and across Lapland. I am keen to read more about the Sámi culture and peoples especially from the viewpoint of the discourse between dominant and marginalised culture. I also want to understand more of this extreme and harsh part of the world and the impact of geography and climate on how life has evolved here. The notion of racial purity and eugenics as it occurred during the war is also as intriguing as it is horrifying.
I continue to be horrified at how humans behave and the quote from the end of the novel that I wrote out above highlight the breaking point that all humans are subject to. I dare not point a finger...
Rautianinen has unwrapped a hidden chapter and explored it in detail in this historical and fictional work. Five bleak stars from me.

Petra Rautiainen tarttuu esikoiskirjassaan kiinnostavaan aiheeseen. Toisen maailmansodan loppuvaiheisiin ja sodanjälkeisiin vuosiin Suomessa sijoittuva tarina kuvaa suomalaisten yhteistyötä Natsi-Saksan kanssa Lapissa olleilla vankileireillä, joilla pidetään ei-toivottua ainesta.
Sotavuosiin sijoittuvassa osassa tarinaa kertojana on Väinö Remes, joka tulee Inariin vankileirille, jota ei ole merkitty suomalaisten karttoihin. Ei sentään vangiksi, vaan sotilasviranomaiseksi ja tulkiksi. Leirillä on toinenkin suomalainen, Olavi Heiskanen, joka nousee niin ikään keskeiseksi hahmoksi.
Tarinan toinen juonne alkaa vuodesta 1947, kun Enontekiöön saapuu Inkeri Lindqvist. Inkeri on maailmallakin matkaillut toimittaja ja valokuvaaja, joka saapuu Enontekiöön kuvaamaan, kirjoittamaan juttuja Lapin jälleenrakennuksesta ja etsimään miestään, joka katosi sotavuosina. Inkeri haluaa saada selville, mitä miehelle tapahtui.

Petra Rautiainen on Suomen kiinnostavimpia nykykirjailijoita. Tuhkaan piirretty maa on niin taitavasti rakennettu kokonaisuus, että se suorastaan häikäisee. Historiallinen ulottuvuus, jossa jatkosodan aika ja Lapin jälleenrakentamisen aika 40-luvun lopussa, vuorottelevat, on kiehtovaa ja uskottavasti kuvattu. Lapin luonto, saamelaisten asema, sodan arvet ja kielten sekamelska luovat hurjaa kudelmaa.
Ihmiskohtalot repeytyvät sinne ja tänne. Intohimot, katumus, julmuus... Päähenkilö Inkeri yrittää selvittää miehensä kohtaloa, mutta kukaan ei ole halukas puhumaan sota-ajoista mitään. Väinö Remeksen päiväkirjat puolestaan lyö kiinni vankileirin oloihin ja sodan kaoottisuuteen.
Taitavan rakennelman oheen jäin kaipaamaan vielä jotain tarttumapintaa. Ehkä aavistus lisää armoa olisi lämmittänyt, mutta onko sitä sodassa tarjolla kenellekään.

We were on our way to Finnish Lapland for a cross-country skiing holiday and I wanted to read a book from a Finnish author (because I don't think I ever have, shame on me!). Then I saw this book, situated in Inari, the area where we were going. It couldn't be a better choice, location-wise, I thought. I started reading on the plane and was immediately drawn into the story. Who thinks that they've read everything about WWII, here is a story about the role of Finland that I had no idea of (Finland allied with Germany against Russia, but later turned against Germany in the Lapland war). There were Finnish/German prison camps in the far north and it's hard to imagine how circumstances must have been. The story alternates between the diary notes of a prison camp gard/interpreter at the end of the war (1944) and few years after the war, a woman who's searching for her lost husband, whose traces lead to the prison camp. I learned so many things, about Finland/Lapland's role in the war, the Sami and how they were treated, Lapland's nature. I think I read this book in one stretch, wonderful and complex with a surprising finish. Sometimes random finds are the best!

