Lachlan's dream is to be a rancher, far from any town. Must Rose abandon her dreams to embrace his...or will she let this gentle giant of a man leave to pursue his own dreams?
Rose is written by Rena Groot. This is part of the Prarie Roses collection. It’s a collection of books that are written by multiple authors. They are all able to be read as stand alone stories. I was not prepared for the journey this book was going to take me on.
This book is set in the late 1850’s. We see Rose wanting to get on a wagon train starting in Independence Missouri. She was not accepted at first because she was a single female. However Lachlan asks if she can be his cook and the wagon boss agrees. Rose cannot cook but was happy to be able to go. Rose is used to a life of luxury. She was adopted from the orphanage at age 14. She was given a really great education and went on to teach at a ladies school after graduation. She completely shocked her adoptive parents when she told them she was going west.
Lachlan is the sweetest. He knew he had to help Rose. He is heading west with his brother and sister in law. He wants to be a rancher once they come to Oregon. Rose wants to continue to teach. Both have different hopes and dreams. Both are deeply rooted in God and wanting to make sure that they are following Gods path for them.
The author has written a realistic view of what traveling on the Oregon Trail might have been like. The author moves the journey along quickly but comfortably. There are some really nice and happy times. Then there are some really not so happy times. I was not prepared for the emotional roller coaster I was on. The book is well written and has great character development. I’ve read a few others in this collection and I’ve really enjoyed them.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Rating: 5 Stars!! Review: Thank you to Celebrate Lit Blog Tours and Rena Groot for picking me to participate in this Book Tour this week since this was my first time doing a tour with this company.
The Characters were so intriguing and interesting to read about. Rose was definately my favorite especially since she tried to rely on God more through Prayer even tho at times she was questionable about it.
The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually in The Oregon Trail while reading especially when the scenery was described.
Overall A Fun yet enjoyable Book in this Series about Rose's in The Oregon Prairie!! Can't wait to read more by Rena in the future!!
This book has been a realistic look at what it might have been like traveling the Oregon Trail. The author does a great job of describing the treacherous journey many took as they faced sickness, weather that was dangerous at times and terrain that was hard to get through. I was in awe of how I actually felt like I was on the wagon with Rose. I could feel the chill in the air and the rough terrain as the oxen pulled the wagon.
In the late 1850s the book takes us along as Rose decides she wants to travel but the wagon master refuses to let her join. I loved how this kind, gentle man offered to help Rose out. She was not sure at first if she could trust him, but along the way we see how much Lachlan will mean to her. I loved reading her letters to her ma and how she talked about her days. It was interesting to read all the supplies needed for the trip. I can’t imagine having to pack for a length of time making sure you had enough food, parts for a wagon and other necessary items. I did find it funny that Rose was going to travel with Lachlan as his cook. She has no idea how to do any cooking.
Lachlan is someone you can trust, respect and call on if you need help. His treatment of Rose was so heartwarming and I loved how protective he was over her. As they travel they begin to get to know each other and share their faith. The book is rich in scripture and faith that keeps Lachlan and Rose grounded and pure in God’s eyes. The author does an excellent job of illustrating what a Godly man Lachlan is.
The story has some very sad moments that made me cry. Life on the Oregon Trail was difficult and not an easy journey for anyone. We witness deaths that broke my heart as illness overtook several families. Bringing a child into the world was not easy if there were any complications and reading how families faced this was emotional. I appreciate how the author gives us a look at how Rose and Lachlan stepped up to help others and welcomed many to their meals.
I loved this story that shares how God is there at all times. He knows the pain we face but He is there to comfort us. Rose and Lachlan’s story is an example of following your heart and trusting God.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Rose Murphy just knew she was supposed to leave her teaching job and head west. She believed God directed her to teach the settlers in Oregon which sorely lacked teachers. However, she had no one to travel with as she was virtually alone in this world. When the trail boss told her he wouldn’t take a single woman without help of her own, she sat down and cried.
Along came Lachlan Smith, a young man who said he'd be her sponsor if she’d be his cook.
My thoughts… Skip this if you don’t want to read the negative part of this review.
On a positive note, Lachlan was a wonderful character. He took on the role of Biblestudy and prayer service leader. The Word of God was his lifeline. He was very kind to Rose even though they had no tie to each other, or promise as they say.
This book is one in this series I wouldn’t particularly recommend.
