Tiwanda Harris’s thirtieth birthday is a turning point. Gifted her late mother’s journal, Tiwanda is finally getting a glimpse of who her mother was as an adult. Though she’s doubtful about fitting romance into her life, the choices are hers. As the matches begin to surface, Tiwanda is surprised to find that maybe there is some future potential there after all. But which one could lead to real love? Only time will tell. That is, if she can find the time.

With her focus split between launching her career, helping heal old family rifts, maintaining friendships while building new ones, and also trying to open her heart to romantic love, chasing so many dreams is leaving Tiwanda breathless. But who knows? With destiny on her side, maybe there’s a chance all those dreams could come true.

Thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC!

I won’t lie, this book would take me forever to get into -- if it got to that point -- and I wasn’t going to force myself to sit and trudge through chapters until I feel motivated enough to continue. I will mention that the book has a beautiful cover and interesting plot for me to request an ARC, and there are plenty of great reviews.

“Even a shortened stick can be formed into a weapon against the things that have hurt me.”

To start with what I liked first, it is only right to start with the book cover. It drew me in immediately and looked like the kind of book I would enjoy reading or, at least, would want to know more about. I had no previous experience with this author but upon reading the summary I could instantly recognise a unique concept that would make for a very interesting story.

‘The Moment we Met’ concerns our main character, Tiwanda, as she juggles various aspects of her life that prove to be challenging in their own ways: work, family, friendship, and romance. The societal pressures Tiwanda experiences can easily be related to by the reader, especially when it comes chasing dreams and not fitting into the norm. Within this same vein, the story also greatly celebrates diversity.

Unfortunately, however, the cons outweighed the pros for me and my reading experience with this book. Right from the start, I felt like, as a reader, I wasn’t given the adequate opportunity and time to fall in love with the characters. I am not sure if they feature in any of the author’s other books, but seeing as I was reading this with a fresh set of eyes I felt that I was expected to know them already. This, topped with the fact that there is an overwhelming amount of characters mentioned throughout the story, made the narration feel very two-dimensional for me. I was getting easily confused who is who, and who had said that and why this person is saying this. I think this story would have been ten times more enjoyable if half of the characters didn’t exist and I didn’t have to keep up with remembering so many names and their roles to the main character.

Secondly, I wouldn’t go so far to say that the main character was unlikable- but, even by the end of the story, I felt like I still barely knew her. A lot of her actions took me by surprise and she was very dismissing and poorly-mannered at times (which seemed to magically turn around in the last twenty pages of the book). Her negativity- whilst I understand stems from her previous experiences in life and more often than not has a legitimate reason behind it- was still exhausting and unpleasant to read through.

‘The Moment we Met’, whilst perfectly capturing a new adult life, tried to do everything at once. I wasn’t sure from which genre lens I should view this story. The focus is on everything and nothing all at once, heavily backed up by staccato sentences of info-dumping paragraphs. I found myself often asking which information was important and which wasn’t? It was pretty difficult to differentiate.

As for the romance, I think the story would greatly benefit if it where to be better sectioned and took the time to give equal attention to all four potential love interests. Whilst I was content as a reader with whom Tiwanda chose, it was still very predictable due to the fact that her choice was allocated much more attention than any of the other love interests. The romance part of the story could have been better structured in general. The general pacing was equally as very difficult to keep up with, especially in between chapters.

Finally, I felt like for most of the book we are only told about her passion for chocolate and soap making, and only really ever see her doing either until the final half of the story. It was hard to imagine her being so passionate about kick-starting the business surrounding the two when we barely see her actively pursuing and indulging in them.

In conclusion, I think both this universe has a lot of potential and I still enjoyed my time reading it, and I will certainly still be looking out for more of Camille Baker’s future works!

I’ll start off by saying that I didn’t read the first book, Have We Met, so I read this book with a fresh pair of eyes and understanding on how the Met app works. I absolutely loved this book and will definitely be going back to read the first. The characters’ personalities and backgrounds were so well explored. Although Tiwanda had to juggle many parts of her life including her grief, family, friends, career and of course her love life, the author did that journey justice. I never felt like any one of those aspects of her life were underdeveloped. I do wish we got to see more interaction between Tiwanda and her last match. This was a great read. Thanks to NetGalley for this eARC.

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing. For allowing me to give my honest review on the moment we met.

The moment we met shares the process of Tiwanda finding love through an app her cousin used in part one. Tiwanda has never had a serious relationship and kissing in public makes he want to throw up. Tiwanda meets 4 match’s.

Throughout the book Tiwanda finds love and starts a business. Tiwanda got on my nerves as she was so stuck on not having a serious relationship but with the help of the app she finds love.