Esikoisromaani, josta huokuvat poltetun Lapin savu ja jälleenrakennuksen keskellä kytevät muistot. Henkilövetoisessa proosassa vuorottelevat perinteisemmin kerrottu nykyhetki ja päiväkirjamuotoinen mennyt. Ratkaisu toimii hyvin juonen punonnassa ja sodan aikana vankileirillä tapahtuneen vähittäisessä paljastamisessa. Lyhytlauseinen tyyli on iskevää, pohdinnoin koristeltua, rankkoja asioita kaunistelematonta. Ei voi kuitenkaan puhua mässäilevästä inhorealismista. Saamelaisten henkilöhahmojen ääni tulee näkyviin moninaisena, alleviivaamattomana, vaikka vääryyksiä käsitelläänkin suorasanaisesti.
”Työskennellessään ateljeessa Inkeri oli kyllästynyt nopeasti täydellisten muotokuvien luomiseen ja alkanut etsiä kuviinsa merkkejä, joita ateljeekuvaajat nimittivät virheiksi. Tuhkaan piirretty maa on vahva ja taidokkaasti kerrottu esikoisromaani, joka piti otteessaan tiukasti. Kahdessa aikatasossa kerrottu romaani kuljettaa toimittaja Inkerin mukana Lapin jälleen rakennukseen ja toisessa aikatasossa palataan Väinön päiväkirjamerkintojen muodossa sota-aikaan ja Lapissa toimineelle vankileirille. Kirja paljastaa vaiettuja salaisuuksia sekä tuo esille saamelaisten kokemaa kurjuutta.
Pidin tästä kirjasta aivan valtavan paljon. Suosittelen lämpimästi lukemaan, jos aihe vähääkään kiinnostaa.

En olisi tämän kirjan halunnut saada "kunniaa" olla vuoden ensimmäinen yhden tähden kirja, mutta näin kuitenkin kävi. Aihe oli todella mielenkiintoinen ja oikeastaan siitä nämä niin sanotut pisteet. Kirjoittaminen oli kyllä muuten ihan ok mutta oli aika luettelomaista ja sekavaa. Lyhyet, liian lyhyet, kappaleet sekoittivat entisestään lukemista. Niistä asioista, joista olisi halunnut lukea enemmän, ne ohitettiin liian nopeasti tai annettiin vain olettaa, että näin oli käynyt mutta sitten jaariteltiin vähän liikaa niistä asioista, joista ei olisi niin tarvinnut. Kirjassa ei oikeastaan juurikaan tapahtunut mitään ja kun tapahtui, no kuten sanoin, ne jätettiin niin, että sai ite miettiä, että niin oli käynyt. Ei hyvä ollenkaan. Tottakai saa olla sellaisiakin kohtia, ja usein onkin hienoa, että ei kaikkea pureskella lukijalle palasiksi mutta sen pitäisi olla kuitenkin vain muutaman kerran, ei niin, että jokaisen mahdollisen asian saa itse arvailla. Samankaltaiset nimet menivät itsellä ainakin sekaisin, tällaista ongelmaa ei usein ole suomalaisen kirjallisuuden kanssa ollut. Oli ihan hieno idea kuljettaa tarinaa eri vuosina, mutta koin jotenkin että aikaero oli liian pieni. Se oli myös erikoinen ratkaisu, että toinen aika kulki nopeammin kuin toinen. En oikeastaan pitänyt siitäkään. Se olisi voinut toimia, jos aikaero olisi ollut isompi. Takakannessa puhuttiin Lapin jälleenrakentamisesta. No olihan sitä, mutta aika vähän. Siitä olisi ollut kiva lukea enemmän ja itse leireistä.
Kirja menee Helmet- lukuhaasteessa 2024 kohtaan numero 27. Kirja kertoo jälleenrakentamisesta. Kuten jo kerroinkin, aika vähän sitä jälleenrakentamista oli, mutta päätin laittaa tämän tähän kohtaan. Olisi se toki sopinut muutamaan muuhunkin haasteen kohtaan, mutta niihin olin valinnut jo sellaiset kirjat, jotka haluan lukea haasteeseen mutta eivät sovi sitten taas muihin kohtiin kuin niihin mihin tämä olisi sopinut.