I have always had a great love for historical fiction. It just seems to pull me and hold me close. I can’t seem to read enough historical fiction books. Even though some follow the same premise they’re not the same so I have to read more and more of them! One such time period is the time of going west. The wagon trains have always had a special spot in my reading and I’m glad to continue to read them.
This book is part of the Prairie Roses collection written by several different authors. You’re going to love all of them. And you’re in luck that they don’t have to be read in order so you can start off with whichever one you want!
Rose wants to go west. In fact, she decides she’s going to do it! Except she gets turned out of the train because she’s a single woman. That is until Lachlan hires her to be his cook. Never mind the fact she can’t cook, she accepts! I liked the fact that Rose was adopted at 14 and had a marvelous life. It seemed off that she’d leave her adoptive family to go west but it did make a wonderful story.
I enjoyed the historical aspect of the story and watching the pull and draw of Rose and Lachlan to each other while they also had to find out whether their dreams were worth more than the others or if they could give up their dreams for each other.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
I have read a few books by Rena Groot and I was interested in her reading book in the Prairie Roses Collection. Rose is Book 18 of the Prairie Roses Collection, a collection of standalone novels by Various authors.
We are taken back to the 1850s. Rose comes from the High Society and she is about to embark on the Oregon Trail to head West. She is a Strong woman but she knows she will need Strength and Courage to conquer this journey. Rose really hopes to be a teacher when she reaches the new town she is going to. The journey includes a Chaperone and Rose meets Lachlan, she is really connecting to him and liking him. He is pursuing becoming a Rancher on a big piece of land and doesn't want to live in the City. Will there be a Romance between Rose and Lachlan? Will Rose have to choose between being a Teacher in the City or following Lachlan to the Ranch?
Wow, what a wonderful sweet storyline! I LOVE how Rose felt God leading her on the journey to head West. Lachlan is such an outstanding character, caring and loving. The way he secured Rose a seat on the Wagon Train by saying she was his cook, was my favorite part of the book. I was engrossed in the book and didn't put it down until I was done reading. The book is one of Trusting God and knowing his plans are greater than our plans. I LOVED this book from beginning to end! FANTASTIC BOOK!
Tragedies and miracles, heartache and joy. Rose faces all these and more as she travels with a wagon train along the Oregon trail. Although many stories have been written about this difficult journey in the mid-1800s, this novel contains some elements I had not seen in others I have read. A privileged single woman finds a way to join the group, unaware of the dangers and trials ahead. The story is told from her point of view, including many letters written to the woman she considers “Ma.” This allows her to share adventures and incidents she hears about but doesn’t witness herself, although it does include some repetition. The author’s storytelling gift brings this book to life, taking the reader along on an eventful endeavor. It’s hard to believe one wagon train faced all the troubles this one did, but it certainly makes for an exciting account. The narrative holds the readers attention and keeps them wondering what could possibly happen next. I also appreciate the spiritual element. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely enjoyed this book, although filled with emotional ups and downs, it was a realistic view of the early days of our Country's expansion. I'm an 80s girl, so late middle school we were introduced to computers via the only game available to schools Oregon Trail which I always loved playing but found it daunting due to always dying of something, sickness mostly, and never beating the game. This story has some similarities to the game as sickness and tragedy was a real hardship on the Oregon Trail, as was many things, so people like our two main characters had to rely on their faith and put their trust of survival, healing emotional trauma and hardships, strength to keep going, showing kindness despite daunting circumstances, in God. Through good and bad,God was still there and Rose and Lachlan had to hold on to that as they strived to survive and still serve others. A beautiful faith based realistic historical fiction view that will have you engrossed into the lives of our characters until the very last word! I highly recommend this book!
Rose by Rena Groot is a work of Christian Historical Romance fiction. Rose is the 18th book in the Prairie Rose’s collection. Rose is a determined young woman who feels God called her to go west. But as an unaccompanied woman, the wagon train master refuses her passage. But Lachlan feels led by God to offer her a position as a command to provide her with safe passage.
I loved how the author developed this story as well as the characters. Filled with actual hardships and situations that could have faced those going west, I appreciated the details in this story. From losses to marriages to births, a lot of events take place.