I liked The Moment We Met- I liked Tiwanda’s character and willingness to bet on herself and her business. The book takes readers on the journey of Tiwanda becoming a full-time entrepreneur and trying to date, using an app called Met. She learns a lot about herself, her parents (whom are deceased), and giving herself grace. It was a good read, easy to follow, and lighthearted.

TW ⚠️: Loss of parents and grief.

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for providing a digital copy of the book for me to read in exchange for my honest opinion.

Synopsis: Tiwanda Harris’s thirtieth birthday is a turning point, her mothers journal, grant to jump start her business, and a dating app that promises your soul mate. Though she’s doubtful about fitting romance into her life, but which one could lead to real love? With her focus split between launching her career, helping heal old family rifts, maintaining friendships while building new ones, and also trying to open her heart to romantic love, chasing so many dreams is leaving Tiwanda breathless.

My Thoughts: I did not read the first book, Have We Met, and this is my first book from this author. I am not sure by not reading the first app that I truly understood the “Met App.” It is kinda of glossed over in this book, likely presuming that I read the first book. This is a short book, which generally I like, however, I felt that there were too many characters and sometimes I had a hard time keeping them straight. I did love the premise of the book. Tiwanda’s character does get tremendous growth as she is developed throughout the book, with losing her parents, starting her own business, and fitting in romance, the character is developed well. At first, I did not like Tiwanda, but by the end of the book, she grew on me. I would like to have seen more time devoted to the romance of the matches, I do believe that would have strengthened the book. I also love the author’s writing style, the setting and the diverse characters she uses, it was beautifully written. Overall, I enjoyed the book, I just wanted more.

3.5 --> 4 ⭐

"The Moment We Met" is the follow-up to the debut "Have We Met?" (I highly recommend reading that one first -- it is necessary to understanding the characters and backstory). It is a rom-com with a hint of magic, 🪄 but it also focuses on the growth and healing of our protagonist. There are themes of grief and loss.

Tiwanda, our bi protagonist, is at a bit of a crossroads in life. She's just had her 30th birthday when she quits her job, decides to finally start her business, and decides to begin repairing family relationships. As if these huge life changes weren't enough, a mysterious 'love app' called "Met" falls into her lap Met is not your typical dating app -- it has 'magical' properties. It will match Tiwanda with a series of suitors and she has to figure out which one is meant for her.

Will Tiwanda find her match? 💕

I am so torn on this. I read "Have We Met" and really, really enjoyed it, but this one had a bit of a different vibe. I read in the Acknowledgements that Camille wrote this during the pandemic and therefore struggled with it, and I think I see some of that here in this book. That's not to say I didnt like it -- I absolutely did! I just didn't love it as much as the first. I think I was hoping for a bit more in the romance department, like in book one. This seemed to be 90% about T and all of these big life changes. I wanted more romance and a bit more spice.

What I loved most: I love all of the inclusivity and diversity here. Both books are full of characters from all sorts of backgrounds. Obviously our MCs are BIPOC, but we also have LGBTQIA, disability rep. 💕

I look forward to reading what Camille has in store for us next! ☺️ Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and the author for my gifted eARC in exchange for my honest review.

All I have to say is, I wish I knew more of tiwanda because sadly it was only until the last part of the book that we get to know her and it wasn't enough.
I spent most of the book being a little frustrated with her and it makes me sad because she grew a lot by the end, and I think part of the reason of why this happened is because I feel there was so many subplots and side characters that took time away from the main story it was hard to keep up.
The talks about grief and the representation was amazing and one of my favorite parts of the book and again I was it was explored more.
What I didn't like was the app part because I didn't really understand how it worked and it pulled me out of the story.
Overall this was a good read that could've been great.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received an advanced reader copy of The Moment We Met in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for this opportunity.

When Tiwanda quits her stressful job to instead fulfill her dream of opening her own small, black-owned business and applies for extra funds and mentoring, a dating app that is supposed to find her four soul mates doesn’t quite fit into her meticulous planning. However, she learns to embrace the chances life offers her - and maybe even she will learn to believe in love.

The premise sounded very interesting to me but - although, disclaimer, I haven’t read the first book and it might well be explained there - it bothered me that it was never explained how the Met app actually worked. Why do the matches not have to be registered on the app to be chosen? Where does the app get its information from? What criteria are the matches based on? It almost seemed a bit paranormal at points which I didn’t particularly care for. I wish there had been some kind of explanation for all that.

This book also had an insane amount of characters that all played a role for some subplots. To be honest, I couldn’t keep track of who was who for half of the time, and I think it were just way too many characters for only 250 pages. There were also so many different subplots that all seemed to be a bit rushed in one way or another. What really made it difficult for me to keep reading was how impersonal the story felt due to these points and the writing style. I just didn’t care for any of the characters all that much.