Upea ja vaikuttava esikoisromaani! Sekä tämä kirja että hiljattain ilmestynyt Tommi Kinnusen kirja ovat hämmästyttäneet minua - tällaisiako asioita on tapahtunut Suomessa, enkä ole tiennyt niistä juuri mitään? Rautiaisen teksti on samanaikaisesti sekä kaunista että lukijaansa säästelemättömän karua, saksalaisten vankileirien tapahtumat kuvautuvat joka tapauksessa elävästi. Juonivetoinen tarina houkutti lukemaan kirjan loppuun lähes yhdeltä istumalta.

In het voorlaatste jaar van WO II trekt een Finse soldaat naar een gevangenkamp van de Nazi's in Fins Lapland. Een drietal jaar later maakt de journaliste en fotografe Inkeri dezelfde beweging, enerzijds om verslag uit te brengen van hoe het er in het gebied van de Sami aan toe gaat, anderzijds om een spoor terug te vinden van haar man, die aan het eind van de oorlog spoorloos verdwenen is. Beide verhalen worden verteld vanuit deze twee perspectieven, waarbij het tweede deels als een spiegel fungeert voor het eerste.
De spaarzame info - onder de vorm van korte dagboekachtige tekstjes - uit het eerste verhaal krijgt mondjesmaat een verklaring in het tweede. Een beproefd narratologisch procédé dat voor de nodige spanning zou moeten zorgen, maar dat te weinig doet. De historische achtergrond, alsook de couleur locale zijn dan wel weer de moeite. Rautiainen, master in Geschiedenis en Culturele Studies, neemt haar tijd om een (voor mij althans) onbekend stuk geschiedenis van Finland te vertellen. Dat daar drie afzonderlijke oorlogen plaatsvonden bijvoorbeeld, was mij vreemd. Van 1939 tot '40 voerden ze de Winteroorlog tegen Sovjet-Unie, daarna de Vervolgoorlog van 1941-1944, waarin ze met Nazi-Duitsland als bondgenoot de aan de Russen verloren gebieden proberen terug te bemachtigen, en tot slot de Laplandoorlog (1944-1945) waarin de Finnen de Duitsers via het noorden wilden verjagen, richting Noorwegen.
Ze brengt de context van deze oorlog door een individueel verhaal en door de ogen van een paar overlevers, wat de kracht van haar roman ten goede komt. Dat de grens tussen wat kan en niet kan, tussen dader en slachtoffer vaak heel dun is, zet ze zo des te krachtiger in de verf. En dat hoe wij bepaalde zaken te zien en te horen krijgen vaak een kwestie van perspectief is: "Als alles anders was afgelopen, was wat fout was niet fout geweest."
Ze besteedt naast de context van WO II heel wat aandacht aan het lot van de Sami, de nomadische indigene bevolking van het Noord-Europese Lapland. Die spreken meerdere Samische talen, die tot de Fins-Oegrische talenfamilie behoren. De Samische talen, vandaag de dag door minder dan 20000 actieve sprekers gesproken, zijn omwille van meerdere redenen met uitsterven bedreigd. Bovendien waren en zijn de Sami slachtoffer van discriminatie en worden ze onderdrukt op meerdere vlakken.
Eén tip: lees het voorwoord van de vertaler niet voor je het verhaal zelf gelezen hebt. Ik vond het alvast geen meerwaarde en niet fijn om die info op voorhand te krijgen: die had de uitgeverij mijn inziens beter na het eigenlijke verhaal geplaatst.

In the middle years of World War II, Finland was allied with Nazi Germany against Russia, a mutual enemy. After the Moscow Armistice, the Germans retreated in disgrace, burning as many buildings and planting as many landmines as they could (“the Lapland War”). I gleaned this helpful background information from Hackston’s preface. The story that follows is in two strands: one is set in 1944 and told via diary entries from Väinö Remes, a Finnish soldier called up to interpret at a Nazi prison camp in Inari. The other, in third person, takes place between 1947 and 1950, the early years of postwar reconstruction. Inkeri, a journalist, has come to Enontekiö to find out what happened to her husband. An amateur photographer, she teaches art to the local Sámi children and takes on one girl, Bigga-Marja, as her protégée.
Collusion and secrets; escaped prisoners and physical measurements being taken of the Sámi: there are a number of sinister hints that become clearer as the novel goes on. I felt a distance from the main characters that I could never quite overcome, such that the reveals didn’t land with as much power as I think was intended. Still, this has the kind of forthright storytelling and precise writing that fans of Hubert Mingarelli should appreciate.