One of my favorite parts of this story involves a dog named Sadie and a baby raccoon. But you will have to read the book to find out what happens. So if you enjoy works of Christian historical fiction, check out this book for yourself.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
The author has written a sweet and heartwarming story with wonderful characters. This is Rose and Lachlan's story, a story of a young couple who join forces to travel the Oregon Trail to Oregon. Rose's dream was to be a teacher in town, and Lachlan's was to own a ranch. When Rose was informed she could not travel with the wagon train since she was a woman alone, Lachlan came along and hired her to be his cook on the trail in exchange for his acting as her chaperone and protector. As they travel and endure the hardships of the trail which included danger, sickness, the running low on food for the people as well as the animals, accidents, and other adverse circumstances, they begin to grow closer. Will their relationship become more than an arrangement; will love enter the picture? Be sure and read this outstanding story to find out; I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Rose is Rena Groot’s contribution to the multi author series, Prairie Rose's Collection. I thought it was a great addition to the series. I enjoyed getting to know Rose and Lachlan. Their story was sweet, entertaining and a delight. I found to be a slightly predictable but still definitely still worth reading. It was an easy book to read that I had no problem to read in one sitting. It was interesting to get a glimpse of what it was like to travel on the Oregon Trail. Overall, a wonderful book to read.
Rose will be getting four and a half stars from me. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean Historical Romantic Fiction. I would be interested in reading for books written by Rena Groot in the future.
I received a digital copy of Rose from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
The author, Rena Groot, did an amazing job writing this book. The characters were well developed, as was the storyline. I loved the descriptions of all the supplies you needed to take with you on a wagon train. I also enjoyed all of Rose's letters to her Ma. Rose and Lachlan seem to be meant for each other, even though Rose wanted to live in town and be a teacher and all Lachlan wanted was a ranch out of town. Rose has more backbone than she thought, but there were several times the trip got so hard that she was ready to go home. After many hardships eventually Rose and Lachlan find their HEA. I recommend this book if you like historical western romance.
Powerful story: Rose: Prairie Rose’s Collection was to read. As Rose gets a calling to travel west to Oregon, her life is forever changed. All the people, who travel the Oregon Trail, never thought that their journey would be so hard. Rose meets Lachlan, who agrees to chaperone her West. The comforts she enjoyed are now gone and their life’s are now all they try to protect. The author has written this story of faith in God and the struggles that were encountered on the trail. Amazing that people survived.
To say I was immersed in this story throughout the entire book is an understatement. Rena Groot literally brought each character to life, making me feel as if I was there right alongside, living out each adventure, crying each tear, suffering each sickness but more importantly, being renewed by the Word of God interspersed in it’s entirety. A true testament to the faithfulness of our Father!
This book was extremely well crafted! I loved that Rena wrote most of it as letters back to the person she felt was truly her mother figure. You know travel in a wagon train is so difficult and I loved that Rena shows that aspect. All the glory and salvation from misadventures are gifts given by God! Each time Rose doesn't know how to handle things she turns to our Lord. I also loved the bible references throughout the book. I highly recommend reading this book!
This story from the series was nothing like what I had to to expect from the series! It was definitely different, as it was told in the prospective of Rose writing a letter to her Ma! It has a good storyline and characters that find that faith can move mountains. It definitely had some drama, Indian kidnapping, mystery and romance.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a sweet love story. I appreciate that the book was realistically accurate when describing the trials and hardships they endured while traveling. My tears fell at the scenes writtten about the deaths and the pets getting rabies.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
Rose leaves a life of luxury for the hardship of the trail West because of her father. Suddenly, she loses him! Will she stick to the Trail? She does with the help of a young man who leads her to see her need for God. Find out about her adventures and lifelong friends who become family as she travels to San Francisco.
I enjoyed this book! The story was engaging and the characters were inspiring! This is the first book I have read by Rena Groot - I hope she writes more historical westerns in the future! I recommend this book (and all the other books the series)!
Rose: Prairie Roses Collection Book 18 is a unique, inspiring historical romance by Rena Groot. Book 18 Rose is unique from the woman pictured on the cover, to the inflated supply list, the heart breaking stop at Fort Sacrifice, letters to Ma explaining the journey, plus the unique circle of friends on this wagon trail. I enjoyed German Oma's interaction with the folks and her advice on life: Love is a choice. Set pre Civil War 1854 the plot twists begins with "no single woman", cooking lessons, health issues (cholera, scarlet fever, child birth, heat, snake bites), many reasons wagons drop out, and the grueling monotony and hardships of heading west. An informative, inspiring page turning read of YOU Can DO iT!