What I really did like about the book, however, was all the representation and the character development Tiwanda went through. The struggles of opening a small business were highlighted as well as her struggle to cope with the loss of her parents and the resulting clashes between the two sides of her family, the way she learned to take chances and live in the moment and open up to love.

All in all this was an interesting premise that in my opinion could have been written better and with way fewer characters. It was kind of obvious who of the matches would be endgame and the rushed end of Tiwanda‘s relationship with one of the other matches was one of the things that bothered me the most (and I also don’t see the need for the dog sickness subplot - it just took away pages that could have been used to develop the rest of the plot better). Anyway! I especially liked that there was deaf representation as that is something I don’t usually see a lot of.

3/5 stars.

Definitley not what I was expecting. I've read from Camille Baker before and she pushed some of the "message" Aka the gay agenda but the book was still a good book. But the message in this book was heavy and right out the gate. I figured I'd give her a second chance but this book was an all around disappointment. I would've never requested it if I had known its a LGBTQ category book. This book should not be listed as just a romance novel because it doesn't give the reader the choice on whether or not they want to read it.

The storyline was all over the place and seemed more like a business plan pitch more than a love story. All the love interest leads were started and ended so abruptly and it was written as though the writer had not experienced an intimate connection before. Bland. Definitely coulda stayed on wattpad

So let's talk about the things I enjoyed about this book. I enjoyed Twanda's view on relationships and her desire to not be in one. Some people aren't into all things relationships. And I can appreciate her reluctance to hold hands and PDA. Been seemed like a nice guy although a little random with their talents and interests.

I thought the mother's diary was a nice touch and I was interested in that and Tawanda's back story. I enjoyed the business owner vibe and that whole grant concept.

Things I didn't love are the millions of support characters and the complicated relationships. I got a lot of people mixed up.

It was not clear who the four matches were from the app. The whole app concept was a little unclear to me. It could be removed entirely and the story would be just fine.

I don't think this story needed to be as long as it was. I could have done with more snippets from the mom's diary and many some proper flashbacks.

All in all, there was a happy ending and that's satisfaction.

Overall an okay read. The premise is interesting: an app that gives you 4 people and one of them is supposedly your soul mate. I just wish more thought was given for the matches and certain things that were mentioned. First of all, the author focuses a lot on a journal that Tiwanda gets which is a diary that her mother kept during her second pregnancy (the one that ultimately killed her), but I felt like the diary barely played an important role for how much time was spent discussing it.

As for the matches, Benoit (the mentor) and Elliot (the vet) made the most sense and the MC seemed to have the most chemistry with them. Then the author also added two random matches that were never really explored: a female friend (whose name I do not remember) and Benoit's brother??? Supposedly, Tiwanda is bisexual but this was only mentioned ONCE when she was first matched with this female character. and then we never hear about it again. And then the Tiwanda and Benoit literally don't get together until the last 2 chapter. Literally they finally decide they want to be together in the last chapter. I don't it just felt dragged a little bit.

Overall, easy read. Premise is interesting but book fell flat.

Nope

This series just isn’t for me. I found this book to be slightly better than the previous book, but the bar was low. Like the first book, I was underwhelmed with the dating options. I was also turned off by the close proximity of her potential matches. Their interactions were overlapping in a cringy way. The biggest drawback for me was Tiwanda. She was incredibly difficult to root for or like. She complained about everything. She didn’t like anything or anybody. I couldn’t get past her abrasive personality. The ending left me feeling underwhelmed. We could’ve skipped the journey.

Work-a-holic main character who doesn't have time for love, but when the almost magical dating app "MET" appears on her phone from a friends recommendation she finds herself making time to date the four people the app suggests just incase.

The idea of the app is that when you meet someone in person who has qualities that the app thinks fits with yours you both get a notification of a potential match. The app has a limit of four chances (I think) with the idea that one of them will be 'the one' it also has a AI question feature and will disappear after your time is up or whatever. It was a cool idea but feels very "magical" and not realistic. Which honestly I didn't mind.

I liked the main character and could relate and I thought the story was fun and interesting and did like the love interests although having a couple months pass between me reading it I will say the love interests were not very memorable. So even though I enjoyed the book for what it was, its not a favorite for me.

Is Camille Baker become one of my faves? I think so. Let me get into why:
-Black people finding love, in all forms. And the author has a way of emphasising the love, the protagonist is surrounded by. It's damn heart warming
- Diversity, the is a representation of all forms of black people. Immigrants, deaf, non-binery
- Grief, it's the core stone of these novels. Seeing characters, who have been shaped and changed by grief but also how they navigate through it.
- The scenes aren't steamy but omg, it's in a cute way, very suggestive but never quite overly descriptive.