It was a touching book, I couldn't put it down. I read it in one night. In fact, I did not understand the characters of the story, their actions, their thinking. Although I am the same with the Holocaust. It's probably because I can't imagine myself in the shoes of the characters. Therefore, the book remained a stranger, I was only an outside observer of what happened. I would like to believe in love and goodness, but similar books and the reality of the present prove that we are all enemies of each other. It was interesting to read about the Sámi people, their traditions, and their language. They were strangers, yet familiar. A people that remained outsiders did not assimilate. They are considered inferior, yet more valuable than others. Perhaps they are relatives of my nation.

Oikein hyvä kirja. Kovin syvälle en henkilöihin päässyt, varmaan koska kirja kuitenkin suht lyhyt ja sisältää paljon asiaa sekä kaksi vuorottelevaa aikatasoa, mutta tarina oli hyvä ja suomalaiselle aika rankkaakin luettavaa. Koin puutteena, että kirjasta puuttui tekijän jälkisanat, joista olisi selvinnyt kuinka paljon oli faktaa tapahtumien ja henkilöiden takana, mutta onnekseni nyt heti kirjan lopetettuani törmäsin Ylen juuri tänään 10.1.2021 kirjasta julkaisemaan artikkeliin( https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-11723555 ), jossa kirjailija vastasi kaikkiin mielessäni pyörineisiin kysymyksiin. Vastaus on kyllä, kaikki tapahtumat perustuvat tiukasti tutkittuihin faktoihin. Ikävä kyllä.
Mutta tosi hyvä, että näistä puhutaan vihdoin Suomessakin.

Petra Rautiaisen esikoiskirja, Tuhkaan piirretty maa, kertoi vuodesta 1944, jota kirjoitti Väinö Remes, ja sen lisäksi toimittaja Inkeri Lindqvistin sotavuosien jälkeisestä ajasta Lapissa, kun hän etsi sotavuosina kadonnutta miestään. Kirjan tarinassa uppouduttiin vaiettuihin ja salattuihin vankileirioloihin, jonne tuotiin eri maiden vankeja rakentamaan teitä ja linnoituksia saksalaisten sotatarpeita varten. Lisäksi vankileireillä tehtiin salassa pidettyjä tutkimuksia vangeille.
Kirja nosti esille saamelaisten kokeman kurjuuden. Tosi ikävä juttu oli, että esi-isien haudoista vietiin luut Helsinkiin tutkittavaksi. Toivottavasti luut on palautettu.

Lappföldről általában az a benyomás, hogy vannak ott cuki rénszarvasok, színes ruhába öltözött hagyományőrző számik, joikkoló énekesek, északi fény, és káprázatos természet.
Aztán kiderül, voltak ott nácik, fogolytáborok, fajnemesítő program, lottanővérek, internátus számi gyerekeknek, tisztára úgy és olyan átnevelő célból, mint az amerikai indiánok gyerekeinek, és felperzselt föld tele hullával.
A szerző nem rejti el a borzalmakat és nem is tolja a képembe, hogy csakazértis kegyetlenkedjen. Remekül teremt hangulatot a tájjal, az időjárással. Józanul mutatja be azt, amit csak nem józanul lehet elkövetni. Eleinte tiszta, kik a nézőpontkarakterek, aztán ez a könyv második felében változik, mert behozza Kostela és Olavi szemszögét is, ami írástechnikailag késői, és másképp is egy lehetett volna oldani, hogy az általuk bemutatott részletre a meglévő hangokkal fény derüljön.
Meglehet, több olyan könyv is létezik már, ami bemutatja Lappföld sötét történelmi éjszakáit, és túlmutat a rusztikus vándorló-állattartó számi kereten. Nekem ez volt az első találkozásom az ilyen irodalommal.

