After being dumped by her boyfriend, Koyori went to her longtime friend Hijiri's house to drink away her sorrow...and ended up spending the night with him! Not only that, he tells her he loves her—and she's not sure how to reconcile the new development with someone she's known since they were kids. After all, the stakes are high—if things don't work out, she’ll hurt one of her closest friends. And to make matters worse, her ex wants to patch things up...? Koyori needs to figure out what she wants, before she loses it all.
After her ex dumps her for his other girlfriend, Koyori has some drunken revenge sex. Except it isn’t with a random stranger - it’s actually with Hijiri, her friend since childhood. And while she’s trying to grapple with her complicated feelings about this mess, her ex is trying to win her back in a whole other other mess…
It’s always great to have another series about mature adults, but one about messy, immature adults is arguably even more welcome. This one is kind of a romantic disaster area, especially for poor Koyori, who is grappling with a lot.
And bless this book for treating sex as a thing that happens and happens frequently, although, as we’ll see, it certainly also recognizes that not all sex can be healthy, whether it intends to or not. It also portrays all this in a mature fashion that actually means mature, not just ‘hey, here’s some nudity’. Depicting sex is easy, but passion is hard, and this one gets the tone just right.
This volume really captures the slow maturing of your early 20s, where you’re starting to get it together but aren’t quite there yet (spoiler: you might never and could end up reviewing manga in your 40s, cautionary tale).
Koyori is the best thing in this story, largely because she’s so likeable as a character. There is a very valid reading of her as somebody grappling with an anxiety disorder, which just makes her even more interesting to spend time with. As I noted above, she’s got it marginally together, up until the exact point where she does not.
She’s caught between Hijiri and a hard place (not that one, but also that one), as she clearly finds him romantically intriguing as well as sexually alluring, but grapples with the risk of losing somebody who has been there for her for literal decades. Obviously not every guy/girl pairing ends up in the throes of romantic entanglement, but some certainly do and this story delivers on the complexity of this dilemma.
Hijiri is pretty basic, a guy who has nursed a crush for the longest time that finally sees his chance. Their initial encounter is total drunken sex, but he takes that opportunity to finally come clean and, for better or worse, to convince Koyori to look at things from a different angle. He’s very understanding and a little too ‘perfect pretty boy’ for somebody who works at a game company (yes that’s stereotyping, I’m aware), but hopefully he gets more to do besides support later.
Now, you’ll note that we aren’t discussing Koyori’s ex much, largely because that illustrious sack of useless is a total ass that, mercifully, Koyori sees right through from the jump. He complicates things, yes, but it’s nice to see her not even considering his nonsense (his justifications for reconciliation are likely to set people’s blood aflame).
So, my issue with the story is kind of centred on the attitude it takes towards Koyori’s anxiety. This is a bit of a pet peeve, but a lot of Koyori’s actions indicate that she has some stuff she’s not dealing with. There is a date that turns into a big thing and leaves poor Koyori literally paralyzed with indecision in a way that is far from healthy.
Hijiri is there for her, certainly, but his solutions are a little crazy. He’s understanding and wants her to be happy, but when they have awkward sex where he tells her to face away from him because she’s incapable of looking him in the eye… yeah… that’s not solving the root of the problem.
The problem is that some people need more for their anxiety than just the right person and the severity of what Koyori is going through in that moment seems leagues more problematic than just having some sex to fix things. I imagine this won’t be as bothersome to many, but it feels dismissive.
Phew, okay, off my soapbox now. The rest of this is sweet, saucy, and funny. The real problem of whether you want to risk a solid friendship on merely the potential of an amazing relationship is both relatable and believable and the perfect crux to build this story on. If I’m honest, I expected very little from this book and it surprised the heck out of me.
Koyori is brilliantly expressive and that never goes wrong - manga that really uses its creator’s talents like this is always a big draw for me. The rest of the art is quite lovely as well and it all comes together to make what is very, very close to a complete package. Yeah, I could have done without the four thousandth aquarium date, but there’s a lot of charm to these two trying to figure out a path together.
4 stars - a pleasant surprise that isn’t quite perfect, but has a novel setting and a healthy attitude towards sex and isn’t just another high school romance. An easy addition to my massive list of ongoings.
Which side would you want to stand on when the line between pure friendship and attraction becomes all too blurry when all the walls that's been caging you up crumbled down?
