If the Dead can’t get justice, they’ll settle for revenge.

Dalton Smith believes his shady past is finally behind him: recently married, a new name and career, and a decisive break from his father—Stoney Cove’s most notorious felon.

“You are a Speaker-with-the-Dead.”

A young Asukan woman, seeking justice for her brother’s unsolved murder, accosts Dalton in a local bar, shattering the web of lies he’s crafted to protect himself and the woman he loves.

Beneath the Sunken City—segregated home of Stoney Cove’s Asukan population—the unavenged Dead begin to stir. The savage evidence of their fury forces Dalton out of hiding, back into the world he swore to leave behind.

But before Dalton can challenge Stoney Cove’s demons, he’ll have to confront his own.

Deven Kane

Deven Kane plays a mean bass and loves to tell stories. He writes thrillers set in dystopian contexts, and urban fantasy, which he describes as “supernatural thrillers set on another world.”

“Speculative fiction allows me to explore human nature, interpersonal conflicts, the desire to rise above our circumstances, and the obstacles that hold us back,” he says. “No matter the setting—Earth’s near future, the past, or an alien culture on another planet—the most compelling stories are always about our interactions with each other. The good, the bad, the ugly, and our need to transcend.”

His novels include the dystopian Tracker Trilogy (Tracker, Dissident & Scorpion), and the urban fantasies Darkwood and Treehawke.

Deven and his wife live under the watchful supervision of their bemused dog.

Revenge is a dish best served……by ghosts, especially when they’ve not received the justice they deserve. Stoney Cove may be a perfect town, but tensions are brewing between them and the Sunken City, as well as between the living and the dead. Treehawke aka Dalton Smith has hidden from his past after, but when the dead stir, he will have to embrace his gift. He is, after-all, a Speaker-with-the-Dead, a very talented one. Along with his wife, Mallory, and close friends, they will find themselves in the crosshairs of something very disturbing. Deven Kane has given us a well-written, suspense-filled, paranormal thriller, with great characters, amazing descriptions, and a wonderfully creepy storyline. I am looking forward to reading the next novel in this series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Kane's story is a charming romp through the world of the dead until it's tense conclusion. Mallory and Dalton will be the "couple goals" duo of the spooky set!

The story itself is complex, with the strong female characters that readers expect from Kane. This new novel fits no formula that I know but blends crime, humour, romance, ghost story and outright horror. As is typical with Kane, he weaves in some social justice angle, this time shining a light on racism and privilege but with people groups that he has created. I guess no world, real or imagined is spared from this.

Recommend for fans of Dean Koontz' Odd Thomas series for the blend of humour and creepiness. I imagine this is hard to achieve since so few try.

The premise of this story is quite interesting. The hero is a member of a clan of individuals who can interact with the dead. He wants nothing to do with this heritage and has tried to walk away from it. Unfortunately for him, the dead are pulling him back as a monster composed of spirits who can’t rest is seeking vengeance on the world.

All of that is good. On the downside, the novel is very slow moving which and that caused some difficulties in holding my interest. Treehawke’s early determination not to have anything to do with his heritage also became a bit frustrating. I kept thinking, if he really doesn’t want anything to do with his heritage, why didn’t he move far away? But those frustrations aside, it’s worth holding on the conclusion of the story.

"You are a Speaker with the dead." Dalton and Mallory just want to have a nice, relaxing dinner. The evening starts out fine but is soon interrupted by a woman who has mistaken him for someone else. Or has she? Stoney Cove seems like a perfect town. But all is not as peaceful as it seems. Tensions are brewing between those who live on the surface and those who dwell in the Sunken City. And more importantly, between the living and the dead. The story draws you in right from the start and will keep you hooked until its very twisty conclusion. Great characters that you'll love. And some that you'll love to hate. I can't wait to see what other secrets are hidden in Stoney Cove.

I was provided a free copy of the book via Voracious Readers in exchangenfor an honest review. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book and have to admit I found it a bit slow to start but once I started to understand the world and the background premise to the story I really started to enjoy it. Well written and a great storyline. It did read a little like the first book in a series with more Speaker with the Dead adventures to come...I guess we will have to wait and see. I really loved the relationship between Dalton and Mallory and how strong and intelligent she is. I feel like if she wasn't around the outcome may have been quite different.

A free book from Voracious Readers thank you

A tale that has it all. Greed and corruption at the forefront for those controlling the town and they want it all. All the murders committed to retain power finally comes to a end with the rising of dead souls wanting justice.
A real page turner as the reader follows our hero to the end.
A wonderful and entertaining read