Lately I've been wanting to read more WW2 stories, but the ones I read this year have been somewhat disappointing. I was therefore pleasantly surprised with this one, it's a book I never knew existed but it was exactly what I've been searching for.
Maybe I'm just biased cause the story takes place in Finnish Lapland, part of it in Inari, and I love reading about the north.
The way the author writes about the bleakness and harshness of the landscape, the people who live in it, makes it all come alive. Even though I usually enjoy flowery language, I found her concise, straightforward and unembellished writing style reflects the very nature of the region and the people she writes about. The horrors of war and the atrocious treatment of the Sami people were presented in a very subtle, subdued manner, not the usual shocking and overly emotional approach most writers have, especially when it comes to ww2 stories. It all just felt very Finnish to me and I loved that.
I was captivated by the story from start to finish.

Behandlar ett viktig ämne, fånglägren i Lappland på 1940-talet och Lapplandskriget, som i Finland kanske nedtystats och det inte talats så mycket om. Karaktärerna förblev rätt anonyma, ingen av dem lärde man egentligen känna. Gillade ändå upplägget med två parallella berättelser som till slut sammanflätas. 2,5 stjärnor

Bücher zum Thema Zweiter Weltkrieg habe ich bereits unzählige gelesen. Finnland hatte ich jedoch noch nie als Setting. Es ist wirklich interessant, wie man trotz laufender Lektüre zum Thema immer wieder Neues erfährt, obwohl man denkt, es wäre längst ausgeschöpft.
Der Roman von Petra Rautiainen basiert auf zwei Zeitebenen, wobei diesmal die Zeitabstände nur wenige Jahre beinhalten.
Die Journalistin und Fotografin Inkeri reist 1947 in den Westen des finnischen Lapplands. Sie ist auf der Suche nach ihrem Mann Kaarlo, der sich angeblich im Jahre 1944 in einem Gefangenenlager in der Gegend aufgehalten hat. Ihren wahren Grund, warum sie nach Enontekiö gekommen ist, verschweigt sie jedoch. Sie gibt an, dass sie Artikel über den Wiederaufbau des Landes schreibt und über die Kultur der Samen berichten möchte. Inkeri hat sich in dem kleinen Dorf ein Haus gekauft und freundet sich mit dem Vorbesitzer Piera und seiner Enkelin Bigga-Marja an. Als Untermieter bleibt ihr der etwas kauzige Olavi Heiskanen erhalten.
Piera und Bigga-Marja eröffnen Inkeri Einblicke in die Lebensweise der Samen. Inkerei beginnt an der hiesigen Schule Kunst zu unterrichten, doch auch nach einigen Monaten Aufenthalt in der Gegend, öffnen sich die Menschen ihr gegenüber nicht. Sie haben kein Interesse die Vergangenheit wieder hervorzukramen und wollen sich nicht an das Geschehene erinnern...
Im zweiten Leseabschnitt sind wir im Jahre 1944 und lesen in den Tagebucheinträgen des Dolmetschers Väinö Remes, der sich als Übersetzer in einem deutschen Lager in Inari befindet. Die Einträge spiegeln den Schrecken dieses Krieges wider. Dabei kommt es zu einigen sehr schlimmen Szenen, die aber irgendwie sehr nüchtern geschildert werden, jedoch ziemlich unter die Haut gehen. Gerade diese emotionale Kälte der Einträge haben mich schockiert. Auf der anderen Seite konnte mich diese sehr sachliche Erzählweise über Grausamkeiten nicht ganz so erreichen, wie in anderen Büchern, die ich bisher zum Thema Rassenverfolgung, Lagerleben und Vernichtung gelesen habe.
Die Geschichte wechselt zwischen den Tagebucheinträgen, die in der "Ich-Form" geschrieben sind, und der Spurensuche von Inkari in der 3. Person. Dabei wird das Geheimhis um Kaarlo und die Beteiligung der Menschen vor Ort, viel zu sehr in die Länge gezogen. Bereits im dritten Abschnitt war mir klar, welche Person mehr über Inkeris Mann weiß....
Andere Handlungsstränge versanden hingegen leider im Nichts.
Die Beschreibungen des kargen Landes und die klirrende Kälte sind sehr lebendig von der Autorin dargestellt, trotz des sonst eher nüchternen Schreibstils. Man erfährt mehr über die Samen und ihre Ausgrenzung gegenüber der finnischen Bevölkerung, die sich als rein arisch ansehen. Entsetzt war ich über die weiterhin erfolgten Vermessungen der Kinder nach dem Ende des Krieges, um diejenigen, die aus dem Raster fallen, zu untersuchen und "auszusondern".
Generell blieben mir die Figuren eher fremd, bis auf Britt-Marja, die ein sehr intelligentes Mädchen ist und sich den Vorurteilen ihres Volkes gegenüber immer bewusst ist. Außerdem interessiert sie sich für die Fotografie und möchte diese unbedingt von Inkeri erlernen.
Das Setting und die Idee haben mir gut gefallen, aber die Umsetzung konnte mich leider nur mäßig überzeugen. "Land aus Schnee und Asche" beginnt gut, lässt aber stark nach und wird im Laufe der Geschichte künstlich zu sehr in die Länge gezogen. Mich konnte das Buch leider nicht wirklich überzeugen und bleibt somit nur Mittelmaß.