Tiwanda was my favourite from the first book. She's very realistic but we get to dee so much more of her, a go getter, a fierce character so she's definitely my girl. Ben??? I love him loads lol

Navigating Entrepreneurship and Romance

This compelling narrative revolves around Tiwanda's quest for self-discovery and the pursuit of her dreams, intertwining her entrepreneurial journey with an unexpected twist—a dating app called MET. The app's mysterious ability to suggest potential matches, even if the men aren't using MET, adds an intriguing layer to the story. Tiwanda grapples with conflicting priorities as she navigates the challenges of launching a business while simultaneously dealing with the complexities of dating, all amidst her pursuit of a grant and involvement in a mentorship program. The narrative skillfully explores how she manages this delicate balance amid the chaos of entrepreneurship and romantic endeavors.

Really refreshing to read a book where the relationship and wants out of an eventual relationship aren't black and white and traditional values.

I've actually rated it 3 ✨️ for my reading journal. The reason I've rated this one higher is because I think it probably deserves at least 3.5/4 ✨️ but I'm really not a romance reader and I got a little sick of romance half way through reading it since its my 3rd one in a row so I didn’t pay attention or enjoy it as much as I should have which isn't the books fault.

Definitely one for the romance readers out there!

I was given a free digital copy of this books by Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in what may (hopefully) become the Met series. Met is an app that helps you find your perfect match. However, not in the usual swipe left or right method. Met puts people in your path that are potential matches. So there’s a bit of the fantastical here. I find this aspect adds to the fun. This light rom com is set in Chicago and contains a diverse set of characters.

I recommend this for those who don’t need a lot of steam in their rom coms and are looking for a quick read. This took me four days to get through but only because I was traveling for work all those days. Typically this would be a 1-2 day read for me.

This was the most unromantic romance book I have ever read lol a workaholic woman with unhealed abandonment trauma goes a dating app even though she doesn’t want to date. It’s more a book about her starting a business. I love books about women who are about their business but I felt like it was undermined because she was looking at people she worked with through a romantic lens.

Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed the first book in the series, which is a shame, but is so often the case with sequels. It might be that I just need to try reading it again, but for now it fell flat and the story just didn’t flow or connect in the same way that the first one did.

Within the first few chapters of this book I was immediately interested. I always felt there was never enough coming of age books and this hits the nail on the head. You have a Black woman dealing with a job she can't stand and decides she needs to do something about it. Not only that her love for chocolate making and soap making has me swooning. I instantly loved this book.

I love how realistic this book is (aside from the met app of course). Tiwanda is a realist. Logic over feeling to make calculated decisions. Clearly that has gotten in the way of her love life, but not in a corny oblivious way like a lot of romance books. This seemed genuine, and I relate to her – the overthinking, the comfort in singleness, and the second guessing when a possibility reveals itself. I enjoyed her journey. 4 stars because this romance book was not overly romanticized and very relatable to me.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book as I had never read from this author, but I had heard so many good things I was excited to get to it. When I saw that it was on KU with narration I was even more excited. This was a quick read for me, I got through the audio in one shift at my second job, which I love. I enjoyed a lot about this book; I love the black love, the strong family/friend group and Tiwanda's character growth. I laughed out loud so many times while reading this and I really enjoyed seeing who Tiwanda would get matched with and the "dates"/ interactions with them. This book is perfect for anyone who is a fan of closed door, fairly low angst romances. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

"𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣'𝙩 𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙬𝙚 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨."

** Thank you to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and Camille Baker for giving me the opportunity to read and eARC version of this book in return for an honest review.**

Firstly, I want to mention that I haven't read the first book in series, "Have we met", prior to reading this one. I was able to start this book with "pair of fresh eyes" and I did not know how this Mat app came to be and how some relationships formed in the first book.

Secondly, I wanna say that the cover of this book is stunning and, to be honest, that is the first thing that attracted me to it. What I liked most about the book is how strong minded Tiwanda is and how she is always so well organized.

What made me not give the 5 stars is the fact that at some places in the book, but I guess that is because I haven't read the first book, I couldn't figure out what the story was about. Also there were soo many characters at some point that I had to read those parts a few times to figure out who is who. What I would have liked to have happened in this book is, I wish there was more about other things such as her falling for a guy, and anything else really and not just about her chocolates and soaps. What I am trying to say is that I needed more to the story itself.

All in all this is a very interesting story and it has a lot of potential. I will be looking forward to the new books in the future. One advice for everyone else tho, please read the first book in the series before this. I think that would have made me like this book more and probably understand some stuff in the story better.