What a lucky strike! I can't believe I'm reading STRAIGHT straight!! AND LIKE, THEY'RE ALL GEMS! Anyway, I miss BL!! But this one is unbelievably nice too!! Raunchy and really intimate but it's with consent and childhood friends turning into lovers trope, and art style is gorgeous. The storyline is not cringey and not too dramatic!! It's just perfect!! Have you already watched It's a Boy Girl Thing? Not the body switching part, but there definitely a scene there that reminded me when I read this series. Anyway, it's really cute! And their friendship is so adorable.
Kawaii!!! I love a childhood friend to lover romance. Definitely in my top 5 tropes and this one has such lovable characters. Koyori and Hijiri (gosh I love how upfront he is about his feelings) How refreshing is this?
It is a mature manga, but it’s so tasteful so it’s so steamy and adorable. Not feeling gratuitous and voyeuristic. I enjoyed the art around the spicy scenes. I can’t wait to see how their story plays out.
It has one of my favourite tropes a.k.a friends to lovers but also one of my least favourite things on a fmc a.k.a being overly annoying. Though, I guess, it's not bad so far. I like that the romance isn't too convoluted, at least for now.
It's cute how down bad Hijiri is for Koyori. Initially, I was put off by how immature Koyori is. Then I realized I would've handle things exactly as she has and that I have no room to talk. I appreciate the strong emphasis on communication in the story. Hijiri and Koyori are always talking things through and making sure they're on the same page. I enjoyed this volume and I'm excited to see where the story will go.
A cute emotional take on friends to lovers, our main female lead Koyori ends up sleeping with her best guy friend, Hiijiri. There’s a bit of messy emotions as they learn to navigate their new relationship.
The art style is beautiful and brings this real first love feeling to the story, I adored the characters.
this manga made me react audibly with how adorable it is!! this is such a pure and cute love story! I can't wait to read what's next for the two best friends!
Relationships in adulthood are messy - Koyori and Hijiri certainly know this as they, once childhood friends, have ended up having sex after Koyori breaks up with her useless boyfriend.
With this begins their awkward and yet heartfelt transition to an office a couple with plenty of misunderstandings, reconciliations, and sex along the way. The feelings and response feel realistic and the characters are portrayed as you’d expect them to be. There is a serious reckoning for these two as they must confront their feelings for each other and be honest about them.
The artwork is well done and the plot progresses naturally. Kujira draws scenes well and the cover artwork definitely is not the best in the volume. I really liked this mature and adult take on relationships and I will be following this series without a doubt.

y'all the spice is spicy. I'm glad I picked this one up. Someone said it was like Yamada-kun to lv 999 and... maybe there is a game dev aspect which I love but yeah they... they're more active.
Rating for the whole series - 2.25 stars Considered DNFing about halfway through the series but it's so short that I just continued on, it's not bad but just very meh for me personally.
Koyori Hoshi and Hijiri Akiyama are childhood best friends. One day, after being ditch by her long-time boyfriend who cheated on her, a drunk Koyori ends up sleeping with Hijiri. The latter turns out to be in love with her and confesses his feelings to her. But of course, it’s not easy to develop a romantic relationship with someone who has been your friend your whole life.
If you are looking for a manga with the friends to lovers trope, this one is for you. The author explores the difficulty of a romantic relationship between friends. Here, the characters have known each other since they were babies and have been constants in each other life since then. Koyori and Hijiri are facing complex struggles, being in love with someone for so long and yet not wanting to ruin their friendship. Especially if the relationship doesn’t work out, there is the risk of losing your best friend forever.
I always thought that great relationships come from even greater friendships. Koyori and Hijiri are the perfect examples. They are always there for each other when the other is feeling down. It’s been a while since I’ve read a manga with the portrayal of a great relationship. The characters are actually communicating with one another.
Regarding the character, Koyori's ex-boyfriend is so toxic, he doesn’t care that he hurt her and comes back to her when he found out that he’s been cheated on. At least, it creates a contract between him and Hijiri who is the nicest and sweetest human being ever. Not gonna lie, that’s because of characters like him that I have high expectations regarding guys.
Regarding the art, I wasn’t a big fan of it at first, but it did grow on me. I guess it’s why I haven’t picked the manga right away, despite hearing good things about it.
I feel like I have to say it every time in case people might not know, but it’s a josei, therefore its art and content are more explicit and mature. So be aware.