Ein außergewöhnliches Setting mit einem interessanten Thema, das mich jedoch nicht richtig packen konnte. Ich kam mir eher wie ein Beobachter vor, als mitten in der Geschichte zu sein. Das Geheimnis um Kaarlo wurde mir zu sehr in die Länge gezogen und der eher nüchterne und emotionslose Schreibstil tat sein Übriges.

‘Voor de oorlog was de dood gewoon de dood geweest. Eenvoudig. Alledaags. Iedereen kon er zomaar opeens bij neervallen. Je had geleefd en dan was je dood. Maar dan de kampen. Daar waren leven en dood nauwelijks van elkaar te onderscheiden. Daar leek de dood pas te komen als alle hoop vervlogen was. Tussen leven en dood liep een bont en kronkelend pad, gekleurd door angst en pijn. Hoop was het allerlaatste waaraan een lens bezweek. Misschien leek het wel wat op onderkoeling, dacht Olavi. Vlak voor je doodvroor, ervaarde je een diepe, zachte warmte.’

Tässä vasta julkaistussa esikoisromaanissa ollaan Lapissa, saksalaisten pitämällä vankileirillä vuonna 1944 sekä ajassa muutamaa vuotta sodan jälkeen, kun etelästä Enontekiöön muuttaa Inkeri etsimään sodassa kadonnutta aviomiestään Kaarloa.
Rautiainen kirjoittaa välillä todella karuista asioista (vankileirien olot, kuolema, rodunjalostus), mutta tekee sen tavalla, joka ei mässäile kauheuksilla - pidin siitä. Minulle kaikkein kiinnostavin asia kirjassa oli se, miten paljon kirjassa kuvataan suomalaisen valtaväestön ja saamelaisten välisiä suhteita ja saamelaisten asemaa. Tällaisesta en ole ennen lukenut romaania, ja pidänkin juuri tätä kirjan suurimpana ansiona.
Kukaan kirjan henkilöistä ei oikeastaan päästänyt lähelleen, enkä lukijana oppinut pitämään tai välittämään heistä, jolloin heidän kohtalonsa oli lopulta minulle hyvin samantekevä. Kirja käsittelee hyvin kiinnostavia aiheita, mutta ei tämä jotenkaan tullut iholle.

Tässä kirjassa oli paljon hyviä ja kiinnostavia aineksia. Lapin sodan aikaan ja jälkeen tapahtuneet asiat ovat ainakin itselle olleet vähän hämärän peitossa ja tähän olikin sitten poimittu teemasta näkökulmaa dramaattisemmasta päästä. Konteksti ja sen kuvaus olivatkin kunnossa, mutta varsinainen tarina tökki. Kahdessa ajassa kulkeva kerronta oli minusta monin paikoin sekavaa ja vähän töksähtelevääkin. Loppuun säästelty arvoitus pedattiin niin hartaasti, että ärsytti (”mene jo asiaan”) ja sivujuonet olivat niin leimallisen sivujuonia, että tuntuivat turhilta (esim Bigga-Marjan kasvu). Tietty paatoksellisuuskin ärsytti - saamelaisten oikeudet (tai niiden puute) olisivat nousseet riittävästi pelkän tarinan ja faktojen voimin, dialogit tuntuivat teennäisen päälleliimatuilta.

In an effort of trying to catch up with Sami literature, I picked up “A land of snow and ashes” and I didn’t like it.
It is set during and after the Second World War in northern Finland and follows the story of the Nazi concentration camps built there from different point of views.
To make it short: Firstly it was very grotesque (don’t eat while reading this), it was confusing and gave little to no actual information about the camps and the relation to the Sami people, and lastly it had a problematic undertone.
It feels written from an “above perspective” in terms of the parts talking about racism. Once again I feel like Sami people was written by someone else and written poorly.
Honestly it wasn’t anything I liked about it. Don’t waste your time reading this book!

I really liked this book. It was set during and post WWII in Lapland, and I had never looked into how the war affected such remote areas. A big theme in the book is also the differences and issues between Finnish people and Sámi populations.
I recommend reading the Afterword at the end before starting the book. It’s very informative and doesn’t contain spoilers.

E-bok. streamet. Biblioteket. BookBites. Norsk, bokmål. Bra bok, interessant. Troverdig. Gir ett etter min usakkyndige vurdering godt bilde av forholdene i Nord-Finland i 1944 og første etterkrigsårene. Nyanserer bildet av særlig finner og samer og det gjør under og etter krigen - lite svart-hvitt og moralisme.

Ett land av snö och aska - oj, vilken läsupplevelse! Det är en roman på strax under 300 sidor men ändå rymmer den så mycket. Less is more.
I Ett land av snö och aska av Petra Rautiainen får läsaren följa två berättelser samtidigt - en soldats dagbok under tiden han är placerad som tolk i ett nazistiskt fångläger i Enare, finska Lappland samt Inkeri Lindqvist, en journalist som åker upp till Enontekis, även detta i finska Lappland, några år efter krigsslutet för att leta efter sin make som försvunnit under kriget. Dessa berättelser vävs sakta men säkert samman genom boken men inte alls på det sätt jag trodde.
Petra Rautiainen skildrar en väldigt mörk period i finsk historia, en historia som jag tror få har koll på, i alla fall här i Sverige. Hon tar inte bara upp nazistiska fångläger och allt hemskt det innebar för fångarna där, men även förtrycket mot den samiska befolkningen. Jag har mycket dålig koll på hur det såg ut i Finland fastän jag skulle hävda att jag har ganska bra koll på hur det sett ut i Sverige och det var därför spännande att få ta del av det. De mörka ämnen som boken berör gör den tung att läsa, jag tycker att allting berörde mig väldigt starkt. Jag fick nästan lite ångest när jag läste den. Trots detta ville jag inte sluta läsa, kunde inte sluta läsa. Tänk att man kan vilja stanna i en så hemsk värld!
"Tiden är ett begrepp som på sätt och vis inte existerar här. Inte så som man har lärt känna den. Efter att tältbyggnaderna hade rasat in tvingades man i alla fall gräva fram kropparna under snön. Det är ett förargligt arbete, för man måste vara försiktig så att spadens blad träffar skallen.” s.51-52

I Ett land av snö och aska är det mycket man listar ut genom att läsa mellan raderna. Detta gäller inte minst när karaktärerna står i fokus. Man kommer dem nära men som läsare vet vi inte allt - precis som i verkligheten. Detta gjorde att i alla fall jag verkligen försökte mig tänka in i hur alla karaktärer kände och tänkte, kanske något som gjorde läsupplevelsen så stark. Karaktärerna känns alla trovärdiga, ingen är moraliskt svart eller vit och de bär alla på sina egna sår och glädjande minnen; vi som läsare får ta del av lite av varje. Just soldatens dagbok var extra spännande att följa i just detta avseende. Han jobbar i ett nazistiskt fångläger mer eller mindre frivilligt men man märker också hur detta påverkar honom negativt. Han mår inte bra och han har många bra reflektioner på livet och döden vilket gör att man som läsare sympatiserar med honom trots att man kanske inte vill.
Språket är poetiskt. Petra Rautiainen lyckas fånga intryck på ett sånt sätt att jag blir golvad emellanåt. Hon sätter ord på sånt man tänkt men aldrig hade lyckats formulera själv, allra minst i text, både känslor och situationer. Detta gör hon samtidigt som man kan läsa mellan raderna, allting är långt ifrån explicit. Det gör att man helt omsluts av romanens värld. Att dessutom som översättare lyckas fånga den känsla jag tror Rauttianen vill förmedla är otroligt! (shoutout till översättare Marjut Hökfeldt)

Det här är en bok som kommer stanna med mig länge. Jag vet med mig att jag kommer att läsa om den. Minst en gång.

Hon tar inte bara upp nazistiska fångläger och allt hemskt det innebar för fångarna där, men även förtrycket mot den samiska befolkningen. Jag har mycket dålig koll på hur det såg ut i Finland fastän jag skulle hävda att jag har ganska bra koll på hur det sett ut i Sverige och det var därför spännande att få ta del av det. De mörka ämnen som boken berör gör den tung att läsa, jag tycker att allting berörde mig väldigt starkt. Jag fick nästan lite ångest när jag läste den. Trots detta ville jag inte sluta läsa, kunde inte sluta läsa. Tänk att man kan vilja stanna i en så hemsk värld!
"Tiden är ett begrepp som på sätt och vis inte existerar här. Inte så som man har lärt känna den. Efter att tältbyggnaderna hade rasat in tvingades man i alla fall gräva fram kropparna under snön. Det är ett förargligt arbete, för man måste vara försiktig så att spadens blad träffar skallen.” s.51-52

I Ett land av snö och aska är det mycket man listar ut genom att läsa mellan raderna. Detta gäller inte minst när karaktärerna står i fokus. Man kommer dem nära men som läsare vet vi inte allt - precis som i verkligheten. Detta gjorde att i alla fall jag verkligen försökte mig tänka in i hur alla karaktärer kände och tänkte, kanske något som gjorde läsupplevelsen så stark. Karaktärerna känns alla trovärdiga, ingen är moraliskt svart eller vit och de bär alla på sina egna sår och glädjande minnen; vi som läsare får ta del av lite av varje. Just soldatens dagbok var extra spännande att följa i just detta avseende. Han jobbar i ett nazistiskt fångläger mer eller mindre frivilligt men man märker också hur detta påverkar honom negativt. Han mår inte bra och han har många bra reflektioner på livet och döden vilket gör att man som läsare sympatiserar med honom trots att man kanske inte vill.
Språket är poetiskt. Petra Rautiainen lyckas fånga intryck på ett sånt sätt att jag blir golvad emellanåt. Hon sätter ord på sånt man tänkt men aldrig hade lyckats formulera själv, allra minst i text, både känslor och situationer. Detta gör hon samtidigt som man kan läsa mellan raderna, allting är långt ifrån explicit. Det gör att man helt omsluts av romanens värld. Att dessutom som översättare lyckas fånga den känsla jag tror Rauttianen vill förmedla är otroligt! (shoutout till översättare Marjut Hökfeldt)

Det här är en bok som kommer stanna med mig länge. Jag vet med mig att jag kommer att läsa om den. Minst en gång.

Förhållandena i lägret är ohyggliga, men snart lägger soldaten märke till en fånge som står ut från mängden. 1947 anländer journalisten Inkeri Lindqvist till Lappland för att skriva om återuppbyggnaden efter kriget. Dock är hennes egentliga motiv mer personligt än så. Hon följer ett spår efter sin man, som försvann några år tidigare.

Under första delen av boken går handlingen ganska långsamt framåt vilket gjorde att jag upplevde läsningen som ganska seg. När jag läst ett tag så upplevde jag däremot att den blev mer spännande även fast jag inte helt fastnade. Jag trodde att jag skulle gilla Ett land av snö och aska mer än vad jag faktiskt gjorde, men jag kanske hade för höga förväntningar. Dock tycker jag ändå att det är en läsvärd bok. Av mig får den 3/5.
